Description : One of the biggest challenges facing aquatic ecosystems today is the disruption of natural water cycles due to human activities, which has led to more water and pollutants flowing into streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. In this talk, Dr. Jayakaran will discuss how he and others are working to restore urban water systems using nature-based solutions. Recent research shows these approaches can reduce the harmful effects of stormwater on fish. Ani will focus on one such solution—permeable pavements—and explain recent breakthroughs that make them a practical way to manage stormwater in cities. Dr. Ani Jayakaran has an Extension appointment with Washington State University. He works on disseminating strategies to manage water resources using Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) and improving current engineering designs using ecological engineering principles. Managing stormwater is not just about controlling where water goes; its fate and transport are intrinsically linked to the ecosystems and communities surrounding stormwater’s path from ridge to ocean. His program aims to improve the science, education, and regulatory framework that govern GSI system design and installation in Washington State. Ultimately, he hopes to influence stormwater management decisions to positively serve traditionally under-resourced Black and Indigenous communities, people of color, lower-income groups, and the ecosystems they live within. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering, a doctoral degree in Agricultural & Biological Engineering, and is a professionally licensed civil engineer in Washington and South Carolina. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Graduate Performance Diploma in organ from the Peabody Conservatory of Music (Baltimore) as a student of Donald Sutherland and Gillian Weir, where he also completed a Master's degree in piano as a student of Ann Schein. He received a bachelor of music degree in piano from Bob Jones University as a student of Laurence Morton. He further studied with organists Susan Landale, Marie-Claire Alain, Guy Bovet, and Michael Radulescu. In 2008, he received the second prize in the Sixth International Musashino Organ Competition in Tokyo, Japan, and in 2005 he was a finalist in the St. Albans International Organ Competition.
