Northwest China is not recommended in summer because it’s really something else~
Northwest China isn’t just a “trip,” it’s a “recharge in the wilderness” ⚡ After 8 days driving the Qinghai-Gansu grand loop, you’ll experience salt lakes, deserts, Danxia landforms, snowy mountains, and flower seas, filling your phone’s photo album to the brim 📸 I’ve personally done this route and organized it for you based on the latest 2026 ticket prices and actual pace. Just copy👇
💰 Budget reference (per person, excluding round-trip main transportation)
· Budget carpool version: 3,200–3,800 CNY | 4–6 people sharing an SUV + economy chain hotels + dining outside scenic areas, all tickets included
· Self-driving cost-sharing version: about 4,000 CNY | 2 people sharing fuel and tolls + comfortable hotels, highest flexibility
· Small private car comfort version: 3,500–5,500 CNY | 2–8 people in a small group, driver also a guide, 3–4 star hotels
Main expenses: car rental/carpool share 1,200–1,500 CNY, accommodation 1,500–2,400 CNY (8 nights), tickets about 800 CNY, meals 600–800 CNY. Flights in late August are 30–40% cheaper than July. If your schedule is flexible, aim for this period ✈️
📍 Must-visit spots (2026 ticket prices tested)
· Qinghai Lake: Erlangjian 90–100 CNY, but parking for free is easy to find along the west lakeside cliffs. The lake’s blue, rapeseed flowers, and snowy peaks create a stunning three-color scene, best in mid to late July 🌼
· Chaka Salt Lake: 60 CNY, optional one-way small train 50 CNY, the mirror effect is cleanest after 4 PM. Bring your own slippers + shoe covers, saltwater corrodes shoes
· Dacaidan Emerald Lake: 50 CNY, salt pits scattered in the desert, drone shots are legendary, colors peak 2 hours before sunset
· Water Yadan: 120 CNY (includes sightseeing vehicle), the world’s only water Yadan landform, stunning at sunset, no restaurants in the no-man’s land section so bring snacks
· Mogao Caves: Class A 238 CNY, must book on the official website 30 days in advance, Class B emergency tickets 100 CNY with only 4 caves, no photography inside caves
· Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake: 110 CNY, enter after 5 PM, camel rides about 100–120 CNY, catch desert sunset and starry sky in one go 🐫
· Zhangye Danxia: 93–108 CNY including sightseeing vehicle, viewing platform 4 is the sunset highlight, colors are richest after 5 PM
· Jiayuguan: 110 CNY, western end of the Ming Great Wall, if short on time, just take free photos outside
· Qilian grassland + Menyuan: grassland is free, Menyuan flower viewing platform 60 CNY, golden flower seas with snowy mountains in July, the curve after crossing Dabanshan mountain makes everyone in the car scream 🌻
Free spots along the way: 315 U-shaped highway (strictly no standing in the middle for photos, truck blind spots are deadly), Son of the Earth Gobi sculpture, Heidushan, Riyue Mountain, all free

🍜 What to eat (find by section, avoid main streets in scenic areas)
Xining (first meal on arrival)
· Hand-pulled lamb: highland grass-fed lamb boiled in clear water, dipped in pepper salt + garlic slices, local old brand sold by weight, about 60 CNY per person to eat until full
· Qinghai old yogurt: golden milk skin on top, eat with sugar, 5–8 CNY per bowl, avoid fancy packaged scenic area versions
· Kang pot lamb: copper pot with lamb ribs + potatoes + wide noodles, sauerkraut base cuts the grease
· Sweet fermented barley + niangpi + dog urine pancake: all in one at Xinqian night market/Mojia street, sweet barley chilled with a hint of alcohol is amazing
Dunhuang
· Donkey meat yellow noodles: stewed donkey meat + chewy yellow noodles, add a spoon of chili oil, about 30 CNY per person
· Hu sheep stewed pancake: tender lamb with soup-soaked pancake, small portion enough for 2 people
· Shazhou night market: sand onion beef pancake, apricot peel water (freshly brewed, avoid bottled), fried oil cake, northern grilled fish, best atmosphere after 8 PM
Zhangye + Jiayuguan
· Beef small rice + hand-pulled fish noodles + stir-fried bola: any local-frequented alley in Zhangye Ganzhou lane, stir-fried bola is iron plate stir-fried lamb offal, full of wok flavor
· Jiayuguan barbecue: red willow skewers + nan pit meat, Fuqiang market is more affordable than scenic area entrance
⚠️ All first-row shops on main streets in scenic areas are overpriced, prices drop by half just two shops inside alleys; don’t eat at noodle shops outside Mogao Caves, they’re twice as expensive and taste bad.
🔥 Real pitfalls I’ve experienced:
· Mogao Caves Class A tickets must be booked at midnight 30 days in advance, not 15 days, sold out instantly in peak season
· Chaka small train 50 CNY optional, but at the terminal station, walking 200 meters to the sides means no people, no need to save this step
· Qinghai Lake herders’ pasture entry to flower fields 10–20 CNY, much better than Erlangjian 99 CNY
· Speed cameras everywhere on Qinghai-Gansu route, don’t speed on desert roads, fines cost more than fuel
· Don’t shower or run around the first 2 nights, Xining 2,200 m → Qinghai Lake 3,200 m requires acclimation, oxygen tanks are half price in Xining compared to scenic areas
· Daytime in August is 30℃+, nights can drop to 10℃, bring a light down jacket or shell jacket, don’t believe “no jacket needed in summer”
The healing feeling of northwest China is like standing on the U-shaped highway with no cars ahead or behind, the wind blows and all the city troubles seem trivial 🌪️ After 8 days, you’ll feel like a new person.
