While looking at a river at a hotel of the out-of-the-way among the mountains Time of the supreme bliss to soak in an outdoor bath

"Excellent! This hotel truly offers an authentic Japanese experience. It features its own onsen, complete with both indoor and outdoor baths. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful; despite any language barriers, they made every effort to clearly explain everything. They even offered a complimentary ride to the station for our departure. We'll definitely be back!"

"## Fumoto Ryokan, Kurokawa Onsen - A Northern Kyushu Trip From Yufuin to Kurokawa Onsen, there are three daily bus services: 9:00 AM, 1:50 PM, and 2:50 PM. A quick note on bus reservations: While online booking is available, it requires credit card payment beforehand, which isn't ideal. We don't recommend it unless it's peak season and you need to secure a seat days in advance. Our suggested method is to ask the front desk at your accommodation (like Yufuin Sansuikan, where we stayed) to call and book for you upon check-in. This typically secures a seat for the next day, and it's usually successful unless it's peak season. Phone reservations don't require pre-payment; you can simply pay on the bus. The contact number is 0570-09-3533 (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM). The bus ride takes a little over 1.5 hours and costs 2200 JPY. (Refer to Photo 1 for the timetable.) The bus also makes a brief stop at a rest area just before reaching Kurokawa Onsen. The ryokan provides a pick-up service from the bus stop. If you're unable to contact them beforehand, don't worry – it's an easy 10-minute walk to the ryokan from the bus stop using Google Maps. It's not far, and you can enjoy the charming onsen town scenery on your way. The ryokan's main entrance is located directly opposite a cream puff shop, which coincidentally shares the same name, 'Fumoto.' Be aware that the entrance can be easily missed, as many tourists often gather in front of the cream puff shop, potentially blocking the view of the ryokan's discreet, Japanese-only sign (see Photo 4). There's no need to use the ryokan's public baths; the women's outdoor section, in particular, tends to be quite cold. Instead, the ryokan boasts a large number of private baths, ranging from small to large. As the ryokan has a limited number of rooms and is generally not overcrowded, you'll almost always find an available private onsen. A highlight is the unique 'Tachi-yu' (standing bath), where you can literally stand in water up to 1.6 meters deep. Kurokawa Onsen is a very compact town, so booking a plan that includes both breakfast and dinner is highly recommended; otherwise, finding dining options can be challenging. The meals provided by the ryokan were excellent and definitely worth trying. Although we were a group of three, there wasn't a specific room option for that number of guests, so we regrettably ended up paying for an 'extra person's fee'. Our rooms were quite spacious. We stayed in rooms named 'Taka' (Hawk) and 'Kiri' (Mist), which offered views of the mountains and a pleasant stream flowing right outside the window. The ryokan staff were all young and extremely friendly, with some even being Chinese speakers. Overall, if you're looking to experience the charm of a traditional onsen town, Fumoto Ryokan is an excellent choice."

"There are many public and private bath to choose from in this ryokan. Plus you can get the kurokawa onsen pass (tegata) which gives you access to 3 external onsens in the town (most ryokans in town are participating) within one year of purchase of the tegata. We didn’t book dinner at the hotel, and used the diner time to try Nonohana お宿 野の花 and Ryokan Konoyu 黒川温泉 旅館 こうの湯, then next morning before breakfast I went to most of the onsens in the hotel, then after breakfast we checked out and tried Miyama Sanso 山みず木別邸 深山山荘, all four places (including this hotel) have amazing onsens and views. We drove so it was easier for us to try onsens far from the hotel, but driving in town wasn’t the easiest given narrow roads. The parking lot is a few minutes walk from the hotel, we kept the key with us for easy move around."

"Excellent service by the staffs! Very warm and welcoming. It was raining heavily that day, but one of the staff helped to wipe down our luggage when it wasn't necessary and helped to bring it up to the room as we were too early for check-in. When we came back, the luggages were near a heater for quick drying... just a neat detail that we very much appreciated. The dinner and breakfast were one of our most delicious and memorable meals in Japan. Words are not enough to describe it! The outdoor hot spring doesn't have much a view, but it was still nice! Hope I am able to come back and enjoy the ryokan experience again!"

"Incredible experience of a very authentic ryokan! Good location - in the center of Kurokawa, right on the river bank. Spacious room in traditional style. Extremely clean. It was warm enough thanks to the air conditioner, despite the fact that it was cold and snowing outside. The room has its own bathroom. The kaiseki dinner did not leave me indifferent - it was like a special event - everything was very beautiful and very tasty. Breakfast is also good. The hotel has wonderful baths - one of them is in a cave. The water is moderately hot. Everything was very clean. Many thanks to all the hotel staff for a wonderful holiday - I will come again with pleasure."

"The reserved pick-up time was full when we arrived on the first day. When we checked out the next morning, it was raining heavily. We asked the luggage storage area at the bus station how to get there. As a result, a hotel gentleman drove us to the luggage storage area. They also took us to the bus stop in front and introduced us to where to take the bus. Thank you very much. We didn’t have to push our luggage in the wind and rain. The hotel's breakfast and dinner are very exquisite, with delicious set meals. Dining will be arranged for each guest in an exclusive room. There are many kinds of hot spring houses to choose from, and you can experience different styles."

