I tried "Gatatan" in Ashibetsu, Hokkaido—a local specialty that leaves you guessing what kind of dish it is just from the name. Gatatan is a thick, Chinese-style soup packed with a variety of ingredients, including vegetables, meat, seafood, wild plants, and dumplings. It's said to have originated after WWII when a repatriate from former Manchuria settled in Ashibetsu and started serving it at his Chinese restaurant, inspired by a home-style dish from Northeast China called "Gada Tang." During the town's coal-mining boom, it became Ashibetsu's soul food, loved by coal miners as a hearty dish that warms the body to the core and keeps the stomach full. In 2025, it was officially recognized as a "100-Year Food" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. This time, I visited "Shin Horaiken" to taste this famous Gatatan. We ordered these two dishes: ① Gatatan Ramen The classic Gatatan ramen features a light salt broth loaded with veggies and seafood. It's known for its fluffy eggs and extra-thick consistency. ② BLACK DIAMOND This is the one I had! It's a rich, soy sauce-based Gatatan ramen made with authentic brewed soy sauce, pork back fat, onions, black garlic, and ginger. The black pieces inside are chewy dumplings made to look like coal, which used to be called the "Black Diamond" of the Ashibetsu coal mines. At first, I thought they were fish cakes, but they were absolutely delicious! And above all, I absolutely love the rich, gooey thickness of the broth! The thick soup coats the noodles perfectly, making it incredibly tasty! Thanks to its thickness, the soup doesn't cool down easily, so it's great that you can enjoy it piping hot down to the very last bite. It was right up my alley—a bowl I'd definitely want to eat again next time I visit Ashibetsu. Inside the restaurant, there were unique, quirky characters inspired by Gatatan on display, and I couldn't help but snap a photo! After our meal, we headed to "Sandandaki" (Three-Tier Waterfall), also located in Ashibetsu. It's a stunning spot with a powerful, multi-tiered cascading waterfall and beautiful natural scenery decorating the rocky cliffs. This summer, we opted for a road trip in Hokkaido to take our time and soak in the summer vibes of Furano. Day 1 started with picking up our rental car at New Chitose Airport and driving straight to Tomamu. The scenic drive was absolutely gorgeous. That evening, we checked into Petit Hotel Gracey Tomamu and kicked off our adventure with an authentic local dinner at Shinta Izakaya. Early on Day 2, we headed up to the Tomamu Unkai Terrace and were lucky enough to catch the breathtaking sea of clouds. Afterward, we explored Furano's Hokuseiyama Lavender Garden, Hinode Park, and Lavender East. Compared to the bustling Farm Tomita, these three spots were much less crowded, making it a breeze to snap photos of the endless lavender fields—highly recommended! We grabbed lunch at À Bientôt Furano, enjoyed dinner at Kiyomizu, and took a stroll through Ningle Terrace. Despite the rain, the fairy-tale-like night views were simply unforgettable. On Day 3, we hit the famous Farm Tomita bright and early at 9 AM to beat the crowds, and treated ourselves to some juicy melon at Tomita Melon House. After a drive along the Roller Coaster Road, we arrived at Shikisai-no-Oka, which looked like a vibrant, colorful patchwork quilt—as if God had tipped over a paint palette. We wrapped up our sightseeing at the Blue Pond and Shirahige Waterfall, taking in some of Hokkaido's most iconic natural wonders all in one day. Lunch was fantastic Wagyu beef at Gio Wagyu Yakiniku Hinabi, and dinner was a heartwarming cheese fondue at Kazamidori, adding so much joy to our trip. Day 4 was all about slowing down. We kicked things off with fruit picking at Ohashi Cherry Farm, then hit up the Anpanman Shop and the kids’ favorite, Furano Jam Garden. After visiting the Rokugo Viewing Platform and Furano Cheese Factory, we made our way to the Chitose Aquarium. We wrapped up the day with a delicious feast of fresh Hokkaido seafood at Kintaro Sushi. Before heading out on Day 5, we just had to stop by Doremo LeTAO for breakfast and dessert. Then it was time to return our car to Nissan and reluctantly make our way to New Chitose Airport, bringing our perfect trip to a close. The biggest takeaway from this vacation is how much freedom and comfort a road trip offers, especially when traveling with kids. No rushing for trains or dragging luggage around—plus, you can pull over anytime to snap a photo when you spot a beautiful view. The place we're going is Ohashi Cherry Farm. We're traveling by private car. We left Sapporo early in the morning, because the journey takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. We opted for the public field entrance fee, which is about 3600 yen. During the month we went, there were two varieties of cherries available for picking. You can eat as much as you want while picking. If you pick too much, you can take it home. The staff will weigh it and put it in a box for you. The price is based on weight, but it's not too expensive. Before entering the farm, a staff member will explain how to pick the cherries. The staff were very nice. If you're worried about whether your parents, aunts, or uncles can walk up the hill, there are some areas that aren't too steep. To finish off and beat the heat, they have soft-serve ice cream 🍦 topped with plums – it was delicious! If you're planning to go, check their website carefully. The harvesting schedule varies each year, season, and variety. Cherry picking starts at the end of July. And it's recommended to book your tickets in advance for convenience. Additionally, there is a stamp collection activity in the orchard; once you collect all the stamps, you can exchange them for a small box of cherries to take home. Cherry picking🍒 at Ohashi Cherry Farm in the starry town of Ashibetsu, near Furano, Hokkaido, is unlimited in time😳 What's more, they grow 1,500 cherries of 60 varieties, so you can compare the taste of several varieties that are ripe on the day😆 There are many relatively low trees, so you can easily reach the ripe red cherries without using a ladder🤭 You can also enjoy high-quality varieties, so it's very satisfying👍 #EasternJapan
