Hey everyone! I just got back from an absolutely amazing, yet pretty exhausting trip to Oman. To be completely honest... wow, it's a stunningly beautiful country, especially if you're a history buff like me who loves ancient forts and gorgeous architecture, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart – or light wallets! Honestly, it felt even more expensive than back home in Aarhus sometimes, and that's saying a lot. As you know, I'm all about exploring old ruins and historical sites, and Oman absolutely did not disappoint on that front! The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat was simply breathtaking. The white marble and the giant chandelier... I was completely speechless. But just a heads-up if you're going: women need to be fully covered (long sleeves, long pants, and a headscarf), and they close as early as 11 AM, so you have to get there bright and early. And then there was Nizwa! The old Friday market and the Nizwa Fort felt like stepping straight into a living history museum. We got up super early to check out the raw, unfiltered livestock market with goats and cattle – it was just so authentic and completely unlike anything you'd experience back home. We stayed at the Nizwa Heritage Inn, which is a beautifully restored old Omani house. I highly recommend it if you want to soak in the historical vibes, and it was honestly worth every penny. But now for the slightly rougher stuff... because there are a few things you really need to be prepared for. First off: public transportation is practically non-existent. You absolutely HAVE to rent a car, and it really needs to be a proper 4WD (four-wheel drive). When we drove up to Jebel Akhdar – the Green Mountain with its incredible rose terraces and crisp mountain air – there was literally a police checkpoint at the bottom of the mountain checking the vehicles. If you don't have a 4WD, you'll get turned right around! The driving situation was actually pretty stressful. We easily spent 4 hours a day on the road, and the routes through the mountains and the desert really require your full concentration. In the Wahiba Sands desert, we had to let some air out of the tires so we wouldn't get stuck in the soft, hot sand. Phew, my heart rate was definitely up there! If you get stuck out there and need to call a tow truck, it costs an arm and a leg. And generally speaking, Oman is just an incredibly pricey destination. Hotels are on the very high end, and a standard dinner at a nice restaurant will take a serious bite out of your budget. Having said that, you absolutely have to try their local dish, 'Shuwa' – it's lamb slow-roasted in an underground sand oven with tons of spices until the meat just falls off the bone. We also drank a ton of Arabic coffee paired with fresh dates. The coffee is very bitter and spiced with cardamom, but paired with the super sweet dates, it honestly tastes like heaven! If you're thinking about making the trip, make sure to go between November and March. We had weather around 68-77°F (20-25°C), which was absolutely perfect for walking around checking out ruins. If you go in the summer, temps easily hit 113°F (45°C), and you just can't stand being outside for more than 10 minutes at a time. All in all? I'm super thrilled that I got to experience the rich culture and the incredible forts, but honestly, I don't think I'll be going back. The endless driving was just too exhausting, and it was simply too expensive in the long run. But if you have the budget and the guts to brave those wild mountain roads, it's definitely the trip of a lifetime! 🌟