"Kurokawa Yumeng Rindan Hotel is the most satisfactory and comfortable hotel I stayed in during my trip to Kitakyushu. The hotel has an excellent location. It is the first hotel after the station. From the moment I stepped into the hotel, the warm and thoughtful service made me feel comfortable. The front desk staff was smiling, and the beautiful girl who could speak Chinese carefully introduced the hotel's facilities and services. The hotel's rooms are unique. The layout of the room we stayed in is full of Japanese style. The tatami is soft and comfortable. When you open the curtains, the river view outside the window comes into view. Make a cup of hot tea, sit on the chair on the terrace, listen to the gurgling water, and feel comfortable. And the room is very clean and spotless. The hotel dinner is Kaiseki cuisine. I ate different dishes for two consecutive nights. Hot springs are also the highlight. There are lush forests next to the outdoor hot springs. When taking a bath, it seems to be integrated with nature, and the body and mind are greatly relaxed. The most noteworthy thing is their thoughtful service. The bus tickets we booked for our trip were suspended due to heavy snow. The beautiful Chinese-speaking girl immediately contacted the taxi company to book a taxi for us after understanding the situation. While waiting for the taxi, the hotel decided to use their material vehicle to send us to Aso Station, which solved our urgent need. In general, Kurokawa Yumeng Longdan Hotel is very cost-effective, whether it is hot springs, accommodation or dining, it can bring a good experience. If I am lucky enough to come to Kurokawa again, I will definitely stay at their house, highly recommended."

GGuest UserBest stay! Kurokawa onsen itself was amazing but this stay made it better. I’m vegan and gluten free. With short notice both dinner and breakfast was arranged just like regular Kaiseki style. They were beautiful and delicious. Owner was kind and helpful. Stuff was wonderful. Hot spring was nice both indoor and outdoor. I was sad to leave knowing probably this was the best stay during our trip. Highly recommended!

MMahulaThe most amazing hot springs in the entire trip to Japan, it was worth taking a taxi (the bus stopped due to heavy snow) Japanese rockery garden, close to the river, hot spring pools are indoors and outdoors, and there are family soups. The food is also good. The waiters don’t speak English, but their body language is very rich and the communication is pleasant. It is a place worth visiting N times I plan to go again if I have the chance

QQINGYUNSure enough, the water temperature of the hot springs meets the requirements. In order to adapt to foreigners who don’t like heat, many hot springs have lowered the water temperature, so it doesn’t feel like soaking. The interior style is also the feeling of the Taisho era😄

ЯЯкубовАлексейWe stayed for 2 nights with breakfast and dinner. The hotel has two restaurants (one with a grill, the other for breakfast and dinner in kaiseki style). There is an elevator. Two family onsen, which you can take if they are available. Men's and women's indoor onsen on the 4th floor and an amazing men's and women's onsen in the open air. There is also a private onsen, which you need to book at the reception. We spent most of our time in the open onsen, it is large, beautiful and there were no other people in it except us. Both times we had very tasty breakfasts in kaiseki style, one dinner was also kaiseki style, the second dinner was barbecue. The hotel provides a transfer from the bus stop and also back when leaving, which is very convenient.

MMianbaoalaleiWhat a surprise, a special car pick-up at the bus station🚏, one night and two meals are great! The girl from Zhejiang is beautiful, enthusiastic, and thoughtful. She introduced us to delicious cakes and Dorayaki in the surrounding area. The entrance of the hotel is the starting point for hiking. If you have time, you can go for a walk. There will definitely be unexpected gains! The hot springs are also great. Kurokawa Hot Spring Town is worth visiting again! Unforgettable🥰

GGuest UserFrom entering the parking lot everything is taken care of, the rooms are enormous, the size of and amenities of a decently sized appartment along with a large kitchen and finally a private onsen fit for two people right next to the beautiful Kurokawa onsen river, aswell as a small waterfall creating an absolutely dreamy experience. The Ryokan is a about a five minutes walk outside the city center which is absolutely no problem as you have everything you need there. The gentleman in the reception speaks decent English so even with no japanese knowledge you should be fine They only seem to have four rooms, we got lucky and booked two days ahead, but most likely won't be that lucky. Absolutely would go again, great experience

GGuest UserA very satisfying stay! The design of the cabin is stunning. The two-story independent cabin allows children to climb up and down as much as they like. The owner of the B&B is very enthusiastic. Even if he doesn't understand the language, he tries his best to use translation software to introduce Kurokawa Onsen's attractions and B&B facilities. It really makes people feel like returning to their hometown. Kurokawa is very quiet at night, and you can really enjoy the tranquility and leisure of the deep mountain hot springs. The cabin is fully equipped and can be used for simple cooking. I cooked Japanese sukiyaki pot with the children in the cabin, which was very satisfying! The outdoor hot spring in the B&B is another amazing place. Because it was summer, we didn’t make a reservation for the hot spring. The owner of the B&B enthusiastically invited us to enjoy it (unexpectedly). Unexpectedly, it turned out to be an independent open-air hot spring. I highly recommend making a reservation. It’s too Feel comfortable! The next day, the children were very reluctant to say goodbye to the owner of the B&B and the owner's dog. Along the way, they still missed the comfortable bed (actually just a tatami sleeping mat) in the B&B. I will definitely visit again next time I have the opportunity! JJackieXThe hot spring hotel in Kurogawa was not booked, and Trip.com chose a holiday house in the nearby Tibetan hot spring. Arrive before 6 o'clock, otherwise the staff will get off work. The house is very old, the name is ”Mei”, and the other house is a very new one and should be much more comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped; The indoor hot spring is very hot, you have to try the temperature before entering the water. The towels are small and you have to bring your own bath towels.

GGuest UserA wonderful Ryokan. There is an onsen for your feet in the yard. Inside there is an onsen with an opening window for a sense of freshness from the street. We lived in a Japanese-style room with futons. The toilet is in the room, and the shower is shared. Also, upon check-in they give you a ticket to the neighboring hotel Yukio no Hibiki Yusai with a very good onsen with two pools, one inside, the second outside almost above the river. Very cozy in the evening to sit and warm up.
