Tommie Potts: The Fireman Fiddler of the Coombe | Tallaght Library

Theater
Tommie Potts: The Fireman Fiddler of The Coombe is a musical character study on the life and work of Tommie Potts (1912-1988); Ireland’s most visionary traditional fiddler and a fire fighter with the Dublin Fire Brigade. Described by Martin Hayes as “the John Coltrane of Irish Music”, Potts’ came to cult prominence in the 1970s for his unrivalled avant-garde settings of Irish dance tunes as well as his notoriously reclusive personality, shying away from public performance and the music industry at large. Weaving a tapestry of archival footage, never-before-seen recordings of Potts, and musical performances from leading contemporary fiddlers Aoife Ní Bhriain and Liam O’Connor, the film offers a three-dimensional portrait of the enigmatic Dubliner; his music, his mercurial personality, and his many years of service as a Dublin fireman, including his involvement in one of the most traumatic events in the Brigade’s history. Dir. Macdara Yeates - 67 minutes Information Source: Tallaght Library | eventbrite

Comedy
SATURDAY 25TH JANUARY Doors 7pm / Show at 7:30pm Craic Den Comedy Club brings the best Irish and international comedians to the stage every week in Dublin city. As seen on their acclaimed TV show on Virgin Media and millions of views on social media, the Craic Den will deliver you the gift of festive laughs all evening long. Karl Spain Karl Spain has long been established as one of Ireland’s most popular comedians, from his own tours and touring with others, and has appeared at festivals all over the world. Karl has worked with some of the world’s greatest comedians ( his peers ahem, cough). Karl has spent most of 2022 touring with Kevin Bridges because Kevin finds him very funny – or because Kevin uses Karl to remind him to keep the weight off. Hopefully the former. Karl has written for lots of comedians over the last decade or so, so you have been laughing at his jokes even when you didn’t realise it. But he has kept all the best jokes for himself. “His quick wit will leave you gasping” – Evening Standard “A delight to be in the same room” – Independent “Karl is criminally underrated” – The Irish Times “The audience were in the palm of his hand” – Metro “See him now before he gets too big” – Three Weeks “Achingly funny” – The Sunday Times Colum McDonnell Colum McDonnell is a comedian and actor best known for his television appearances and writing credits on the IFTA nominated satirical RTE sketch show ‘Irish Pictorial Weekly’. He currently stars in the RTE comedy show ‘Bridget and Eamon’ as Eamon’s hapless friend ‘Fierce Handy Frank’. Colum has been described as having ‘The intelligence of Arsene Wenger, the looks of Che Guevara and the accent of Jim Corr’. ‘A born storyteller, he really lights up the stage’ The Scotsman ‘Irish Pictorial Weekly is splutter-your-tea-across-the-room hilarious’ The Irish Times Fiona Frawley A fast rising talent on the Irish comedy scene, Fiona uses quick wit, dry humour and the appropriate amount of cringe to give the people what they want - jokes that make them feel better about their own awkward existence. Fiona can regularly be found on Ireland's most iconic comedy stages including at Vicar Street where she recently supported Tommy Tiernan, Iain Stirling & Joanne McNally, and Cherry Comedy where she is a resident MC. She has performed at the country’s top festivals including Electric Picnic and the Vodafone Comedy Festival, and also beat the gong at the famous Comedy Store in London. The excitement around Frawley continues to grow! HotPress You’re so relatable! A girl in the front row of a gig one time David Tsonos If you want serious comedy, David Tsonos is not your man. With his friendly and confident persona, he intrigues everyone with his combination of banter and impulsive comments. His comedy stems from being the youngest of five boys, babysitting… his nephews and his cat. David started off in Canada and, since making the UK his home, he has performed in over 15 countries. He has appeared at numerous fringe festivals in the UK including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bath and Hastings and has performed overseas gigs in Bucharest, Budapest, Malta, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Prague, Berlin, Guernsey, Oslo, Luxembourg, Belgium and now lucky for us he's back in Ireland this week!
