"Firemanship: The Basics of Winning” | 10078 Reading Rd
May 21, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Reading
Firemanship is not just about knowing how, it’s about knowing why and when. It’s about treating our job as a craft. It’s about taking pride in “doing it right.” In some cases, the fire service has become over-reliant on technology and working “smarter not harder.” While there is nothing wrong with technology or working smarter, firefighting is still a hard, dirty, demanding job that requires hard work and mastery of the basics. Shortcuts have proven deadly to firefighters and the people we are sworn to serve. Firemanship is about mastery of the basics and doing the “little things” right. It’s about never passing a kink, properly using and understanding the tools of our trade, doing efficient and effective searches, weapon selection, getting water on the fire, forcing doors, deploying ground ladders, and coordinated ventilation. On the surface, every firefighter will say “we can do that.” The question is, “are we doing it right?” Are we doing the “little things” that lead to winning or are we just getting by. The vast majority of firefighters want to do a great job, but unfortunately some haven’t had the opportunity to learn what that entails. In this presentation we will discuss the mindset, mechanics, knowledge, and preparation required to achieve mastery of the basics, firemanship, and ultimately winning on the fireground. When his brilliant memory earns him a spot as an apprentice at a printing press, the world opens up far beyond the slums and across the seas. In 2014 in Turkey, Narin, a Yazidi girl living by the River Tigris, waits to be baptized. The ceremony is cruelly interrupted, and soon she and her grandmother must journey across war-torn lands in the hope of reaching the sacred valley of their people. In 2018 in London, broken-hearted Zaleekhah, a hydrologist, moves to a houseboat on the Thames to escape the wreckage of her marriage – until an unexpected connection to her homeland changes everything. A dazzling feat of storytelling from one of the greatest writers of our time, one that spans centuries and continents, this is the story of one lost poem, two great rivers and three remarkable lives – all connected by a single drop of water. Hairy Who & The Chicago Imagists
Directed by Leslie Buchbinder, 2014
105 minutes, English. Screenings:
Saturday, 14 June 2025 at 4 PM
Saturday, 25 October 2025 at 4 PM
544 VT ROUTE 106, READING, VT 05062 Presented in conjunction with our exhibition, Gladys Nilsson. In the mid 1960s, Chicago was an incubator for an iconoclastic group of young artists collectively known as the Imagists. A cousin to the contemporaneous phenomenon of Pop Art, Chicago Imagism took its own weird, wondrous, in-your-face approach. The Imagist artists - including Roger Brown, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Christina Ramberg, Karl Wirsum, and more - each had their own unmistakable styles: scatological, meticulous, comical, and absurd. Hairy Who & The Chicago Imagists is the first film to tell the Imagists’ whole story, from their notoriety in the 1960s, to a precipitous fade from prominence in the 1980s and '90s, and ending with their 21st century resurgence in popularity. Almost 50 years after their first show, the Imagists have influenced generations of artists across the world, from Jeff Koons to Chris Ware and beyond. The Imagists' roller-coaster ride through art history is re-created with a wealth of archival footage and photographs, and over forty interviews with the Imagists themselves, critics, curators, collectors, and contemporary artists. WATCH a trailer about the movie to learn more. Free with the price of admission.
