Third Place Books is delighted to welcome Elena Taylor and Jeff Ayersto our Lake Forest Park store! They will be discussing their novels A Cold, Cold World and Cold Burn. A Cold, Cold World follows a female sheriff striving to fill her late father's boots as a deadly snowstorm engulfs her small Washington mountain town. Meanwhile, in Cold Burn, mysterious deaths at several national parks signal a looming global catastrophe. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is recommended in advance. About A Cold, Cold World. . .A female sheriff tries to fill her late father’s boots and be the sheriff her small Washington State mountain town needs as a deadly snow storm engulfs the town, in this dark, twisty mystery. The world felt pure. Nature made the location pristine again, hiding the scene from prying eyes. As if no one had died there at all. In the months since Bet Rivers solved her first murder investigation and secured the sheriff’s seat in Collier, she’s remained determined to keep her town safe. With a massive snowstorm looming, it’s more important than ever that she stays vigilant. When Bet gets a call that a family of tourists has stumbled across a teen injured in a snowmobile accident on a mountain ridge, she braves the storm to investigate. However, once she arrives at the scene of the accident it’s clear to Bet that the teen is not injured; he’s dead. And has been for some time. . . Investigating a possible homicide is hard enough, but with the worst snowstorm the valley has seen in years threatening the safety of her town, not to mention the integrity of her crime scenes – as they seem to be mounting up as well – Bet has to move fast to uncover the complicated truth and prove that she’s worthy of keeping her father’s badge. About Cold Burn. . .Agent Michael Walker returns when multiple deaths at Glacier Bay National Park are just the first steps in a potential global disaster. National Park Service investigator Michael Walker is battling smugglers stealing priceless artifacts when he’s dispatched to Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska, where, in the first stage of a potential global disaster, a team of scientists has gone missing. Meanwhile, in Florida’s Everglades National Park, FBI special investigator Gina Delgado traces the murder of an environmental science intern back to another U.S. Geological Survey team’s ongoing experiments that are decimating the fragile ecosystem. That is before she’s dispatched to the scene of a sunken U.S. nuclear submarine, the entire crew of which has inexplicably been killed. The connection between these disparate investigations lies in a deadly prehistoric organism, frozen for thousands of years in the ice until global warming brings it back to life in what could mean the death of all life on Earth. An organism that a rogue billionaire sees as the ultimate fuel source and a Russian strongman views as the ultimate weapon that can shift the global balance of power forever. Against that backdrop, Walker and Delgado find themselves desperately doing battle across multiple fronts against an ancient, unstoppable enemy. Elena Taylor spent several years working in theater as a playwright, director, designer, and educator before turning her storytelling skills to novels. Her first series, the Eddie Shoes Mysteries—written under the name Elena Hartwell—introduced a quirky mother/daughter crime-fighting duo. The Bet Rivers mystery series returned Elena to her dramatic roots, with darker, more atmospheric novels. Elena is a senior developmental editor with Allegory Editing and writes the Wait, Wait, Don't Query (Yet!) series of short books on writing craft. Her favorite place to be is at Paradise, the property she and her hubby own south of Spokane, Washington. Elena holds a B.A. from the University of San Diego, a M.Ed. from the University of Washington, Tacoma, and a Ph. D from the University of Georgia. Jeff Ayers is the author of several books, including Voyages of Imagination. He has been a book reviewer for the Associated Press, Library Journal, and Booklist, and currently reviews for Criminal Element and firstCLUE. He is a retired public librarian and lives near Seattle, Washington. A. J. Landau is the pseudonym for two authors, Jon Land, the award-winning, bestselling author and co-author of more than fifty books, and Jeff Ayers, reviewer, former-librarian, and author. About Elephant Touch. . .For fans of Sara Pennypacker’s Pax and Ali Benjamin’s The Thing About Jellyfish, Elephant Touch is a contemporary middle grade novel about overcoming grief that will touch the hearts of its readers. Since the sudden loss of her mother, Quinn has been inconsolable. Her aunt brings her to volunteer at a Thai elephant sanctuary, hoping it will be a healing experience—but when Quinn learns about the previous abuse of the elephants she’s there to help, she’s overcome with even more grief. While crying alone by the river one day, Quinn has a magical encounter with an adult elephant. She marvels at the elephant’s show of compassion, and they develop a strong connection. But when an orphaned baby elephant, also grieving her mother’s death, arrives at the sanctuary in fragile health, Quinn is afraid to get involved. To help save the baby elephant’s life, she must be courageous and use her newfound ability to connect with the elephants—not to mention accept the support of her new human friends. If she can channel her grief into action, she just might find the community and support she’s been missing. But can she find the courage to do it? About Let the Light In. . .From the award-winning, best-selling author of Snow Falling on Cedars—a moving father-son story that is also a taut courtroom drama and a