Akureyri travel guide and discussion

Iceland has always been on my bucket list, and I finally made it happen with a friend during winter break! 🥹 But here was the catch—neither of us can drive. 😂 Plus, Iceland's winter weather is notoriously unpredictable, so the idea of a self-drive road trip was completely out of the question for us... In the end, we booked the "8-Day Song of Ice and Fire Ring Road Tour" on Trip.com. We circled the entire island via Route 1 in a private chartered car with a flexible itinerary. It made the whole trip so much more relaxing! For those of you who also "can’t drive but desperately want to see Iceland," here’s the breakdown 👇 🧊 Iceland 8-Day Ring Road Tour | Private Car + 7 Nights Accommodation We chose the [8-Day Song of Ice and Fire Ring Road Tour]. Starting from Reykjavik, we traveled through the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Vik, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri, and Borgarnes, before finally returning to Reykjavik. Basically, we hit all the most classic regions of Iceland in one go. We didn't have to worry about how long to drive each day, where to park, or how to schedule attractions. For two people who can't drive, this was incredibly friendly 🤣 I especially loved the Golden Circle! It is absolutely worth going!!! On the second day, we set off from Reykjavik to Vik, heading straight for the classic Golden Circle, including iconic spots like Þingvellir. After that, we headed south toward Vik and Höfn. The scenery along the way was staggeringly beautiful. Glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and charming towns—everything you imagine about Iceland appears right before your eyes. And this itinerary isn't just one of those "get off the bus, take a photo, and get back on" tours! ❄️ Glacier Hiking is a must-try! One of the activities I looked forward to most was glacier hiking. Actually walking on thousand-year-old blue ice and seeing the glacier up close is a completely different feeling than just taking photos from an observation deck 😭 There was also a boat tour of the glacier lagoon, where you can sail right next to massive chunks of blue floating ice. If you’re lucky, you might even spot "wild seals"! In that moment, I felt: Iceland is totally worth it!!! ♨️ Day 1 at the Blue Lagoon—I loved this arrangement After such a long flight, I really didn't want to start an intense sightseeing schedule immediately after landing 😂 Scheduling the Blue Lagoon for the first day was perfect. We got to soak in the hot springs and relax before officially starting the ring road tour the next day. Beyond glacier hiking and the lagoon, the trip also included ATV off-roading and whale watching on the final day. The 8 days weren't just about sitting in a car and taking photos—the experience was much richer! 🐋 Whale watching on the final day Returning to Reykjavik on the 8th day, I thought it would just be travel time, but a whale-watching excursion was arranged! I really liked this setup. Having seen the glaciers, waterfalls, fjords, and towns in the previous days, ending the trip with whale watching made the whole journey feel complete. ✅ A few more highlights: 1️⃣ Private chartered car—so much more comfortable if you can't drive Iceland's winter road conditions are tricky, especially since we don't know how to drive at all, so we never even considered a self-drive. This tour provides a vehicle based on the number of people in your group. For all 8 days, you have someone driving you to every location, so you don't have to worry about transportation at all. For first-time visitors, it really takes a lot of stress off your plate. 2️⃣ Flexible itinerary—you can adjust it yourself I really liked this part! They offer 1-on-1 itinerary planning. The starting point, route, and actual activities can all be discussed. If there’s somewhere specific you want to go or an activity you’re not interested in, you can talk to the travel planner and adjust it to your liking. Compared to starting a guide from scratch, this method is perfect for people like me who "want freedom but don't want to plan everything themselves" 😂 3️⃣ A full Ring Road tour, not just the South Coast This was one of the reasons I chose this package. Besides the must-see spots like the Golden Circle, Vik, and the South Coast, we also went all the way to Höfn, Egilsstaðir in the east, and Akureyri in the north before returning via Borgarnes. Over the 8 days, we saw everything from the south to the east and the north. Seeing all the different landscapes of Iceland in one trip is perfect for those who want a comprehensive experience. In summary, if you are: A first-time visitor to Iceland / Can't drive 🚗 / Traveling with friends 👭 / Don't want to plan your own itinerary every day 🗺️ You really don't need to force yourself to do a winter self-drive. In my opinion, the most annoying thing about a place like Iceland isn't "where to go," but the long distances between attractions, combined with unpredictable winter weather and road conditions. Having someone handle the transportation, accommodation, attractions, and activities allows you to just focus on the scenery and taking photos 🤣 Especially if you want to hit the Golden Circle + South Coast + East + North all at once, while trying glacier hiking, glacier lagoons, ATVs, the Blue Lagoon, and whale watching, this kind of Ring Road tour is much more convenient. For me, it was simple—no driving, no daily planning, just 8 days of worry-free travel around the island!

Day 1️⃣ First taste of Reykjavik 📍Route: Geothermal area (optional) - Kleifarvatn Lake - Hallgrímskirkja Church - Rainbow Street - Phallological Museum (Address: Laugavegur 116) 💡Highlights: Enjoy a relaxed first day exploring the city and visit the world's only Phallological Museum! Rainbow Street is 100% photo-worthy 🌈 Day 2️⃣ Classic Golden Circle day trip 🚗Route: Faxi Waterfall - Geysir (erupts every 5–10 minutes) - Gullfoss Waterfall - Thingvellir National Park 📸Must-shoot: The stunning moment of Gullfoss Waterfall under a rainbow! The rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates in the national park is spectacular 🌋 Day 3️⃣ Westfjords adventure 🌟Highlights: Snæfellsjökull National Park (Game of Thrones filming location) - Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) sunset 🌌Nighttime bonus: You might see the Northern Lights if you're lucky! We recommend downloading the Aurora Alert app. Day 4️⃣ North to the "Capital of the North" ❤️Heartwarming detail: Akureyri's heart-shaped traffic lights are super heartwarming! Remember to take a photo with the city's landmark 📸 Day 5️⃣ Whale watching & Europe's largest waterfall 🐳98% success rate for whale watching in Húsavík! Remember to take motion sickness medication in advance. 💦Dettifoss Waterfall has strong currents, so be careful and don't get too close. Day 6️⃣ Myvatn geothermal wonderland ♨️Myvatn Nature Baths are highly recommended! A less crowded and cheaper alternative to the Blue Lagoon. 🌋The sulfur smoke from Krafla Crater is incredibly impressive. Day 7️⃣ Basalt canyon exploration ⛰️Stuðlagil Canyon: Iceland's largest basalt column cluster, amazing for aerial photography! Day 8️⃣ South Coast glacier feast 💎Diamond Beach: Ice chunks on the black sand beach look like scattered diamonds. ⚠️The black sand beach has strong winds and waves, so remember to keep a safe distance. Day 9️⃣ Vik area exploration ✈️The plane wreck now has a shuttle bus (every 15 minutes), so you don't have to walk 4 km! 💡Practical tips: 1. For car rental, we recommend a 4WD, as there are many gravel roads. 2. Most gas stations are self-service; remember to get a prepaid card. 3. Restaurants are scarce, so bring plenty of instant noodles and snacks. 4. A windproof and waterproof jacket is essential! A 2,800 km Arctic self-drive journey, every frame is a wallpaper-worthy view 📸 Iceland's beauty is worth crossing mountains and seas to see! ❤️

Volcanoes, glaciers, black sand beaches, and the midnight sun – the most extreme natural landscapes on Earth are all concentrated in this 103,000 square kilometer land. ✨Must-visit top 4 attractions Golden Circle: You can visit Iceland's three major landmarks in one day. Walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park; Geysir erupts every few minutes, with water columns reaching 40 meters high; Gullfoss is Iceland's second-largest waterfall, and a rainbow is guaranteed on sunny days. South Coast scenery: Seljalandsfoss allows you to walk behind the curtain of water; Skógafoss offers a panoramic view from the top of its 400 steps; Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach features black basalt columns paired with giant waves. ⚠️Never turn your back to the sea, as the "sneaker waves" here have swept away tourists multiple times. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon + Diamond Beach: Blue icebergs float on the lake. On the opposite Diamond Beach, black sand cradles sparkling ice chunks, like diamonds scattered on black velvet. In summer, you can take a boat tour among the icebergs. Blue Lagoon: This milky blue geothermal hot spring leaves your skin incredibly smooth. Advance booking on the official website is required, and tickets include a towel, drink, and face mask. It's conveniently located on the way to/from the airport, so it's recommended for your first or last day. 🗓️Recommended itineraries (copy directly) 6-day beginner-friendly route: Day 1 arrive in Reykjavik; Day 2 Golden Circle day trip; Day 3 South Coast waterfalls + black sand beach; Day 4 Glacier Lagoon + Diamond Beach; Day 5 Reykjavik city tour + Blue Lagoon; Day 6 Snæfellsnes Peninsula + return. 8-day Ring Road self-drive route (summer exclusive): Reykjavik → Vik → Höfn → Egilsstaðir → Mývatn → Akureyri → Hvammstangi → Borgarnes → Reykjavik. The Ring Road is 1,330 kilometers long, and traveling counter-clockwise offers increasingly stunning scenery. 🥢Must-try food Icelandic lamb (raised on wild herbs), fresh cod and lobster, Skyr yogurt (thick like Greek yogurt), hot dogs (Reykjavik's famous stand Bæjarins Beztu). 📌Tips to avoid pitfalls Visa: Chinese citizens traveling to Iceland need a Schengen visa; apply at least 1 month in advance. Best time: June–August for the midnight sun, allowing 20 hours of activity per day and the best road conditions; September–October for best value, with the first glimpses of the Northern Lights. Transportation: A 2WD car is sufficient for the Ring Road in summer, but gravel protection + sand and ash protection are strongly recommended. Iceland is windy, so hold the car door firmly when opening it. Gas stations are scarce in rural areas, so refuel when your tank is half full. Attire: Waterproof jacket + waterproof hiking boots are essential for walking behind waterfalls and glacier hikes. Don't forget sunscreen; the midnight sun is stronger than you think. A light down jacket is useful for mornings and evenings, even in summer. Safety: Never get close to the waves on black sand beaches! Do not approach glaciers or ice caves without a professional guide. This is the most breathtaking scenery at the end of the Earth 🌍

