How to get to Fenghuang from Furong

After the Furong waterfall, head for Fenghuang, the "Phoenix Ancient Town": two jewels of western Hunan that, together with Zhangjiajie, form the most beautiful loop in the region!

Good news for travellers: both towns are connected by the same high-speed rail line, which opened at the end of 2021. The journey takes only about thirty minutes from station to station, but a few subtleties are worth noting: a limited number of direct trains, transfers from the stations, and the lack of ride-hailing services in Fenghuang.

To help you as much as possible, here is a complete Trip.com guide to getting from Furong to Fenghuang without any nasty surprises.

Furong and Fenghuang: two ancient towns connected by rail

Before we dive into the transport options, here’s a quick recap of these two unique locations.

Furong (芙蓉镇), the town clinging to its waterfall, and Fenghuang (凤凰古城), the city with stilt houses suspended above the Tuo River, are both located on the Zhangjiajie – Jishou – Huaihua line. Each has its own high-speed railway station, making it possible to travel from one to the other in about thirty minutes - quick, right?

It is the final link in the star itinerary of Xiangxi: the famous Avatar mountains in Zhangjiajie, the Furong waterfall, and then the alleyways of Fenghuang. A seamless sequence, almost entirely by rail, that thousands of travellers follow every year!

Taking the high-speed train from Furong to Fenghuang

On this route, the high-speed train is the default choice. It connects Furong Railway Station (芙蓉镇站, Furongzhen) with Fenghuang Ancient Town Railway Station (凤凰古城站, Fenghuanggucheng) in around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the service.

What you need to know:

  • Journey time: Around half an hour, although some services with more stops can take up to 45 minutes.
  • Price: From around ¥53 (≈ £6) in Second Class, around ¥77–¥85 (≈ £8–£10) in First Class, and ¥186 (≈ £21) in Business Class.
  • Comfort: Modern, air-conditioned and punctual trains, as expected across China's high-speed rail network.

The key detail to know: fewer direct trains

Before booking your tickets, there are a few things worth keeping in mind.

Although this route is part of a busy high-speed rail network, the number of direct trains between Furong and Fenghuang is more limited than on other sections, and services can vary from day to day. In other words, you may not find a departure every hour.

A few tips to consider:

  • Check the timetable in advance and plan your visit to Furong around a suitable direct train departure.
  • Book early. Tickets are released 15 days before departure, and direct trains can sell out quickly during peak season and weekends.
  • If there is no convenient direct service, a quick connection (for example via Jishou or Huaihua South) is still possible, but it will extend the journey time. A direct train remains the preferred option.
💡 Trip.com tip: Book this route as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. On this particular journey, the difference between a well-timed direct train and an inconvenient connection can add more than an hour to your travel time.

Getting from Furong Ancient Town to the railway station

Before you even board the train, you will need to make your first transfer, as Furong Train Station is not located right next to the ancient town. Allow around 6 km, or approximately 15 minutes, between the tourist area and Furongzhen Railway Station.

  • By taxi: around ¥20 (≈ £2.20), the quickest and most convenient option with luggage.
  • By local bus: only a few yuan, with a stop at Furong Bus Station.

Make sure to include this journey in your schedule, especially if you are catching a direct train with limited departure times.

From Fenghuang railway station to the ancient town

Upon arrival, the situation is similar: Fenghuang Railway Station (Fenghuanggucheng) is located around 10 km from the Old Town. This final leg of the journey is easy to manage, but there is one local detail worth keeping in mind.

  • Shuttle bus (tourist bus): ¥7 (≈ £0.80), around 20 minutes. Two routes are available: one goes to Qifeng Square (Hongqiao) Tourist Centre, and the other goes to Nanhuali.
  • Taxi: around ¥25 (≈ £2.80) and 20 minutes, using the meter.
⚠️ Important to know: there are no ride-hailing services (such as DiDi) available in Fenghuang. You cannot book a car through an app like you can in other parts of China. Instead, use the shuttle bus or official metered taxis, and carry some cash with you. The good news is that taxis use the meter, which helps avoid unexpected charges.

Taking a private transfer from Furong to Fenghuang

If you are travelling with family, in a group, or with bulky luggage, a private car with a driver is definitely worth considering!

It connects Furong and Fenghuang by road in around 1.5 hours, without the need to arrange station transfers at either end, and allows you to enjoy the scenery or even make a stop along the way.

It is often the most relaxing option for this route, precisely because it removes the two station-to-city transfers that make the train journey more complicated.

Platforms such as Trip.com offer private transfers in the area, including options that combine Zhangjiajie, Furong and Fenghuang in a single day.

Which option should you choose based on your travel style?

