The Unicorn Hotel Wetherspoon

Very mixed reviews regarding this hotel. Great location and easy to park near by in the Sainsbury Car Park. 24 hrs for £3.00 Check in was a bit slow as you ring a bell and have to wait for a member of the bar staff to come to you. The rooms have everything - much more than expected. Lots of fresh towels, tea, coffee, biscuits etc Nicely decorated and very large rooms. The shower didn't get very hot. Pillows were quite hard. No lift available. Cleaner was lovely and very friendly. Overall the room was good. Although you can hear a lot of noise from the bar below and you can hear people talking in the corridors and doors slamming all the time. Didn't use the bar much as the young girl with brown hair behind the bar was too busy serving regulars to bother with any of our party and the bar manager spent most his time hanging round the front door. We would recommend this hotel. Ripon is a great place to stay.

We stayed for a couple of nights; never been to Ripon before. We were blown away by the staff here! The hotel reception team were pleasant and helpful, the bar staff were polite and efficient, but a special shout to Liz, who with her colleagues looking after the rooms, went above and beyond! One of the best Wetherspoons we've ever experienced!

Brilliant stay we asked for a room at the back of the hotel which we got absolutely spotless clean room and big will definitely stay again Ripon is a lovely place nice and peaceful some really good pubs and good atmosphere would recommend unicorn for place to stay

Since I visited, last year, The Unicorn appears to have adopted a ‘line up in an orderly queue’ system for ordering at the bar. (The app wasn’t working… which was quite irritating but not as irritating as queuing for a drink) So not so much a pub (where you just go to the bar and the bar staff serve you in turn as they remember who is where in the serving order), more a school canteen where the dinner ladies deal with the children as they shuffle slowly forward, one by one. I did say, when it was loudly pointed out to me by a lady that ‘there’s a queue here!’ when I went to stand at the bar (having not noticed the line of people), ‘Oh, I thought that this was a pub’ ‘No-one is pushing in front of me’ she retorted. ‘I’m from Cornwall, we’re quite polite you know. I wouldn’t dream of pushing in front of anybody as I wait to be served. Does this happen a lot oop north?’

For the price, this is an excellent hotel. Although the hotel is situated on the busy market square, our room at the back was quiet and cosy with a lovely view of the cathedral. The hotel is an old building, so lots of stairs and no lift, so anyone with mobility issues might prefer a room on the first floor. There is a small amount of parking at the back of the hotel. The room price also includes free refills of tea or coffee, just ask for a cup at the bar. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and the food (dinner and breakfast) was good. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Big heads up & thanks to all the staff at the unicorn. We stayed for 2 nights to attend a wedding at Grantley Hall & on arrival realised we had forgotten my husbands cuff links! The staff couldn't have been more helpful in advising where to try and find some & even to the point one member of staff offered to bring in her husbands to use! So friendly & welcoming. We will definitely be back.