We always thought Iceland was only about glaciers, black sand beaches, and the Northern Lights, until we drove the Ring Road in June and were deeply healed by the vast fields of lupines. In memory, the delicate and gentle lupine from folk songs grows wildly on this volcanic wasteland. The waist-high blue-purple waves of flowers spread across the wilderness toward the snow-capped mountains, paired with waterfalls, red-roofed churches, and the midnight sun, turning the barren ice fields into a dreamy Monet-like painting. This is a limited-time scenic beauty exclusive to June and July. 🌿 Lesser-Known Facts about Icelandic Lupines Icelandic lupines originally come from Alaska and were introduced last century to stabilize the barren volcanic soil. Thanks to their strong vitality, they have swept across the southern coast’s fields. Without any artificial pruning, they grow wildly and freely. When the wind blows, the entire flower field ripples like waves—wild yet gentle. Although an introduced species, their full bloom in midsummer remains the most unmissable visual surprise along the Ring Road. 📍 Five Top Photo Spots for Lupine Fields (Convenient for Self-Driving) 1. Snæfellsnes Peninsula · Vík Red-Roofed Church (Iconic Spot) A symbolic Icelandic landmark, the straight road is lined with lupines on both sides, ending at the red-tipped church backed by Hat Mountain, creating rich layers front and back. Under the soft light of the midnight sun, the purple flower sea, blue-gray mountains, and creamy white church frame a fairy-tale scene perfect for photos all day long. 2. South Coast Ring Road|Around Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss Waterfalls The valley beneath the waterfalls is covered with lupines, with flowing waterfalls as the backdrop and layers of purple flowers in the foreground. The mist creates a natural soft light filter. After hiking behind the waterfall curtain, you can stop anytime along the roadside to take photos—no need to search for flower fields, surprises are everywhere. 3. Vík Town Reynisfjall Hillside Backed by the basalt cliffs of Reynisfjall black sand beach, the purple flower sea contrasts strikingly with the black rocks and the Atlantic Ocean. Quiet and less crowded, it’s perfect for atmospheric portrait photography. 4. Sólheimajökull Glacier Valley With snow-capped glaciers as the distant background, vast flower fields stretch to the glacier tongue’s foot. The collision of icy blue, purple, and grass green is magnificent and healing, ideal for wide-angle grand landscape shots. 5. Inland Highlands (After Mid-July) The blooming period is two weeks later than the south coast, with few visitors. The entire mountain area is just flower fields and wilderness—perfect for those who enjoy quiet, off-the-beaten-path scenery. ⏰ Precise Bloom Period & Midnight Sun Advantage · Peak Bloom: June 10 – July 20 (Best on the South Coast), with full flower spikes and rich colors, the prime travel period · End of Bloom: Late July – Early August, some flower fields remain in the north and highlands, while southern fields gradually fade · With the summer midnight sun, nearly 21 hours of daylight daily, you can shoot flower fields at dawn and midnight, doubling golden hour time without rushing for sunset 📸 Complete Guide to Flower Field Photography|Outfits + Lighting + Composition Outfit Recommendations (for Iceland’s variable weather) 1. Prefer white, off-white, or light apricot long dresses for a soft contrast with the purple flowers, maximizing atmosphere; light blue and cream tones also work well 2. Layered dressing: warm wool base layer + flowing tulle skirt, topped with waterproof and windproof jackets; Iceland’s mornings and evenings range from 5-14°C with strong winds and rain 3. Accessories: straw hats, sunglasses, light-colored shawls to block sea breeze and serve as excellent photo props 4. Avoid: dark, heavy coats blend into the background and make photos dull Lighting & Composition Tips · Best times: early morning and midnight golden soft light; avoid harsh noon light; backlighting makes petals translucent and dreamy · Composition formula: flower fields as foreground, distant snow mountains/churches/waterfalls as background for rich layers · Angles: side shots from the road, eye-level shots on hillsides, low-angle close-ups of flower spikes by streams Flower Viewing Etiquette Please do not step on or climb over flower fields; use roadside clearings for photos. Lupine roots stabilize volcanic soil, and careless damage accelerates soil erosion. Beautiful scenery needs our joint protection. 🏨 Recommended Accommodations Around the Ring Road (Convenient for Flower Viewing) South Coast Favorite: Vík i Mýrdal Seaview Guesthouse Close to the Ring Road, a 5-minute drive to the red-roofed church flower fields and Reynisfjall black sand beach. Floor-to-ceiling windows let you see purple flower fields and the sea from bed in the morning. The guesthouse has a kitchen for preparing simple meals with Icelandic ingredients, free parking for self-driving, and smooth routes to southern waterfalls and flower fields. Summer bloom season rooms are tight—book at least one month in advance. Snæfellsnes Area: Hat Mountain Lakeside Cabin A standalone wooden cabin by the lake, stepping outside leads to vast lupine fields. At dusk, you can capture flower fields, Hat Mountain, and sunset simultaneously—ideal for quiet, in-depth photography lovers. ✨ 2-Day 1-Night South Coast Flower Field Itinerary (Self-Driving Friendly) Day 1 Reykjavík → Golden Circle → Seljalandsfoss Flower Fields 08:00 Depart city, drive the Ring Road, stop anytime at small flower fields for photos 10:00 Visit Þingvellir National Park, experience tectonic rift landscapes 14:00 Seljalandsfoss waterfall, hike behind the curtain, shoot tens of thousands of lupines at the waterfall base 18:00 Check into Vík guesthouse, go out at midnight to shoot the midnight sun flower fields, enjoy the purple wilderness alone Day 2 Vík Red Church Flower Fields → Skógafoss → Black Sand Beach Return 07:30 Early morning shoot at the classic red-roofed church flower field spot, soft light and few tourists 10:00 Hike to the top of Skógafoss waterfall, check in at flower fields at the foot 13:00 Reynisfjall black sand beach, striking contrast of rocks and flower fields 16:00 Return to Reykjavík, end flower field journey 🧳 Essential Travel Checklist 1. Waterproof and windproof jacket, waterproof hiking boots—summer in Iceland has frequent rain and strong winds 2. Multiple warm layers for large day-night temperature differences 3. Sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat—strong UV during the midnight sun 4. Camera zoom lens for both flower field portraits and distant snow mountains 5. Eye mask—midnight sun brightness all night, ensures sleep 💡 Travel Tips 1. Self-driving is the best choice; you can stop anytime along the Ring Road at flower fields freely; public transport cannot reach small flower fields 2. Weather is changeable during bloom; bring rain gear but avoid umbrellas as strong coastal winds easily flip them 3. At the end of June, a small lupine market is held locally, offering local crafts and food experiences 4. If you miss the bloom, head north to Akureyri in August to find scattered flower fields When the midnight sun’s soft light flows over the purple flower waves, snow mountains stand silently, and the breeze carries a faint floral scent across the wilderness. This is Iceland’s unique gentleness, turning barren ice fields into a sky full of romance—worth a special summer trip to the flower sea.

🌿 Recommended Trip Duration: 7-10 days (Classic Ring Road) / 3-5 days (South Coast + Snæfellsnes Peninsula) 💡 Why Visit: Every June to July, this land of Iceland, known for its desolation, is gently covered by vast fields of purple lupines. They stubbornly grow through volcanic rock cracks, swaying freely under the midnight sun, framed by distant glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand beaches, creating a unique "alien flower sea" on this planet. This guide combines the latest 2026 bloom information to plan a route chasing purple romance. ⏰ 2026 Real-Time Bloom and Weather · Current Bloom Period (as of July 2, 2026): According to local Icelandic sources, the entire island is currently at the peak lupine viewing period, expected to last until mid-July. Some high-altitude or northern areas may continue until early August. · Weather and Daylight: Summer average temperature is about 10-15°C, feeling cool. June and July have the midnight sun with very long days, perfect for late-night flower chasing. Weather is variable, windy, and can feel like all four seasons in one day; wind and rain protection is always essential. 🗺️ Key Flower Viewing Spots | More than just Vík, these places are even more photogenic 1. Vík í Mýrdal — Postcard-Worthy Spots · Víkurkirkja (Red-roofed Church): Built in 1932, it is Iceland’s most classic lupine photo spot. The church stands on a hillside surrounded by vast purple flower fields in summer. Sunset is the golden hour when soft light turns the church and flowers golden. Recommended to arrive one hour before sunset. · Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Lupines contrast uniquely with the black sand, white waves, and Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks, creating a distinct Icelandic visual contrast. 2. Snæfellsnes Peninsula — Double Romance of Red and Black Churches · Ingjaldshólskirkja (Red-roofed Church in Hellissandur): Built in 1903. In summer, lupines bloom along the straight road, with the white-walled, red-roofed church surrounded by flower fields and snowy mountains. Recommended to approach from the side to capture a three-layer composition of church, golden grassland, and sky. · Búðakirkja (Black Church in Búðir): A pure black wooden church forming minimalist aesthetics with lupines and tundra. The slanting light at sunset on the wooden structure is very photogenic. 3. Reykjanes Peninsula — Floral Surprise Near the Airport Very close to Keflavík Airport, ideal for a quick stop upon arrival or departure. Large lupine fields grow along roadsides and volcanic rock areas. 4. Northern and Eastern Iceland — Secret Spots Away from Crowds · Akureyri Botanical Garden: Home to various lupine species. · East Fjords: Large flower fields along the way, fewer people, beautiful scenery, perfect for self-driving exploration. 🗓️ Itinerary Suggestions Route 1: South Coast Classic 3-Day Tour (Ideal for short trips/first-time visitors) · Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavík, explore the city. · Day 2: Reykjavík → Seljalandsfoss → Skógafoss → Vík (Red-roofed Church + Black Sand Beach lupine photography) → Overnight in Vík. · Day 3: Vík → Vatnajökull National Park (glacier hiking/ice lagoon) → Return to Reykjavík. Route 2: Snæfellsnes Peninsula 2-Day Tour (Lupines + Churches Special) · Day 1: Reykjavík → Snæfellsnes Peninsula → Black Church → Ingjaldshólskirkja (arrive one hour before sunset for lupine and sunset glow photography) → Overnight in Grundarfjörður. · Day 2: Kirkjufell → Arnarstapi Coastal Trail → Return to Reykjavík. 📸 Photography Tips · Outfit Suggestions: Light colors (white/beige) or highly saturated warm colors (red/yellow) dresses to create soft or strong contrast with the purple flower sea. · Best Time: The hour before sunset is the softest "golden hour" light. The midnight sun during the polar day also offers a unique ethereal feel. · Composition Tips: Use red or black churches as backgrounds; use telephoto lenses to compress the flower fields with glaciers and snowy mountains; try low-angle shots to emphasize the spreading flower sea. 🧾 Practical Tips · Transportation: Strongly recommend self-driving as attractions are scattered with no public transport. Reykjavík to Vík takes about 2.5-4 hours; to Snæfellsnes Peninsula about 2-2.5 hours. · Clothing: Windproof and waterproof jackets, waterproof hiking shoes, and warm mid-layers are essential. Wind chill can make it feel much colder than the temperature. · Sun Protection: Long daylight hours and strong UV during the midnight sun require sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen. · Supplies: Few restaurants along the way; bring snacks and water. · Respect: Lupines are non-native species; do not trample or pick them. Churches are active religious sites; please keep quiet. · Payment: Credit cards are widely accepted; carry a small amount of cash. 🌅 Lupine bloom is very short, lasting only one or two months in midsummer. Their flower language is "happiness," but Icelandic lupines symbolize "resilience"—blooming brilliantly in desolation and growing vigorously under the midnight sun. Perhaps that’s why those who have seen them say they remain enchanted. 💬 Which photo made you fall for Icelandic lupines? The red-roofed church in Vík or the flower-lined roads of Snæfellsnes Peninsula? Feel free to share in the comments~

