Amiens is the capital and most populous commune of the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Located on the banks of the Somme River, Amiens is an important industrial and commercial center in northern France. The famous author Jules Verne lived in Amiens, where he wrote many of his world-renowned masterpieces. During the Middle Ages, the city expanded rapidly and the famous Amiens Cathedral, a World Heritage Site, was built. In 2018, Amiens was designated an International Wetland City.

The cliffs here are 80 m flint-and-chalk, less white than Étretat but more lonely. Bois de Cise has a hotel-restaurant (€18 lunch plate, card ok) and a tiny beach accessed by 200 steps. I walked back along the top edge through cow pastures—signposted but unrailed, so keep kids leashed. Mistake: I wore sneakers after rain; the clay path near Bois de Cise slips badly. Another mistake: comparing it to Étretat—Ault is raw Picardy, not postcard Normandy; judge it on silence, not arches. Worth it? Yes if you want the Channel cliff without the bus queues; no if you need cafés every 500 m. Question: is a free unstaffed woodland cliff better than a €10 parking Étretat experience, or does the lack of facilities hurt?
