Camille Henrot: A Number of Things | Hauser & Wirth
Jan 30–Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Camille Henrot (b.1978, France) holds her first major solo exhibition in New York, Many Things, featuring large bronze sculptures and smaller works from her new “Abacus” series (2024). These works explore the friction between nascent imagination and social symbolic systems through children’s development tools, shoes, graphics and counting devices. In addition, new works from Henrot’s “Dos and Don’ts” series will also be on display, combining printing, painting and collage techniques to explore the relationship between social codes of conduct and civilization and obedience. The dog sculptures in the exhibition are tied to poles, symbolizing dependence, continuing Henrot’s exploration of emotional bonds. Her “Abacus” sculptures combine the form of ancient calculation tools with children’s bead mazes, suggesting the human impulse for self-optimization and the cycle of learning patterns. The “Dos and Don’ts” series reveals the constructed and performative nature of social identity through collage and disordered elements, continuing Henrot’s interest in information organization. The entire exhibition focuses on the complexity of living, learning and growing up in society, gently exploring how we find a balance between integrating into and resisting social structures in our daily lives.
