Midsummer Grass Identification | Old Sarum Castle
Jun 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Salisbury
A one-day course giving participants
confidence in identifying key grasses of neutral and unimproved calcareous grassland using both vegetative and flowering features
an overview of using grass indicator species for habitat assessment
a chance to learn memorable features allowing easy grass identification
Nearly every species of grass, rush and sedge has at least one key feature which can be used to pinpoint them to genus and species level. This course aims to teach people to spot and memorise these characters for the majority of common species and some of the more specialised species found on unimproved grasslands.
This course will focus on how to identify grasses in midsummer, when most are in flower; but the ID skills taught will still focus on vegatative characteristics that can be used throughout the year.
The course will cover roughly 25 species of grass, including most of the commonly encountered species, as well as those associated with species-rich grassland.
About the tutor
Dominic Price is a highly regarded botanical tutor and has been running courses for all levels of ecologists since 2007. Adverse weather
This is an outdoor run course on an exposed site, and as such we request that participants bring suitable clothing including sunhats, sunblock, and full waterproofs & fleeces. As the climate breaks down, we do occasionally have severe weather where either it is very difficult to take notes due to prolonged heavy rain, or temperatures have reached a point where long exposure can be detrimental to health.
In these instances, we will run a condensed version of the course, where we aim to see all the species before lunch but have less time to take notes on them. We will then give attendees free access to the corresponding online course for 24 hours, which means you can take notes and look at the species in more detail in the comfort of your home. We have built a corresponding online catalogue of courses for this purpose, and we therefore feel we can offer the same training experience while looking after attendees' welfare in the field.
Therefore if you look at the forecast before the course and start panicking - don’t worry, we’ve got you!
Course certificate
This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and sitting the online course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time.
Feedback from previous courses
‘I really enjoyed the course and found it much more useful than courses I have attended recently’
‘Just wanted to say thank you for such an enjoyable and interesting day. Dominic is always such an excellent and relaxed tutor, who can even make learning grasses so enjoyable.’
‘Dominic is a brilliant teacher, it's the quirks one remembers well, not keys.’
'Relaxed atmosphere, so it didn't feel as though you were under pressure to get things right '

Start your ouseburn festival weekend as you mean to go on. Many of you already know BCUC, if not, simply we think they're one of the best bands in the world!
---
Afro psychedelia indigenous funk, punk rock energy, gospel trance healing music to fill your soul and shake your bones – and then some!
“guaranteed to touch untapped corners of your soul”
–
Okayafrica
“without a doubt the best live act I saw”
-
Gilles Peterson
---
BCUC, also known as Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees their music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation. They mash up ancient & modern waves of sound, pitching rolling bass and frenetic rhythm against hypnotic chanting and Zulu vocals.
A stone’s throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organised the escape of the most wanted anti-Apartheid activists of Soweto, BCUC rehearses in a shipping container-turned-community restaurant, where their indomitable outspokenness echoes in a whole new way. Like its elders, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees its music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation.
The seven-piece band has been mesmerising audiences both locally and globally with its indigenous funk and high-energy performances that have fast made it one of South Africa’s most successful musical exports. Artistic heirs to Philip “Malombo” Tabane and Batsumi, they give contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous peoples. In addition jazz sounds of 1970s and ‘80s productions replaced by hip-hop influences and punk-rock energy, taking the listener on an intriguing epic journey, sharing their controversial yet interesting views on modern Africa. They tackle the harsh realities of the voiceless, especially the plight of the uneducated workers at the bottom of the social food chain. BCUC taps into the elusiveness of the spirit world of ancestors by which they are inspired. The Africa portrayed by BCUC is not poor, but rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs.
“We bring fun and emo-indigenous Afro psychedelic fire from the hood,”
- BCUC vocalist Kgomotso Mokone

BRING YOUR BABY PUB QUIZ @ The Beech House, ST ALBANS, HERTFORDSHIRE (AL1) | The Beech House
Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+1)
St Albans
NOW TWICE A MONTH! On the 1st Friday of the month and the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Both 12pm-2.30pm. Change of venue to The Beech House as of April 2025.
From the award-winning creator of ‘Bring Your Baby Guided London Walks’, ‘Bring Your Baby Pub Quizzes’ are fun, brain-stimulating daytime parent socials, which take place all over London, the South East, the South West and The Midlands.
Team size is 6 maximum to make it fair on everyone.
Quizzes take a slower pace than traditional ones. We are parents ourselves, and understand juggling a ‘baby brain’ with baby distractions!
Toddlers and older children are welcome, but are the parent or carer's responsibility. Please bring suitable toys and games to entertain them while you quiz!
We take two breaks to feed, change and chat, and questions are always repeated. Settle in with the picture round from 12pm, with a further five quiz rounds (including general knowledge, music, connection and themed) starting at 12.30pm until 2.30pm. Don’t panic if you’re a bit late - we repeat questions.
A lunch menu including vegan and gluten-free options is available.
Baby change is available, including our legendary mobile baby change which means you don't need to leave the quiz to change baby!
A number of high chairs are also available.
Prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places include items such as Prosecco, luxury chocolates and beauty boxes.
Complimentary sweet treats for each table (sealed in packaging).
Important notes:
- Children are the responsibility of the parent or guardian, and must be monitored by them at all times.
- We understand that the parent or guardian will want to keep sleeping babies close to their table in baby carriers (including, for example: prams, buggies or car seats). However if babies are awake we reserve the right to ask the parent or guardian to move their baby carrier into a designated area of the venue to meet health and safety requirements (such as clear access to fire exits and clear walkways).
- Refunds or requests to move to a future event or date must be requested within 24 hours of the event commencing so that we can try to refill the space in adequate time.
- On occasion we take photos or short video clips at our 'Bring Your Baby Pub Quizzes' or 'Bring Your Baby Guided London Walks'. By attending you are giving your permission for these to be used for Bring Your Baby Ltd promotional purposes. Any individual who we have taken a photograph of and published can request that any photographs are removed and deleted at any time. Even if they have given consent when booking according to our terms and conditions, they can of course withdraw their consent and can contact us at Lucy@bringyourbaby.org

About your Teacher
Helen first began working with Reiki in 1999, when she was attuned by a Reiki Master to Level 1. She went on to receive further Master trainings in February 2023, and completed her Reiki Teacher Training in September 2023 with the Reiki Science Academy.
