We stayed at Auberge Provence for 2 nights in Sept 09. Belinda was a wonderful host - nothing was too much trouble and she booked all our restaurants, trips etc. The rest of the staff were also great - so friendly and efficient. We stayed in the Lavender Suite, which was beautifully furnished with a super comfortable bed and a huge and luxurious bathroom that we loved. As other reviewers have noted, it is on the ground floor so you may not be able to see whales from lying in bed, but you can get onto the cliff top path right from your patio doors, which is lovely. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious, everything home cooked, and beautifully presented. We felt Hermanus itself was a little disappointing, and it is clearly somewhere that has grown as a tourist town due to the whale watching opportunities - and therefore can be quite expensive to eat out, compared to the rest of south Africa. However, if you go there with the main objective of seeing whales, and not much else, you won't be too disappointed with the town. We would definitely recommend staying at Auberge Provence if you do go there, you won't be disappointed and we will certainly stay there if we return to Hermanus.
