Amiens travel guide✨ Key highlights Located on the banks of the Somme River in northern France, Amiens is home to Amiens Cathedral, a World Heritage site and a pinnacle of Gothic architecture. It features intricate, exquisite carvings and a vast, awe-inspiring interior. The Saint-Leu district features winding canals lined with colorful half-timbered houses, creating a charming atmosphere of small bridges and flowing water. The quirky sculptures along the canals are also a unique local photo spot. The old town streets retain many red-brick buildings, which look especially atmospheric at sunset. Transportation guide🚞 You can reach Amiens train station in about 1 hour by high-speed train from Paris. All major attractions in the old town are within walking distance. The city is small, so there is no need to rely heavily on public transportation. Itinerary📅 We recommend a 1–1.5 days trip. Spend the morning visiting Amiens Cathedral to admire the facade carvings and the interior dome. In the afternoon, stroll through the Saint-Leu canal district, walk along the waterways for photos, and explore the old town alleys. In the evening, relax at a riverside café and soak in the city's slow pace. Food recommendations🥐 Be sure to try the local macarons; Amiens macarons have a long history and a unique flavor. Also, try the French crêpes and local beer. There are many affordable small restaurants along the river where you can enjoy northern French home-style cooking. Practical tips💡 Admission to the cathedral is free, but you need to buy a separate ticket to climb the tower. The light in the canal area is soft in the evening, making it perfect for photos. The city is not crowded and has a relaxed pace, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Amiens is the capital and most populous commune of the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Located on the banks of the Somme River, Amiens is an important industrial and commercial center in northern France. The famous author Jules Verne lived in Amiens, where he wrote many of his world-renowned masterpieces. During the Middle Ages, the city expanded rapidly and the famous Amiens Cathedral, a World Heritage Site, was built. In 2018, Amiens was designated an International Wetland City.

There are at least 2 Jules Verne museums in France. This one is located in Amiens, where Jules Verne spent the longest. The museum is based in his old home. The house is lovely and gives you a good idea about the writer and all his books. It has plenty of explanations in French and English. A good visit to the museum will take you an hour or two. You can combine a visit to the museum with one to the magnificent Amiens Cathedral (walking distance). May I also suggest a visit to Brasserie Jules and the restaurant called l'Edito, both close to the train station. Of course, a visit to Amiens must include a visit to Les Hortillonages: canals that were developed initially to grow food, but are now mostly gardens. You can travel by boat to discover them.

Wander through the soaring interiors of Amiens Cathedral, a masterpiece of Western architecture at 30 Place Notre Dame. As a fellow architecture lover, I found my heart stolen by its intricate religious ornaments and tranquil atmosphere—a safe haven right in the city. The sunlight through stained glass adds a magical touch, perfect for soaking in the serene vibes. Start your visit by admiring the facade and entrance carvings. Inside, head straight for the nave with its stunning vaults. Don’t miss the statue and commemorative plaque (my favorite Insta-worthy angle is beneath the diffused light—captures that peaceful feel!). Explore the chapels and side aisles for more Gothic wonders, and linger near the altar for calming moments away from crowds. Must-do: Pause and listen to the echoes—this spot’s vibe is unmatched for quiet reflection. Snap close-ups of ornate religious details; they’re as photogenic as they are historic. For a safe, peaceful experience, avoid rushing and stick to well-lit areas, especially in less busy hours. Visiting tips: Check the opening hours before you go—timing varies by season, usually open from 14:00, closed on some Mondays and holidays. Arrive early to enjoy sunlit interiors and fewer visitors. Dress respectfully, as it’s a sacred site—bring a light jacket if it’s cool inside. Precautions: Some days are closed (especially Mondays and certain holidays), so double-check dates. Look out for uneven stone floors and low lighting in some chapels. #Amiens #Cathedral #GothicArchitecture #CulturalHeritage #TravelFrance

When visiting Paris, don’t miss the nearby Chartres Cathedral! As an architecture enthusiast, I was truly amazed 🤩 🔥 Subtitle: The Pinnacle of Gothic Architecture ✨ Chartres Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres) is absolutely a textbook masterpiece of Gothic architecture! Although it’s not the earliest Gothic building, it was the first to achieve full maturity, delivering an outstanding effect 💯 🤔 Why is it considered legendary? Because it truly pushed Gothic architecture to the extreme❗ 🔼 Pioneered the three-level facade design (arcade + high side windows + colorful rose window) 🔼 Flying buttresses were not just added later but integrated as core structures 🔼 Perfect balance of interior height and stability From then on, Gothic architecture had a standard answer 📜 This is the real textbook Later famous cathedrals like: ✔ Reims Cathedral ✔ Amiens Cathedral ✔ Cologne Cathedral All copied its template, becoming industry benchmarks 👑 🎨 From Experimentation to Artistic Expression While early Gothic architecture was still struggling with structural stability, Chartres was already playing with creative elements 🥰 Its stained glass, narrative imagery, and spatial rhythm are super confident Truly a mature period masterpiece 📸 Photo tips: 🌟 Be sure to capture the rose window; it’s stunning when sunlight shines through 🌟 Find the right angle to photograph the complete flying buttress structure 🌟 Try low-angle shots of the interior structure 🌟 Wearing dark clothes for silhouette shots gives a special vibe Whenever you see these magnificent statues, you can’t help but marvel at the ancient creators’ genius 🚀 This cathedral is definitely worth a special visit!

