Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite: "The Summer I Ate the Rich" | Enoch Pratt Free Library - Hamilton Branch
Apr 23, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
A smart, biting young adult novel about what happens when a Haitian American girl uses her previously hidden zombie abilities to exact revenge on the wealthy elites who’ve caused her family pain. Brielle Petitfour loves to cook. But with a chronically sick mother and bills to pay, becoming a chef isn’t exactly a realistic career path. When Brielle’s mom suddenly loses her job, Brielle steps in and uses her culinary skills to earn some extra money. The rich families who love her cooking praise her use of unique flavors and textures, which keep everyone guessing what’s in Brielle’s dishes. The secret ingredient? Human flesh. Written by the storytelling duo Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite, The Summer I Ate the Rich is a modern-day fable inspired by Haitian zombie lore that scrutinizes the socioeconomic and racial inequity that is the foundation of our society. Just like Brielle’s clients, it will have you asking: What’s for dinner? About the Authors: Maika Mouliteis a Miami native and the daughter of Haitian immigrants. Her acclaimed young adult novels frequently explore themes of identity, family, and vengeance. Her work has been featured on the TODAY Show and Essence Magazine. Maika is also a doctoral student at Howard University, exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence, culture, and media. She’s the eldest of four sisters and, when she's not writing, loves listening to audiobooks, dancing and singing at the top of her lungs, and journaling (which actually means... more writing). Maritza Moulite graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s in women’s studies and the University of Southern California with a master’s in journalism. Her work often examines the lives of marginalized people and revenge, and has been featured on NPR and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Maritza’s favorite roles have been Head Start literacy tutor and pre-k teacher assistant. She is now a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania exploring ways to improve literacy through children’s media. About the Program: Doors will open to registered attendees at 3 pm.All registered in person attendees will receive a free copy of the book while supplies last.ADA-accessible parking spot, free street parking, bike parking, and electric car charging station are available.

World Premier of the Baltimore Legacy Project: Baltimore Still Rising | The Senator Theatre
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
The World Premier (filmscreening) of the first installment of the Baltimore Legacy Project titled Baltimore Still Rising will air for the first time ever at the Senator Theater in Baltimore, Maryland on April 24th 2025 at 7PM.Following the film screening will be a panel discussion. The Baltimore Legacy Project is a series of interviews that culminates into a documentary series (docuseries) and is based in the belief that the stories, experiences and reflections of the elders of Baltimore are crucial in preserving Baltimore’s legacy. Baltimore Still Rising is the powerful first installment of The Baltimore Legacy Project, a documentary series. Baltimore Still Rising gives voice to the people who lived through one of the most pivotal moments in the city's history. In this debut episode, we hear from 20 Baltimore residents who share their personal stories and first-hand accounts of the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death in 2015, following his tragic encounter with the Baltimore City Police. Through intimate interviews, the documentary captures the raw emotions, frustrations, and resilience that defined the city’s response to the injustice and unrest that followed. Baltimore Still Rising is not just a recount of events—it is a testament to the ongoing fight for justice, the spirit of community, and the hope that, despite the challenges, Baltimore is a city still striving to heal, rebuild, and rise above. This world premiere of Baltimore Still Rising combines a powerful documentary screening with a panel discussion featuring activists who were directly involved during the 2015 Uprising. This event offers a rare opportunity to connect the themes of resistance, activism, and policy change—core ideas in historical scholarship—to the lived experiences of a modern movement. It’s a chance for them to see history in motion, bridging the lessons of the past with the challenges of today. This documentary is is not merely a recounting of events; it is a contemporary lens on the continuous struggle for justice, community rebuilding, and systemic change. It reminds us of the cyclical nature of history and the enduring need to learn from the past to build a better future. If you wish to support the development of this effort please consider donating >> https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-preserving-the-legacy-of-black-baltimore

Author Visit - Randee Dawn "The Only Song Worth Singing" | Snug Books
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
Join us for a sit down conversation and book signing with Tune in Tomorrow author Randee Dawn as she discusses her new book, The Only Song Worth Singing. She will be joined by moderator Sarah Pinsker, local author of a number of books including Haunt Sweet Home and A Song for a New Day. Dawn’s experience as a music writer comes through in her vibrant, authentic portrayal of the band’s sound and interpersonal dynamic. This fresh spin on favorite urban fantasy tropes will delight fans of Charles de Lint. —Publishers Weekly Childhood friends Patrick, Ciaran, and Malachi would've been happy to play music for coins on the streets of Dublin, but when their sound – a blend of traditional tunes and rock styling – lands them a record deal, they also get their first tour of America. As they gather fans, however, they also get the attention of three sídhe, fairies straight out of Irish tradition who play by their own rules. Mal finds himself beleaguered by a prankster whose malicious tricks make him think he's losing his mind, while Ciaran falls hard for a hanger-on whose primal sexuality saps the life from him. Patrick can save them – if he's willing to trust the superstitions he learned during a painful childhood he thought he'd left behind long ago. But the only thing that matters more than music to Patrick? His friends. The Only Song Worth Singing is an upmarket mythic novel about blood, craic, and rock and roll. Set in the 90s at the height of the Celtic rock boom, it should appeal to fans of Alex Bledsoe and Alice Hoffman alike. Randee Dawnis a Brooklyn-based author and journalist who writes speculative fiction at night and entertainment and lifestyle stories during the day for publications like the New York Times, NBCNews.com, Variety, The Los Angeles Times, and Emmy Magazine. Her debut novel, Tune in Tomorrow, was published by Solaris. Publishers Weekly said of Tune in Tomorrow: Dawn balances over-the-top drama and comedy with genuine intrigue to create a fun story with plenty of heart. Lightspeed praised it as an excellent read if you're looking for something to make you smile... well worth your time.

T HE VENUE
Wet City Brewing - https://wetcitybrewing.com/
Brewery x Restaurant x Full Bar
Why do we call ourselves Wet City? When the rest of the nation went dry during Prohibition, Maryland was the only state that refused to pass an enforcement act to support the federal restrictions. Instead, Maryland was determined to keep on drinking despite pressure from the feds and other states. Thanks to stubborn, free-thinking Maryland rule-breakers, the Chesapeake Bay became the prime port of call for the nation’s bootleggers, making Maryland the wettest state in the union.
Our fair city of Baltimore served as the nation’s center of resistance to prohibition and you better believe that sales and consumption of alcohol kept on keeping on right up until the rest of the nation caught up with us and repealed Prohibition. We love calling Baltimore our home and think this wet city’s history is worth bragging about.
