We returned to this hotel after enjoying it so much in 2020. This time we went with 'Jet 2 Indulgent escapes'. Thankfully nothing had changed it is still as charming and friendly as we remembered. Our room was spacious on the ground floor with a lovely terrace overlooking their beautiful gardens. On arrival we were welcomed back by reception and a wonderful bowl of fresh fruit and a bottle of bubbly on ice was waiting for us. We were also pleased to see Colombo the giant tortuous is still there! When we departed after a superb week, we left some information at reception for friends who were arriving that day. Our friends were warmly welcomed and a charming letter, Madeira wine and pastries left for them on their final day, thanking them for taking our recommendation and staying at their hotel. Such a nice touch. We played pool every evening on returning from our evening meal and enjoyed lunching by the pool. Reception can't do enough for you and all the staff are friendly. We couldn't recommend this hotel enough. It is a little out of town and quite high up, but the hotel provides a shuttle bus to and from the hotel, there is also a bus from the centre of town that stops 100 metres from the hotel, and taxies are cheap at between 7-9 Euros from town to the hotel.

Staying at Quinta Jardins do Lago is like being in heaven ;-) The hotel, the room, the food from the breakfast in the garden to the dinner in a fantastic restaurant inside, the service, the surroundings and at least the staff are magnificent. You feel all the time that someone are there to help you without feeling they are pushy. If you want to stay somewhere out of the ordinary at a quiet atmosphere, this hotel is the best choice ever. Really looking forward to coming back to this amazing place.

This is a beautiful hotel above Funchal, surrounded by a huge walled garden filled with birdsong, trees and flowers. Staying at Quinta Jardins do Lago is like being a guest in a country house. The building dates from 1750 and is spacious, light and elegantly furnished. The staff could not be more kind and helpful.

Best hotel I have stayed in. Beautiful setting in fabulous gardens and a lovely suite with balcony but above all, the staff. Every single member was friendly, helpful and professional. I challenge you to find better service anywhere in the world!

Every courtesy was extended to us during our stay. From reception to room service to laundry and the gardens, everything was excellent. The restaurant in the mansion is spacious and well served. All of the staff went out of their way to make us feel at home and cater for our needs

This has to be one of the best Hotels we have ever stayed in. From the minute we were greeted at the front entrance when we arrived until we were waved good bye when we left it was superb. The customer service was first class and all the staff were lovely. We were in superior garden room on the 3rd floor which had beautiful views over the exquisite gardens. It was nice to meet Colombo the 69 year old Tortoise after having reading so much about this special character at the Hotel !! Turns out that Colombo is female and not as thought male. The breakfast every day was delicious with great fresh produce. The pool and bar area are lovely when the sun is out, very relaxing. The sauna needs to be booked in advance, all the towels are provided. Booking trips and getting advise at reception was all straightforward and again nothing is too much trouble. The shuttle service into Funchal is useful unless you are very fit and can manage the steep walk down and hilly walk back up ! Will definitely be returning.

We had a lovely stay. The hotel is situated on a hill above the centre of Funchal. It takes about 20- 25 minutes to walk down. Going up the hill would be a big exercise. The hotel offers several shuttle connections into town a day. Pre-booking is advisable. Otherwise taxis are plentiful and cost are reasonable. The superior room with garden view was roomy and very clean. The interior is traditional, perhaps a little old-fashioned. A few modern touches would have elevated the room experience to today’s standards without disturbing the overall look. The breakfast was a treat with a good selection of egg dishes à la carte. The staff at the reception, at the bar and in the restaurant/breakfast room were very friendly, efficient, helpful and thoughtful. The gardens were a delight with some outer areas still under construction, it would seem. We went to the restaurant on one evening during our stay. It offers good food. Otherwise, Funchal offers an array of restaurants for all palates. A point from a previous reviewer - it is better to consider going up the cable car when: 1) the hill is not covered in clouds, mist or fog, and 2) when there are no cruise ships in the habour.

This is a wonderful, relaxing hotel quite close to the centre of Funchal. The staff are all superb - helpful and charming, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was very comfortable and clean with a good view of the garden and across Funchal to the sea. Breakfast was excellent as was dinner. The extensive gardens are a beautiful oasis of calm and nature with a lovely pool. Make sure you say hello to Colombo the giant tortoise!
