Had booked the Ox Hotel ahead of our road trip to Scotland. Be aware I have referred to it as the OX Hotel as that was the name we had it booked under but it also goes by the Swallow Hilltop and Milton Hilltop. Arrived with a lot of caution after reading some of the horror reviews and thought they can’t be as bad as people were saying. WE WERE WRONG IT WAS WORSE! Blood stains on the sheets! Carpet looked like it hadn’t seen a vacuum in a very long time. Rubbish left on window sill and in bin and it smelt of stale wee and sick. We decided there was no way we were staying here so went down to reception and told them we were leaving. Only positive I can give is we were refunded despite having a non-refundable booking which sort of suggests they accepted that it was totally unacceptable.

Please avoid this hotel at all cost, upon arrival we were asked to pay again even though we showed the receipt. The room was still being decorated. The toilet was not fixed to the floor. When we went down for breakfast we were told again that we were not on the list. Room was very basic window not clean beading missing see photos attached.

AVIOD AVOID AVIOD Staying here as a family and even though the hotel is empty they still put the guest that they do have are put in the most dreadful rooms. The smell of damp and mildew is potent. The mattress was literally non existent. The room was supposed to be non smoking but just had a smokey smell. I don’t really even want to get under the covers or take off my shoes for fear I make get an irritation or stuck to the gross carpets. The hotel doesn’t even appear to be safe. I wouldn’t want to leave my personal belongings here. It’s not even cheap so why are guest expected to pay for these conditions. Ridiculous. Also the booking advertising a pool which is probably for the best but hasn’t been in working order for 3 whole years the staff member said. That just says it all.

This hotel is now known as the Milton Hilltop Hotel. I stayed for two nights with a friend. The rooms were tremendous with huge comfortable beds and all facilities. Staff were very courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. Breakfast was excellent. The hotel has a nice bar where you can relax and drink. The Milton Hilltop has great views and is in a good location, off London Road and only a 10 to 15 minute walk into Carlisle. What a great stay!

Pretty shocking experience to be honest ...it was the cheapest available in Carlisle , and it was STILL over priced , our room had stains on the ceiling , iron burns on the floor .. no hot water for a shower in the morning , no heating whatsoever in the bedroom, after mentioning it to reception , we did get a portable oil heater , but less than ideal ... The breakfast was incredibly over priced for warm low budget food .. oh , and look behind where the food is served , where the wall meets the ceiling , beyond rank ...it was only 60 quid , but next time I'd rather pay more and stay in better ...if you can ..**AVOID AVOID AVOID **
