Mercure Miyagi Zao Resort & Spa

Mercure Miyagi Zao Resort & Spa ★★★★

📍 Oniishihara Togattaonsen, 1-1, Zao

"The building looks majestic from the outside. The inside however is quite aged at some points. Broken things, a bit of mould etc. However the food and the staff is brilliant. Also the first place where I saw an IKEA Lack table being used in a hotel guestroom… From what I read they are renovating, but this will take a while…"

Hoshiakari No Yado Mahoroba ★★★

📍 39-294, Higashiurayama, Zao

"Very nice room with private bath! It would be even better if can adjust onsen water temperature (too hot) so can enjoy more fully. Food is good too, stay for 2-nights and menu is different. Would consider to come back next time!"

Daikon-No-Hana ★★★★

📍 21-7, Togattaonsen Kitayama, Zao-Machi Katta-Gun, Miyagi, 989-0916, Zao

"This is my third time here. Each time, I've stayed in a different room with a private onsen. This time, it was the Mikazuki room by the river, and the bath was a bit small, just for one person. After checking in, we quickly headed straight for the outdoor private onsen. To my surprise, three Japanese women, also clearly familiar with the place, rushed there too. We were a step behind, but about 10 minutes later, we all finished at the same time, perfectly handing off the bath to each other. The weather was great this time, with sunshine. It's a shame there was no snow, though. I'll have to come back again between January and March next time."

Kappa No Yado Ryokan Sanjiro
8.8 (28 reviews)

Kappa No Yado Ryokan Sanjiro ★★★

📍 3 Tōgattaonsen Motomachi, Zao

"We booked our accommodation for the night at Ryokan Sanjiro in Togatta Onsen. Traveling down the Zao Echo Line from the top of Mt. Zao towards Miyagi, we arrived at Togatta Onsenkyo. Ryokan Sanjiro was built on a small hill on the east side of Togatta Onsen town. It is a medium-sized Japanese-style inn with a number of different paths to follow, each one of which was lovely with its own quaint space. From the large public baths, Katsupa no Yu and Togen no Yu, we had a magnificent view of the Zao mountain range. Dinner at a restaurant called Kamado was a seasonal kaiseki meal made with locally produced in-season ingredients, which we enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere, along with some local Miyagi sake."

Bardenya Soho

Bardenya Soho ★★★

📍 Shinchihigashiurayama-43-1 Togattaonsen, Katta District, Zao

"I could only find accommodation without meals, and breakfast was charged, so I thought it would be okay to check in on the day, and went to check in. However, I was flatly refused, and was told that there were no restaurants nearby at check-out time. I entered the room with a bad impression of it being an inflexible place. It was about the size of 10 tatami mats, with a view of the forest, the bath in the room was business hotel style, and there were two bottles of water in the fridge. It can't be helped if you think of it as the room fee for Golden Week, but unfortunately I won't be coming back. I liked the quality of the water in the bath!"

📍 Higashiura-30 Togattaonsen, Katta District, Zao

"Although there are some older buildings, the hotel is clean and the atmosphere and views are great. The hotel staff were all very nice."

📍 Togattaonsen, 字 上ノ原128, Zao

"It was a trip to celebrate my elderly mother's birthday, and we enjoyed the food, the hot springs, and the room very much. I was happy to see that my mother seemed very satisfied."

Chikusenso Onsen
9.6 (23 reviews)

Chikusenso Onsen ★★★★★

📍 District, Zaō, Togattaonsen, Uwanohara−88−11, Zao

"The food and rooms are average, and while the service makes an effort, it falls short of expectations. The onsen area feels a bit outdated. It’s an acceptable option if you’re already in the area, but not worth making a special trip for."

Tamaya Ryokan
7.5 (2 reviews)

Tamaya Ryokan ★★★

📍 21 Togattaonsen Motomachi, Katta District, Zao

"The room was clean, and the public bath was new and tidy. Private bath access is free; no reservation is needed (can be used whenever no one is present). The water temperature was quite high, which soothed my feet from walking so much during the trip. A 150 yen per person per night fee applies upon check-out. On a clear day, you can easily see a sky full of stars."

