Henri Rousseau: A Painter’s Secrets | Barnes Foundation
Oct 19, 2025–Feb 22, 2026 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
In fall 2025, the Barnes—home to the world’s largest collection of works by the self-taught artist Henri Rousseau—will present Henri Rousseau: A Painter's Secrets in the Roberts Gallery. This landmark exhibition brings together important paintings from collections around the world, showing how Rousseau painted with viewers in mind, changing his works and his story to suit their preferences.
Building on a comprehensive research study of the 18 works by Rousseau at the Barnes, the exhibition was developed in partnership with the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, which houses the collection of the art dealer Paul Guillaume. Guillaume sold many Rousseau paintings to Dr. Albert Barnes but kept others for himself—this exhibition reunites these works for the first time in more than a hundred years.

Mythical Creatures: China and the World | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Dec 21, 2023–Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
This exhibition will explore the theme of diversity by comparing mythical creatures from different cultures. While these fantastical animals may look different, they serve a similar purpose – to help humans make sense of the world.
On view in Gallery 339 will be classic Chinese legendary mythical creatures—the dragon, phoenix and qilin—juxtaposed with collection highlights from Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, as well as Persia and Western Europe, to show the diversity of mythical creatures throughout the world, as well as their similarities and differences. Elaborately embroidered costumes and silver headdresses created by Miao, Yi and other minority peoples decorated with dragons, phoenixes, and creatures relating to origin myths will be on display in Gallery 326. In a third space (Gallery 321) Chinese contemporary works of mythical creatures by artists Xu Bing and Ai Weiwei show how the past continues to inform art today.
Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Feb 8–Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
This exhibition, the largest of Christina Ramberg’s work to date, will illuminate the artist’s encyclopedia of imagery exploring experiences of gender, sexuality, and normative ideals of female beauty.
Born in 1946, Ramberg has tended to be associated with the Chicago Imagists, a loose fellowship of artists in the mid-1960s who made vibrant work inspired by popular culture, from comic books to low-budget films and store-front displays. However, her exquisitely detailed, kinky aesthetic has always set her apart. Ramberg consistently worked in pursuit of a “coherent visual statement”, honing in on feminized aspects of the body and its erotic trappings: hairstyles, hands, corsets, shoes.
Andrew Wyeth: Human Nature | Chadds Ford Township
Mar 1–Jun 15, 2025 (UTC-5)
Chadds Ford Township
One of the artist Andrew Wyeth’s enduring legacies is his highly original response to the subject of the human body. Alongside his iconic landscapes and visionary responses to buildings, botany, and beyond, his figure paintings and drawings offer particular insight into how this unique creative journey took shape, and how he was connected to the history of art.
Staged: Studio Photographs from the Collection | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Mar 1–Jun 29, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Photography is often thought of as a means to capture the fleeting occurrences and unpredictable juxtapositions of the visual world. But what happens when photographers choose to work within a single enclosed space, exercising near-complete control over everything that happens in front of their lens? Although this premise may sound limiting, artists have long used the blank slate of the studio to create an endless variety of moving, dynamic, and daring images.
Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations | Barnes Foundation
Mar 9–May 25, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Organized by the Barnes and the Dallas Museum of Art, Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations surveys the pioneering career of Cecily Brown (British, b. 1969), one of the most celebrated artists working in painting today. Presented in the Roberts Gallery, the exhibition features more than 30 paintings and related drawings that showcase Brown’s subversion of gendered tropes in art history and popular culture.
Boom: Art and Design in the 1940s | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Apr 12–Sep 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
The 1940s witnessed major shifts in politics, science, economics, industry, the arts, and culture, which coincided with a time of scarcity, limitation, and the catastrophic global conflict of World War II.
Throughout this tumultuous period, artists brought new ideas to their work across media, from fashion and textiles, craft and design, to printmaking, drawing, photography, painting, and sculpture. Boom: Art and Design in the 1940s will be a testament to the creative spirit that flourished despite the restrictions and adversity of the era.
This exhibition will showcase art from across the decade, featuring works drawn entirely from the museum’s permanent collections.

Chris Cain Band | The Sound Room
May 22, 2025 (UTC-7)
Oakland
If you are a blues fan, it doesn't get any better than this!!!
Take some influence from B.B. King, Albert King, Ray Charles, and a pinch of Albert Collins. Add in dazzling blues and jazz guitar chops, a rich soulful baritone vocal delivering original, often wry and beleaguered lyrics with sophisticated chord changes and instrumentation, and skills on various horns and keyboards, all delivered with an uptown cool that never lacks searing passion. It all adds up to the one and only Chris Cain, who has gone from being a newcomer phenomenon bursting onto the blues scene in 1987 with a classic debut release, to being a legend, inspiration and long-established member of the blues pantheon.
His jazz-informed blues guitar playing is fiery, emotional and always unpredictable. His vocals—gruff, lived-in and powerful—add fuel to the fire. His indelible original songs keep one foot in the blues tradition and both eyes on the future. The pure joy Cain brings to his playing and singing is palpable, and draws fans even closer in.
"
Hands down my favorite blues player on the scene today. He’s an absolute blinder of a guitarist, with the voice of B.B. King and the chops of Albert King
." –Joe Bonamassa
"
Chris Cain? Now that boy can PLAY the guitar!
" –B.B. King
"
Chris Cain is a hot-shot guitarist and a singer with the maturity of blues masters like Bobby Bland and B.B. King
." –The Washington Post

Hannah Zeavin: Mother Media in Conversation at Womb House Books | Womb House Books
May 23, 2025 (UTC-7)
Oakland
An essential history for understanding how we mother now, and how motherhood itself became a medium—winner of the Brooke Hindle Award from the Society for the History of Technology.
From the nursery to the prison, from the clinic to the commune,
Mother Media
tells the story of how our contemporary understanding of what a mother is came to be and how understandings of “bad” mothering formed our contemporary panics about “bad” media. In this book, leading historian of psychology Hannah Zeavin examines twentieth century pediatric, psychological, educational, industrial, and economic norms around mediated mothering and technologized parenting. The book charts the crisis of the family across the twentieth century and the many ingenious attempts to remediate nursemaid and mother via speculative technologies and screen media.
Growing out of her previous award-winning book
The Distance Cure
, which considered technologized care, the book lays bare the contradictions of techno-parenting and how it relates to conceptions of “maternal fitness,” medical redlining, and surveillance of children, parents, and other caregivers. The author offers narratives of parenting in its extremity (for example, Shaken Baby Syndrome) and its ostensible banality (for example, the Nanny Cam) and how the two are often intertwined. Ultimately, Zeavin grapples with a simple contradiction: technology is seen and judged as harmful in domestic and educational spaces, even as it is a saving grace in the unending labor of raising a family.

Hannah Zeavin
