"I gave two stars as I was shocked by the rudeness of the owner on my arrival. I’d chosen this place for its the reported friendliness of the hosts as I was travelling alone. Having read all of the glowing reviews and after receiving emails saying ‘any problems or questions, do just get in touch’, I felt on arrival at 9pm, having been travelling since 6am, the host wouldn’t mind me ringing the bell there on the front door. There were still plenty of people out and about in the town. However, the host leaned over the balcony and shouted down at me that I should have received full instructions on how to get in via email. He was clearly angry and apologizing, I started looking for the email as he was saying ‘look at your emails’. He then shouted down ‘look at me while I’m talking to you’. It was not a pleasant welcome to say the least. When I’d got inside, I met my room mate who (unprompted by me), said the host had been a nightmare to her. In the morning, he laid down the law about how to wash up etc and then placed a massive ring binder on the table and told me to read it! In general, he made an effort to be polite after this which I did appreciate. This host is clearly very keen on cleanliness, order and rules. Come here for somewhere spotless but not for cosy, relaxed or welcoming."

"We booked for a week at the end Sept/ beg October and had a perfect stay. With around 20 rooms, the friendly and informative staff made sure that we were looked after from the moment we arrived. With our plane arriving late we did not get to the hotel till after 9 but the hotel ensured we could still get a meal. The hotel is beautifully furnished, features a large open atrium and the meals are served around the swimming pool in a beautiful courtyard area. The rooms are spacious and the bed extremely comfortable. a. The hotel is located just a short walk from the rock pools and the sea front and also close to the main town square and the various shops, restaurants and cafes Garachico has to offer. The hotel is peaceful, features a small library room and drinks and refreshments can be provided in the public areas. And room service is available too. You can even enjoy a drink on the rooftop terrace with views of the town and mountains. What makes the hotel special is the service. We were always greeted with a smile by the reception team, given information on how and where to get tourist bus passes and places/beaches to visit in the area and all the staff ensured we were well looked after. My wife has specific dietary requirements – gluten free and vegan – and we contacted the hotel in advance to confirm they could cater for this, Every evening she was provided with surprise starters and main courses, the the staff always taking care to check her food preferences. All the food was delightful – nouvelle cuisine style - and plenty of choice for breakfast too. Our special thanks to the chefs and serving staff who went out of their way to meet her dietary needs. The hotel San Roque provides a totally different experience to the huge and impersonal tourist hotels in the south of the island and you are never far away from the dramatic mountainous backdrop and the rocky northern coastline. We will return and would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone looking for pleasant surroundings, helpful and friendly service and excellent staff in a small hotel in a beautiful town with lots of history and interesting buildings and, of course, the wonderful rock pools."

"Lovely hotel - on the plaza - in a beautiful town. Swimmers - an internet search will tell you about the volcanic pools, but the *real* place for a morning swim is off the Muelle dock (left side, as looking out to sea) with all the locals - many retired. The ladder in and out is great with handrails and a rope as well. Other than a plastic mattress which they graciously changed, wouldn't change a thing about this hotel. Note, you may wish to drive from airport avoiding the death-defying switch backs on the most direct route. Will return."

"We stayed in room 6 the Attic which is very large and spacious, more an apartment than a hotel room. It was well furnished, comfortable and enjoyable to stay in for a few days. The building is a restored and preserved original Canarian wood mansion and its great that these buildings are being preserved and used. Where else will you find 14 inch wide floorboards. The wooden ceilings in other rooms are amazing. Having said all that there are downsides. The hotel being only 6 rooms is not staffed by management daily, there are cleaners and laundry personnel on site but management seems to be remote. Breakfast is supplied by a separate business running a patisserie in the alcove during the day, It's ok, varied but nothing special. Our room was spacious and comfortable but being Sea View was exposed to the road noise which you have to accept, it's not too bad but don't expect silence, there's a music school next door too. The room really needs a very good clean, every chrome surface from the kettle to the shower needs descaling and polishing. After 2 days we noticed an infestation of ( we were told ) wood eating moths. We could see the eggs in piles on the floor in several areas. The management were not very forthcoming about the exact species causing the the problem despite being aware. We hope we didn't bring home any eggs in our luggage. Our concerns about this were dismissed and the owner was not transparent about the issue. Garachico is a lovely place to visit for a few days."

"The hotel was charming and comfortable, however, there were queues for breakfast as the number of tables available does not match the number of rooms. Kettle provided with cups etc but when we asked for tea & coffee we were told to buy our own at the supermarket. Why provide the means to make hot drinks but not the ingredients ? The daily bedside chocolate treat somehow was poor compensation. Otherwise an enjoyable stay."
