Dragon Boat for Beginners | Palmer Park
May 23, 2025 (UTC-4)
Port Perry
Dragon Boat for Beginners is a monthly drop-in session by the Scugog Dragon Boat Club.
Dragon boats can fit 10-20 paddlers, and are directed by a qualified steersperson. Paddling can be leisurely or competitive...for these sessions we'll keep it light and fun, with lots of opportunity to learn new skills.
These sessions are great for anyone who likes the water, and wants to try something new!
No experience is required, and we provide all the equipment (life jackets and paddles).
Our coaches will teach you how to safely get in the boat, the proper dragon boat technique, and boat commands.
We'll spend the first 15 minutes getting equipment and loading the boat, followed by 45 minutes on the water. There will be plenty of time to take breaks for water, to snap pics of our beautiful lake, and to learn new skills and technique.
Here at the Scugog Dragon Boat Club we love all humans, and welcome people of all skills and abilities on our boat.
Looking forward to seeing you on the water!
====================
Please note:
We paddle rain or shine! We will only cancel in the event of lightning. Weather cancellations will be sent out at least one hour prior to your scheduled session time.
We require a minimum of 10 paddlers to get out on the water. If fewer than 10 people are registered by 24 hours before the session, we will send out a cancellation notice.
In the event of a cancellation, registrations will be refunded.

Cleft Hurdle Making | Warminster
May 24, 2025 (UTC+1)
Warminster
On this one day workshop you will make your own mini traditional wooden Cleft Gate Hurdle to take home with you.
This course is a great opportunity to learn new skills in a beautiful woodland setting.
Discover how to cleave wood with a froe and shape with a drawknife. Have a go at using a Twybil, also known as a Mortising knife
Cleft gates was essential in traditional British farming and dates back centuries. Originating from the need for portable, robust fencing, these hurdles were primarily used to control livestock movements. The construction process begins by selecting young, straight ash wood, prized for its resilience and flexibility. Using a tool called a froe, the wood is split along its grain into long, thin strips. These strips, or "clefts,"they are then shaped using a draw knife, and then fixed between two vertical stakes using a mortise and tenant joint.
The tenant is shaped using a draw knife and the mortise is made using a twybil. This method of splitting rather than sawing maintains the wood's natural strength, ensuring durability. The craft of making ash cleft gate hurdles saw a decline with modern fencing materials but has experienced a revival due to a renewed interest in sustainable and traditional farming techniques.
Today, these hurdles are appreciated for their historical significance and aesthetic beauty.
