My husband and I stayed at the Ascos for the week of 1-8 February, on a half-board basis. I booked on the internet as a last minute special, flights separate. The good points: The situation of the hotel is good, just near the entrance to the main road into Coral Bay - but at this time of year the resort is very quiet. The dinner buffet was excellent every night, with a good variety of salads, fish and meat dishes. The desserts were a bit uninspiring and repetitive, but plentiful. The breakfast spread was quite acceptable, but we could never understand why the fruit salad was the tinned variety, with all the fresh fruit available in Cyprus! The indoor swimming pool is a good size, and maintained at a very comfortable temperature. The bad points: The reception staff are incredibly rude and dismissive - I had taken a call at reception one morning and the receptionist asked me how long I was going to be, as someone else wanted to use the telephone. We also found that messages were not delivered promptly. I don't think we saw a smile at the reception desk the entire week. The entertainment in the evenings - BINGO! We didn't stay for the cabaret which was advertised every day, because the bingo only started around 9.15 and finished well after 10 pm. Given that the average age of the guests is around 65, I was surprised to see that the resident entertainers appear to be about 25 years of age, with very little idea of what appeals to the more mature person. The bar/lounge area is very pleasant, but surely they could find a spot for light musical entertainment and dancing, perhaps once a week. We certainly would not return to the Ascos, or even recommend it to anyone wanting a short break.