bold examination of privilege, power, and how to live a meaningful life. A girl dies one late, rainy night a few feet from the back door of her home. The girl, Abeba, was born in Ethiopia. Her adoptive parents, Delvin and Betsy Harvey—conservative, white fundamentalist Christians—are charged with her murder. Royal, a Seattle criminal attorney in the last days of his long career, takes Betsy Harvey’s case. When one of the guests disappears on the first night, the group assumes she has wandered too far in the stormy weather. About Frog Day. . .In this short book, celebrated biologist Marty Crump leads readers on a worldwide field trip in search of frogs. Each chapter of Frog Day covers a single frog during a single hour, highlighting how twenty-four different species spend their time. Our day begins at midnight in Indonesia, with the rustle of leaves above. It’s not a bird, but Wallace’s flying frog, using its webbed feet and emerald-green skin flaps to glide through the forest canopy. In the early hours of the morning, we hear a horned marsupial frog “bopping” and a wood frog “quacking” to attract mates. At six o’clock in the morning, beneath a streetlight in Honolulu, we meet a corpulent, invasive cane toad slurping insects—and sometimes snakes, lizards, turtles, birds, and mice. At noon, we watch parenting in action as an African bullfrog bulldozes a path through the mud to free his tadpoles from a drying pond. At dusk, in a Peruvian rain forest, we observe “the ultimate odd couple”—a hairy tarantula and what looks like a tiny amphibian pet taking shelter in the spider’s burrow. Other frogs make a tasty meal for this tarantula, but the dotted humming frog is a friend, eating the ants that might otherwise make a meal of the tarantula’s eggs. For each hour in our Frog Day, award-winning artist Tony Angell has depicted these scenes with his signature pen and ink illustrations. Working closely together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Crump and Angell have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two—and a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and all frog fans. Tony Angell is the author and illustrator of over a dozen books related to natural history, including The House of Owls and In the Company of Crows and Ravens. In this eerie, blood-splashed Western, Lish McBride invokes a frontier that is harsh, cruel, and practical...A damned enjoyable novel. —Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Three Dark Crowns Faolan Kelly’s grandfather is dead. She’s alone in the world and suddenly homeless, all because the local powers that be don’t think a young man of sixteen is mature enough to take over his grandfather’s homestead…and that’s with them thinking Faolan is a young man. If she revealed that her grandfather had been disguising her for years, they would marry her off at the first opportunity. The mayor finds a solution that serves everyone but Faolan: He hires a gunslinger to ship her off to the Settlement, a remote fort where social outcasts live under the leadership of His Benevolence Gideon Dillard. It's a place rife with mystery, kept afloat by suspicious wealth. Dillard's absolute command over his staff just doesn't seem right. And neither do the strange noises that keep Faolan up at night. When Faolan finds the body of a Settlement boarder, mangled by something that can’t possibly be human, it’s clear something vicious is stalking the palisades. And as Settlement boarders continue to drop like flies, Faolan knows she must escape to evade the creature’s wrath. Lish McBride is the author of funny and creepy young adult books such as Hold Me Closer, Necromancer; Necromancing the Stone; Firebug; Pyromantic; and Curses. She has published short stories on Tor.com, and in the anthologies Cornered, What to Read in the Rain, and Kisses & Curses. Registration is recommended in advance. About If I Stopped Haunting You. . .It's been months since horror author Penelope Skinner threw a book at Neil Storm. But he was so infuriating, with his sparkling green eyes and his bestselling horror novels that claimed to break Native stereotypes. And now she’s a publishing pariah and hasn’t been able to write a word since. So when her friend invites her on a too-good-to-be-true writers retreat in a supposedly haunted Scottish castle, she seizes the opportunity. Of course, some things really are too good to be true. Neil wants nothing less than to be trapped in a castle with the frustratingly adorable woman who threw a book at him. She drew blood! Worse still, she unleashed a serious case of self-doubt! Neil is terrified to write another bestselling “book without a soul,” as Pen called it. All Neil wants is to find inspiration, while completely avoiding her. But as the retreat begins, Pen and Neil are stunned to find themselves trapped in a real-life ghost story. Even more horrifying, they’re stuck together and a truly shocking (extremely hot) almost-kiss has left them rethinking their feelings, and… maybe they shouldn’t have been enemies at all? But if they can’t stop the ghosts pursuing them, they may never have the chance to find out. Colby Wilkens is a queer white and Choctaw-Cherokee author with a heart for adventure. When she’s not traveling, she can be found in the Pacific Northwest on unceded traditional land of the Coast Salish Peoples with her partner, 2 cats, and a vast collection of books and candles. