Marina Zurkow: Parting Worlds | Whitney Museum of American Art
Apr 9, 2025–Jan 11, 2026 (UTC-5)
New York
Marina Zurkow: Parting Worlds brings together a selection of software-based works by Marina Zurkow (b. 1962; New York), an artist who explores the intersection of nature and culture through various mediums, including code, animation, and participatory experiences like dinners and card games. In the works on view in the gallery and on the adjacent terrace, Zurkow uses software that drives the interplay of the elements seen on screen and their ever-changing compositions to reflect on the complexity of ecological and social systems. The animations Mesocosm (Wink, TX) (2012) and The Earth Eaters (2025) imagine the environmental damage that results from the repeated extraction of raw materials. The work that constitutes the Hyundai Terrace Commission—The River is a Circle (2025)—is site-specific and engages with the ecologies of the Hudson River and the neighborhood surrounding the Whitney. “Parting Worlds” in the title alludes to the landscapes above and below the water, the earth breaking apart in a sinkhole, and islands emerging and separating as they are continually tapped for natural resources. It is also a phrase that evokes impermanence and loss as environments change and disappear due to human intervention and natural evolution.

Collection View: Louise Nevelson | Whitney Museum of American Art
Apr 9–Aug 10, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
"I see New York City as a great big sculpture," Louise Nevelson once remarked. Born in Pereiaslav, Ukraine, Nevelson (1899–1988) lived and worked in Manhattan from the 1920s through the 1980s. Known for her bold monochrome assemblages of stacked and composed found objects, Nevelson was captivated by the city's ever-changing skyline and saw creative potential in discarded materials that she scavenged throughout its streets at night. By painting these sculptures a single color (black), she cloaked the specific, identifying details of disparate objects such as duck decoys, lettuce crates, and pieces of rebar, transforming them into abstract shapes. Collection View: Louise Nevelson reimagines the relationship between Nevelson's work and New York, highlighting the dynamic interplay she sought to suggest in her work between motion and stillness, light and shadow, dawn and dusk.

Woven HistoriesTextiles and Modern Abstraction | The Museum of Modern Art
Apr 20–Sep 13, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Textiles touch every aspect of our lives and connect us to history. “Threads were among the earliest transmitters of meaning,” the artist Anni Albers wrote in 1965. Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction reveals the links between this art form and abstraction. Incorporating basketry, apparel, and more than a century of other textile works that challenge accepted divisions between fine art and craft, this exhibition broadens the story of abstraction, suggesting that not only ideas but materials—like woven, knotted, and braided fabric—are crucial to its understanding and success.
Spanning early-20th-century works by Sonia Delaunay, Hannah Hoch, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, whose textile practices parallel their painting and drawing, mid-century works by Albers and Ed Rossbach, and contemporary works by Rosemarie Trockel, Andrea Zittel, and Igshaan Adams, this exhibition brings together more than 150 diverse, interdisciplinary objects. Highlighting issues of labor and identity that are intertwined with modern textile production, Woven Histories argues that weaving and textiles are the quintessential link between lived experience and art.

From the Bronx to the Battery: The Subway Sun | Poster House
Apr 24–Nov 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) opened New York City’s original underground subway line in October 1904. While the city was one of the most diverse in the country, before the introduction of the subway, most New Yorkers were not in regular contact with people outside their own neighborhoods. Initially extending from the Bronx to Lower Manhattan (with service to Brooklyn beginning in 1908) and forming part of the wider transit system, the convenient and affordable IRT encouraged riders to travel beyond their communities for both work and leisure.
In order to entice people to regularly use the subway, the IRT printed two in-car poster campaigns, The Elevated Express and The Subway Sun, that highlighted each borough’s unique attractions. Of these, The Subway Sun was especially successful.
A Dialogue Between Ernest Briggs And Peter Bonner | Anita Shapolsky Gallery
Apr 24–Aug 16, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Anita Shapolsky Gallery, renowned for its dedication to Abstract Expressionism, presents “A Dialogue Between Ernest Briggs and Peter Bonner.” This exhibition brings together two generations of abstraction, juxtaposing the bold, gestural work of Ernest Briggs with the introspective, process-driven paintings of Peter Bonner. A key figure in the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, Briggs embodied the movement’s raw energy and spontaneity, using vigorous brushwork to express emotion and the rugged intensity of human nature. In contrast, Bonner explores perception, identity, and memory through layered compositions that invite contemplation beyond the surface.

Arresting Beauty: Julia Margaret Cameron | The Morgan Library & Museum
May 30–Sep 14, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Arresting Beauty: Julia Margaret Cameron explores the path-breaking career of photography’s first widely recognized artist. Cameron (1815–1879) was born in Calcutta to a French mother and an English father; in 1848, with her husband and children, she moved to England, where her sisters introduced her to the elite cultural circles in which they traveled. Residing on the Isle of Wight, where she was close neighbors with the poet Alfred Tennyson, Cameron acquired her first camera at age 48. In only eleven years she would create thousands of exposures and leave an enduring image of the Victorian era as an age of intellectual and spiritual ambition.
Her own prodigious drive helped Cameron become a probing portraitist of leading figures such as Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, G.F. Watts, and Charles Darwin, while her absorption with fine art, notably Renaissance painting, led her to create staged tableaux in a mode that has been perpetually rediscovered by photographers down to the present. Most distinct of all was Cameron’s wholly personal handling of her medium. Heedless of a large camera’s technical limitations, alert to the happy effects of accident, and indifferent to critical scorn, she embraced a style of spontaneous intimacy that distanced her from the photographic establishment of her time and class. Motion blur, highly selective focus, and even fingerprints on the glass negatives (which required developing before their emulsions dried) are among the idiosyncrasies of her singular oeuvre.
Cameron was quick to exploit publishing and promotional opportunities: at London’s South Kensington Museum (today the Victoria & Albert Museum) she secured not only an exhibition in 1865 but, a few years later, studio space, and she was the first photographic artist to be collected by the institution. Arresting Beauty features prints from its initial purchase and from subsequent additions to its holdings, which have grown to number nearly one thousand. The exhibition includes Cameron’s large if optically primitive lens (all that survives of her apparatus), pages from her memoir manuscript Annals of My Glass House, and portraits she made in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) after Cameron and her husband moved there in 1875.

