After Life: A History of Death | Edinburgh

Oct 27, 2023–Jul 5, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
Death is universal. In spite of this, the way we prepare for, think about and respond to death, varies significantly. ‘After Life’ explores changing views of death from antiquity to the present day. It uses the remarkable collections of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and its library - Scotland’s oldest and largest medical library - to uncover the history of death. An original copy of Napoleon Bonaparte’s post-mortem, written on Saint Helena Island, and a diary documenting the last days of celebrated Edinburgh physician James Young Simpson are displayed alongside a broadside proclaiming the execution of famous Edinburgh murderer William Burke. The exhibition is split into three themes. It begins by examining the process of dying – deathbed experiences and how we identify death. It then moves on to uncover what happens to the human body – from cremation to dissection, cannibalism and mummification. Finally, the exhibition explores death in different cultures, including Victorian mourning rituals and Irish wakes. The exhibition also includes a photography exhibition loaned from the Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care: It Takes a Village An exhibition by Colin Gray and the Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care. There is an old African proverb - 'It takes a village to raise a child - meaning, children need the input and support of their whole community to grow into well-rounded adults. But doesn't it also 'take a village' to support someone who is dying? The Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care has worked with award-winning Glasgow based photographer, Colin Gray, to produce this powerful and challenging series of portraits and personal stories. It Takes a Village explores the idea that as people's health deteriorates, care and support comes in many guises.

Andy Warhol: The Textiles | Edinburgh

Jan 26–May 18, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
Andy Warhol’s recently discovered textiles are being shown in Scotland for the first time at the world-renowned Dovecot Studios next year. The iconic 20th century artist created and sold his textiles anonymously, leaving them in obscurity until their recent discovery by collectors and curators Richard Chamberlain and Geoff Rayner. This exciting exhibition is the first exhibition in Scotland exclusively dedicated to Warhol’s textiles, and is a rare opportunity for audiences to see the works, with many of them never exhibited in Scotland before. Andy Warhol: The Textiles will showcase more than 60 textile works, featuring fabric lengths, garments, prints, film and photography. Together these pieces demonstrate how textile and fashion design were a crucial element to Warhol’s success as one of the most iconic artists of the last century. Everyday objects were a key part of the 1950s American textile trade, with prints used for dresses, skirts and more. This was an important focus for Warhol, who had a knack for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, alongside his fascination with repetition, which became an integral part of his Pop art. Warhol’s textiles are full of playful food designs from lemons to candy apples to pretzels. One of the most inventive projects on display will be his designs for legendary New York café Serenditpity3, which Warhol was a frequent visitor to. Inspired by the ice cream desserts at the café, Warhol created an homage of playful food designs that will be displayed in the exhibition. The Dovecot café will be redesigned in honour of Warhol’s Serendipity3-inspired works, enhancing the exhibition experience. Dovecot, a world-leading fine art tapestry studio, will highlight how textiles are a particularly versatile medium for artists such as Warhol. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Warhol’s main output of work had to meet the demands and deadlines of professional clients; in contrast, working with textiles allowed Warhol to create art for art’s sake. His textiles were managed by agents working in New York’s garment district who sold them anonymously. They have been hidden from the mainstream until 2023, when Andy Warhol: The Textiles was on display at The Fashion and Textile Museum in London.

Matthew Arthur Williams: In Consideration of Our Times | Edinburgh

Mar 22–Jun 15, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
Williams is a Glasgow-based artist who has become known for a visual arts practice that explores themes of race, queerness, memory and history. A key concern that he addresses in his work is the absence of representation and how this can be perpetuated by formal histories and archives. For Williams, memory is something that has to be worked on constantly for hidden histories to be revealed, retold, celebrated and preserved. In Consideration of Our Times features a selection of entirely new colour and black & white self-portraits and landscapes which Williams describes as being, “in a state of constant loss”. The methodical, slower-paced process of analogue photography, using a darkroom to bring pictures to life from photographic negatives, is something that Williams values. All the work on display has been produced in the publicly accessible photography darkrooms at Stills and at Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow.

Arts
Discover the groundbreaking work of Sérgio Ferro, a Brazilian architect and theorist, in a thought-provoking talk titled "Sérgio Ferro, Architectural History From Below." This event delves into Ferro's remarkable contributions to the field of architecture and how they challenge conventional perspectives. As one of the most radical architects of his generation, Ferro's ideas have global significance and have reshaped the way we perceive architecture today. Born in Curitiba, Brazil in 1932, Ferro's architectural journey began at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo. There, he established Arquitetura Nova, a group known for their highly innovative and cost-effective housing designs using vault structures between 1960 and 1970. However, Ferro's political activities led to his imprisonment during Brazil's military regime. He eventually found exile in France, where he continues to live and work. Ferro's insights and reflections on architecture are compiled in his renowned publication, "Arquitetura e Trabalho Livre" (Architecture and Free Work), released in 2006. To shed light on Ferro's transformative ideas, the event will feature José Lira, a distinguished professor of architectural history at the University of Sao Paulo. Lira's extensive knowledge and experience in the field make him a fitting collaborator for the AHRC/FAPESP-funded project, "Translating Ferro," conducted in conjunction with Newcastle University. The event will be chaired by Richard Williams, a respected figure in contemporary visual cultures. It will take place at the Elliot Seminar Room, Minto House (MIN_2.403) in Edinburgh on April 1, 2024. This is a hybrid event, offering both in-person and online attendance options. Further details will be shared closer to the date, and any accessibility requirements can be addressed by emailing eca.events@ed.ac.uk. Join us for this enlightening exploration of Sérgio Ferro's architectural legacy, and gain invaluable insights into the captivating world of architectural history from below. Admission is free, making it an accessible opportunity for all architecture enthusiasts.
