Upstairs Hotel

a superb hotel in the city, next to the beach and yet in the city center, excellent location, super friendly staff from the reception to the breakfast room and the rest. nice rooms with a original touch. the breakfast is worth 4 stars and has all you can wish for.

We spent two nights here and it was a great hotel that was particularly child friendly. The bar area has a slide with bean bags, table tennis, a pool table and an old arcade machine and all of these are absolutely free ! So the children can easily play within view whilst you relax. The breakfast was excellent and definitely worth the money. There is an indigo car park, which you do have to pay for nearby. If you look for the underground entrance about four streets on the left past the hotel and then park back near the exit to the car park. When you get back to street level you will outside the hotel itself so carrying your luggage will be easier. We made the mistake of leaving some medication at the hotel and the hotel were very helpful about this and answered our emails very quickly which put our minds at rest. Overall it is an excellent, clean, child friendly hotel with great staff and I would recommend it without hesitation. We will definitely be returning.

We loved this hotel. While booking and reading about the hotel, we were slightly concerned that it would be a bit too “funky” (we are in our 60s and 70s), but it was definitely a nice place to stay for all ages. First of all, we had requested a low floor room, and the request was well taken into account, which is not the case in all hotels. We had booked a big room and it was really wonderful. The room was nice, with separate bathroom and toilet, and with a wooden (or fake wooden) floor, which we always appreciate. Much cleaner and nicer than all those carpet floors in many places. Reception staff was kind, polite, quick and knowledgeable. Breakfast was outstanding. The bar in the evening was very pleasant. Location is excellent. Some minor points we did not like (and hence the 4 “star” rating) were the following. The mattress was very hard, for us too hard, but some people might like it. The floor in the shower was too slippery, this can easily be avoided by other materials. The shower was already narrow, and with the (unnecessary) soapdish attached to the wall it became even narrower. There was space enough for a larger shower. When we came back to the room after 3 PM, it was still not cleaned (the ”YES” sign to request cleaning was put up before 10 AM). Understandable, because it was a very busy Friday with lots of changes, and a basket was put in front of the door later with new towels etc … All these were minor issues, and we will certainly return to this place.

The Upstairs has been our favourite hotel in Oostende for quite a few years now. The rooms are functional, equipped with everything you need and most importantly: super clean! The staff is very friendly and the check-in and -out couldn't be easier. Plus, the hotel is situated directly by the beach, near the main shopping street of the city and is surrounded by delicious restaurants. The hotel itself has its own restaurant too. Their breakfast buffet will satisfy every eating habits, from vegan to gluten-free. Lunch and dinner options are varied, fresh and delicious. We especially enjoyed spending time at the bar, having some tapas and cocktails and playing table tennis (or mortal combat). Our daughter loves the slide in the middle of the lobby and makes new friends every time we visit. The Upstairs is THE place to be.

We stayed at the Upstairs Hotel for three nights. It’s a great hotel in a really good location, close to the promenade. My four year old daughter LOVED the slide (how could she not!). The breakfast was great (albeit an add on). The room was fine, but my main criticisms were that the room is too hot (we were on the 7th floor and there is no AC), the hairdryer wasn’t working, you get no hand soap, and the double bed was just two single beds joined together. If they could fix these things it would easily be a five star rating.
