The fascinating history of the Players’ is told from its formation to its demise and is brought to life using archive film clips and photos. By Keith Fawkes and Richard Norman The story of London’s world-famous Players’ Theatre, formed almost a century ago and famed for recreating Victorian music hall, initially created in Covent Garden and later moved to Villiers Street, Charing Cross. During its heyday, it became a British institution! The fascinating history of the Players’ is told from its formation to its demise in 2002 and is brought to life using archive film clips and photos. Presenter Keith Fawkes, the theatre’s secretary for many years, tells us about some of the on-and-off-stage experiences that audiences came to enjoy. For many, it was a ‘must’ on their tourist itinerary. The successful careers of some well-known artistes who became household names were launched at the Players' Theatre and who also provided some of the support ‘turns’ for BBC TV’s long-running series The Good Old Days hosted by chairman Leonard Sachs, a Players’ co-founder. When the Players had to close, Keith saved their extensive archive for prosperity, and the collection has been transferred to Westminster City Archives – fittingly the area in which the Players’ Theatre thrived. Music hall was the most popular form of entertainment during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Centuries after their deaths, a mother and her two daughters reunite for the first time to come to terms with their wounds, their writing, and their reverberations through history.‍ Returning for a special limited run of three performances at the Newington Green Meeting House, Mary's Daughters tells the story of Mary Wollstonecraft, 18th Century intellectual radical and mother of Western feminism, along with her two daughters: the forgotten-by- history, illegitimate love-child Fanny Imlay; and the infinitely more famous Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. This feminist ghost story plunges the audience into a fluid, poetic, whirlwind tour through the lives, legacies, and times of these three incredible women. Shaped and misshapen by each other, they swap stories and memories, each intercutting and challenging the narrative offered by another. We hear the tireless writings of a genius out of her time, two sisters trying to reconcile the emotional wounds only families can create, and the birth of an iconic monster on the shores of lake Geneva. This play, written by Kaya Bucholc and Will Wallace, is a rallying cry for a world that centres radical kindness above all things. Tai Chi is a gentle, low-impact exercise that blends martial arts with meditation. Originating from ancient China, it has evolved to focus on health and rehabilitation. Often called meditation in motion, Tai Chi involves gentle movements, postures, controlled breathing and a calm state of mind. Research suggests Tai Chi may help with menopausal symptoms such as bone loss, mood swings and sleep issues. Additional benefits include stimulating the central nervous system, lowering blood pressure, reducing stress and gently toning muscles. With an active interest in promoting the works by women composers, the pianist will perform: Agnieszka Lasko's Nocturne “Autumn” (from 22 Nocturnes for Chopin by women composers), Nadia Boulanger's Trois Petites Pièces Pour Piano (1914); Lili Boulanger's Trois Morceaux Pour Piano alongside Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op.28 (Pastoral); Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis's (1875-1911), Prelude “Autumn” (“Ruduo”), VL.264; Igor Stravinsky's, Sonata (1924) and Sergei Rachmaninoff's, Elegie Op.3 No.1. (Date: 28 September 2024) Short bio: A distinguished graduate of the M.K.Čiurlionis School of Arts (Lithuania), the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Drama (Master's), Jelena also graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Music (PGDip), where she studied piano with Colin Stone. Active participant in a masterclass with French pianist Pierre Laurent-Aimard and performer at György Kurtag’ s Music Festival, where she was also coached by the composer himself, Jelena is particularly noted for promoting new music. Pas de Deux Master Class Come join us for an exciting in-person event at Fieldworks Dance, London, UK, Studio 2 . (274 Richmond Road, London, E8 3QW) at 1-2:30 pm ( Saturday 28th September ) This Ballet Master class is perfect for dancers looking to enhance their pas de deux skills , or trying for the first time. We will learn basic technique and a section from the Don Quixote , act 3 pas de deux ( Kitri and Basilio) Instructors have performed this role and will share the skills of how to dance with a partner and refine your technique in a supportive environment. A great opportunity to elevate your dance abilities and connect with fellow dancers. Hope to see you there! We wont have a warm up barre this time , please be warm in the beginning of the class. She graduated in 2014 and performed with the Company in Coppelia and Nutcraker productions. She was awarded First Place and Best dancer in National competitions. She has competed in and placed in numerous International Competitions including American Dance Competition 2015, USA (Top 15 with Variation and Highest Score with Pas Deux); 7th Helsinki International Ballet Competition 2012,Finland; Youth America Grand Prix NYC Finals 2013, USA; Silver Medal at the International Dance Seminar In Brasilia, 2011,Brazil. In 2015 she got a soloist contract to dance with Ballets de France in Toulouse, France. She moved to Canada in 2016 to be a Soloist Dancer with Canada´s Ballet Jörgen. In Toronto she also had the pleasure to work with Evelyn Hart in her own group and with teachers and choreographers of National Ballet of Canada. Giovanna secured a scholarship to complete her American Ballet Theatre National Teaching Curriculum provided by YUMIKO dancewear and has since been teaching in Canada, Brazil and England, and leading international masterclasses for students across the world, from France to India. Giovanna is now based in London where she is a freelance dancer and teacher where she teaches at Danceworks , London Ballet Classes and Cit Lit . She holds a degree for Cultural Production and is also a founder of Dance Connections Agency where she help dancers to achieve their dreams in the dance industry. She is guest artist doing the role of Clara since 2018 with Symphony of Halifax in Canada . Alysson Rocha Alysson Rocha, born in Rio de Janeiro, began his ballet training at age 6 at Petite Danse School of Dance, with a scholarship from the ONG “Dançar a Vida” Social Project. He was a finalist at the Youth America Grand Prix in 2005, which earned him a scholarship to study at the San Francisco Ballet School. At just 16, he joined the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. In 2013, Alysson joined Ballett Dortmund in Germany, where he developed new roles and performed works by leading choreographers. By 2018, he was appointed Ballet Master and First Ballet Master in 2021. He is also a member of the International Dance Council of UNESCO. Alysson has taught at prestigious institutions like the Royal Ballet of London and the European School of Ballet and has served as a judge for the Youth America Grand Prix competitions.