🏖️ Atmosphere/Facilities: Akureyri, Iceland's second-largest city, is located in the north, surrounded by fjords and mountains. Many websites and travel guides refer to it as the "Capital of the North," which filled me with anticipation as I planned a two-day trip, including a whale-watching tour 🐳. However, after visiting, my feelings were mixed—while there were interesting spots, the overall experience wasn't particularly stunning. The city itself is small, and its most distinctive feature is the shopping street 📍 Address: Hafnarstræti 🛍️. Although the street isn't long, it boasts stylish boutiques, handmade crafts, and cozy cafes. In winter, the street is adorned with lights and snow, creating a lovely atmosphere. Beyond that, though, the city center felt somewhat ordinary, especially under the gray and rainy weather 🌫️. I also visited Akureyri's iconic church, Akureyrarkirkja. However, upon learning that there was an entrance fee, I decided against going inside 🙅♂️. Instead, I took photos outside. The long staircase in front of the church offers a decent view, and I ended up running up and down a few times for a bit of exercise 🏃🏻. Surprisingly, I found it quite fun! The highlight of my trip was, of course, the whale-watching tour 🛥️. The cost was around 11,000 ISK (approximately 2,500 TWD). Despite the poor weather and strong winds, the tour company provided warm gear, and the crew was very friendly, which made me feel at ease. Although I only caught a few glimpses of whale tails and missed out on any spectacular breaches, the overall experience was enjoyable and fulfilled a small dream of mine 🐋✨. During my trip, I also visited the city's most famous ice cream shop, Brynja (Brynjuís) 🍦, located at Aðalstræti 3 in the city center. This classic establishment has been serving ice cream since the 1940s and is beloved by locals and tourists alike. Many claim it's a "must-try" in Akureyri. Their specialty is soft-serve ice cream made with natural ingredients, which you can customize with various toppings. However, to be honest, I was a bit disappointed after trying it. Perhaps it was the cold weather or my high expectations, but I found the taste to be just average—not particularly impressive. It felt a bit overrated based on online reviews 😅. In summary, Akureyri is a quiet little city, not ideal for travelers seeking constant excitement. If you enjoy a leisurely pace and want to avoid tourist crowds, it might be worth staying for a night. The whale-watching tour (though somewhat dependent on luck) and the shopping street, along with the church's staircase, are the highlights. Other attractions are optional. For me, these two days wandering the city in wind and snow, despite the bad weather, had their own warmth ☁️. There were regrets, surprises, laughs, and a bit of chill—much like Iceland itself, a country that always seems to defy expectations.

Iceland, known as the "Land of Ice and Fire", is famous for its unique natural landscape and extreme weather. 🇮🇸 Goðafoss | Iceland 💙 The Waterfall of the Gods: Another stunning view you shouldn't miss in Iceland. If you're planning a trip to northern Iceland, you should definitely visit Goðafoss. It's not the tallest waterfall, but it's incredibly charming, especially its unique horseshoe-shaped form. Goðafoss means "Waterfall of the Gods," and it's located on the Skjálfandafljót River. The waterfall is about 30 meters wide and 12 meters high, with water cascading down from a black rock cliff before joining the larger river below. The atmosphere here is even more beautiful when it's covered in snow ❄️ I love the image of the white waterfall contrasting with the black rock cliffs. The surrounding snow clings to the mountains and rocks, while the roadside is lined with golden-brown meadows. When sunlight filters through the clouds, everything looks perfect. Another thing I love is that you can enjoy the view from many different angles; each side offers a different perspective of the waterfall. From some spots, you can see the waterfall in a wide view; from other angles, you can see the water flowing over the rocks closer. If you like taking photos, there are plenty of angles to capture. 📸 Even though this is a fairly famous tourist destination, being surrounded by mountain views, the river, and the sound of the waterfall still allows you to feel the tranquility of nature. Especially during cool weather with a constant breeze, the atmosphere feels very much like Iceland – raw, beautiful, and grand in its own way. 📌 Recommendations before your visit: There are several walking paths and viewpoints around the waterfall. If you come when there is snow or ice, wear non-slip shoes and be careful along the edges, as some areas can be very slippery. It's recommended to allow extra time for enjoying the views; don't rush, as each angle offers a different kind of beauty. 📍 Goðafoss Waterfall, North Iceland 🇮🇸 If you're driving along the Ring Road or planning a trip to Akureyri and Mývatn, consider adding Goðafoss to your list. It's another waterfall that's easy to visit and well worth seeing in person. Some places don't require much activity; simply standing and gazing at the waterfall and listening to the sound of the flowing water is enough. And just soaking up the atmosphere around me is enough to make me happy 🤍 #Goðafoss #Godafoss #GodafossWaterfall #Iceland #NorthIceland #VisitIceland #IcelandRoadTrip #TravelIceland #IcelandReview #IcelandWaterfall #TravelAbroad

🇮🇸 Iceland in April: My 17-Day Ring Road Experience! 17 days, 16 nights exploring Iceland, from Reykjavík and the Golden Circle to the South Coast, East Iceland, North Iceland and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. April was an interesting time to visit. We experienced winter scenery, the arrival of spring and some very unpredictable weather! Here are 5 things I learnt from my trip. 👇 ❄️ 1. Fewer Crowds at Many Attractions April is outside Iceland’s main summer tourist season, so some attractions can be quieter. It was a great time to enjoy the scenery and take in Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. 🏔️ 2. Winter and Spring in One Trip One of my favourite things about April was the changing scenery. We still saw snow-covered landscapes and icy waterfalls, while other areas were beginning to thaw. By the end of our trip, some of the ice had started melting. It felt like experiencing two different seasons in one journey! 🌌 3. A Final Opportunity to See the Northern Lights April is near the end of the Northern Lights season. The longer daylight hours are great for sightseeing, although the shorter hours of darkness can make aurora hunting more challenging as the month progresses. Seeing the Northern Lights is never guaranteed, as conditions depend on darkness, cloud cover and aurora activity. 🧊 4. Glacier Ice Caves and Snowmobile Adventures Some winter glacier ice cave experiences operate into early spring, depending on the operator and ice conditions. We had planned both an ice cave adventure and a snowmobile tour, but both were cancelled because of bad weather and an orange weather alert! Luckily, we had extra days in our itinerary. After rearranging our plans, we eventually managed to experience both activities. 🚗 5. Exploring Iceland by Road April can offer better travel conditions than the depths of winter, but snow, strong winds and road closures can still affect your journey. Some attractions may be accessible while others remain difficult to reach. Always check current road and weather conditions before setting off, and be prepared to change your plans. ⚠️ The Biggest Lesson from My Trip Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring. Our cancelled excursions could easily have been missed altogether if we had planned a tight schedule. Instead, I allowed 1–2 buffer days around our activities, giving us room to rearrange the itinerary. My 17 days and 16 nights weren’t just for sightseeing. The extra time gave us flexibility when things didn’t go according to plan. I also treated East Iceland as a buffer zone. If the weather disrupted our activities, I was prepared to reduce our sightseeing there rather than rush through the rest of the journey. 🗺️ How Long Should You Spend in Iceland? 📍 Less than 7 days — Reykjavík, Golden Circle and South Coast Focus on the southwest and South Coast, with waterfalls, glaciers, black-sand beaches and spectacular coastal scenery. 📍 7–10 days — Add Snæfellsnes Peninsula Explore more of western Iceland, with its varied landscapes, dramatic coastlines and distinctive mountains. 📍 10–13 days — Continue Towards East Iceland Consider Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and some of East Iceland. Allow enough time for driving, sightseeing and possible weather delays. 📍 14–17 days or more — Consider the Full Ring Road A longer trip gives you more time to explore the South, East, North and West without making every day a race against the clock. Our route included Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, Vík, Jökulsárlón, Djúpivogur, Egilsstaðir, Mývatn, Akureyri and Snæfellsnes. 🚙 My Self-Drive Lessons ✅ Understand your rental insurance and its exclusions before travelling. ✅ Check road and weather conditions every day. ✅ Choose a suitable vehicle and tyres for the conditions. ✅ Never enter closed roads or restricted routes. ✅ Avoid driving in severe weather, and allow plenty of time for unexpected delays. ✅ Keep your itinerary flexible. Your safety is more important than completing every stop. ✨ Would I Recommend Iceland in April? Yes, if you want a combination of winter landscapes, the arrival of spring and the possibility of glacier adventures. However, a full Ring Road trip needs enough time to accommodate changing conditions. For a shorter holiday, I would focus on fewer regions and explore them properly. My biggest takeaway? Don’t plan Iceland around perfect weather. Plan for the possibility that things might go wrong, and leave yourself enough time to enjoy the unexpected moments. 🇮🇸 Would you visit Iceland in April or choose summer instead? #Iceland #IcelandRoadTrip #IcelandInApril #IcelandTravel #NorthernLights

