The Wilderness Hotel

Our family stay in this hotel would have been spectacular if it wasn't for the rotten attitude of the hotel manager named Galen. We appreciated everything about this establishment until we had to encounter her. After she sent her staff to go knocking around guets rooms after 22:30 to find out if any of us had ordered a certain meal that some guest did not pay for, so that they could cash up and go home. We were fast asleep when they knocked as we planned to sleep early for our early morning flight with a 6:00am departure. They knocked to wake us up to ask us something we had no clue about just to apologize after and leave, and none of us would sleep after until 01:00am. When confronted her to ask her why she sent people to wake us and to express our frustration she did not show any remorse or accountability for her decision and simply told us there is nothing she could have done, she needed to know. When asked for camomile tea she laughed in our faces and said they don't have any and there's nothing they can do to help us after having woken us up, and walked away leaving us standing there. We paid money to ensure peaceful and comfortable night sleep only to be woken up for something that had nothing to do with us and got a stinking attitude in return. Totally unacceptable! Moreover she had prior promised to make us breakfast packs and have them sent to our room for the next morning for our early departure and we never saw those. Very poor and disappointing management.
Botlierskop Private Game Reserve

Ok. Lots to say! We booked a 9am drive and arrived at the dirt road into the reserve with 40 minutes to spare. The road said closed! So we used google maps and information on their website and found another entrance for the lodges. So we drove for 40 minutes thinking we would just make it. But we couldn’t access the site there! So we went into the lodge reception and they called ahead and rebooked us on the 1pm and said they had reserved a table for us in the restaurant. And they told us to ignore the road closed sign! So another 40 minute drive back only to find the table reservation was not for anything complimentary! They could have emailed us to advise us to ignore the road closed sign but didn’t. The manager could barely apologise for what he called a minor inconvenience! To us, that was a stressful 90 minutes of extra driving! We had already filled in the online indemnity form- but they wanted a paper copy despite them saying in the on line form ‘save the trees’. To add insult to injury, the manager said he would come back to us about something complimentary but never did. We then went on the drive, got stuck in a mud ditch and had to wait for an alternative vehicle, which was filthy and uncomfortable compared to the first vehicle. Overall a memorable day for the wrong reasons. At least we saw some incredible animals.
88 Baron van Reede Guesthouse

A great stay - from beginning to end. We were made very welcome by Magda and Christo and shown to a very clean, smart and well equipped room with a stoepe. There is a good swimming pool area with sunloungers. The breakfasts were first class. The hosts and all their staff are very friendly and helpful and booked restaurants for us. The hotel is easy to find, has safe parking and is central for visiting the historical houses and is between 2 excellent restaurants. Ideal stay in Oudsthoorn.
Blue Fern of Knysna

The hotel on one side is in a very quiet place, on the other side to the center it is necessary to go 20 minutes. I didn't confuse the cemetery on the way, well confused people who gathered along the path at the fire. Well done. Apparently this is the trouble of the whole region-the electricity was shut down from morning to evening. Given that it could be either a diesel generator to start or candles to put in.
Garden Route Game Lodge

We visited as a family following a recommendation from a friend. This is not your ‘off the beaten track’ safari. It is a private game reserve, so sightings of the big 5 (minus the leopard who has not been seen on the reserve for 22 years) are more or less guaranteed, but you still have to track them down and sometimes they don’t want to be found easily. The reserve is kept as natural as possible, with animals mixing together and still expected to hunt for their food. It is a fantastic choice for families with young children as the drives are restricted to 2 hours twice a day, which is perfect to keep little ones interested. One thing to note is that you need at least two nights to see everything. The giraffes are kept in a valley, which is a two hour round trip from the base so a specific game drive is set aside for this visit. You won’t see the giraffes just wandering around with the rest of the animals on the reserve. You will however see an amazing collection of animals throughout the reserve and we were lucky enough to sight the baby cheetahs.
Protea Hotel by Marriott Mossel Bay

great hotel in Mossel bay! We didn't realize Mossel Bay was a busy commercial port, but the hotel delivered: a nice room, comfortable bed, plenty of room and a nice sitting area complete with small kitchenette! We had a nice view of the harbor and were welcomed and shown to our room with kind hospitality. The property is nice and we ended up eating in the restaurant adjacent for dinner: Cafe Gannet. It was was packed, and we know why--terrific food and service! Although Mossel Bay itself was somewhat disappointing for us as part of the ”Garden Route”, the hotel was terrific.
