"Overall, it's clean and tidy. There's a step up at the entrance, but shoes are allowed inside, so be aware of that. There are no restaurants or convenience stores nearby, and the last bus leaves early, so those looking for a room without meals should consider their options."

"We stayed here in February 2026 in the special room. It was gigantic. There was an absolutely insane amount of snow this year, so the surrounding areas were covered in it. It was still absolutely beautiful. Even though we mostly saw just snow it was gorgeous. We did not use the public baths, but I did use the massage chair in one of the bath areas the in room on which was outdoor was perfect for us. The meals were prepared with us in mind and customized as we requested with our food preferences of no squid or octopus. We ate in our own a private room with a lovely view. The service here was top-notch and we’ve been to quite a few ryokan as this was my ninth trip and my to Japan. They had Japanese whisky and wine in the lobby area after to dinner which was lovely. There was even an ability to somewhat customize, the futon bedding. Finally after dinner there was some rice cake snacks and fruit in the room which I thought was great. They are also complementary beverages, including alcohol in the fridge. I would definitely come back."

"I visited in early summer when the countryside was beautiful. Prior to our stay, we received a thorough phone call to confirm matters, and our requests were answered perfectly. My elderly parents were staying with me, and I had booked a room with stairs, so they said I could change the room if there was a room available, so they upgraded me and we had a wonderful stay. Ta. There are antiques throughout the hotel, making it feel like you've traveled back in time. In addition, the elderly and children will be happy because an electric cart will take them from the front desk to the accommodation building. When you take the glass monorail to the observation deck, you can look down on the thatched roof of the hotel, and see the majestic Mt. Akagi and the green countryside, making it feel like a small sightseeing trip. I had previously stayed at the sister restaurant, Yakushi Onsen, but it was a different experience and I was impressed. The room was also decorated with antique chests of drawers and transoms, and the daily necessities and home appliances were well hidden from view, giving a sense of care throughout. Some hotels near the beach have washing machines in the rooms, but I was surprised to find a drum-type washer/dryer in the room. Also, Suikinkutsu in the toilet! The one in the garden of a temple! You can feel the owner's commitment. The bath in the room has an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and although it is not a hot spring, there is also a small TV and refrigerator hidden here. The large public bath is fed by natural hot spring water, and the faint smell of sulfur makes your skin feel slippery when you soak in the hot water. Bath towels are also available in the large communal bath in the accommodation building. The bathroom amenities were KNOLL, the skin lotions were Sekkisei, and the hair dryer was Koizumi. I did not go to the public bath for day trip baths. I stayed for 2 nights and was very satisfied with the food. The meals were served in a private room, using a lot of local ingredients, and I was completely satisfied. Even though we had each of us cook rice in a pot, we were too full to eat it. The breakfast was also luxurious, using ingredients that seemed to be good for the body, and including a hot pot of medicinal soup. If I have a chance, I would like to visit again."

"What a surprise. A gem. Spacious room. Small hot bath on the terrace with a view on the river. Initially, looking at the dining room, I thought food would be basic. BUT the set menu was really really good. 10/10. 1 michelin star. A series of small so well presented european dishes with a small touch of Japanese cuisine. Une oeuvre d'art. Excellent. Breakfast, Japanese or European. Excellent too. Staff was great too. We will definitely come back."

"Stayed overnight at Hoshi Onsen and it was honestly magical. The highlight was soaking in the outdoor bath while snow gently fell around us, super peaceful and almost unreal. The traditional ryokan atmosphere, from the wooden interiors to the quiet surroundings, made it feel like stepping back in time. The onsen itself is beautiful and serene, especially in winter. Service was warm and attentive, and everything felt very authentic and well-preserved. It’s the kind of place where you just slow down and fully relax. Definitely coming back, this is one of those experiences you don’t forget!!"

Not just that but the food wasn’t just good but also offered an amazing in depth experience into the deep depths of Japanese cuisine. I would recommend anyone to come here if seeking a quick easy nights rest as its close to transportation."

"Run by Chinese, communication is easy. European-style decor, but details could be improved. There's a hot spring and open-air bath, and a self-service drink on the first floor. There's a dilapidated hot spring street on the water, and a photo of a renovated ruin with live music is included."

"This is my third time staying here this year. I travel to super luxury inns several times a month, but I've never stayed at a hotel where I could enjoy the seasons so well and where the staff are so friendly that I really want to return. The interior of the building is old, but that makes me feel like I'm in the countryside, and it's out of the ordinary and relaxing. I always choose the BBQ plan for dinner, and at night it's cool and I can enjoy a delicious meal while listening to the chirping of insects. The staff at the BBQ area are also very friendly and helpful, and this was another stress-free and happy trip. With the plan that includes a private bath, you can take it twice during peak season and once on other days. This time I went outside of peak season, so I was able to take it once, but I haven't conquered all 11 types of baths here yet, so I added a 40-minute morning bath for 2,000 yen. The temperature is a little warm, so if you like lukewarm water, you can adjust it by cooling it in the shower. I like warm water, so it was just right. Personally, I really love the rock bath on the mountain that you can take until 6pm! The baths make you feel one with nature and help you forget the busyness of everyday life, which is very relaxing. I always feel sad to leave and want to stay another night (laughs). I plan to continue coming back here. When I have children, I want to bring them too."