  • You are travelling light and watching your budget: the high-speed train is unbeatable for speed and price.
  • You are travelling with family or carrying large luggage: choose a private car to avoid extra transfers between the station and the city.
  • You are completing your Xiangxi itinerary: take the train and enjoy the same railway line from Zhangjiajie and Furong.
  • No direct train fits your schedule: choose a private car, or use a rail connection as a last resort.

Things to know before travelling from Furong to Fenghuang

A few practical and up-to-date tips for a smooth journey:

  • British citizens do not need a visa. Until the end of 2026, British citizens can enter China visa-free for tourist stays of up to 30 days, making this type of trip much easier. Check the latest entry requirements before departure.
  • Book in advance to save time. Trip.com allows you to add your passport details, view schedules in English and pay with a foreign bank card up to 15 days before departure.
  • Your passport acts as your ticket. In most cases, simply scan it at the station gates to access the platform, without needing a paper ticket.
  • Arrive early. Allow at least 30 minutes before departure for security checks.
  • Carry some cash in Fenghuang. As ride-hailing services are limited and many small shops still accept cash, keep some small notes with you and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Why Fenghuang is the highlight of a Xiangxi trip

Fenghuang is worth spending at least one night in. The old town is best explored on foot, following its cobbled lanes and stilted houses leaning above the Tuo River.

At dusk, a boat ride offers the finest views of the illuminated riverbanks, an iconic sight that captures the charm of the Phoenix City.

The town also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area, including Miao villages, the Southern Great Wall, and of course Furong, where you arrive from. Many travellers spend one to two days in Fenghuang, taking time to experience its unique atmosphere both during the day and after dark.

Remember to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak season and Chinese holidays, when the town fills up quickly.

I have to commend the front desk service. The ladies at the hotel front desk and other staff members were all wonderful. Whenever we had a request, they were quick to respond and resolved everything efficiently. They were very considerate of guests' feelings, and every time we passed the front desk, they would greet us warmly. What touched me the most was when they arranged a car to take us to the high-speed train station.

Choosing to stay at Xueqingji in Fenghuang Ancient Town was absolutely the best decision of this trip! My friends all praised my choice of accommodation because it truly is an oriental aesthetic wonderland hidden at the foot of Nanhua Mountain. The Chinese garden design is incredibly exquisite, with pavilions and towers elegantly arranged. The koi pond shimmers with gentle ripples, and in the evening, a misty haze adds to the enchanting atmosphere. You can snap stunning photos from any corner. I highly recommend wearing Hanfu or a cheongsam while strolling through the garden; whether you're walking with a lantern or raising a glass with a sword, the lighting effects are absolutely superb, and your social media will be flooded with questions! I didn't bring a cheongsam this time, otherwise, any photo in one would have been picture-perfect. The guesthouse butler provided excellent service, taking us on a tour and explaining the grounds. Not only is the environment ethereal, but the guesthouse's hardware facilities are also incredibly luxurious, with a constant-temperature swimming pool and smart bathroom fixtures providing a fantastic experience. It offers bustling convenience when you step out, and peaceful tranquility when you return. Friends who love photography and traditional Chinese aesthetics absolutely shouldn't miss this!

It was an amazing hotel, you could literally not ask for more. First, our room was upgraded to a suite. We were having a difficult trip so far, and it felt really nice to be in such a luxurious room. There is a beautiful bath by the window, ornate decorations and a scenic balcony, I would definitely recommend it. Then, there is the location, it is literally perfect. It is far away enough from the center to avoid crowds and noise, but close enough to walk to the most popular spots through a beautiful river path. It also has some of the most beatiful bridges and sights right in front of it with river acess straight from the restaurant. To top it all off, there is the concierge Tian Tian, who solved all our requests, always responding instantly and organizing transport for us, both to attractions and the train station. With her, you can truly relax during your stay. Because of her, we would definitely recommwnd this hotel and would love to return ourselves one day.

This is the most worthwhile treasure hotel to stay at when visiting Fenghuang, far better than those five-star hotels or boutique B&Bs along the Tuojiang River. Room: We arrived very late, and the hotel upgraded our room type. The room was very comfortable, and the bedding met the usual standards of a luxury five-star hotel. Environment: Located on a hill downstream of the ancient town, a private path leads directly to the riverside, passing by Mr. Shen Congwen's tomb. It's a quiet oasis amidst the bustling ancient town. In the morning, the downstream section of the Tuojiang River has few tourists, allowing you to enjoy the Crescent Moon Bridge scenery exclusively. By avoiding the noisy upstream area, you can truly appreciate the beauty of Fenghuang. Hot Springs: They have genuine hot springs sourced from 1800 meters underground. Soaking in them leaves your skin silky smooth. After exploring the ancient town, a hot spring bath washes away all fatigue, leading to a comfortable night's sleep. Parking: EV-friendly, with Tesla and Li Auto supercharging stations. This was my return to Fenghuang after twenty years. I initially planned to book a boutique B&B in town or a five-star hotel along the river, but ultimately chose Wyndham. Throughout our stay, my partner and I kept exclaiming that choosing to stay here was the best decision.