The day's itinerary is relaxed. From Húsavík to Akureyri is a 97 km drive, with only one planned stop along the way: Goðafoss. The drive from Húsavík to Goðafoss is 47 km. Half an hour after leaving Húsavík, we could see Goðafoss in the distance. We arrived at the Goðafoss east parking lot around 11:35 AM. Parking is free, and the restroom costs 200 ISK per person. We first took photos and enjoyed the view from the various observation decks on the east bank of the river. There is a pedestrian bridge connecting the east and west banks of the river. The information board at the site describes Goðafoss (via Google Translate): Legend has it that in the year 1000, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, a chieftain and "law speaker" of the Althing (Icelandic Parliament), was tasked with deciding whether Icelanders should convert to Christianity. He successfully persuaded his countrymen to accept the new religion. Upon returning home, he threw his pagan idols into the waterfall. It is said that the name Goðafoss (Waterfall of the Gods) originates from this event. The waterfall is 12 meters high and is located on the Skjálfandafljót river, which is 180 km long and the fourth longest river in Iceland. On the east bank, you can walk down to the water's edge to view the falls. There are parking lots on both the east and west sides. The view of the waterfall from above is more spectacular. The weather was clear that day. The arc-shaped waterfall was powerful, with turquoise water, creating a magnificent scene. The river is wide upstream of the waterfall. By this point, we had visited all 7 famous waterfalls planned for our trip (Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss, Bruarfoss, Svartifoss, Dettifoss, and Goðafoss). Each of these 7 waterfalls has its own unique features and beauty, and all are worth seeing. However, in terms of comfort, convenience, viewing angles/distance, and the number of vantage points, Goðafoss ranks first. Afterward, we walked across the bridge to the west bank to view the falls. The view from the west bank is not as good as from the east. We ate our packed lunch at a picnic table with a view of the waterfall. We spent 2.5 hours at Goðafoss and left around 2:00 PM to drive to Akureyri. July 8, 2026. Goðafoss

THE MOST EPIC ROAD TRIP I’VE EVER TAKEN 🌋✨ There are places that are beautiful. And then there are places where you genuinely have to stop the car, get out, and ask yourself: “Wait… is this actually real?” Iceland is that place. One moment you’re driving beside a black volcanic coastline. A few minutes later, a waterfall appears between the mountains. Then you see a glacier. Then a steaming geothermal area. Then a completely empty road disappearing into a landscape that looks like another planet. And somehow, all of it is the same country. Iceland doesn’t feel like one destination. It feels like several different worlds somehow packed onto one island. If you’re planning your first trip, here’s how I’d approach the ultimate Iceland adventure. 🇮🇸 WHY ICELAND FEELS SO DIFFERENT Iceland is one of those destinations where the journey between attractions can be just as impressive as the attraction itself. The famous Ring Road, officially Route 1, forms a roughly 1,322 km loop around the country and connects many of Iceland’s towns and major landscapes. The official tourism board recommends allowing at least seven days for the route, although adding more time gives you much more freedom to explore. (Visit Iceland) But don’t make the mistake of thinking: “7 days = I can see everything.” You technically can drive around the island. That doesn’t mean you should rush it. Iceland rewards slow travel. Pull over when the landscape changes. Wait for the light. Take the little detour. Stop at a waterfall that wasn’t even on your original itinerary. Some of the best memories can happen between the places you planned to visit. 🌊 THE SOUTH COAST If it’s your first time in Iceland and you want maximum scenery without immediately committing to a full Ring Road journey, start with the South Coast. This is where Iceland begins showing off. And it doesn’t hold back. 💦 SELJALANDSFOSS One of Iceland’s most recognizable waterfalls. What makes it special? You can walk behind the waterfall when conditions allow. Bring waterproof clothing. Seriously. The waterfall spray doesn’t care how expensive your jacket was. The surrounding landscape also makes this an easy stop to combine with other South Coast attractions. 💦 SKÓGAFOSS Then there’s Skógafoss. Huge. Powerful. And impossible to ignore. On sunny days, the mist can create rainbows in front of the waterfall, making it one of those places where you instinctively reach for your camera. But don’t just take the standard photo. Walk closer. Look at the scale of the people standing near the waterfall. Then look up. The amount of water coming over that cliff is wild. 🖤 BLACK SAND BEACHES Iceland doesn’t do ordinary beaches. At Reynisfjara near Vík, the coastline is dramatically different from the tropical beaches most travelers imagine when they hear the word “beach.” Black volcanic sand. Basalt columns. Huge rock formations rising from the ocean. Dark cliffs. And powerful waves crashing onto the shore. It looks cinematic from almost every angle. But this is also a place where you need to take the ocean seriously. Don’t get distracted trying to capture the perfect photo. Keep a safe distance from the water and follow local safety warnings. The landscape is beautiful. The waves are not something to underestimate. 🏔️ GLACIERS AND JÖKULSÁRLÓN Keep driving east and Iceland becomes even more dramatic. Eventually, glaciers start becoming part of the landscape. Vatnajökull National Park is one of the major highlights of the region, while Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon creates one of Iceland’s most unforgettable scenes. Icebergs drift through the lagoon before eventually making their way toward the ocean. And nearby? Diamond Beach. Pieces of glacial ice can wash onto the black sand, creating a strange contrast between bright ice and dark volcanic sand. It’s one of those places that almost looks edited even when you’re standing there. Take your time here. Don’t rush in, take one photo, and leave. Walk along the beach. Watch the ice. Listen to the waves. Look at how different every piece of ice is. This is Iceland at its best. 🌋 THE GOLDEN CIRCLE If you’re staying around Reykjavík, the Golden Circle is one of the easiest ways to experience several classic Iceland landscapes in a relatively compact route. Three major stops usually form the backbone: 📍 Þingvellir National Park 📍 Geysir geothermal area 📍 Gullfoss waterfall Þingvellir is especially interesting because it’s not simply a beautiful landscape. It also carries huge historical importance. This is where Iceland’s Alþingi, one of the world’s oldest parliamentary institutions, was established. Then the landscape changes again. At the Geysir geothermal area, the ground literally feels alive. Steam. Hot springs. Geothermal activity. And Strokkur, the area’s famous geyser, regularly erupts into the air. Then you reach Gullfoss. Another enormous waterfall. Another reminder that Iceland somehow has an unreasonable number of waterfalls. ♨️ DON’T SKIP THE HOT SPRINGS After spending hours outside in Icelandic weather, getting into warm geothermal water feels like cheating. But in the best possible way. Iceland’s geothermal culture is one of the experiences that makes the country feel different. You can find everything from famous geothermal lagoons to smaller local swimming pools. And honestly, don’t underestimate the local pools. For travelers, they’re not only about relaxing. They’re a glimpse into everyday Icelandic life. Slow down. Soak. Talk. Look at the landscape. Then go back outside and continue exploring. 🏔️ THE EASTFJORDS The Eastfjords are where you start to understand why you shouldn’t treat Iceland like a checklist. The scenery becomes quieter. Roads wind around fjords. Small coastal communities appear between mountains and ocean. The drive from Höfn toward Egilsstaðir is especially scenic, with fjords and fishing villages creating a completely different atmosphere from the more famous southern attractions. (Visit Iceland) This is the kind of area where I’d deliberately leave some time unplanned. Because the best part might simply be the road. 🌌 NORTH ICELAND Northern Iceland deserves more attention than it sometimes gets. Around the Mývatn region, you’ll find geothermal landscapes, volcanic formations, lakes, and dramatic scenery. Akureyri makes a convenient base for exploring parts of the north, while the wider region offers routes such as the Diamond Circle. And the further you go, the more the landscape starts feeling remote. That is one of my favorite things about Iceland. You don’t always need an attraction. Sometimes the landscape itself is the attraction. 🌊 WEST ICELAND AND SNÆFELLSNES If you have extra time, head west. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is often described as Iceland in miniature because so many different landscapes appear within a relatively compact area. Mountains. Coastlines. Waterfalls. Fishing villages. Volcanic landscapes. And dramatic viewpoints. Kirkjufell is one of the most recognizable mountains in Iceland and has become particularly famous among photographers. But the bigger lesson here is: Don’t only chase the famous photo. Turn around. Look behind you. Look at the road. Look at the clouds. Look at the tiny people standing beneath the mountain. Sometimes the less obvious composition is the one you’ll remember. 🌌 AND THEN THERE ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS If you visit Iceland between September and April, you have the possibility of seeing one of the country’s most famous natural spectacles. The Northern Lights. But here’s something every first time visitor should understand: They are not guaranteed. You need darkness. You need sufficiently clear skies. And you need favorable aurora activity. The official tourism board recommends giving yourself several nights because conditions can change quickly. Being away from artificial light can also improve visibility. (Visit Iceland) So don’t build your entire trip around one specific night. Give yourself multiple opportunities. And when the forecast looks promising? Go outside. Wait. Let your eyes adjust. Sometimes the aurora starts as nothing more than a faint gray green arc. Then suddenly it moves. The sky changes. And everyone around you goes quiet. That’s the moment. 📸 HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH ICELAND Iceland is almost unfair for photography. But the biggest mistake is trying to photograph everything exactly like everyone else. Instead, look for layers. Foreground. Middle ground. Background. Put a person in the frame to show scale. Use roads to create leading lines. Photograph waterfalls vertically. Use reflections when the water is calm. Shoot through rocks or vegetation. And don’t be afraid of bad weather. Clouds can make Iceland look even more dramatic. For Northern Lights photography, a tripod is extremely useful because you’ll be working with longer exposures. Smartphone cameras can also capture impressive results in low light, especially when using night photography modes. (Visit Iceland) And remember: The photo is not always the memory. Sometimes put the camera down. Look up. You’re in Iceland. 🚗 THE ICELAND ROAD TRIP If you want maximum freedom, renting a car is one of the easiest ways to explore the country. But driving here isn’t like driving around a normal city. Weather can change quickly. Wind can be intense. Road conditions can change. Some routes may become difficult or inaccessible depending on conditions. The official SafeTravel service specifically recommends checking current weather and road conditions before heading out, because conditions can change rapidly. (Safetravel) Don’t blindly follow Google Maps if conditions are telling you not to. Your itinerary is not more important than your safety. If the weather forces you to change plans? Change the plans. Iceland will still be there. 🗺️ HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED? 4 DAYS Perfect for a first taste. Focus on: Reykjavík Golden Circle South Coast Waterfalls Black sand beach 7 DAYS A good introduction to the Ring Road. You can cover major highlights while moving between different regions. The official Ring Road guide recommends at least seven days for the full loop. (Visit Iceland) 10 TO 14 DAYS This is where Iceland becomes much more enjoyable. You have time for: South Coast Eastfjords North Iceland Snæfellsnes Golden Circle Glacier areas Hot springs Extra weather days And most importantly: You don’t have to rush every stop. 🎒 WHAT TO PACK Iceland can make you experience several types of weather in one day. So pack for flexibility. Waterproof jacket. Warm layers. Good walking shoes. Gloves. Hat. Extra socks. Power bank. Reusable water bottle. Swimsuit. Camera or phone. Tripod if you’re serious about night photography. And something many travelers underestimate: A waterproof layer for your backpack. Waterfall spray + Icelandic weather + camera equipment isn’t a great combination. ❤️ THE REAL REASON TO VISIT ICELAND Iceland isn’t memorable because of one famous waterfall. It’s memorable because everything keeps changing. You drive through green fields. Then volcanic rock. Then mountains. Then glaciers. Then black beaches. Then geothermal steam. Then snow. Then a tiny town. Then nothing but road and sky. And that’s the magic. You never quite know what the next turn is going to look like. 🌋 WOULD YOU RATHER CHASE WATERFALLS, GLACIERS, OR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? #Iceland #VisitIceland #IcelandTravel #IcelandRoadTrip #IcelandAdventure #IcelandPhotography #Reykjavik #GoldenCircle #SouthCoastIceland #Jokulsarlon #NorthernLights #RingRoad #TravelInspiration #BucketListTravel #EuropeTravel