Shunsai No Yado Daichu Hotels in Zao

Shunsai No Yado Daichu

"Small inn located in the town. It’s mainly Japanese style but with a few western touches eg beds in tatami room and some fusion food items. The communal bath (indoor only) is not that big but there are also three private baths you can use as much as you want without needing to reserve. I liked the cute samue (pyjama type clothes) that were provided in addition to the usual yukata. We paid ¥44,000 for two people including dinner and breakfast. The drinks were included in the price but there were set times eg bar from 3:00 to 5:30 then drinks during dinner to 8:00 then nightcap till 9:00. We found it a bit strange that the bar was only until 5:30 as we had booked dinner for 7:00 (the latest time available) and as we only arrived at 5:00 we had to hurry to have a drink before dinner. This was a bit different from what we understood from the website which said drinks were available from check in until the end of dinner. We were also surprised that there the only beer available was Carlsberg. It was really strange that there was no Japanese beer not even in bottles. The food was good quality but we preferred the Japanese dishes to the western fusion dishes. Probably we will not go there again as we prefer a more traditional atmosphere with a view and outdoor bath. However we chose it because it is near Sendai and we needed to return our rental car the following morning. The other onsen towns nearby tend to mainly have big hotels so at least this was small and charming even if not totally to our individual taste."

Mercure Miyagi Zao Resort & Spa ★★★★
"This was my first time visiting, and I was impressed by how large, spacious, and clean the hotel and rooms were. The all-you-can-drink beer and other beverages in the lounge, along with the late-night alcohol and snacks, were an excellent service. We paid an extra 5,000 yen for the dinner buffet. While it was tasty, I honestly felt it wasn't worth the 5,000 yen as there wasn't a main dish. The onsen had an open-air bath, but since it was on the first floor, the walls were high, and there was no view. The onsen itself was spacious and good, but the water temperature was a bit too lukewarm for my liking. The in-room bath was large and clean. Be careful not to lose your room key, as there's a 2,000 yen replacement fee. I would definitely like to stay here again when I visit Miyagi. There aren't any shops nearby, so it's a good idea to prepare your own food beforehand. However, you don't need to worry about drinks or alcohol. All the staff were kind and helpful, which was a plus."

"I think the open-air bath on the room was comfortable and almost in the room except sleeping. The Yakiniku for dinner was delicious, and the breakfast and the number of items were full."

"Located in the Miyagi Prefecture, this local onzen is home to the most relaxing experience with the unique private outdoor Onsen and in-door Onzen. Especially in winter, the Onzen is really charming and picturesque. The convenient way is to use hotel taxi from Shiroshizao station (2.30 hours from Ueno). Staffs are attentive. Breakfast and dinner are in private area. Truly great experience, worth for Instagram photos and your retreat."

"Actually, I didn't stay overnight because I was in a rush, but I heard this place is pretty good, and I'd book it again next time if I have the chance. The reason I booked the wrong place was because the address was too far away, meaning I couldn't get there."

"I stayed here for 2 nights and 3 days, using the Zao Eboshi ski resort. The snowboard rental shop and convenience store were nearby, so I was happy. The food wasn't bad. It might not be the most delicious, though. The food service staff were Bangladeshi and worked hard. The hot springs were perfectly warm and lovely at night, but the open-air bath was too hot to use in the morning. It must have been around 44-45 degrees Celsius. Maybe it varies from day to day."

Chikusenso Onsen ★★★★★
"I stayed at Chikusenso, which I had been interested in for a while because it was a luxury inn in Togatta Onsen. The physical aspects of the inn, its surroundings, the atmosphere and facilities of the rooms are excellent, and most of the staff provide courteous and reliable service. In the evening, there is a mini-concert in the lounge before dinner, so you can enjoy a luxurious and extraordinary experience. seemed like the perfect place to stay. The accommodation fees are also surprisingly high for an inn deep in the mountains of Zao. Although it is the cheapest room, it has a spacious space of 43 square meters. It's a shame that the bath isn't a hot spring, but it's a pleasant experience. There is also free beer and soft drinks in the fridge. A glass of wine will be provided at the mini-concert. I feel like I've reached my limit. Now weekdays @ 46,000 yen. A large suite with a hot spring will cost over 80,000 yen. Luxury accommodation class in Hakone and Atami. However, unfortunately dinner was ✖. A spiny lobster salad that even an amateur could make, a main course of beef steak that wasn't served piping hot, and a Japanese female staff member who didn't give any explanations. (Although the Nepali staff always explain carefully) Late night snack is a curve ball called "bread". However, even if chocolate chip bread is dessert-like and okay, the other is a very ordinary croissant. With a full stomach, I didn't even feel like eating a croissant. As a result, we came to the conclusion that the accommodation was not worth the price. In addition, the breakfast was delicious as usual, so I felt that this was a ``very disappointing'' accommodation."
