EXPRESSIONS w/ JENNIFER CARDINI, Blibli, Kira Sunday, Raki, & Shane.MOV | OTHERWORLD Byron Bay
Dec 28–Dec 29, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Byron Bay
EXPRESSIONS is an event created by artists for those who celebrate the arts and music industries. Our idea is to create spaces of inclusion and free expression for all walks of life. This is an event to come as you are, eliminate the ego, be present, love, and connect with those around you. We do not draw lines between status, title, race, or gender. We are all able to create things that are pure, honest, beautiful, and emotive. Everyone on this world holds the same limitless aspiration to transform their ideas into reality, allowing us to share these visions and sounds of international artists. December 28, 2024, we are bringing a top heavy hitting European artist to the Byron Shire, JENNIFER CARDINI. For the last 30 years, French-born Berlin-based Jen Cardini has been welcoming people into the discotheque. Their belief that something more was hidden under the surface of electronic music has put them at the helm of tiny sweaty lesbian bars, flamboyant Ibiza superclubs, and precarious off-the-beaten-path warehouse raves. The sometimes-gothic always-seductive wave-laced house music they canonized in their mixes, record labels (Correspondant, DISCHI), remixes, and productions helped rephrase the world's understanding of the French dance music scene. The transformative power of music has been a constant inspiration for Cardini and feeds their creative curiosity. Just as soon as the mainstream thinks they know how to define them, they’re onto something else. It is an essential piece of their status as an underrecognized pioneer. Their party series Nightclubbing is - “a love declaration to club culture and its diversity, everything that made me fall in love with electronic music, and also gave me a sense of community and belonging.” The disco may be getting bigger, but Cardini continues to welcome the outsiders in with their selections and curation. Although the mainstream may never catch up to their icon status, the underground has already crowned Cardini, ensuring that if they do, they sure will have a lot of music to sift through. “I DO BELIEVE THIS MUSIC HOLDS SOMETHING DEEPER THAN JUST DANCING. THIS IS WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT WHEN I WAS 17 AND REALIZED I WAS GAY. I FELT LIKE AN OUTSIDER IN MY STUFFY HOMETOWN, BUT SUDDENLY THE DISCO WELCOMED ME INTO A COMMUNITY.” - JENNIFER CARDINI SUPPORTS (A-Z) BLIBLI (LUNAR DISCO/FR) KIRA SUNDAY (AU) b2b SHANE.MOV (USA) RAKI (ESP) TIME: 8PM - 2AM WHERE: UNDERWORLD, BYRON BAY Come as you are. Leave the ego at the door. Thanks for dancing with us.

Shopbot CNC Router Class: The Whole Works | MakeIt Labs
Apr 13, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Nashua
NOTE: Students are required to go to the MakeIt Labs wiki and print out the ShopBot Order of Operation and ShopBot Certification and bring them to class. (https://sites.google.com/a/makeitlabs.com/wiki/resource-areas/shopbot?authuser=0)
NEW: The update to Vectric VCarve 12 will be included in this class. v.11 and v.11.5 users are welcome to audit the class for a refresher.
The Shopbot CNC router is a fantastic machine that can carve and cut with extreme precision using its computer-controlled robotic router carriage. It can cut out furniture parts, carve designs, and much more.
The Shopbot needs a particular form of input to instruct the router head where to go and what tools and materials are being used. The software that MakeIt Labs uses is called VCarve. it tells the Shopbot exactly what to do to make each project.
Programming VCarve is not that difficult, but users must know about tools, feed rates, clearance, toolpaths, and more. Students in this class will have three hours of classroom instruction with plenty of time to follow along on their own laptops.
The instruction will include a PowerPoint presentation integrated with a live demonstration of VCarve and the use of the VCarve online manual. Students will be shown everything they need to begin working on VCarve designs from
A
lphabet to
Z
-Axis.
The second part after the break for lunch (bring your own) will be a lab session where students will complete four simple assignments to show that they have mastered the basics of the VCarve design software. Instructor assistance will be available, and students will be allowed to correct any mistakes in their work before moving on to the next assignment.
It is anticipated that the lab portion will last about three hours, but students who have mastered the software and principles of VCarve may finish earlier.
Students who complete this class may participate in the third session, where the hands-on portion of the class will be taught. It will be held immediately after the VCarve lab session.
Students are encouraged to bring a laptop (Windows only, sorry to say) to follow along with the instructor and complete the assignments. There may be a loaner available to those who are laptop-less, but this is not guaranteed. Anyone who needs a laptop should contact the instructor in advance.
Those who are familiar with either VCarve or the operation of the ShopBot may contact the instructor to test out either or both.

Kind words from previous workshop attendees
"I loved the positivity and community of all the people involved. I feel so much more confident and ready to tackle some projects myself. Thank you, thank you!"
"I thought this was an excellent workshop! I really appreciated it. The instructions and explanations were clear, helpful, encouraging and the instructor had a great sense of humor.
There was an expressed understanding of why and how women are inherently disadvantaged by assumptions that we aren't interested and/or capable of using tools and building things and the ways in which we have been traditionally excluded. The workshop inspired me to be braver in trying things on my own and if anything I think it could be a multiple weekend workshop. Two days wasn't enough! Thank you!!"