Waterfalls, black sand beaches, glaciers, volcanic landscapes and roads that make you stop every 20 minutes just to stare. Iceland is one of those places where the journey between two attractions can be just as memorable as the attraction itself. You can leave a small town in the morning, drive past moss-covered lava fields, see waterfalls crashing beside the road, cross huge empty landscapes, and end the day watching the sunset over the ocean. If you’re planning your first Iceland road trip, save this route. 🌋 ICELAND ROAD TRIP: THE ULTIMATE ROUTE The classic first trip is the Ring Road, Iceland’s Route 1, which circles most of the country. You can technically drive around Iceland in a few days, but that doesn’t mean you should. For a comfortable first road trip, aim for 8 to 12 days. With fewer days, you’ll spend more time driving and less time actually experiencing the places you came for. A great route is: Reykjavík → Golden Circle → South Coast → Skaftafell → Jökulsárlón → East Iceland → North Iceland → Akureyri → Snæfellsnes → Reykjavík You can also extend the trip toward the Westfjords if you have more time. ⸻ 📍 DAY 1: REYKJAVÍK Start slowly. After arriving, spend your first day exploring Reykjavík rather than immediately beginning a huge driving day. Walk around the city center, visit Hallgrímskirkja, explore the harbor and check out Harpa Concert Hall. Reykjavík is compact, so you can see a lot without needing a complicated itinerary. It’s also a good place to stock up on road trip essentials before heading into the countryside. Pick up snacks, water, basic groceries and anything you might need for the next few days. 💡 Tip: Icelandic weather can change quickly, so don’t judge the entire trip by the weather in Reykjavík. ⸻ 📍 DAY 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE The Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s easiest day routes and a perfect introduction to the country. Start with Þingvellir National Park, a landscape filled with geological and historical significance. Then continue toward the geothermal area around Geysir. You’ll see steaming ground, bubbling geothermal features and Strokkur, the famous geyser that regularly erupts. Then comes Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. The huge amount of water rushing through the canyon makes it easy to understand why this is one of the country’s most famous stops. If you have extra time, consider adding a geothermal lagoon or another nearby attraction. ⸻ 📍 DAY 3: SOUTH COAST This is where the road trip starts feeling unreal. Drive east from Reykjavík along the South Coast and prepare to stop constantly. First up is Seljalandsfoss, famous for the walking path that allows visitors to see the waterfall from behind when conditions are suitable. Nearby, Skógafoss is another must-see. Unlike Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss hits the ground with a huge curtain of water, and you can climb the stairs beside it for a different perspective. Continue toward the coast and visit Reynisfjara, Iceland’s famous black sand beach. The combination of dark volcanic sand, dramatic cliffs and offshore sea stacks makes it one of the most recognizable landscapes in Iceland. ⚠️ Important: Reynisfjara has powerful sneaker waves. Stay well away from the water and never turn your back on the ocean. ⸻ 📍 DAY 4: VÍK + GLACIERS Continue east from Vík. The scenery gradually becomes more dramatic as glaciers and vast volcanic landscapes start appearing. Stop around Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park. There are several hiking options here, including the trail toward Svartifoss, a waterfall surrounded by distinctive basalt columns. Then continue toward one of the most spectacular places on the entire route: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Huge pieces of ice break away from the glacier and float through the lagoon before drifting toward the ocean. Across the road is Diamond Beach, where chunks of ice can sometimes be seen scattered across the black sand. The name makes sense when sunlight hits the ice. 📸 Photography tip: Don’t only photograph the ice. Look for reflections, people for scale and wide shots that include the surrounding glacier landscape. ⸻ 📍 DAY 5: EAST ICELAND This is where slowing down becomes important. East Iceland receives fewer visitors than the Golden Circle and South Coast, which makes the drive feel much quieter. The roads pass through mountains, fjords, small villages and enormous open landscapes. One of the best things about this section is that you don’t need an attraction every hour. Sometimes the best stop is simply a viewpoint beside the road. You can explore places around Höfn, Djúpivogur and the Eastfjords depending on your route. If you’re driving in summer, the long daylight hours make it much easier to enjoy these quieter areas without rushing. ⸻ 📍 DAY 6: NORTH ICELAND Continue toward the north. Lake Mývatn is one of the highlights of this region, surrounded by volcanic landscapes and geothermal features. Explore the pseudocraters, lava formations and geothermal areas around the lake. Nearby, you can visit Hverir, a geothermal landscape with steaming vents and colorful mineral-covered ground. Then continue toward Goðafoss, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. The horseshoe-shaped waterfall is particularly impressive when viewed from different sides. Spend the night around Akureyri or nearby. ⸻ 📍 DAY 7: AKUREYRI Akureyri is often called the capital of North Iceland. It’s much smaller than Reykjavík, but it makes a convenient base for exploring the north. Take some time to walk around town, visit the botanical garden and enjoy the views across the fjord. If you’re interested in wildlife, this region is also a popular base for whale watching. Depending on the season and conditions, boat tours may offer opportunities to see different species in the surrounding waters. 💡 Tip: Keep at least some flexibility in your schedule for weather-dependent activities. ⸻ 📍 DAY 8: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA Instead of driving straight back to Reykjavík, take a detour through the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This region is sometimes described as a miniature version of Iceland because it combines mountains, lava fields, beaches, cliffs, waterfalls and coastal scenery in one area. One of the most photographed places is Kirkjufell, the distinctive mountain near Grundarfjörður. You can also explore the coastline, small fishing villages and dramatic rock formations around the peninsula. This is another area where simply driving slowly and stopping whenever something catches your eye is part of the experience. ⸻ 📍 DAY 9: BACK TO REYKJAVÍK Return to Reykjavík and keep your final day flexible. You might want to revisit somewhere you skipped earlier, relax in a geothermal pool, explore more of the city or simply enjoy a slow final day. If your flight is the next morning, staying close to Reykjavík or the airport can also make your departure much easier. ⸻ 🚗 HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED? 5 to 6 days: Focus on Reykjavík, Golden Circle and South Coast. 7 to 8 days: Add more glacier and East Iceland stops. 9 to 12 days: Ideal for a relaxed Ring Road trip. 2 weeks+: Consider adding the Westfjords or spending more time hiking and exploring remote areas. Trying to see the entire country in five days is possible on paper. It just won’t feel like a vacation. ⸻ 🌦️ WHEN SHOULD YOU GO? Iceland changes dramatically throughout the year. Summer gives you long daylight hours and easier road access, making it ideal for a classic road trip. Autumn brings changing colors and shorter days, with a chance of seeing the Northern Lights as nights become darker. Winter creates a completely different Iceland, with snow-covered landscapes and Northern Lights opportunities, but driving conditions can be challenging. Spring sits between the seasons, with changing weather and landscapes beginning to wake up. The important thing is not choosing the “perfect” season. Choose the season that matches the experience you want. ⸻ 🛞 RENTAL CAR TIPS For a normal Ring Road trip in good conditions, a standard car can be enough. But Iceland’s weather is unpredictable. If you’re planning to drive on F roads, reach remote highland areas or travel during winter, you’ll need to check the specific vehicle and road requirements carefully. Before every long driving day: ✔️ Check the weather ✔️ Check road conditions ✔️ Check wind conditions ✔️ Check whether your planned roads are open ✔️ Fill up when convenient ✔️ Keep food and water in the car ✔️ Don’t underestimate driving time And never stop your car randomly in the middle of the road just because the view looks incredible. There will probably be another incredible view five minutes later. ⸻ 📱 USEFUL ICELAND ROAD TRIP HABITS Download offline maps before leaving areas with reliable signal. Keep your phone charged. Save your accommodation addresses. Check road conditions every morning. Don’t rely entirely on Google Maps estimated driving times because weather, road conditions and photo stops can dramatically change your schedule. And remember that Iceland’s weather can change faster than your itinerary. A sunny morning does not guarantee a sunny afternoon. ⸻ 📸 THE BEST PHOTO TIP Don’t photograph Iceland like you’re trying to prove you visited Iceland. Everyone takes the obvious waterfall shot. Instead, look for layers. A tiny person against a huge mountain. A road disappearing into the landscape. A car surrounded by volcanic terrain. A reflection in a glacier lagoon. A lone house beside a fjord. A waterfall framed by the surrounding landscape. Iceland is especially good at making humans look tiny. Use that. ⸻ 🥾 WHAT TO PACK Weatherproof outer layers are more important than packing a huge wardrobe. Bring: · Waterproof jacket · Warm layers · Comfortable waterproof shoes · Gloves and hat · Portable charger · Reusable water bottle · Small backpack · Sunglasses · Swimwear for geothermal pools · Snacks for long drives Even during warmer months, conditions can change quickly. ⸻ 🍲 FOOD ON THE ROAD Don’t expect every stretch of Route 1 to have restaurants every few minutes. That is why grocery shopping is part of the road trip strategy. Pick up breakfast items, sandwiches, fruit and snacks when you’re in larger towns. Then try local restaurants when you’re actually in towns with more options. And yes, Iceland is a great place to try seafood, lamb, dairy products and traditional Icelandic foods. You don’t need a fancy restaurant every night. Some of the best road trip meals are simply eaten while looking at a completely ridiculous landscape outside the window. ⸻ 🇮🇸 THE BIGGEST ICELAND ROAD TRIP MISTAKE Trying to turn every day into a checklist. Iceland looks small on a map. It doesn’t feel small when you’re driving through it. A waterfall might take 20 minutes. A viewpoint might turn into an hour. A short hike might become two hours because you keep stopping for photos. And sometimes you’ll see a landscape from the road and think: “Wait… what is THAT?” Pull over safely. Those unexpected moments are often the ones you’ll remember most. ⸻ 🗺️ SAVE THIS ROUTE Reykjavík ↓ Golden Circle ↓ South Coast ↓ Vík ↓ Skaftafell ↓ Jökulsárlón ↓ Eastfjords ↓ Lake Mývatn ↓ Goðafoss ↓ Akureyri ↓ Snæfellsnes ↓ Reykjavík Iceland isn’t really a destination where you “finish” sightseeing. It’s a country where the road itself becomes part of the experience. One minute you’re driving through a quiet valley. The next you’re looking at a glacier. Then a waterfall appears beside the road. Then the landscape changes again. That’s the magic of an Iceland road trip. 🇮🇸✨ 📌 Save this for your Iceland planning 🚗 Share it with your road trip partner 💬 If you had 10 days in Iceland, which stop would be your first priority? #iceland #icelandtravel #icelandroadtrip #visiticeland #icelandtrip #ringroad #reykjavik #southiceland #northiceland #icelandnature #travelguide #roadtrip #europetravel #traveltips #bucketlist

