Elevate Youth is seeking experienced bikers to volunteer and help guide our youth on a biking outing. We have a limited number of bikes available, so when signing up, please select whether you'll need a bike provided or if you can bring your own. Either way, we’re excited to have you bring your skills and enthusiasm! Volunteer Arrival: 2:00 PM (Youth will arrive between 2:15-2:30. Volunteers are asked to assist in unloading bikes from our van prior to their arrival.) Graphic Novel Reading Room is back in 2025 to provide you with an ever-expanding collection of comics and zines to read in a peaceful environment in the company of others. Whether you're a regular reader or planning to come for the first time, all are welcome to this calm and social reading space. Over 500 graphic novels and zines will be provided for you to read, mostly of the literary kind in all genres: fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, horror, sci-fi, graphic medicine, mange etc. It's a casual event: all participants can read their own choice of comics and there is no group discussion at any point. You're welcome to arrive and leave at your leisure, and welcome to read quietly or interact with the other readers. The Treehouse kitchen will be providing delicious food, drinks and cakes as usual, and the amazing ambiance that we love the Treehouse for! This presentation explores how educational justice is being reimagined through a blend of public policy, transnational scholarship, and community-led advocacy. Drawing on reforms advanced under former Colombia’s Minister of Education Aurora Vergara Figueroa it highlights a shift toward territorial equity, and inclusive quality education. The presentation examines examples of the results of global collaborations between universities in Colombia and the United States and partnerships with philanthropic institutions to demonstrate how interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration can foster transformative action. Together, these efforts illustrate how Global Studies can contribute to imagining and enacting futures rooted in equity and social justice. Aurora Vergara-Figueroa is a distinguished Afro-Colombian scholar and public intellectual whose work bridges higher education, public policy, and critical studies on race, gender, class, and land dispossession. With deep expertise in Critical Race Theory, Comparative Historical Sociology, Feminist Critique, Diaspora Studies, and Afro-Latin American Studies, she has significantly shaped academic and policy discourses both in Colombia and internationally. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University as a fellow of the Afro-Latin American Research Institute, part of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. A columnist for El País América , she also made history as Colombia’s first Afro-Colombian Minister and Deputy Minister of National Education. Her leadership and advocacy earned her recognition as one of Forbes’ most powerful women in Colombia in 2024 and as ‘Afro-Colombian of the Year’ in 2023 by the Color de Colombia Foundation and El Espectador . Vergara-Figueroa holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and previously served as director of the Center for Afrodiasporic Studies (CEAF) and professor at Icesi University (2012–2022). She is the author and editor of several influential works, including Estudios Afrocolombianos: Lecturas Esenciales , Descolonizando Mundos , Afrodescendant Resistance to Deracination in Colombia , and Demando mi Libertad, and has contributed to volumes such as the Routledge Handbook of Afro-Latin American Studies and Oxford Bibliographies in Sociology . About the Artists Jason Palmer is a renowned trumpeter, composer, and educator who has performed with legends like Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ravi Coltrane, and Roy Hargrove. A fixture in Boston's jazz scene for over 20 years, Jason was named to the inaugural Boston Artist in Residence Fellowship for Music Composition and has twice been honored as a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow. Jason has released 20 albums as a bandleader on labels like Ayva, Steeplechase, Newvelle, and Giant Step Arts, with multiple 4-star reviews from Downbeat Magazine. He has performed in over 35 countries alongside artists such as Mark Turner, Greg Osby, Grace Kelly, and Matana Roberts. For two decades, Jason led the house band at Boston’s historic Wally’s Jazz Café and has performed at major venues and festivals throughout the Northeast. As an educator, he holds teaching positions at Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, and Arizona State University, and previously taught at Harvard University and The New School. A dedicated advocate for the local jazz community, Jason served as VP of JazzBoston from 2008 to 2020. He also starred in Damien Chazelle’s 2010 film Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. In 2015 she was granted a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music and later on was accepted to the Berklee Global Jazz Institute program, where she was mentored by renowned musicians such as John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ben Street, George Garzone, and others. She holds bachelor’s degree in Performance and Professional Music from Berklee College of Music and a master’s degree from Berklee Global Jazz Institute majoring in Global Jazz Performance. Throughout her musical career, she has been given opportunities to share the stage with renowned musicians such as Chris Potter, Grace Kelly, Noah Preminger, Lakecia Benjamin, Walter Smith III, Allan Chase, Patricia Perez, Ben Street, Adam Cruz, Marco Pignataro, Ellis Hall, Catherine Russell, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Liebman and others.
