Concerts
Throwin' Bo's Presents: Sunbeam Sound Machine w/ Cones & Pateka Friday, April 4 at The Knockout Doors 8pm, Show 9pm $18 - $20 // 21+ Sunbeam Sound Machine https://open.spotify.com/artist/5rGnc6zmQSjWGJ8KEAvGFq?si=d6a305e4f28b4858 Sunbeam Sound Machine is the project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Nick Sowersby. Emerging from Melbourne, Australia in 2013 with the lo-fi double-EP One/Sunbeam Sound Machine , the project quickly found a devoted audience worldwide. 2014’s debut album Wonderer led to international touring and has established itself as a cult classic of the modern psychedelic pop era. Follow-up Goodness Gracious was nominated for the 2019 Australian Music Prize and led to further international touring, while the synth-heavy pop of 2022’s Possum saw the project reach new creative heights. The release of the Soft Signal EP in 2024 traded in the intricately layered sound of previous releases for ‘a stripped-back yet profoundly beautiful sonic experience’ (Happy Mag). Sowersby’s trademark lush production, tip-toeing the line between euphoria and heartbreak, has garnered more than 70 million streams and established a dedicated global fanbase that continues to grow with each release. Cones https://open.spotify.com/artist/7Eo5yqhHiEtDPdToS6YFnE?si=ef4adbb1410c4d77 Cones are Jonathan and Michael Rosen, two brothers from San Francisco who make far-out, addictive pop music. Jonathan, the band's singer and principal songwriter, is also a middle school art teacher and a visual artist whose trippy hand-drawn animations and drawings have been styled for artists such as Erykah Badu, Toro y Moi, Pond and Eleanor Friedberger, and is a contributing cartoonist for The New Yorker magazine. Michael is a classically trained pianist, composer and producer who carefully crafts their recordings, and additionally works as an engineer in the world of immersive audio. Together, Jonathan's intuitive, abstract approach and Michael's technical prowess combine to create what Tiny Mix Tapes describe as "crisp, tuneful, spontaneous bursts of sound and color." Stereogum applaud Cones as a "wonderfully groovy synth-pop delight," and KCRW approve of their "easy breezy SoCal feel we love so much." Jonathan and Michael themselves liken their music to "candy in a conch shell." Their music is the product of two restlessly creative minds drawing from all corners of their imagination. Pateka A four-piece experimental rock group from the San Francisco Bay Area, Pateka ’s genre-bending songwriting style draws on the close-knit bond of childhood friends Elihu Knowles (keyboards/vocals), Dylan Ransley (guitar), Quinn Girard (bass) and Ryan Higley (drums). The band, which is based in Richmond, creates a unique blend of synthesized sounds, samples, off-kilter grooves, and expansive, jazz-influenced harmonies. Pateka’s sound has been compared to a variety of artists, including Palm, Badbadnotgood, Sweet Trip, Mid Air Thief, Jon Bap, Sun Ra, Pulgas, Os Mutantes and Standing on the Corner. Over three years in the making, Pateka is preparing to release their first studio album later this year. Information Source: Throwin' Bo’s | eventbrite

"We Run the Tides" Book Discussion | Problem Library

Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
Please join us for WNP Book Club 's salon-style book discussion on April 12th from 6:00-8:00pm! We’ll gather at Problem Library ’s beautiful Inner Sunset District space to discuss We Run the Tides by Vendela Vida, WNP Book Club’s featured title for March-April 2025 that can be purchased at a 10% discount in-person at Green Apple Books on Clement Street or Books on the Park on 9th Avenue. An achingly beautiful story of female friendship, betrayal, and a mysterious teen disappearance set in the tawny Sea Cliff neighborhood, we chose We Run the Tides for its location, its multigenerational appeal, and its bitchin’ 1980s soundtrack. Together, we’ll enjoy complimentary light refreshments and chat about the San Francisco we discovered in the novel. The discussion will be led by Sean Connelly, Humanities lecturer emeritus at San Francisco State University, and WNP’s Executive Director Nicole Meldahl, supported by photographs from the OpenSFHistory archive, related activities and listening experiences, and more. Even if you didn’t read the book (although we strongly encourage that you do), we bet you’ll enjoy an evening communing with neighborhood bibliophiles. This event is free but donations are always helpful and RSVPs are appreciated so we know how many people to expect. Questions, requests, or recommendations? Email Nicole Meldahl: nicole@outsidelands.org . ----------------------------------------------------------------- WNP Book Club is the perfect excuse to read books and commune around a shared sense of place. Launched in January 2025, this club is a partnership between Western Neighborhoods Project , your friend community history nonprofit; Sean Connelly, Humanities lecturer emeritus at San Francisco State University; Problem Library , an arts and education space for people of all-ages; Bazaar Cafe and Green Apple Books . All of our featured books can be purchased at a 10% discount from Green Apple on Clement Street and Books on the Park on 9th Avenue. We read one book that has a (sometimes abstract) connection to local history every two months. And, on the second Saturday of the month, WNP hosts either a Silent Reading Party or a salon-style Book Discussion in connection with every book. And yes, there is a limited-edition bookmark for everyone who participates! Learn more about WNP Book Club on our website. Information Source: Western Neighborhoods Project | eventbrite

And it called to her. In dreams she saw the river, her ancestors, and her home. When the land calls, you listen. And KP found herself far from her ancestral lands during a time of collective trauma, when the world was wounded and in need of healing. In 2020 she made the journey from Portland back to the Skagit River, back to the cedar trees that stand tall and shrouded in fog, back to the tide flats and the mountains, back to Swinomish. It is a powerful thing to return to our ancestral lands and often times the journey is not easy. Like the salmon through the currents, like the tide as it crawls to shore this is a story of return. It is the call and response. It is the outstretched arms of the people who came before, welcoming her home. The Land, The Water, The Sky is a celebration of lineage and strength. Even in its deepest moments of loneliness and grief, of frustration over a world wrought with colonial violence and pain, the songs remind us that if we slow down, if we listen to the waves and the wind through the trees, we will remember to breathe.
