We recently visited the hotel to celebrate my wife’s birthday and enjoyed every minute, the staff are very helpful and friendly. We booked a superior plus room with the benefit of a nice balcony overlooking the gardens, unfortunately the weather dictated that we didn’t get full use of it but I’m sure in summer it would be a great place to sit and take in the gardens, we will definitely return.

We really enjoyed this stay over for my husbands 60th Birthday! For us it was an indulgent one night treat, though a lot of people were there for longer and also looked to be enjoying it! Our room was very nice, clean and spacious with a lovely outlook and balcony. The rest of the hotel was also very nicely presented. Our food was pricey but reflected in the quality and presentation. Staff were courteous and the service was very good. It would have been a five if not for: the ongoing building noise outside so you didn’t want to use the balcony (not hotels fault but does rather affect value for money) A bit of a feeling that they were rather trying to earn a bit extra where other hotels at that price maybe wouldn’t. There were some free snacks and chocolates in the room but bottled water was priced at £3.50?? Also there was a bit of focus on pre dinner snacks which didn’t sit well to us alongside the nice gourmet menu which we were happy to pay for. Maybe this is more the done thing now, we don’t eat in such restaurants a lot but in other places have been offered little appetisers.

Breakfast was good although ever day something got forgotten so we had to re ask for items as different staff serve you. There is obviously work needs doing in the dining room as water was pouring through the ceiling while we were there and the wine buckets seemed inadequate catching the water, the staff seemed to just ignore what was happening quite bizarre being seated near it. Our bedroom was very underwhelming, rather dark, broken tiles on the floor in the bathroom, paint peeling, bath panel didn't fit and it wasn't cleaned very well, the towels, bath mat were all frayed as were the robes we put those back on the shelf would not to wear them and we had a roller blind not sure they are appropriate in bedrooms at the price asked and as Hilton gold members very disappointed as you can imagine. The plus for us was Sunday Lunch it was very nice and would not hesitate to recommend if your in the area or a resident. I'm afraid we would not return, nicer places with a view etc in Ambleside

We are Trooper (choc Labrador) and Edna ( field spaniel) and we are both three. We want to share how brilliant this hotel was for us and our human family. The gardens are beautiful and make for a nice small leg stretch. Our room was on the ground floor and very conveniently had a secure courtyard attached for keeping our toys and water bowl in. There was a great walk just across a slightly busy one way road, and the walk gave us space to run and paddle. We noted wildlife and lambs and avoided those. For breakfast we were given our own sausages! Edna had a couple of showers in the special doggy boot room; great facility! As doggy travellers, we had a great time and we really loved the attention from the staff. They made us feel very welcome. Our humans thought so too! We felt sad to leave but we know our family will be coming back soon- can’t wait.. Trooper and Edna. X

Quality hotel set in beautiful gardens. Rooms are clean with lovely decor. Super comfy bed. Breakfast was excellent. Great location in Ambleside with easy walk to centre and to the waterside too. More expensive than other hotels so that’s the reason for 4 star review instead of 5 due to value for money.

Food was very good BUT they now have a policy of allowing dogs into the dining room yes, DOGS. The meal was very good indeed however we had to eat it watching a french bulldog drawling and grunting through most of our meal. The 2 guys that brought it in were also feeding it under the table and staff patting the animal. Obviously being made to feel at home. Not impressed. When you pay a high price to dine with some elegance why on earth would they permit dogs IN the dining room. Obviously owned by french as this is commonplace there. At least the maitre d' removed the 15% service charge from our bill. A 30th anniversary to remember for the wrong reasons. Sacre bleu.

Another wonderful stay at Rothay Manor! Lovely bedroom and very comfortable bed. We had three amazing meals - the lamb and halibut main courses were a particular highlight. There’s a fantastic choice of wines (even wine by the glass) and, as usual, the staff were brilliant!

Not sure what planet Zipperman is on but their review of The Rothay Manor is untrue based on their review of the wine choices alone!! The wine list is very extensive and took us a while to read through (a pleasant experience) and make our choice. We dined in the evening here twice and there were no dogs barking at any point whilst we dined. Just saying!!