"To say that it is a luxury ryokan in a beautiful setting with perfect service and amazing food is a joke. It is a standard business class hotel with an enhanced bathroom - big soaking tub and big picture window - it has no decor, no closet, no space. There is no public area at the hotel (no sitting room, terrace, anything), no outside grounds/gardens (it just sits in the curve of a serpentine road), no views, just your room and a long corridor. The service is non-existent as there are only 2 people on staff at any given time at the hotel, and they are useless and rude, they don't even answer emails or phone calls. Refused to serve us dinner although it is out of town with no other food service nearby. USD300 was a big mistake, $100 would have been more adequate."

"A newly built modern hotel that comes with a private onsen in your balcony. Dinner with fusion which is not the usual for ryokan stays. You get to choose between Japanese or Western cuisine which we opt for Japanese and it was delicious! it's just a 6mins walk down to the Supermarket. Will definitely come back some day again!"

Kurayashiki Hotels in Tone District

"Pro: The room were so clean and very well maintained, its surely larger than what explained in trip.com 16sqm. With indoor balcony, bathroom, toilet; the roomsize should be around 40sqm. The onsen both indoor and outdoor was so good. However, this hotel has very limited service, no check in counter, no reception, no people. First day when we arrived, all the lights in front of hotel was off so we were not sure if this is really hotel. And when we walk inside hotel prepared all documents and keys on the table. Cons; corridor was freezing in winter. There was only heater in the room and specific point at living room. But hotels provided alcohol beverage to warm us up in the living room instead. ^~^"

"The place was clean and the hot springs were great, but when we arrived for dinner, which was supposed to start at 6:30 pm, it wasn't ready. We were kept waiting, and even after being seated, it took over 30 minutes for the shabu-shabu pot and meat to arrive... some people waited for an hour. The website showed luxurious tempura and other dishes, but all we got was shabu-shabu, sushi, simmered dishes, and jelly. Breakfast was also disappointing, and this was with two meals included, costing over 10,000 yen per person compared to a room-only stay! And to top it all off, there were only about five staff members, so I wonder how they plan to get through a public holiday... All the staff were foreigners, and their Japanese was broken. It was heartbreaking to see one person working so hard and apologizing. It's such a shame, especially since they said they were trying to make a living by renovating a closed-down inn."

"I have no complaints about the room, the bathroom, the environment, but the food is terrible. The menu doesn't match the actual food, the English is wrong, and the seasoning is terrible: Chawanmushi souffle, too much water, not hot enough, lukewarm, and calling something like this a grilled dish, using high-quality ingredients seems like a waste; calling the soup stock miso soup, the service is hard, and they forgot to take out the muffler... It doesn't suit the food at all compared to the environment."

"Ultra modern hotel. Each room has beautiful river and mountain views. Very clean everywhere. Private hot spring bath on balcony is wonderful. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Maybe the best standard sized room of any hotel I've visited. We have visited a number of onsen hotels around Japan and this one was our favorite; both for the room and the meals. The problem here is that the beautiful small shops on the quaint street are almost all closed; and not for the season. I know business will pick up in the winter when skiers from nearby Tokyo come here but it is too bad that the shops have failed. Something needs to be done to bring more traffic and create things to do outside the hotel. The river in September is low so no rafting or kayaking. If you like to hike there are many trails in the surrounding areas. "

"Upon our arrival, we're greeted with great staff members, who take our shoes and away and provide us slippers to wear during our entire stay. The dinner was exquisitely served as a big course composed of various several side dishes and main items. We were just blown away. So we came back to the room after dinner to find out that the futon beds, Japanese style mattress & beds, were set up for us to relax and sleep. The breakfast is just a bit less sophisticated but still much more than we could eat, yet impressive for us in terms of the effort required to make them. Same with upon our departure, our shoes are placed back at the lobby orientated readily for us to wear. It just shows Japanese highly attentive level of detail in terms of hospitality. Although the location is its downside, even if you don't have a rental car, I still highly recommend it if you can find a way there."

"As a working couple with a child preparing for his junior high school entrance exams, we were exhausted when we visited. We often visit inns affiliated with the Japan Society for the Preservation of Secret Hot Springs, but the hot springs here are undoubtedly better. As we're in our 40s, we were more interested in a quiet place to relax than money, so the age group was older and there weren't many inbound tourists. This was perfect. Because it was quiet, it was ideal for tutoring elementary and junior high school students in their rooms. We were grateful. The food was so filling we couldn't finish it. The seasoning wasn't too strong, so it was perfect for our family. For some reason, the drinks in the restaurant were so cheap that it almost made us worry. That's why we bought lots of manju as souvenirs on our way home. We'd love to come back."