Akureyri, located in northern Iceland, is known as the country's "second capital" and is a premier destination for chasing the Northern Lights. The winter weather here is relatively stable, making it easy to drive, and the town exudes a peaceful, cozy atmosphere with plenty of lodging and dining options. With active auroras at night and well-maintained roads, it's a must-visit for self-driving enthusiasts. Itinerary Recommendation: The long nights and stable weather in the north provide ideal conditions for aurora viewing. We recommend heading out from the city center at dusk and driving along the coast of Hrisey Island or further north to remote areas like Goðafoss or the Eyjafjörður coastline to escape light pollution. The roads to major attractions are well-maintained and remain open in winter, making it perfect for first-timers driving in Iceland. Must-Visit Spots & Photo Ops: · Akureyrarkirkja (Akureyri Church): An iconic landmark and a great spot for city views. It looks especially magical when lit up at night. · Aurora Viewing Points: Eyjafjörður, the highlands surrounding the city, and roadside parks are popular spots to escape light pollution. · Listagil (Art Canyon): Soak in the artistic vibes of northern Iceland; explore the unique shops and cafes during the day to add some flair to your trip. · Goðafoss Waterfall: About a 30-minute drive from Akureyri, this famous northern attraction looks absolutely ethereal covered in winter snow. Travel Tips: · Download an aurora forecast app in advance to catch the peak activity window, usually between 9 PM and 1 AM. · We recommend renting a 4WD vehicle; roads can be snowy in winter, and snow chains add an extra layer of safety. · Dress warmly (heavy coat, gloves, hat, waterproof boots) as it gets extremely cold while waiting for the lights at night. · Supermarkets and cafes in the city have shorter hours, so it's best to stock up on food and plan your dinner early. · City lights can be strong, so drive to the outskirts (within a 25-minute drive) for the best chance to capture the spectacular "green lights." Important Notes: · Always check weather warnings for winter driving. If a blizzard is forecast, stay in the city and do not risk going out. · Local parking rules are strict; do not park illegally or occupy private land at night. · While typical aurora tours run from 8 PM to midnight, self-driving allows you to adjust your schedule flexibly without time pressure. Akureyri is the top choice for aurora hunting in the north, offering a tranquil environment and an authentic Nordic town experience—perfect for trips with friends or a romantic getaway!

Before driving into Troll Peninsula, I had already seen some of Iceland's most famous landscapes. Waterfalls. Glaciers. Volcanic fields. Black sand beaches. But the northern coastline gave me something completely different. Here, the road seemed to disappear between enormous mountains and the sea. Small fishing villages appeared around quiet fjords. Snow remained on the higher peaks. And there were long stretches where I could drive without seeing much more than mountains, ocean and the occasional Icelandic horse. Troll Peninsula wasn't a place I came to tick off a list. It was a place I wanted to keep driving through. 🚗 The Road Was the Main Attraction One of the things I quickly realized about Tröllaskagi was that the journey itself was part of the experience. The peninsula lies in North Iceland, between Skagafjörður and Eyjafjörður, and is known for its dramatic mountainous terrain and deep fjords. Instead of one major landmark dominating the landscape, the scenery kept changing as I drove. A mountain appeared around a bend. Then the road followed the coastline. Then another fjord opened in front of me. Then suddenly I was driving between steep mountain slopes. I found myself stopping much more often than planned. Not because I had reached a famous attraction. Simply because the view was too good to ignore. 🏔️ Mountains That Feel Almost Too Close The name Tröllaskagi is often translated as “Troll Peninsula.” Standing there, I could understand why. The mountains are enormous. Many slopes rise dramatically from the coast, and the higher peaks can remain snow-covered even when the lower landscape is green. From the road, they don't feel like distant scenery. They feel close. Sometimes almost overwhelming. I would look toward the mountain and think it was only a short distance away. Then I would realize how much higher it actually rose above the road. That scale was one of my favourite things about driving through the peninsula. 🌊 Then the Mountains Suddenly Meet the Sea The most beautiful part of the landscape, for me, was the contrast. On one side: Mountains. On the other: Ocean. And in between: A narrow Icelandic road. The coastline is full of deep fjords, and the road often follows their curves. This creates views that feel completely different from the wide open landscapes of South Iceland. Instead of looking across endless plains, I was constantly surrounded by layers. Mountain. Water. Village. Road. Sky. It made the drive feel much more intimate. 🐟 Siglufjörður: A Town Hidden Between the Mountains One of the places I especially enjoyed was Siglufjörður. The town sits at the end of a narrow fjord, surrounded by steep mountains. At first glance, it looks like a small northern fishing town. Colourful houses. Harbour. Boats. Mountains behind everything. But Siglufjörður has a fascinating history. It was once at the centre of Iceland's major herring industry, which brought enormous economic activity to the town during the early 20th century. Today, that history can be explored at the Herring Era Museum. I liked visiting because it gave me a completely different perspective on the town. Without the museum, I might have simply thought of Siglufjörður as a beautiful fishing village. After learning about its past, the harbour suddenly felt more meaningful. 🏘️ Walking Around Siglufjörður After driving through the mountains, walking around Siglufjörður felt surprisingly peaceful. The colourful buildings stood out against the darker mountains. Fishing boats moved gently in the harbour. The streets were quiet. And because the town is surrounded by mountains, I constantly had a dramatic background wherever I looked. I didn't need a long sightseeing list. I simply walked. That became a pattern throughout Troll Peninsula. Drive. Stop. Walk. Look around. Continue. It was a much slower way of experiencing Iceland. And I really enjoyed it. 🐟 Dalvík: Another Side of North Iceland Further along the peninsula, I also came across Dalvík, another small coastal town. Compared with the more famous tourist destinations in Iceland, places like Dalvík feel much quieter. There is a working harbour, colourful buildings and the enormous mountains of Tröllaskagi rising behind the town. The area is also associated with whale watching and other outdoor activities. But honestly, I didn't feel the need to fill every hour with activities. Sometimes I just wanted to stand near the water. Look at the mountains. Watch the boats. And enjoy the feeling of being somewhere far away from the usual tourist routes. 🐴 The Icelandic Countryside Between Villages One of the most enjoyable parts of driving around the peninsula was what happened between the towns. There were no major attractions. Just countryside. Icelandic horses in fields. Old farmhouses. Waterfalls appearing on mountain slopes. Small streams flowing toward the sea. And roads that seemed to stretch endlessly. This is where I felt the difference between visiting Iceland and actually travelling through Iceland. The famous attractions are impressive. But the landscapes between them are often what make the road trip memorable. 🌊 Ólafsfjörður: A Town Surrounded by Nature Another memorable stop was Ólafsfjörður, a small town sitting beside its own fjord. Like many settlements around Troll Peninsula, it feels completely surrounded by nature. The mountains rise immediately behind the buildings. The sea opens in front. And the town itself feels compact and peaceful. What I liked most was the scale. Everything felt close enough to explore on foot. But the landscape around it was enormous. It created that classic Icelandic contrast that I kept seeing throughout the peninsula: small human settlements surrounded by huge natural landscapes. 🛣️ The Tunnels Are Part of the Adventure Driving around Troll Peninsula also gave me a very different experience from other parts of Iceland. The mountainous geography means that tunnels play an important role in connecting the coastal towns. Driving into a tunnel and emerging on the other side of a mountain sometimes felt like entering another part of Iceland completely. One moment I was beside the ocean. A few minutes later, I emerged beside another fjord. The landscape changed so quickly that I often wanted to stop again. That made the route feel less like transportation and more like exploration. 🌦️ Weather Can Change Everything Troll Peninsula is also a place where weather can completely change the mood. Under blue skies, the mountains look sharp and enormous. When clouds arrive, the peaks can disappear into mist. Rain can make the road look darker. And sunlight breaking through the clouds can suddenly illuminate one mountain while leaving the others in shadow. I actually preferred these changing conditions to perfectly clear weather. They made the landscape feel alive. And they reminded me that Iceland is not a country where you can completely control your itinerary. Sometimes you simply have to work with the weather. 📸 The Kind of Place Where You Should Stop Often If you're driving around Tröllaskagi, my biggest advice is simple: Don't rush. You will probably have a plan. You may have a village you want to reach. You may have a hotel reservation. But leave some space in your schedule. Because you will probably want to stop. A mountain reflected in the sea. A waterfall beside the road. A quiet harbour. A horse standing in a field. A small village appearing between two mountains. These moments are not always marked on a map. But they may become the photographs you remember most. 🌅 When the Peninsula Became My Favourite Kind of Iceland By the time I had spent more time around Troll Peninsula, I realized something. This wasn't the Iceland of famous postcard attractions. It was the Iceland of roads and landscapes. The Iceland of fishing villages. The Iceland of mountains reflected in fjords. The Iceland of stopping the car simply because the scenery looked beautiful. And for a road trip, that was exactly what I wanted. 🧭 A Few Tips Before Driving Troll Peninsula 1. Give yourself extra time The distance may look manageable on a map, but you'll probably want to stop frequently. 2. Check road conditions Mountain weather can change quickly, especially outside summer. 3. Don't rely only on Google Maps Always check Iceland's official road and weather information before setting out. 4. Bring layers Wind near the fjords can make the temperature feel much colder. 5. Fill up when you can Small villages may have limited services compared with larger towns such as Akureyri. 6. Stay flexible If the weather suddenly changes, slowing down or changing your route can be a much better experience than trying to follow a strict schedule. 7. Spend time in the villages Don't treat Siglufjörður, Ólafsfjörður or Dalvík as places to simply drive through. Park the car. Walk around. Look at the harbour. That is where the character of the peninsula really comes through. ❤️ My Final Impression Before visiting Troll Peninsula, I thought the biggest attractions in Iceland would always be waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes. But some of my favourite memories came from simply driving. Driving beside the fjords. Driving underneath the mountains. Stopping in small fishing villages. Watching the weather move across the peaks. There was no single moment that defined the peninsula. Instead, it was the entire journey. Some places are about reaching a destination.
Troll Peninsula made me realize that sometimes, the road itself is the destination. 📍 Tröllaskagi Peninsula, North Iceland #TrollPeninsula #Trollaskagi #Tröllaskagi #Iceland #NorthIceland #IcelandTravel #IcelandRoadTrip #Siglufjordur #Olafsfjordur #Dalvik #IcelandFjords #IcelandPhotography #VisitIceland

