Jun 12, 2025 (UTC-4)

.

,

Mary Thompson-Jones
, Ed.D. is a Professor at the U.S. Naval War College. Before joining the USNWC, she directed a master’s program in Global Studies at Northeastern University.
Prior to entering academia, she had a highly successful diplomatic career, spanning 23 years a as U.S. Foreign Service Officer in leadership roles in the Czech Republic, Canada, Guatemala, Spain, and Washington, D.C. She retired with the rank of Minister-Counselor, having received several Superior and Meritorious Honor awards along the way.
Dr. Thompson-Jones’ new book,
America in the Arctic, Foreign Policy and Competition in the Melting North
, has been praised by Sen. Angus King, I-ME, as “a finely crafted chart that can guide us through rough seas ahead to a peaceful and prosperous future,” and by Amb. Paula Dobriansky, former Undersecretary of State for Global Affairs, as “a compelling testament to the importance of U.S. engagement and a must-read for policymakers.” She is also the author of
To the Secretary: Leaked Embassy Cables and America’s Foreign Policy Disconnect
.
As climate change accelerates, the Arctic has become a frontline of global competition. Melting ice, rising temperatures, and swelling seas have made remote regions at once newly accessible and rife with new dangers. Vladimir Putin’s Russia has embarked on a substantial military buildup in the Arctic, and China has also turned its attention northward. The United States, however, has only recently begun to reestablish its Arctic presence after many years of waning influence.
America in the Arctic
offers a timely and compelling case for why the United States must deepen its commitment to a region threatened by climate change and geopolitical rivalry. Mary Thompson-Jones surveys past and present U.S. relations with the Arctic lands: Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. She traces the history of the U.S. presence in the far north from the purchase of Alaska through the Cold War, arguing that lessons from the past should inform America’s relationships with its Arctic neighbors today. At its best, U.S. Arctic policy balanced security interests with residents’ needs and international cooperation on environmental and regional issues. In recent years, many policymakers scrambling to reassert U.S. leadership have framed their goals solely in security terms. Thompson-Jones argues that climate change now poses the greatest challenge, calling for a new approach that is inclusive of all the Arctic’s inhabitants. Bringing together national security expertise and historical insight, this book charts a course for American Arctic policy in a warming world.
WorldBoston's
Chat & Chowder
series features key authors on international affairs in an engaging setting. In addition to discussion of a featured book (usually sold at a significant discount), the program offers the opportunity for discussion among members and guests - and of course a selection of chowders and beverages.
This Chat & Chowder will be hosted in-person (from 6:00 to 7:30PM ET) and live-streamed to Zoom (from 6:15 to 7:15 PM ET only).

Yu-Wen Wu: Reigning Beauty, 2025 | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Jun 17–Oct 14, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
This summer, violets, nasturtiums, and hydrangeas escape from the Gardner’s greenhouses and rain down the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade in a site-specific installation by Artist-in-Residence Yu-Wen Wu. Inspired by Isabella's passion for plants and the loving care given to our “Living Collection” by the Museum’s horticulture team, Wu composed a collage of photographs of the Gardner’s flowers, transforming individual blossoms into a windswept shower blooming bright against dark storm clouds.
At once an homage to the fleeting beauty of the natural world and meditation on the precious vulnerability of the environment, Reigning Beauty will crown the Façade from June 17 – October 14, 2025 and is part of this summer’s inaugural Boston Public Art Triennial.