Five, six, seven, eight-star service! I simply *have* to rave about this hotel! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 From the moment I stepped inside, I felt incredibly well-cared for! As soon as we arrived at the entrance, staff members proactively came to guide us to parking, so we didn't have to worry about finding a spot at all. This is such a thoughtful touch for guests traveling by car. Check-in was a series of pleasant surprises. The front desk lady was not only efficient but also carefully put protective sleeves on all our documents – such a perfect little detail! What moved us even more was that, seeing we had children, they directly upgraded us to a family room for free. The room was spacious and fun for kids, and our children absolutely loved it. The staff also patiently explained the touring routes for Fenghuang Ancient Town, detailing where to find good food, fun activities, and the best times for photos. This saved us so much time and effort planning! After a tiring day of exploring, the hotel's laundry service was incredibly helpful. They took our clothes, washed and dried them, then folded them neatly and returned them to our room. It was truly heartwarming. When we returned exhausted from our evening stroll, they had prepared warm and comforting red date and white fungus soup, along with refreshing chilled glutinous rice balls – we instantly felt re-energized! Seriously, I think the entire hotel industry nationwide should come and learn from this level of service! It's rare to find a place that provides such exceptional service and thinks of guests in every single detail. The next time I visit Fenghuang, this hotel will definitely be my only choice, and I'll highly recommend it to all my friends! As pictured ~ upstairs there are also many succulents and an infinity pool, perfect for taking stunning photos!

Newly renovated with excellent facilities and spacious rooms. All the staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and patient. The breakfast was rich and featured local specialties, and it was delicious. The bathroom fixtures were really good. Overall, I was very satisfied. The only drawback is the inconvenient transportation, but it is a county town after all, and not far from the ancient city. It's a great place to stay if you have a car. There are no ride-hailing services in Xiangxi, so you have to flag down a taxi, which can be a bit difficult during holidays, but probably not an issue on weekdays, and taxis are cheap. There were some dried water stains on the tile floor that need to be wiped clean during housekeeping. Still, it's highly recommended.

This river-view room was the best money I spent during my trip to Fenghuang Ancient Town. I'd come back 100 more times just for it! No need to jostle with crowds to see the amazing night view 😭 🏨 The room details really impressed me: ✔️ Super-sized bathtub 🛁 After walking around the ancient town all day, a soak here is pure bliss and instant recovery. ✔️ 24-hour butler service, they even personally came downstairs to pick me up. ✔️ Clean, quiet, and picture-perfect – every corner is a great photo op. 🚗 Drivers, rejoice! The hotel has its own parking lot 🅿️ Plus, it's just a few minutes' walk to the main scenic area. The best part is it's quiet despite being central! You'll get a good night's sleep. Seriously, you'll regret it if you visit Fenghuang and don't stay in a river-view room!

The best part is the hotel has its own parking lot, which is super convenient for self-driving guests like me. It's rare to find a hotel so close to the ancient city with its own parking. The staff are very welcoming; as soon as we arrived, the security guard enthusiastically directed us to a parking spot. The room we booked included a free buffet breakfast, which was delicious. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Fenghuang; it offers fantastic value for money.

First of all, we must praise the owner of the hotel. Although it is inconvenient to travel because of the large number of tourists during the Spring Festival, we still help us transport the suitcase back and forth. I specifically booked this guesthouse because of the pool shown in the promotional video. However, the video was misleading. The actual pool is a tiny splash pad located next to the elevator on the fifth floor, barely big enough for three or four toddlers to play in, certainly not for swimming. What's more, the housekeeper said it wasn't open. I'd like to ask, if it's not open during summer break, will it be open during winter break instead? The hotel's location is a bit far from the attractions, about a 30-minute walk. There are three dryers, but I waited until midnight and still couldn't get a turn. I had to rush to dry my clothes at 7 AM the next morning. The self-service breakfast, however, gets a thumbs up.

The room was amazing because it’s at the center of the ancient city. They also have washing machine which was very helpful although it didn’t have the drying feature but we just hung our clothes so it wasn’t really a problem. The lady at the front desk was extremely helpful. I traveled with my mom (64yo) and aunt (52yo). We had many luggages so we were very afraid of having to carry it up & down the stairs. 1 day before our arrival I texted them via Wechat and they said they’ll be waiting for us at the stair to help us carry the luggages. The owner and the front desk lady not only helped us on our arrival but also on our departure at 8am in the morning. They helped us to buy the boat ticket which I’d say is a must! The boat ride was definitely my top highlight of visiting China. They also helped to book our morning car ride to the station. All in all, their helpfulness was what makes the stay felt so comfortable. 10/10 definitely would recommend to anyone.