Before visiting Goðafoss, I had already seen plenty of waterfalls in Iceland. Some were tall. Some were surrounded by black cliffs. Others were hidden beneath glaciers or tucked into dramatic valleys. So I wasn't sure what to expect from another waterfall. But when I finally stood in front of Goðafoss, I understood why it is one of the places I remembered most from North Iceland. It wasn't simply the size. It was the shape of the waterfall, the wide river rushing over the rocks, and the history connected to the place. And perhaps most of all, it was how easily I could experience it. 🚗 From Akureyri to Goðafoss I visited Goðafoss while exploring Akureyri and North Iceland. The journey itself was already beautiful. Leaving Akureyri, the landscape gradually opened up. There were mountains in the distance, wide valleys and long stretches of road where Iceland felt almost completely empty. Compared with some of the more crowded tourist areas in southern Iceland, North Iceland felt calmer. I didn't feel like I was constantly driving from one famous attraction to another. Then, after following the route along the Ring Road, I arrived near Goðafoss. It was surprisingly easy to reach. That was one of the things I liked immediately. You don't need to spend hours hiking through difficult terrain just to see it. From the nearby parking areas, the waterfall is only a short walk away. And then you hear it. The sound of the water. 💦 My First View of Goðafoss The first thing that surprised me was its width. I had expected a powerful waterfall. I hadn't expected such a broad curtain of water. The Skjálfandafljót river spreads across a horseshoe-shaped rocky area before dropping into the pool below. The water isn't simply falling in one narrow stream. It divides into several sections, creating a wide, constantly moving wall of white water. I stood there for a while without taking a photograph. The sound was louder than I expected. And because the waterfall is relatively open, I could walk around and see it from different angles. That made the experience feel more immersive. 🌊 The Water Has a Completely Different Character One of the things I noticed immediately was the colour. Depending on the light and weather, the water can appear turquoise, blue-grey or almost white as it crashes over the rocks. The surrounding dark volcanic rocks make the water stand out even more. I kept moving between viewpoints because every angle looked slightly different. From one side, the waterfall looked wide and symmetrical. From another, I could see the individual streams rushing over the rocks. And from a little farther away, the entire landscape came together. River. Waterfall. Cliffs. Sky. Mountains in the distance. It was one of those places where I took far more photographs than I expected. 👑 Why Is It Called the “Waterfall of the Gods”? The name Goðafoss translates roughly as “Waterfall of the Gods.” But the name isn't simply because the waterfall looks majestic. It is connected to an important story from Iceland's history. According to the traditional account, around the year 1000, Iceland's lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made a significant decision concerning the country's adoption of Christianity. The story says that after deciding that Iceland should officially adopt Christianity while maintaining certain compromises, he threw his pagan idols into the waterfall. That is how Goðafoss became associated with the name “Waterfall of the Gods.” Whether you come for the scenery or the history, knowing this story changes the way the waterfall feels. Suddenly, you're not just looking at water. You're standing in a place connected to a major turning point in Iceland's history. 📖 A Waterfall With a Story Behind It I found this part especially interesting because many natural attractions can be beautiful without having much historical context. Goðafoss has both. You can stand there and appreciate the geology and scenery. But you can also think about the people who lived here more than a thousand years ago. Iceland's landscape has always been closely connected to its history. The same rivers, mountains and valleys that we see today were already part of the lives of Icelanders centuries ago. Standing beside Goðafoss made that idea feel much more real. 📸 Don't Just Take the Classic Photo If you're visiting Goðafoss, I would recommend walking around rather than stopping at the first viewpoint. There are different viewing areas on both sides of the river. The perspective changes quite dramatically. One viewpoint gives you a wider composition. Another brings you closer to the rushing water. I also liked stepping back and including more of the surrounding landscape. The waterfall is impressive on its own, but the scale becomes more obvious when you include the river and cliffs. And if you're lucky with the light, you may even catch a rainbow in the mist. 🌦️ Icelandic Weather Made the Scene Better When I visited, the weather wasn't perfectly clear. At first, I thought that might make photography more difficult. But after watching the clouds move across the sky, I changed my mind. The darker clouds made the water look even more dramatic. Then the sunlight came through for a few minutes and completely changed the scene. That's something I learned during my Iceland trip: Perfect weather isn't always necessary for a memorable landscape. Sometimes the changing weather is what gives it character. 🏔️ Goðafoss Feels Different From Iceland's Bigger Waterfalls I had already seen waterfalls such as Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss in South Iceland. They each have their own personality. But Goðafoss felt different. It wasn't about standing beneath a towering waterfall. It wasn't about walking behind the water. Instead, the experience was about looking across a broad river and watching the water split across the rocks. It felt more open. More expansive. And because it is relatively easy to access, I could spend time simply walking around and enjoying the scenery rather than focusing on the hike. 🌿 The Landscape Around the Waterfall One thing I appreciated was that the waterfall wasn't isolated from its surroundings. The landscape around Goðafoss is very much part of the experience. The river continues beyond the falls. Low vegetation covers parts of the surrounding land. Mountains rise in the distance. And the open Icelandic sky makes everything feel larger. It reminded me that Iceland's famous landscapes are rarely just one object. A waterfall is never only a waterfall. It is the river, the rocks, the mountains, the weather and the light together. 🏙️ Why I Recommend Combining It With Akureyri If you're travelling through North Iceland, Akureyri makes a natural base for exploring Goðafoss. Akureyri itself has a completely different atmosphere from the waterfall. It is a small but lively town beside Eyjafjörður, with cafés, restaurants, shops and colourful streets. After spending time surrounded by waterfalls and volcanic landscapes, I enjoyed returning to town for a slower evening. Have a coffee. Walk around the centre. Look across the fjord. Then continue exploring the next morning. This combination worked well for me because it gave the trip some balance. Nature during the day. A small northern town in the evening. ☕ A Slower Side of North Iceland One of my favourite things about travelling around Akureyri was that it didn't feel like a place I needed to rush through. The town is surrounded by mountains and the fjord, so even ordinary walks have beautiful scenery. And after visiting Goðafoss, I found myself appreciating the quieter moments more. Iceland can easily become a checklist: Waterfall. Glacier. Beach. Volcano. Next destination. But North Iceland reminded me to slow down. Sometimes the best part of a road trip is the hour between attractions. 🚗 Tips for Visiting Goðafoss 1. Go early or later in the day The light can be beautiful, and visiting outside the busiest hours makes the experience more peaceful. 2. Walk to more than one viewpoint The waterfall looks different from different sides. 3. Bring a waterproof jacket Even when it isn't raining, spray from the waterfall can reach the viewing areas. 4. Wear proper shoes The paths and surrounding ground can become wet and slippery. 5. Check Icelandic road conditions Weather can change quickly, especially outside summer. 6. Combine it with Akureyri If you're travelling through North Iceland, staying in or around Akureyri makes it easy to explore Goðafoss without rushing. ❤️ My Final Impression I arrived at Goðafoss thinking I was simply going to see another Icelandic waterfall. I left feeling like I had visited a place where nature and history were connected. The water was powerful. The landscape was beautiful. But the story behind the name gave the waterfall another layer. More than a thousand years ago, people stood in this same landscape and made decisions that would shape Iceland's history. Today, I stood there with a camera in my hand, watching the same river continue to flow. That thought stayed with me long after I left. Some waterfalls are remembered for how high they are.
Goðafoss is remembered for the story, the landscape, and the feeling of standing beside it. 📍 Goðafoss, North Iceland #Goðafoss #Godafoss #Akureyri #NorthIceland #Iceland #IcelandTravel #IcelandRoadTrip #IcelandWaterfalls #WaterfallOfTheGods #IcelandPhotography

