Tomas Dessureault (born in 2000) is an artist from Abitibi-Témiscamingue with a predilection for painting, though his work also encompasses performance art, film, and photography. He first studied philosophy and sociology at the University of Montreal and then studied fine arts at Concordia University. In the past year, Tomas has showcased his work in several solo exhibitions. In his work, Tomas brings violence and love to life, highlighting their complementary nature through an exploration of themes such as crisis, trauma, urgency, and their coexistence with sensitivity, softness, and beauty. The artist views his works as figurative, existing in a space where all encounters are woven into a narrative of humanity and hope. Tomas has developed a visual language that is symbiotic with the material qualities of the techniques he employs, where gesture and successive layering of acrylics and collage dominate the canvas. The selected works pay tribute to humanity’s passage and its traces.