Flowers for Isabella | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Jun 26–Sep 21, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Join us this summer to dig into the roots of Isabella Stewart Gardner’s passion for plants. Both an avid gardener and a trailblazing curator, Isabella relished in her “deliriously glorious” garden at Green Hill—her estate in Brookline, Massachusetts—before she constructed her Museum. A site of respite and a testing ground for innovation, it was there that Isabella first cultivated the varieties that would fill the Museum Courtyard, honed her curatorial vision, and furthered her conviction that art and nature enliven one another. Isabella’s horticultural creativity is captured on the canvases of paintings on view throughout the Gardner Museum today.
Flowers for Isabella, on view from June 26 – September 21, 2025 in the Fenway Gallery, gathers archival materials and artworks from the Gardner collection depicting four of Isabella’s most cherished species—irises, peonies, chrysanthemums, and nasturtiums. Together they create a new portrait of the Museum’s founder just steps away from her ever-blooming Courtyard garden.
Ming Fay: Edge of the Garden | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Jun 26–Sep 21, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
What is a garden? A wild space? A curated collection of plants? Or a plot of soil in which to seed memory, connection, and creativity? This summer, the Gardner Museum’s Hostetter Gallery springs to life with the large-scale sculptures of Ming Fay (1943 – 2025), whose work reconsiders gardens as sites of creative potential that reflect the lives and desires of those who cultivate them.
At once playful and contemplative, Ming Fay: Edge of the Garden constructs a space of wonder that calls on visitors to view the world around them with new appreciation. Sculptures of fruits, seeds, shells, as well as hybrid plants borne of his boundless imagination, surprise in their unexpected pairings and sizes. Together, they conjure new meanings through familiar shapes, scents, and symbols. In his papier-mâché, bronze and ceramic gardens, Fay unites personal, collective, and cultural memories, building gardens as fantastical spaces born of curiosity, longing, and his own lived experiences as part of the Chinese diaspora in the United States.
On view from June 26 – September 21, 2025, Ming Fay: Edge of the Garden invites visitors to escape the city for a brief moment and marvel at the extraordinary, ordinary beauty of a maple tree twirler, a ripe cherry, or a crooked wishbone—and how they can unlock memory and imagination.
Where We Meet: Imagining Gardens and Futures, a partner exhibition at Pao Arts Center will explore the city of Boston’s Chinatown gardens through the art of Ming Fay, Mel Taing, and Yu-Wen Wu from July 18 – October 10, 2025.
Roslindale Film Society: The Birdcage (1996) | the Square Root
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC-4)
Boston
Join us for a movie night at The Square Root! We are presenting a Mike Nichols blockbuster comedy.
The Birdcage
is a 1986 comedy starring Robin Wiliams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, and Dianne Weist. Middle-aged gay life partners, Armand Goldman, a Jewish drag club owner, and Albert, the club’s flamboyant star attraction, live in the eclectic community of South Beach and have raised a straight son. Now, their newly engaged son, 20-year-old Val, wants to bring his fiancée, Barbara, and her ultraconservative parents home to meet his family for the first time. By Val’s request, Armand pretends to be straight, not Jewish and attempts to hide his relationship with Albert, in order to please Barbara’s father, controversial right-wing Republican Sen. Kevin Keeley. RATED R.

About Alison Hinds
Alison Hinds (born 1 June 1970) is a female soca artist from the Caribbean island of Barbados. She is one of the most popular soca singers in the world and has unofficially been given the nickname the "Queen of Soca". She has produced many popular songs that top charts even in countries which do not widely listen to soca.
In 1986, Hinds joined the soca band Square One. At first this band performed mostly in bars and clubs, but later they became a top Soca band, bringing soca to a new level. Alison produced her first hit in the year 1996, "Ragamuffin". That song made her win road march of that year for Kadooment (Barbados' Carnival). The following year she repeated road march and also won The Party Monarch with another hit "Twister". Alison was the first woman to ever win these titles in Barbados. This led to Hinds' role as the lead singer in the band. Next, Square One created an album called "Full Bloom". This album took over the Caribbean. It included the song "Faluma", which was the top song in the Caribbean for the period of 1999-2000. It toped the charts of Guatemala for 49 weeks. It was during this period that Hinds' popularity grew. Square One continued to produce hits until 2004 when it broke up - partly due to Hinds' departure.
Currently Alison Hinds lives with her family, husband Edward Walcott and daughter Saharan (born May 5th, 2004), on a horse farm in Barbados. She has her own band, "The Alison Hinds Show".
