Words and music with Liverpool author/musician R Peter Davies | Gallery 455 and Smithdown Social Arts Hub
May 2, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Liverpool
Join us for an evening of conversation and music with R. Peter Davies, singer-songwriter of the award-winning alt-country band The Good Intentions, and author of a new novel, “Valediction Records”. This event is part of the Smithdown Road Festival.
Liverpool-born R. Peter has also been a teacher, a Crown Prosecutor and featured as one of the subjects in the famous “Seven Up” series of ITV documentaries. He'll be in conversation about his novel with Smithdown Litfest Director Ian Skillicorn. This will be followed by an audience Q&A and then R. Peter will entertain the audience with an unplugged session of his music.
About “Valediction Records” by R. Peter Davies
For over forty years, former band members of Generation 27, a briefly successful band in the late seventies, have been haunted by the shadows of the group’s collapse. Stephen is weighed down by guilt, Philip blames everyone else for his fall from stardom, while Martin battles addiction and illness. Only when strangely familiar figures emerge from those shadows is each of them forced to confront their loss and regret. The past really is a foreign country, but how will the three friends navigate their way from there to the future?
There will be a bar, and a chance to buy signed copies of R. Peter's book and music.
Doors/bar opens: 6.30pm
In conversation with R. Peter Davies: 7.00pm
Interval: 7.30pm
Audience Q&A: 7.45pm
R. Peter Davies Unplugged: 8.10pm - 8.40pm
Bar closes: 10.00pm

‘What to do with such knowledge of faraway suffering? … it seems normal for people to [ignore] the ordeals of others. We don’t get it. We truly can’t imagine how dreadful, how terrifying, and how normal it becomes. Can’t understand, can’t imagine’. (Susan Sontag, 2002)
From Jimmy Kelly’s 1979 death in police custody to Ireland’s mother and baby institutions, Phil Scraton’s research exposes institutional abuses of power. His work challenges public inquiry failures and highlights independent panels (Hillsborough, Mother and Baby Institutions) that centre survivors’ voices. Panels, whose extensive findings inform public inquiries, enable those giving evidence to speak freely without public examination. This transformative process is essential to truth recovery, empowering the bereaved to challenge state authority and reveal the limits of official justice. Scraton’s work turns individual cases into broader issues of institutional accountability.
Phil Scraton
, Professor Emeritus at Queen’s University Belfast, is a leading researcher on state power, contested deaths, and the rights of bereaved families and survivors. He led the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s research, was principal author of its report, and worked closely with families throughout the inquests. His work spans major investigations into prison protests, mother and baby institutions, and police brutality. Widely published, his books include Hillsborough: The Truth, Power, Conflict and Criminalisation, and The Violence of Incarceration. A consultant on the BAFTA-winning documentary Hillsborough, he holds a Leverhulme Fellowship researching independent panels. He has advised on deaths in custody and institutional abuses, challenging state accountability. Awarded the Freedom of Liverpool, he refused an OBE and was a guest on Desert Island Discs.

A Climate of Lies | The Black-E
May 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Liverpool
Environmental writers and activist Mike Berners-Lee and Simon O’Brien plus guests from the Liverpool Shift Sustainability Network, invite you to join with them continue raising our voices to highlight the ongoing Climate Emergency, and share ways we can continue to force action.
There is no getting away from the reality that things are getting worse, with no reprieve in sight, now that the world’s most infamous climate denier holds the world’s most powerful seat in the White House. Big oil, and companies across the world involved in pollution and destruction have been given a licence to burn the planet.
The shocking facts remain. Every year we throw away 1.3 billon tons of food. Industry is the 3rd biggest emitter of greenhouse gas. Every single day we continue to heat up the planet, three hundred football pitch sized forests are cut down every hour. We are still dependent on fossil fuels and millions of litres of sewage are dumped into clean water rivers each year. On the school run, children in cities have to navigate cars and breathe in invisible particles that cause life limiting health conditions.
Governments do little more than offer window dressing, and pay lip service to taking action, while implementing new laws to limit protest, reserving some of the harshest sentences for protest ever handed down for people involved in environmental protests.
This insanity can only be brought to an end by communities from across the world who suffer most. Make it your priority too, and join us to make sense of this madness - let’s find a way together to extinguish the flames.
Mike Berners-Lee
is a British environmentalist and author known for his work on climate change and sustainability. He is the founder of the consultancy Small World Consulting, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of business practices. Berners-Lee is the author of How Bad Are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything, a book that explores the carbon footprint of everyday activities and products. He is a passionate advocate for carbon reduction and environmental awareness.
Simon O’Brien
is a British environmental campaigner, writer, and sustainability consultant. He is known for his advocacy work on environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and resource conservation. O'Brien has worked on various projects related to sustainable urban development and waste management, focusing on the practical steps individuals and organisations can take to reduce their environmental impact. He is also involved in raising awareness about the ecological consequences of human activities. Simon plays leading roles in both LCC and LCRCA in reviewing green spaces and currently promoting active travel in his role as Liverpool City Region Active Travel Commissioner.

The book They don't make footballers - and football autobiographies - like this anymore. The brutally honest, riotously entertaining story of the much-loved Everton legend and iconic Premier League bad boy. Praised by Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the greatest and most passionate players to ever play the game, Duncan Ferguson, or Big Dunc as he is known, is larger than life in every sense. Measuring a towering 6 feet 4 inches in height, from the moment the striker emerged in British football in the 1990s, he was front and back page news. On the pitch, fans loved Duncan for his roguish charm, his thrilling goals and his total commitment in every game. Fighting tooth and nail, he was a born leader and took no prisoners. Like his rival Roy Keane, he played close to the limit, and often crossed it. Such as the time he was sentenced to 3 months in Glasgow’s toughest prison for headbutting an opponent – the first and only time a footballer has ever gone to jail for a crime committed on a football pitch. In BIG DUNC: The Upfront Autobiography, Duncan reveals, for the first time, the full story: the truth about his experiences in prison, his partying with African princes and Liverpool gangsters, his fighting with burglars, his making and losing a fortune, and how he turned his life around through his beloved Everton F.C.. In the process, the book sheds light on one of football’s most charismatic but notorious and enigmatic hardmen. Duncan is now a coach and manager at Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C.. He is a pillar of the community in Merseyside, giving back to stricken children who share a similar tough upbringing to his own. Duncan's book takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of humour, drama and redemption. Buckle up.
