Illuminare: Community Choral Concert | Eastminster Presbyterian Church
Apr 27, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Columbia
This concert will feature a collaboration of three local choirs: the Eastminster Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir, the Sandlapper Singers (conducted by Dr. Augusto "Augie" Gil), and the She Sings Women’s Community Chorus (conducted by Ms. Fredna Lee). Together, these 90 voices will join forces with a chamber orchestra for an evening of music designed to inspire and uplift the spirits of the Columbia community.
This concert, the grand finale of the Sandlapper Singers’ performance season, is more than just a musical performance. It is a charitable initiative to raise funds for The Cooperative Ministry, a local organization that provides essential assistance to families in need, offering support for utilities and financial literacy. The choirs will perform a varied program of choral selections by Hailstork, Stroope, and Trotta, in addition to the centerpiece of the evening:
Illuminare
, a 24-minute work by composer Elaine Hagenberg.
Illuminare
is a poignant, five-movement piece for SATB choir and chamber orchestra that takes the listener on a journey from darkness to light. Drawing on sacred Latin, Greek, and English texts, it explores themes of hope, peace, and the eventual triumph of light over the shadows of despair. Its instrumentation features brilliant string passages, thought provoking interludes, and powerful climaxes. The work encapsulates the very essence of the concert's mission—bringing light and hope to those in need. The concert also aligns perfectly with the theme of the Sandlapper Singers' 2024-25 season, "From Darkness to Light: Songs of Perseverance and Hope," reflecting the resilience of the human spirit.

Slim Man | The Collective - Encore
Apr 27, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Columbia
Conceived on the Isle of Capri in Italy, he was born in Baltimore, Maryland.
When he was 5 years old, Slim Man saw a movie with his dad. That film was The Five Pennies, and when Slim Boy saw Louis Armstrong play the trumpet and sing, he told his Dad, ”That’s what I want to do.”
Slim Man studied trumpet for the next 9 years, and taught himself how to play piano and guitar. After studying piano, composition, and harmony at Peabody Institute in Baltimore, MD, Slim Man got signed as a songwriter to Motown Records. He’s had songs recorded by the Temptations, Angela Bofill, Carl Anderson, and others.
Slim Man recorded a CD for Motown, which gave birth to his signature style–a unique blend of jazz, soul, and pop.
Slim Man went on to form the band BootCamp, who had two of the first 100 videos ever played on MTV. Those videos catapulted BootCamp into a successful concert career, performing with The B-52s, Squeeze, Split Enz, Johnny Winter, and others.
After BootCamp broke up, Slim Man organized and hosted a nationwide country music talent contest. It was during this contest that he got the nickname Slim Man. Slim’s big discovery during the contest was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at a honky-tonk called Tulsa City Limits.
The guy who won the contest that night was Ronnie Dunn, who went on to win the national finals in Nashville, and later hooked up with Kix Brooks to form the multiple Grammy award-winning country music duo, Brooks and Dunn.
