Classical
Founded in 2011, Ventanas interweaves flamenco, Sephardic and Balkan music and dance, and their own original compositions. They have released three albums (2013, 2015, 2019) and have toured extensively throughout North America, including a sold-out show at the Skirball Centre in Los Angeles in 2019. They have been nominated for four Canadian Folk Music Awards, including Best Traditional Singer and Best Ensemble. The six-piece Toronto-based world music ensemble is fronted by the powerhouse vocalist and dancer Tamar Ilana, and features the city’s finest world musicians. They perform in over 20 languages such as Ladino, Spanish, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Hebrew, French, Romani and Arabic, drawing inspiration from today’s worldwide themes of migration and the questioning of one’s identity. Tamar’s childhood was spent gathering songs from small villages on the edge of the Mediterranean and dancing flamenco, and Ventanas’ band members are from across the globe. Together, and in true Canadian fashion, they intertwine their musical cultures to create an all-encompassing world of their own in which they lead audiences down the less travelled paths of the Mediterranean, mixing in contemporary interpretations of ancient ballads, original compositions and new choreographies, inviting audiences of all backgrounds into their lives and music. Throughout the pandemic, Ventanas served as the house band for the new performing arts organisation, FabCollab and the Women in Song series, collaborating with primarily BIPOC world class women artists such as Tara Moneka (Iraq), Eliana Cuevas (Venezuela), OKAN (Cuba), Aline Morales (Brazil), Maryem Tollar (Egypt), Kaeja d’Dance (Canada), Dimitra Kahrimanidis (Greece), Nastasia Y (Ukraine) and others, in iconic Toronto venues such as Koerner Hall, the Aga Khan Museum and Lula Lounge. This series was also livestreamed by the National Arts Centre garnering over 100,000 online views. Information Source: CBRM Recreation | eventbrite

Peter Kingston | State Library of New South Wales

Jun 8, 2024–May 18, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED
Sydney
Exhibitions
Over 70 works including prints, artist’s books, sketchbooks and printing plates from across Peter Kingston’s career are on display, in a moving tribute to the late artist. Peter Kingston (1943–2022) lived and worked at the edge of Sydney Harbour. After a childhood spent at Parsley Bay, he settled in Lavender Bay among a community of artists and friends. From there, he observed harbour ferries, Luna Park and the Sydney Opera House in all seasons and weather. These were the subjects of his work, often incorporating his boat, the MV Anytime, and his dogs. Kingston’s output ranged across drawing, printing, painting and filmmaking. A passion for Sydney, for environmental conservation and the preservation of built heritage never left him. Joyful, charming, and with a wry humour, his work celebrates the everyday aspects of our city. Yet there is a bittersweet element to his work. Peter Kingston often talked about ‘time as an artist’, his way of recognising the beauty and value that accumulates with age. His work captures things at risk in a world that is always upgrading, and expresses a nostalgic yearning for those places and characters now lost.

Fine Art
Christine Webb is interested in the play of colour, light passages, perspective, and internal and external spaces. Her vibrant paintings are expertly composed and direct the viewer’s eye to multiple points of interest within the canvas. I am delighted to present my 12th Solo Exhibition with Art2 Muse. I read my paintings like a diary of memories, current thoughts and wanderings. In the current climate an overwhelming desire for peace, a welcome retreat into my studio haven to create and insulate from external chaos. I collate a collection of photos as a record or note of the fleeting thought. I have immersed myself in the balanced Japanese compositional techniques of Notan, the serenity of woodblock printing and the influence these techniques have had on Australian artists Margaret Preston and Cressida Campbell. A. Celebratory trip to Seoul to seek the highly coloured and stimulating contemporary art, enabled me to pull all these disparate influences into my paintings and make them my own, a mix of abstraction and reality. Sketching with Shapes with Liz Steel:1-day workshop on Cockatoo IslandWhen starting urban sketching many people just pick up their pen and begin to draw everything in front of them. They keep drawing and drawing (possibly getting lost in the details) and then decide it’s time to add paint. Can you relate to this? Thinking about shapes is an important way to simplify complex scenes and it will help prevent creating overworked and over-detailed sketches. Plus, it’s also a lot of fun! In this full-day workshop, we’ll explore how shapes can be used to capture the varied scenes of Cockatoo Island. ProgrammeWe’ll spend the morning doing a number of shape exercises - simplifying a scene into similar coloured shapes, starting with negative shapes and looking for shadow shapes. We also explore how thinking about shapes helps us determine the important edges in our subject and do some swatches to explore ways of combining media. In the afternoon session, I’ll do a full demo, and then we’ll spend the rest of the time doing a single sketch that incorporates some of the concepts from the morning session. Time Out by Dan Kezelman The Australian landscape offers more than just a view—it provides a profound escape, a sanctuary where time seems to slow, and the noise of the outside world fades into the natural rhythm of the land. In Time Out, Dan Kezelman invites us to step away from the fast-paced demands of modern life and immerse ourselves in the quiet, timeless beauty of Australia’s diverse terrain. Through this collection, Kezelman delves deeply into the textures, light, and colours that define the vastness of the Australian environment. From the rugged beauty of the outback, with its vast open spaces and dramatic landscapes, to the serene, sun-kissed coastlines where the sea meets the sky, each piece captures a unique aspect of the land’s ability to inspire both awe and intimacy. The work is a celebration of the connection between land and soul, an exploration of how nature, in all its forms, offers a space for reflection and rejuvenation. Each artwork is not just a representation of the Australian landscape but a meditation on the land’s ability to ground us. These small moments, often fleeting in real life, are frozen in time through his work, offering viewers a chance to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the earth beneath their feet. Time Out it’s an invitation to reclaim the time and space to slow down and truly appreciate the natural world around us. In a world that constantly urges us to move faster, to do more, Kezelman’s work offers a necessary breath—a space to unwind, reconnect, and find a sense of peace. This collection speaks to the restorative power of nature, encouraging viewers to take a step back from the hustle of daily life and find a moment of stillness. Whether through the rugged lines of the outback or the gentle waves of the coastline, Time Out invites us to pause, reflect, and rediscover a sense of balance in the natural world.
