Hotel Alma am Anger

Erfurt is probably one of the most underrated medieval beauties among the German cities. Once a town of rich merchants, its core had largely been abandoned during the socialist post-war period and remained intact as a historical ensemble. Beautifully restored over the past two decades it is now a spectacular attraction, full of life, and with nice restaurants abound. Hotel Zumnorde is right in midst of this medieval center. Its front faces the main street "Am Anger", a pedestrian area (with some tram traffic though) within an easy 10 minutes walking disstance from the central station. Entrance is on a side street accessible by car, yet not easy to find -- watch out for the green signposts for the hotel route. Parking in the hotel underground is available at an extra fee, but I used free overnight parking in a public parking lot around the corner. The hotel building is a relatively new structure created within the ancient walls of a historical mansion, very well kept and -- most importantly -- streching out into an inner court that, despite its position in the center of the town, is very quiet. I enjoyed sleeping with open windows, not forced to use earplugs for the first time in a hotel since years. My single room was beautifully appointed, spacious, absolutely clean, comfortable bed. Bathroom with daylight window. A good restaurant offering ample German "gemutlichkeit" belonging to the hotel is adjecent, but there are also many good alternatives in the close vicinity. Any negative point? I had difficulties to find one. I did not have breakfast in the hotel, nor did I use any of the facilities like fitness room etc. Hence cannot assess these points. Alternative hotels? The Pullman opposite to the new Erfurt Opera house is comparable in comfort, but more expensive and not as centrally located.

I had to work at booking this hotel because finding and then using their website is quite challenging. Getting the various pages to present in English is the first hurdle. However, it was worth it . I booked an apartment on the third floor. It was just great….. lovely and well-equipped kitchen and bath, living room, dining area. Very clean and all updated. Super quiet. The reception staff was helpful and pleasant. The location was very convenient within walking distance of the sights, train station (10 minutes), and a shopping center on Anger with everything you might need. I wouldn’t bother with their restaurant. It’s pretentious and the food isn’t worth the money. I would very readily stay here again in an apartment.