Bringing together figurative sculptures made in both wood and bronze, Genesis reimagines scenes and characters from the suburban landscape of Cape Town that Schreuders calls home. Using the raw material of her own life as the foundation to create portraits that are equally archetypal and idiosyncratic, Schreuders explores how specific forms can convey universal truths and how personal history remains fundamentally connected to social reality.

Jun 12–Aug 9, 2025 (UTC-5)

Nara Roesler New York presents On Blindness, a group exhibition curated by Mateus Nunes, that explores the phenomenon of blindness as a poetic catalyst. The exhibition’s concept arises from the intersection between literature and the biography of Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986), the Argentine writer who lived the last three decades of his life in blindness. Featuring a wide range of artists from different generations and backgrounds working across various media—including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and video—the works explore the possibilities of artistic and poetic experience beyond vision: through obscure, excessive, metaphysical, tactile, and minimal sight.

Jun 18–Sep 8, 2025 (UTC-5)

New Yorkers will finally be getting back the gorgeous Frick Collection at its original historic buildings at 1 East 70th Street this year. The buildings have been closed to the public for renovations since 2020, and it’s been a long five years not being able to walk those glamorous Gilded Age halls. Some of the museum’s collection was relocated to the Met Breuer Building on Madison Avenue for a couple of years, but that iteration closed in March 2024. In April, we’ll be invited back to its restored spaces on the first floor and a new roster of galleries on the mansion’s second floor, open to the public for the very first time. Even better, to celebrate the reopening, the Frick will throw a weeklong music festival and present an installation of paintings by Vermeer that will inaugurate its new special exhibition galleries.

Studio Residency Jonathan Berger | The Museum of Modern Art
Aug 2–Aug 24, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
How might we create a home where we are? Over the course of his three-week residency, Jonathan Berger and a community of craftspeople with whom he often works will construct a handmade scale model attempting to accurately document Kaunas, Lithuania in 1940, just before the city came under Nazi occupation. The artist will juxtapose this project with archival materials from the writer and activist Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz, who is known for her notion of “diasporism”—a non-nationalist form of Jewish identity. Selections from Kaye/Kantrowitz’s archive will be presented in collaboration with her estate and her close friend and frequent editor, journalist Esther Kaplan.
The completed model is based on the research of amateur cartographer Marija Oniščik and will form the first chapter in a project that weaves together political and personal history. Berger’s residency is informed by the story of his mother, who as a young Jewish child was hidden by a Christian family in Kaunas during World War II, and Berger’s own involvement as a teenage member of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, where Kaye/Kantrowitz served as the first Executive Director. Working collectively, Berger creates an occasion to consider antiracist and stateless forms of belonging across different times and places.

MOCA CINEMA - Dancing Home 跳進部落的孩子 | Museum of Chinese in America
Aug 6, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Dancing Home is a heartfelt documentary tracing the artistic journey of world-renowned Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava, a member of one of Taiwan’s Indigenous tribes, whose work is deeply rooted in nature and indigenous heritage. Presented by the Museum of Chinese in America, the film follows Bulareyaung’s return to his hometown in Taitung, Taiwan, where he found renewal at a time of personal and professional uncertainty. A graduate of Taipei National University of the Arts and former dancer with the legendary Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Bulareyaung later received an Asian Cultural Council fellowship to study in New York in 1998. He went on to choreograph for internationally acclaimed companies, including the Martha Graham Dance Company. In 2015, supported by the Luo Manfei Dance Grant, he founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company—offering a space for indigenous youth, many without formal training, to explore contemporary dance. Dancing Home captures their shared journey of self-discovery, as these young performers reconnect with their roots and, in doing so, help Bulareyaung reconnect with his own. The screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Bulareyaung, focusing on his artistic experiences in New York and his lifelong commitment to uplifting Indigenous communities through dance. *This 90-minute documentary is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles. This program is supported by Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York. ABOUT Bulareyaung PagarlavaBorn in the Jialan Village in Taitung, Taiwan, Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava’s name means “happy warrior.” He dreamed of becoming a dancer at the age of 12, choreographed his first piece while studying at Taipei National University of the Arts, and later joined Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, performing solo works on tours around the world. In 1998, he received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to study in New York. His choreography has been featured by esteemed companies such as the Martha Graham Dance Company in the U.S., Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, and Cloud Gate 2 in Taiwan. He has also been invited to perform at prestigious international venues, including the Vancouver Winter Olympics Arts Festival, the Vail International Dance Festival in the U.S., and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. His works have been praised internationally for their “wild originality, humor, sensuality, and surprise—making modern dance irresistible.” In 2010, while taking a curtain call hand-in-hand with the Martha Graham dancers at Lincoln Center, Bulareyaung thought to himself, “How wonderful it would be to be holding hands with my own people.” That wish became a mission. In 2015, he returned to his hometown in Taitung and founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company (B.D.C.). Drawing from the rich cultural heritage of indigenous communities and rooted in a landscape between mountains and sea, B.D.C. empowers local youth who love to dance. Through the exploration of voice and movement, the company develops a unique vocabulary of indigenous contemporary dance.