Fenghuang doesn't have Didi (ride-hailing service), so taxis are the only option. It costs around 26 yuan round trip from the high-speed rail station to the Fenghuang Nanhuamen Bridge stop. Taking the shuttle bus from the high-speed rail station means going all the way to the end and then backtracking. The owner met us at the bridge and helped us with our luggage to the hotel. The room was decorated with a great ambiance, offering riverside views from the window, and was very clean. It had a modern toilet and a direct-drinking water dispenser. The room had comfortable and clean beds with an enormous bathroom ( you actually went through the bathroom to get to your bedroom, which was a bit odd, but perfectly fine ) The city center by the main river in August can get really crowded and quite loud so we appreciated it very much to be a couple of minutes walk away from it where it was calm and quiet

Our stay in Fenghuang Ancient Town was honestly one of the most memorable parts of our China trip. 🌙✨ The hotel location was perfect — close enough to walk everywhere easily, but still quiet at night so we could really relax. Before we arrived, they contacted us on WhatsApp and patiently explained the route, local tips, and everything we needed to know. They even prepared a very practical map of the ancient town, which was surprisingly useful during our stay. 🙌 At night, Fenghuang becomes incredibly beautiful. The service is OK. Call in advance to contact WeChat and arrange for a guy to pick me up at the bus station. It takes more than ten minutes to take a taxi from the train station, and it costs 22.5 yuan for both round trips. I booked it for the balcony view, but I didn't expect that this store is next to the scenic area, which is quite close to the scenic area. I just can't see the scenic area from the balcony, although there are some lights in the opposite house. Figures 2-3 are the daytime and night views from the small balcony. The breakfast provided is very simple, except for Figure 5, there are rice noodles. I arrived at noon and put down my luggage to visit the scenic area. After dinner, I rushed back to the store to change clothes and take pictures. It is said that the free clothing must be borrowed at a travel photography shop in the scenic area 1.3 kilometers away, so I can only return to the scenic area. And the free does not include headwear and makeup, so I spent 299 to take a set meal, which includes clothing, a full set of accessories, 30 follow-up photos and 10 refined photos. My suggestion to everyone is to change into the free clothing and take pictures when you arrive; if you want a good night view effect, spend money to take a set meal when night falls, which is still very good.

The hotel also offers free laundry service; they even dry and fold your clothes and place them at your door! So thoughtful! I will definitely stay here again next time I visit Fenghuang Ancient City! Every member of my family raved about how wonderful the hotel is! 👍👍

Where to go after visiting Fenghuang

One of the great advantages of Fenghuang Railway Station is that it does not necessarily mark the end of your journey. Connected to China’s national high-speed rail network, it allows you to easily continue to other regions once your visit comes to an end.

Some useful connections from Fenghuang include:

  • To Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, in around 2 hours: ideal for catching a flight or train towards eastern China.
  • To Zhangjiajie, in just under an hour, if you prefer to end your trip with the mountains rather than start with them.
  • To Guilin and its famous karst landscapes, in around 5.5 to 7.5 hours, offering a natural extension towards southern China.
  • To Guangzhou (Canton), also accessible by direct train, allowing you to reach the coast and continue towards Hong Kong.
  • Huaihua South Railway Station, around 20 minutes from Fenghuang, is also a major railway hub, providing more connections to Chongqing, Guiyang and Kunming.

In other words, Fenghuang fits perfectly into a simple Xiangxi loop or a wider itinerary exploring southern China.

Furong or Fenghuang: how long should you stay?

These two ancient towns share a Tujia and Miao heritage, but they require different amounts of time to explore, so it is worth knowing this when planning your train schedule.

  • Furong can be explored in half a day to one full day. Its waterfall and main streets are relatively quick to visit, although staying overnight allows you to enjoy the site after the tour groups have left.
  • Fenghuang deserves more time: plan for at least one night, ideally two. The town reveals its most beautiful side in the evening, when the banks of the Tuo River light up — an atmosphere that is impossible to experience during a brief daytime visit.

Trip.com recommendation: visit Furong in the morning, take a train in the early afternoon, and arrive in Fenghuang by the end of the day. This way, you can enjoy Furong Waterfall in the morning light and the illuminated riverbanks of Fenghuang on the same evening.

💡 The best timing: by booking your train from Furong to Fenghuang around 2 pm or 3 pm, you can make the most of both visits without having to rush.
