Susan Muaddi Darraj: "Behind You is the Sea" | Enoch Pratt Free Library - Hamilton Branch
May 17, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
An exciting debut novel that gives voice to the diverse residents of a Palestinian American community in Baltimore—from young activists in conflict with their traditional parents to the poor who clean for the rich—lives which intersect across divides of class, generation, and religion. Funny and touching, Behind You Is the Sea brings us into the homes and lives of three main families—the Baladis, the Salamehs, and the Ammars—Palestinian immigrants who’ve all found a different welcome in America. Their various fates and struggles cause their community dynamic to sizzle and sometimes explode: The wealthy Ammar family employs young Maysoon Baladi, whose own family struggles financially, to clean up after their spoiled teenagers. Meanwhile, Marcus Salameh confronts his father in an effort to protect his younger sister for “dishonoring” their name. Only a trip to Palestine, where Marcus experiences an unexpected and dramatic transformation, can bridge this seemingly unbridgeable divide between the two generations. Behind You Is the Sea faces stereotypes about Palestinian culture head-on and, shifting perspectives to weave a complex social fabric replete with weddings, funerals, broken hearts, and devastating secrets. Susan Muaddi Darraj will be joined in conversastion by author and journalist Baynard Woods. About the Author: Susan Muaddi Darrajis the author of American Book Award–winner A Curious Land and was a finalist for a Palestine Book Award. A United States Artists’ Ford Fellow and past winner of the Maryland State Arts Council’s Independent Artist Award, she is also the author of Farah Rocks, the first children’s book series to feature a Palestinian American character. S.L. Price: "The American Game" | Enoch Pratt Free Library
May 22, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
Nearly a millennium ago, Native Americans created lacrosse as a means of training warriors and settling disputes. Co-opted by whites in the late 1800s, played for a century largely at elite east coast colleges, over the past thirty years lacrosse has exploded around the world, becoming the fastest growing sport in the U.S. while exposing the fault lines of prejudice and privilege that continue to dog its image. At the same time, the spiritual nature and dazzling style of the Native game has been elevated to center stage as the brilliant Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) play as a nation unto themselves, maintaining their deep traditions and hoping for inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. Based on seven years of research and observation and crafted with consummate skill, The American Game takes readers inside a unique cultural landscape that nonetheless reflects the wider world. Skillfully weaving in compelling action on the field from World Championships to tense NCAA tournaments, Price also chronicles the controversies and anomalies that have in many ways defined lacrosse. Racism stubbornly persists—and the Haudenosaunee have endured plenty in their rise—yet few mainstream entities have done more than lacrosse to champion the Native American experience. The Duke rape case and the murder of Yeardley Love still resonate, reinforcing the sport’s elite “laxbro” image, yet women remain the core force powering its astonishing boom. Lacrosse’s longtime link with Wall Street remains, but its bond with elite military service is just as remarkable. Price introduces legendary individuals from Jim Brown (some say he was even better at lacrosse than football), Black superstar Kyle Harrison and the brilliant Iroquois stickman Lyle Thompson, to famed coaches Lars Tiffany and Kelly Amonte Hiller and Onondaga faithkeeper Oren Lyons. All of them, and all who play the game, pay homage to the mystical qualities of the lacrosse stick, which American coaching icon Bill Tierney calls “the thing that makes you special.” A masterpiece of narration and investigation, The American Game is the powerful story of a sport that, perhaps more than any other, captures the complexity of America in its ongoing effort to achieve a more perfect union. S.L. Price will be joined in conversation by former president and CEO of USA Lacrosse Steve Stenersen. About the Author: S.L. Price, a senior writer at Sports Illustrated for twenty-six years, is the author of four previous books, including Playing through the Whistle, Finalist for the 2017 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, and Pitching around Fidel, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Price has also written for Vanity Fair, New York Times, Time, and Oxford American. He lives in Washington, DC with his family. About the Moderator: Steve Stenersen is the Executive Director of Advancement at The St. Paul’s Schools, where he drives fundraising and engagement efforts to support more than 1,400 students and the schools’ $44 million budget. Before transitioning to education, Steve played a transformative role in the national and international growth of lacrosse for 37 years. For more than two decades, he served as President & CEO of USA Lacrosse and led the unification of eight national organizations to establish the sport’s governing body in 1998. Under his leadership, USA Lacrosse expanded membership from 17,500 to 440,000, grew annual revenue from $1.2 million to over $22 million, and invested more than $400 million to fuel the sport’s development. He also spearheaded construction of USA Lacrosse’s $20 million national headquarters, reinforcing the organization’s long-term stability. Steve has held leadership roles on multiple boards, including World Lacrosse, the Association of Chief Executives for Sport, the Baltimore Station, and the Tewaaraton Foundation. His contributions have earned him induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the World Lacrosse Lifetime Achievement Award. About the Program: Doors will open to registered attendees at 6 pm.A local bookseller will be on-site and have books available for purchase.Free parking vouchers are available to program attendees who park at the Franklin Street Garage (15 W. Ta-Nehisi Coates in Conversation about The Message | Murphy Fine Arts Center
May 1, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Baltimore
Please join Morgan State's
Program for the Study of the Middle East & North Africa
and the
Chloe Center for the Critical Study of Racism, Immigration, and Colonialism
for this landmark event. The award-winning, bestselling author and Baltimore native Ta-Nehisi Coates will speak with Sara Rahnama (Morgan State, History) and Nathan Connolly (Johns Hopkins, History) to address the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world. Coates will address how traveling to Senegal, South Carolina, and occupied Palestine caused him to rethink how he had accepted certain myths about politics, history, and social change. This event has been rescheduled from when it was originally set to take place on February 11 but was cancelled because of inclement weather.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the event will begin at 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase.
For students in the Hopkins community who need transportation, please note your campus location when checking out. Free buses will be available. Please reserve a seat by April 24.
This event is free and open to all
to be accessible to as many students and community members as possible. We ask attendees who are able to consider a suggested donation of $20. Your support will enable our program to fund study abroad travel for Morgan students who lack the financial resources to otherwise do so. Study abroad is a critical tool for Morgan students to experience new cultures and expand their understanding of the world. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps make that possible.
About
The Message
:
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell's classic "Politics and the English Language," but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities.
In the first of the book's three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind. Then he takes readers along with him to Columbia, South Carolina, where he reports on his own book's banning, but also explores the larger backlash to the nation's recent reckoning with history and the deeply rooted American mythology so visible in that city—a capital of the Confederacy with statues of segregationists looming over its public squares. Finally, in the book's longest section, Coates travels to Palestine, where he sees with devastating clarity how easily we are misled by nationalist narratives, and the tragedy that lies in the clash between the stories we tell and the reality of life on the ground.
Written at a dramatic moment in American and global life, this work from one of the country's most important writers is about the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world—and our own souls—and embrace the liberating power of even the most difficult truths.

Mobtown Ballroom & Café, 30 W. North Avenue: Monday - Friday 8am-3pm, plus Monday 7-11pm and Friday 7-11:30pm The exhibition title, EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS, is a sardonic nod to what the phrase “exceeds expectations” triggers across the APIMEDA community while also showcasing works that transgress inherent preconceptions of artworks expected to be seen at an AAPI exhibition during AAPI heritage month. The artists selected for this exhibition create spectacularly audacious artworks using their chosen medium and independent visual languages. Through their stylistic choices, humor, subject matter, and more, their artworks visually deviate from all stereotyped cliches within traditional cultural art settings. In addition, this year's Asia North exhibition exceeds the scope of our previous Asia North exhibitions by taking place in more locations in unexpected ways from Motor House to spaces throughout North Avenue Market.