🏰 Ladies! The Chartres Cathedral near Paris, France is absolutely amazing! Although it’s not the earliest Gothic building, it is the first fully mature masterpiece! 🤩 ⸻ ✨ In a nutshell: If the Abbey of Saint-Denis is the starting point of Gothic architecture, and Notre-Dame de Paris is the prototype, then Chartres Cathedral is the first truly mature and definitive pinnacle of Gothic architecture! It’s a divine existence in architectural history! 💫 ⸻ 🔍 What makes this cathedral so outstanding? 👉【Textbook-Level Hardcore Design】 ✔️ Pioneered the three-tiered façade (arcade | high side windows | colorful rose window) ✔️ Flying buttresses became a true core structure (not added later) ✔️ Interior space height, proportions, and stability reached an unprecedented balance It’s basically the ultimate case study for architecture students! 📚 👉【Replicable Gothic Template】 Famous Gothic cathedrals like Reims Cathedral, Amiens Cathedral, and Cologne Cathedral all copied Chartres’ model! Lovely architecture in Amiens l! ❤️

#100waysoftravel This restaurant and bar was a place I often came too while studying in Amiens. The food and drinks are always reasonably priced and they have a good Happy Hour. Plus they are always playing great music. Pros · Great prices · Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating · Good Atmosphere · Friendly staff · Great music Cons · Food is average, but could expect that because of the price. It is still decent though Definitely recommend, especially if you are looking for a couple of drinks! #bar #trip #travel #thingstodo

#100waysoftravel In my opinion, and I have seen a ton of France, the best cathedral in all of France and one of the best in all of Europe. It’s worth trying to make a trip to Amiens to see it. Plus you get to see what a real town in France actually looks like! Pros: · It’s beauty and size · you can occasionally catch a sermon happening · It is never crowded · The history is pretty stunning · They have events close to the cathedral during the holidays Cons: · Not much else to do in the area · Can be difficult to hire a guide if you want to know more of the history Summary: Simply put, it’s beautiful. If you happen to be passing close to Amiens on your trip in France, do everything you can to stop by and see it! #churches #trip

Amiens is a wonderful relatively unknown destination less than 2 hours away from Paris (by train or car). Amiens is a charming city known for its impressive Gothic cathedral, the largest in France. Wander through the quaint Saint-Leu district, with its colorful houses and canals, or take a boat ride through the Hortillonnages, a unique floating garden. You can also visit the Jules Verne House, where the famous writer lived. With its rich history, lovely streets, and peaceful green spaces, Amiens is a perfect spot for a relaxed and enjoyable visit. Definitely recommend for a day trip, to relax and chill from bustling Paris 💆😎 #traveldiaries

I wasnt expecting such a good archelogical collection too from a regional museum. This is a museum with many things and not just paintings. It happens to be the main museum in both picardy and amiens. There are artefacts, wooden sculptures, and Egyptian items. Depending on your interest, it's very easy to spend two plus hours here. While it is one of the finest collections in France. The only thing is that there is a lack of information in english. Luckily for me, I was with someone who explained most of the things to me. When in Amiens, this place is definitely worth a stop. It's a fine insight into the history of the region too. #francetrip

#summerdestinations My visit to the Jules Verne House in Amiens, France, was a captivating experience! The entrance fee was €8, which felt like a steal for such an immersive dive into the life of the famous author. 🏛️ The house is wonderfully preserved and offers a fascinating glimpse into Verne's life and works, with personal artifacts and period decor that transport you back in time. Located in the heart of Amiens, it's also close to the stunning Notre-Dame Cathedral and the scenic canals. 📚🚤 A must-see for literature enthusiasts and history buffs alike! #trip #JulesVerneHouse #Amiens #LiteraryHistory #TravelInspiration #ExploreFrance