You only truly understand why people call this the place on Earth that most resembles another planet once you've been there. Glaciers, volcanoes, auroras, waterfalls, and black sand beaches all in one frame—every step is a shock of geological wonders, as if all the world's ultimate scenery were packed into one island nation. Precisely because the journey is long and the cost is high, many people treasure it in their memories after just one visit, making it a magical country that is hard to visit a second time✨ 📍Iceland ✨Must-visit planetary wonders ▫️Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach Basalt columns stand straight along the coast, and the ink-colored beach churns with white waves. On cloudy days, it feels like standing at the end of the world. The waves crash against the reefs with a roar, and the wind rushes in, carrying the scent of salt. Standing beneath the columns, the sense of human insignificance and the awe of nature are both fully realized. ▫️Gullfoss Falls A tiered waterfall cascades down from a height, the water shimmering with a golden luster in the sunlight, often refracting rainbows in the mist. Looking down from the observation deck, the churning water crashes into the valley floor with majestic momentum—this is the raw power of nature. ▫️Blue Ice Cave A winter-exclusive blue fantasy. The ice caves inside the glacier are like solid blocks of sapphire. When the sunlight filters in, even the air glows with a translucent blue light. Walking inside feels like breaking into an alien secret realm; every view is a unique, limited-time shock. ▫️Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Huge icebergs are scattered across the lake, like scattered diamonds. Take an amphibious boat to weave between the floating ice, watching the crystal-clear ice blocks drift toward the sea along the river, and time seems to slow down with them. ▫️Northern Lights A winter night's exclusive surprise, with green ribbons of light dancing wantonly in the night sky, reflecting off the glaciers and snow. The moment you see the aurora filling the sky with your own eyes, all the long waits and bone-chilling cold become meaningful. 🚗Classic way to play An 8-day, 7-night road trip around the island is the most classic way to experience it. Drive clockwise around the island without repeating scenery: Reykjavík → Golden Circle (Þingvellir National Park + Geysir + Gullfoss Falls) → South Coast Black Sand Beach → Glacier Lagoon → East Fjords → Akureyri in the north → Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the west → Return to Reykjavík Every stretch of road hides surprises, and you can stop to enjoy the scenery at any time. 💡Practical tips ▪️Best time to travel: November–March for auroras and blue ice caves; June–August for the midnight sun and meadow waterfalls. Each season has its own stunning beauty. ▪️For transportation, self-driving is the priority, as attractions are scattered and it offers the most freedom. In winter, be sure to choose a 4WD vehicle and pay attention to icy road conditions. ▪️Prices are on the high side. Book accommodation and car rentals 1–2 months in advance for better value. ▪️It is windy and cold. Even in summer, bring a windproof and waterproof jacket. In winter, prepare full-body thermal gear. ▪️The Blue Lagoon is a standard part of the itinerary. Soaking in the pale blue hot springs sweeps away all the fatigue of the journey.

🌌 บางทีแค่ได้ยืนกลางความมืด เงยหน้าขึ้นมองท้องฟ้า แล้วเห็นแสงสีเขียวค่อย ๆ 🗺️ Iceland From North to South These illustrated guides made me want to experience how different Iceland can feel beyond a single stop. From Akureyri and Reykjavík to the dramatic landscapes around Vík, each place seems to have its own rhythm. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📍 Place: Akureyri, Reykjavík and Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland. ✨ What it felt like: I loved the contrast here. Akureyri feels smaller and relaxed, Reykjavík brings more city energy, while Vík looks completely shaped by wild coastal nature and changing weather. 👀 What stood out: Akureyri caught my attention with its church, botanical garden, geothermal pool culture and snowy mountain setting. Reykjavík mixes striking architecture like Hallgrímskirkja with the old harbour, local pools and Icelandic food. Around Vík, the black beaches, sea stacks and puffins create a much wilder atmosphere. One detail connects all three: layers matter, because Icelandic weather can change quickly. 💡 Exclusive tip: I’d keep a waterproof outer layer accessible instead of buried in luggage. Around Vík especially, I’d also stay well back from the shoreline at Reynisfjara and never turn my attention away from the waves. ❤️ Personal feeling: This feels like a trip I’d enjoy slowly with my family—warm food, cold air, scenic drives and plenty of unexpected little moments between the famous stops. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ #Iceland #Akureyri #Reykjavik #Vik #IcelandTravel #SouthCoastIceland #FamilyTravel #TripMoments #travel2026#travel#citydaytours

Norway has Oslo and Bergen. But on the southwestern coast lies a town that feels like a hidden chapter of Norwegian history. Egersund is a small settlement of white wooden houses, narrow streets, and a fjord that opens to the North Sea. The porcelain factory made it famous. The sea made it rich. Here is how to explore this hidden Norwegian gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Old Town at Dawn: Wood and Water Egersund's old town is a maze of white wooden houses and narrow streets. By 9 AM, the town wakes. Come at 6:30 AM instead. The light is soft. The wood glows. You will walk through streets that have barely changed in two centuries, with only the sound of your footsteps and the distant cry of gulls. It feels like stepping into a Norwegian postcard. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Egersund. It shows you the quietest routes through the old town and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the harbor at sunrise, when the white houses reflect in the still water. 2. The Porcelain Factory: A Legacy in Clay Egersund is famous for its porcelain. The factory has been producing stoneware since 1847. The museum tells the story of the factory and its workers. The pieces are beautiful and functional. Come early. The museum is quiet, and the history is fascinating. Money Hack: The museum has a small entrance fee. Buy a combined ticket on Trip.com that includes the porcelain museum and the town museum. You save about 20%. The town museum tells the story of Egersund's maritime past. 3. The Coast: A Landscape of Stone and Sea The coast around Egersund is wild and beautiful. The rocks are smooth. The sea is clear. The most beautiful spot is the Eigerøy lighthouse, standing on a rocky island. Come in the afternoon. The light is golden, and the sea shimmers. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive boat tours. Drive or walk to the viewpoints. Check Trip.com for a "Egersund Coast Guide" that shows you the best spots and the quietest times to visit. The guide includes stops at the nearby beaches and the Viking burial mounds. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Coast Norwegian coastal food is fresh and simple. Try Fish Soup — creamy and rich, with local seafood. Order Klippfisk — dried and salted cod, a coastal specialty. And do not miss Krumkake — thin waffle cookies, best with whipped cream. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants on the waterfront. Walk into the town and find Egersund Fiskerestaurant or Café Kaien, where locals eat. The food is fresh, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a glass of local beer when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the old town. Look for something on Strandgata or near the harbor. You will sleep in a white wooden house with a view of the sea, the sound of waves at night, and the cry of gulls at dawn. The evenings are quiet, and the stars are bright. Conclusion: Egersund is not a place you rush through. It is a place you breathe in. It is a town of wood and sea, of porcelain and history. It is a place where the sea shaped everything. Norway is a country of dramatic beauty, but Egersund is its southwestern soul. Come and walk the old town at dawn. The fjord is waiting. #trip_com #Norway #Egersund #egersundtravel #NorwayHiddenGems #PorcelainFactory #CoastalTown #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #travelnorway #WoodenHouses #NorwegianCoast #HiddenScandinavia #FjordViews #MaritimeHeritage

North Iceland hits different, y’all! It’s sooo much more chill than the super touristy south—seriously, this region feels ancient, like it’s got centuries-old vibes. We took an epic road trip up here in September, and let me tell you, the adventure was beyond dreamy. 🚗💨 The weather? Perfection! The roads were wide open and totally stress-free, so you can just cruise and vibe out to your favorite playlist. Early fall colors are unreal in the North—the landscapes go all-out with golden leaves, lava fields, and those iconic volcanic hills. My FujiFilm literally didn’t get a break, every corner was a photo op! 📸🍂 You’ve got spots like Akureyri (the “Capital of North Iceland”), the mighty Goðafoss waterfall (location: Goðafoss, 645, Iceland; open 24/7), and the bubbling geothermal area at Hverir (location: Námaskarð, 660, Iceland; open 24/7—just follow the steamy vents!). And if you’re a fan of chill little villages, don’t miss Húsavík for its coastal charm. Honestly, if you crave wild, untouched views and way fewer IG crowds, the North is calling. I totally recommend everyone to explore this magical side of the island. Northern Iceland is a vibe you NEED to experience at least once! 🌋✨ #iceland #hidden #travel2026 #travel

Strolling through Iceland's second-largest city, Akureyri, you'll discover that this city offers more than just the majestic beauty of snowy mountains and the bay—it's also filled with heartwarming little romantic details. At night, the shopping street Hafnarstraeti is bathed in cozy lighting. Although the streets are quite empty and quiet enough to hear your own footsteps, a hot cup of coffee from Te & Kaffi on the corner will instantly chase the chill away. Standing at the end of the avenue is the Akureyrarkirkja, a towering cathedral that lights up with a golden glow at night. Its striking twin-tower design rising into the sky is truly magnificent. The most delightful surprise is the "love" radiating everywhere—whether it's a casual and cute "LOVE" custom license plate on a parked car, or the heart-shaped red lights that catch you off guard at intersections. They warm every traveler's heart in their own special way. Waking up the next morning to be greeted by a sky painted in a soft pink and purple dawn, perfectly reflected alongside the snowy mountains, will make you fall deeply in love with this gentle yet spectacular town. 📸 Photo Diary: Image 2 | Shopping Street at Night: Hafnarstraeti shopping street, with buildings adorned with warm lights, feeling peaceful and cozy. After whipping up a simple yet satisfying dinner at the guesthouse, our night itinerary in Akureyri was still going strong! We made a special trip to Brynja, a highly renowned century-old local ice cream parlor, to give it a try. What’s it like eating ice cream in the -3°C Icelandic night? The verdict: there's absolutely no need to rush, because it won't melt at all! The creamy milk flavor is incredibly rich; even though we were hunching our shoulders from the cold, we couldn't help but devour it bite by bite. On our way back, we swung by Glerárkirkja church. Illuminated against the pitch-black night sky, the church gives off a super futuristic vibe. Viewed straight on or from the side, its structure looks exactly like a rocket fueled up and ready for liftoff! Iceland's architectural designs never fail to amaze. 📸 Photo Diary: Pic 2 | Warm home-cooked dinner: A quick and simple homemade meal whipped up at the guesthouse. We still had a little way to go before reaching our stop for the night, Akureyri, so we didn't dare linger too long and hurried back on the road. Although we missed out on bright sunshine at our guide's secret spot—the mirror-like Lake Ljósavatn—its calm waters still beautifully reflected the mountain silhouettes. The scenery along the way was absolutely captivating: a lone cabin standing in the shadow of majestic snow-capped peaks, sweeping lines of snow-covered mountain ranges, and bizarre cliffs that looked as if they had been sliced perfectly flat by a god's blade. But the most breathtaking part was the break of dawn. A delicate, rosy pink-and-purple hue painted the horizon, gently bathing the pristine, snow-draped peaks in a glow so beautiful it literally took our breath away. As we rounded a bend, the scattered lights and rolling foothills on the opposite shore came into view—finally, Akureyri was right before our eyes! 📸 Photo Diary: Pics 2-3 | Our guide's secret spot, Lake Ljósavatn: Lacking a bit of sun, but making up for it with crisp, tranquil reflections on the lake and the quiet silhouettes of travelers.