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Overture to Murder . .The curtain comes down on murder in Overture to Murder, the third novel of the Julia Kogan Opera Mystery series. Julia heads to the San Francisco Opera, this time with her significant other, former NYPD detective Larry Somers, and their five-year-old daughter Rebecca. Julia is under inordinate amounts of pressure as she replaces the ailing concertmaster, Ben, who has suffered serious injuries in a suspicious hit and run accident, which Julia suspects might not have been accidental. Then one prominent company member becomes the victim of a grisly murder, and Julia cannot resist becoming involved in the investigation. As in her previous sleuthing at the Metropolitan Opera and Santa Fe Opera, Julia once again discovers that fiery artistic temperaments, and danger lurking in the dark hallways and back stairways of an opera house, provide a chilling backdrop for murder. This time, however, it’s not only her own life that is in peril. Award-winning Seattle-based author Erica Miner believes opera theatres are the perfect places for creating fictional mischief! Drawing on her 21 years as a violinist at the world-renowned Metropolitan Opera, Erica balances her reviews and interviews of real-world musical artists with fanciful plot fabrications that reveal the dark side of the fascinating world of opera, guiding readers through a dramatized version of the opera world in her Julia Kogan Opera Mystery series. When she isn't plumbing the depths of opera houses for murderous mayhem, Erica frequently contributes reviews and interviews for the well-known arts websites www.BroadwayWorld.com, www.bachtrack.com, and www.LAOpus.com. As a music/opera lecturer, Erica has presented for numerous venues, including the Seattle Symphony; the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of California and the University of Washington; Edmonds College in the Seattle area; and Wagner Societies in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, North Carolina, and Sydney, Australia. Aside from writing and lecturing, Erica spends time admiring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest with her French husband, her daughter, her grandkids, and their respective pooches. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. RSVP is recommended in advance. About Beyond the Wonder. . .More than just a biological perspective on Alaska's wonders, a discussion of potential environmental impacts from tourism, mining, and climate change, a personal travel account, or a collection of dynamic photographs, Beyond the Wonder is a beautiful meditation on nature-one that highlights the importance of untamed places and the role they play in crafting a better world. The grizzly paused in knee-deep water, staring straight at the man behind the camera. Abruptly he bolted, racing full tilt toward Thomas Bancroft, his eyes glued to the photographer's face. The bear kept coming, closer and closer, as Bancroft snapped pictures and frantically debated what to do. Suddenly a sockeye darted out of the water, and just as quickly, the powerful animal veered away to chase the fish. A biologist and scientific policy advisor, Bancroft planned his weeklong trip to the Katmai National Park and Preserve intending to photograph bears, but he ended up finding a great deal more. Having spent much of his professional career in Washington, DC, working to protect places like the Alaska wilderness and now struggling with a deep personal loss, when he finally walked among its salmon, bears, and caribou, emotions overwhelmed him. Wild things are essential to human wellbeing. Whether standing in a crystal-clear river feeling dozens of sockeye salmon swim around his legs, watching gulls lurk around a feeding bear, meeting a thrush by a Lake Clark cabin, pondering conservationist Dick Proenneke's determination, flying over spectacular volcanoes, mountains, and glaciers, or sitting beside a pilot who has lived his entire life in wild Alaska, Bancroft felt a profound awe and respect for Alaska's wild creatures and landscape. He also found himself contemplating his own life choices, family relationships, and career. More than just a biological perspective on Alaska's wonders, a discussion of potential environmental impacts from human actions, a personal travel account, or a collection of 100 dynamic full color photographs, Beyond the Wonder is a beautiful meditation on nature-one that highlights the importance of untamed places and the role they play in crafting a better world. Thomas Bancroft has been a lifelong birder and naturalist. Washington State University Press recently published his book Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist’s View of Wild Alaska. The Press called his book “a beautiful meditation on nature—one that highlights the importance of untamed places and the role they play in crafting a better world.” He holds a Ph.D. in Biology and an M.A. in Zoology from the University of South Florida. His research focused on birds and their conservation. Thomas served in leadership roles for several conservation organizations, where he championed the use of scientific information in U.S. public lands policy and stewardship decisions and was often interviewed for TV, radio, and print media. He is a frequent speaker and writes regularly for the Mountaineers, Washington Ornithological Society, and Audubon chapters. His photographs have appeared in numerous books and publications, including Audubon, Birding, American Birds, and Mountaineer Magazine, as well as at the Smithsonian Natural History and the Burke Museums. Bancroft received the Mountaineers 2020 Service Award for his volunteer work. Yet their catastrophic blind date in college evolved into a seventy-year marriage and a life on a farm on Bainbridge Island with their hens and beloved Labrador Megs. Through the years, the Winters have fallen in and out of lockstep, and out of their haunting losses and guarded secrets, a dependable partnership has been forged.