#myhiddengems I am into medival destinations and with over 60 medival monuments scattered all across the city of Amiens. This destination offers spectacle of rich heritage and Gothic influenced architecture. While the biggest draw for tourists tends to be the Gothic cathedral. This is France’s largest gothic Cathedral and the second largest in Northern Europe. At 140 metres long and 70 metres wide you could fit two Notre Dame de Paris inside, with space to spare. Definitely worth a few hours for the gothic lovers. And if i remember correctly. I think i oaid about 6 euros for the entry. But there is more to Amiens, beyond the cathedral. Based on my time there, allow me to share a few pointers. I have a memory fo a nice light show in the evening called Chroma. Though I was told it only happened during mid November till Christmas markets. It was free and spectacular. The next day I walked to the Picardy museum. While the art collection is nice. This 19th century building itself is stunning. That was followed with a visit to the house of the famous author Jules Verne (of around the world in 80 days' fame. Apparently he had married a local and settled down here. Other than that you have the Jules vernes circus, numerous unesco heritage sites, the quaint and beautiful streets of Saint Leu, great local cuisine and depending on your interest, several tours to take. #myhiddengems #100waysoftravel #gothic #vivelafrance #amiens #solotrip #europe #summergetaway #singapore

Amiens Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in France, and when I first laid eyes on it, I realized I had underestimated just how big this 'largest' really was! Surrounding Environment: The cathedral can be seen from many directions in the city, but what's more distinctive is that the area around the cathedral still retains historical residences from various eras, especially along the river, it's just like traveling back to the Middle Ages. Because the cathedral is a stone building with significant cultural importance, it is easy to be properly preserved, but the residential buildings around the cathedral have changed with the times. Amiens is a rare city that allows us to see the contrast between the cathedral and the residences from the era when the cathedral was built. Facade: The stunning facade of Amiens Cathedral, with its sculpture groups and flying buttresses, is overwhelming. The ranks of saints on the portal arches are four circles more than Notre-Dame de Paris and three more than Reims Cathedral, truly deserving of being the largest in France, with a focus on density. The king's gallery at Notre-Dame was also damaged during the French Revolution, but in Amiens, you can see an original and complete version. Similarly experiencing the Reformation, comparatively speaking, French Gothic cathedrals, from the inside out, are more original and it's evident from the evolution of architectural and decorative styles that the influence of the Reformation weakens the further south you go. Art and architecture here clearly become authentic records and evidence of history, these are the living history beyond the books. Architectural Structure: The complexity of the exterior flying buttresses of Gothic cathedrals is directly proportional to the height and spatial area of the interior voids. This is a technical determinant that often makes Gothic cathedrals tall, achieving the exceptionally grand characteristic of the interior space. For photographers, the grandness of the cathedral's interior space means that you cannot express its height with a wide-angle lens, but can only capture its depth with a telephoto lens. There are many cathedrals, but there are few that make me feel so insignificant, as if I were in a dark and dense forest. As a pinnacle of medieval Gothic architecture, it truly takes the flying buttresses and interior ribbed vaults to the extreme, such a vast space, yet supported by only four rows of columns, with less obstruction inside and a wider view. This astonishing grandeur can be seen from the contrast between people and the building in photos. Relics: A mountain is not renowned for its height but for the presence of immortals; prestigious cathedrals must have some relics. The relics of Amiens Cathedral are quite impressive; it's the skull of Saint John, which was taken by the French from Byzantium during the Fourth Crusade, the very head that was chopped off at the behest of Salome by King Herod. The authenticity of these events is hard to verify today, but generally, cathedrals still confidently claim that what they have is the real deal.

#Europe #SmallCityTravel #ParisSuburbsTravel A train ride of about an hour? A perfect day trip Amiens Highly recommended There's also the sea A thousand-year-old cathedral and a quiet place This place is visited by many travelers from all over the world!! I visited a month ago~I miss it so much

Amiens Cathedral is the largest church in France (even bigger than Notre-Dame de Paris), a Gothic church, and was listed as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1981. Amiens is a relatively unpopular city in France with few tourists and very quiet. Due to the cancellation of our flight back to Brussels due to strikes, we changed to Beauvais Airport in northern Paris, which is more than 100 kilometers away. Because we didn't want to take a detour and didn't want to buy expensive train tickets to Paris (which are particularly expensive if purchased before departure), we chose to take the 601 bus from the airport (which can be searched on SNCF but not on Google Maps). Go to Amiens, then from Amiens to Lille, Kortrik, and finally back to Gent. Passing through Amiens, we had an hour's layover, so we visited the largest cathedral in France (we didn't even know about the city of Amiens before). The towering Gothic spires are visible from afar, even before reaching the cathedral. From afar, it can be seen that due to the bad weather, the appearance did not achieve the desired effect in the photos, but the moment we pushed open the door of the church, we were all stunned. Blue and pink lights shone on the dome of the church one after another, as if entering a dark fairy tale world.
