When Dylan Mulvaney came out as a woman online, she was a viral sensation almost overnight, emerging as a trailblazing voice on social media. Dylan’s personal coming-out story blossomed into a platform for advocacy and empowerment for trans people all over the world.
Through her “Days of Girlhood” series, she connected with followers by exploring what it means to be a girl, from experimenting with makeup to story times to spilling the tea about laser hair removal, while never shying away from discussing the transphobia she faced online. Nevertheless, she was determined to be a beacon of positivity.
But shortly after she celebrated day 365 of being a girl, it all came screeching to a halt when an innocuous post sparked a media firestorm and right-wing backlash she couldn’t have expected. Despite the vitriolic press and relentless paparazzi, Dylan was determined to remain loud and proud.
In Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer, Dylan pulls back the curtain of her “It Girl” lifestyle with a witty and intimate reflection of her life pre- and post-transition. She covers everything from her first big break in theater to the first time her dad recognized her as a girl to how she handled scandals, cancellations, and . . . tucking. It’s both laugh-out-loud funny and powerfully honest—and is a love letter to everyone who stands up for queer joy. ABOUTDylan Mulvaney: Dylan Mulvaney (she/they) is a trans actress, comic, and creator of the viral TikTok series Days of Girlhood, which received over 1 billion views across all platforms. For her Day 365 live show, Mulvaney partnered with the Trevor Project to raise nearly $200,000 for LGBTQ+ youth crisis support. She was crowned 30 under 30 by Forbes, Woman of the Year by Attitude magazine, Out 100, THEM Now Award, a Webby Special Achievement Award, among others. Mulvaney was invited by President Joe Biden to speak at the White House about trans rights. Pre-pandemic, Dylan attended the Cinncinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and played Elder White in the Book of Mormon Broadway musical. She now lives in LA, where she works to bring trans stories to the mainstream.

SANDRA V. FEDER at Books Inc. Laurel Village | Books Inc
Mar 16, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Join local author Sandra V. Feder at Books Inc. Laurel Village for a reading and celebration of her newest picture book in the Emotions and Me series: Shy Me! A shy young child talks about situations when shyness takes over and what helps them engage more fully. In this compassionate exploration of shyness, a child describes feeling shy in a variety of home, social and school situations. These include meeting a new person, being in a crowded place and being on stage for a class performance. Sometimes the child feels shy with friends or when trying to make a new friend. When feeling shy, the child tries to be brave and identify what might help in each situation. Sometimes it helps to go slowly, find a quiet place or practice for a performance. And sometimes what helps is finding a buddy or noticing that other children feel shy too. Sandra V. Feder’s nuanced text and Ashley Barron’s cut-paper collage illustrations together create an endearing character who finds a way to cope with shy feelings. Joining Angry Me and Peaceful Me in the Emotions and Me series, Shy Me is sure to strike a chord with anyone who has ever felt or still feels shy. SANDRA V. FEDER is the author of four highly acclaimed picture books: Angry Me and Peaceful Me, illustrated by Rahele Jomepour Bell; Bitter and Sweet, illustrated by Kyrsten Brooker, a PJ Library selection; and The Moon Inside, illustrated by Aimée Sicuro, which has been translated into multiple languages. She has also written the Daisy series of early chapter books, illustrated by Susan Mitchell. Sandra lives in California.

Alissa Wilkinson: Joan Didion and the American Dream Machine | The Commonwealth Club
Mar 18, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Joan Didion opened The White Album (1979) with what would become an iconic line: “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” Today this phrase is deployed inspirationally, printed on T-shirts and posters, and used as a battle cry for artists and writers. But Didion had something much less rosy in mind: our tendency to manufacture delusions to ward away our anxieties whenever society seems to be spinning off its axis. And nowhere was this collective hallucination more effectively crafted than in Hollywood. Alissa Wilkinson examines Joan Didion’s influence through the lens of American myth-making. As a young girl, Didion was infatuated with John Wayne and his on-screen bravado, and was fascinated by her California pioneer ancestry and the infamous Donner Party. The mythos that preoccupied her early years continued to influence her work as a magazine writer and film critic in New York, offering glimmers of the many stories Didion told herself that would eventually unravel. Wilkinson traces Didion’s journey from New York to her arrival in Hollywood as a screenwriter at the twilight of the old studio system. Didion became embroiled in the glitz and glamor of the Los Angeles elite, where she acutely observed―and denounced―how the nation’s fears and dreams were sensationalized on screen. Meanwhile, she paid the bills writing movie scripts like A Star Is Born, while her books propelled her to personal fame. Join us in-person to hear Wilkinson dissect the cinematic motifs and machinations that informed Didion’s writing, detail Hollywood’s addictive grasp on the American imagination, and delve into Didion’s legacy, whose impact will be felt for generations. SPEAKERS Alissa Wilkinson, Film Critic, The New York Times; Author, We Tell Ourselves Stories: Joan Didion and the American Dream Machine In Conversation with Kevin Smokler, Writer; Documentary Filmmaker George Hammond, Author, Conversations With Socrates 5 p.m. doors open & check-in