Each ticket grants admission to our galleries from 2pm for self-guided visitation of our exhibitions, and to the film screening starting at 4pm. Galleries close at 4pm. Space is limited, advance reservations are recommended. Questions? Email vermont@hallartfoundation.org Thank you for your reservation. We look forward to welcoming you! Jun 17, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Reading
Reading Lessons: An Interview with Carol Atherton Indie Book Award Shortlisted, Carol Atherton, will be at The Reading Room to talk about what books can teach us, what reading does for us and why all this matters. In a career spanning almost three decades, English teacher Carol Atherton has taught generations of students texts that will be familiar to many of us from our own schooldays. But while the staples of exam syllabuses and reading lists remain largely unchanged, their significance – and their relevance – evolves with each class, as it encounters them for the first time. Each chapter ofReading Lessons invites us to take a fresh look at these novels, plays and poems, revealing how they have shaped our beliefs, our values, and how we interact as a society. As she recalls her own development as a teacher, Atherton emphasizes the vital, undervalued role a teacher plays, illustrates how essential reading is for developing our empathy and makes a passionate case for the enduring power of literature. Carol Atherton has taught English since 1996 and is currently Head of English at a secondary school in Spalding. Originally from Merseyside, she read English at Oxford before doing a PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University and a PhD at the University of Nottingham. Supporting Act | Hackney Central Library
Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Reading
Join Swedish author Agnes Lidbeck and translator Nichola Smalley in conversation with Helen Charman about Lidbeck's new novel Supporting Act, a compelling exploration of the complexities of motherhood, identity, and patriarchal expectations. The social contract is non-negotiable. The woman must be a mother. The woman must be desirable. The woman must be a caregiver. When Anna gives birth, she surrenders completely to motherhood, reshaping her body, identity and purpose, shielding herself from the burden of her own desires. But as her marriage crumbles and her children grow independent, she needs a new role. An affair with an ageing writer, Ivan, offers her a new narrative, a way to rewrite herself. But no role lasts forever, and sooner or later Anna must confront the woman beneath the performance. After the conversation there will be an opportunity to ask questions, buy books and have them signed. Part of Stories From Sweden, supported by the Swedish Arts Council in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy, UK. Agnes Lidbeck Agnes Lidbeck is one of Sweden’s most prominent and versatile contemporary writers. She made her literary debut with Supporting Act in 2017, which was shortlisted for the Svenska Dagbladet Prize and won the Borås Tidning Debut Novel Prize. She went on to write Förlåten (‘Forgiven’, 2018), Gå förlorad (‘Get Lost’, 2019), Nikes bok (‘Nike's Book’, 2021) and All min kärlek (‘All my Love’, 2023). Lidbeck also writes for the stage and is known for her sharp, minimalist style. Nichola Smalley Nichola Smalley is a translator of Swedish and Norwegian literature. Her translation of Andrzej Tichý’s Wretchedness won the 2021 Oxford-Weidenfeld Prize and was shortlisted for the Bernard Shaw and International Booker Prizes. Her translation of A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding by Amanda Svensson was longlisted for the International Booker Prize 2023. An Evening with Mark Billingham & C.L. Taylor | Wantage Silver Band
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Reading
We are delighted to welcome to bestselling thriller writers to Wantage. Mark Billingham was a comedian in a former life, so expect an animated conversation about Crime with some laughs along the way. About the books: What the Night Brings by Mark Billingham Three dead coppers, Tom, maybe four by lunchtime The targeted murder of four officers is only the first in a series of attacks that leaves police scared, angry and, most disturbingly of all, vengeful. As Tom Thorne and Nicola Tanner dig into the reasons for the violence, a deeper darkness begins to emerge: the possibility that these murders are payback. The price paid for an unspeakable betrayal.
To uncover the truth, Thorne will be forced to question everything he stands for. He can trust nobody, and the shocking secrets revealed by one terrible night will fracture his entire world. Mark Billingham is one of the UK's most acclaimed and popular crime writers. A former actor, television writer and stand-up comedian, his series of novels featuring D.I. Tom Thorne has twice won him the Crime Novel Of The Year Award as well as the Sherlock Award for Best British Detective and been nominated for seven CWA Daggers. His standalone thriller IN THE DARK was chosen as one of the twelve best books of the year by the Times and his debut novel, SLEEPYHEAD was chosen by the Sunday Times as one of the 100 books that had shaped the decade. Each of his novels has been a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller. A television series based on the Thorne novels was screened in Autumn 2010, starring David Morrissey as Tom Thorne and a BBC series based on the standalone thrillers IN THE DARK and TIME OF DEATH was shown in 2017. Mark is also a member of Fun Lovin' Crime Writers. Performing alongside Val McDermid, Chris Brookmyre, Stuart Neville, Doug Johnstone and Luca Veste, this band of frustrated rockers murders songs for fun at literary festivals worldwide. It's Always the Husband by C.L. Taylor Welcome to Lowbridge.
Where secrets hide behind every door… When newly divorced Jude arrives in the small town of Lowbridge, she is soon drawn to widower Will, the father of her young daughter's best friend. But Will's past is shrouded in tragedy, with questions that no one knows the answer to – and after two tragedies tore his life apart in just a few short years, gossip and rumours abound about what really happened to the women he loved. As whispers of murder surround Will, Jude becomes determined to uncover the truth – and with her own father's tragic fate haunting her, she refuses to let another innocent man suffer.
Yet in Lowbridge the darkness runs deep, and nothing is as it seems. Can Jude protect Will from a community out for blood? Or will she become the next victim in this web of deceit? Because whilst one dead wife is tragic, two starts to look like murder… C.L. Taylor is an award winning Sunday Times bestselling author of ten gripping psychological thrillers including EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE, a Richard and Judy Book Club pick for autumn 2024, THE GUILTY COUPLE, (Richard and Judy Book Club 2023) and SLEEP (Richard and Judy Book Club 2019).
