For our Lofoten trip, we decided to fly into Svolvær, one of the main towns in the Lofoten Islands. It turned out to be such a good decision because the town is convenient, easy to start from, and much prettier than I expected. Svolvær is often known as the gateway to Lofoten. It has an airport, a harbour, restaurants, shops, hotels, and everything you need before starting a road trip. For us, it was the perfect place to land, pick up a rental car, buy some groceries, and then begin exploring the rest of Lofoten. We rented our car from Lofoten Rental Car, and it was very convenient because they could bring the car to meet us at the airport. After landing, we picked up the car, stopped by a supermarket to buy food and essentials, and then started driving around Lofoten. What I really liked about Svolvær is that it feels like a mix of modern convenience and local charm. It is not just a place to pass through. The harbour area is beautiful, the mountain views are dramatic, and the town has a calm local atmosphere that makes you feel like you have really arrived in Northern Norway. At the end of our Lofoten trip, we returned the car at the rental company’s office in Svolvær, then simply walked to the harbour to continue our journey by boat to Tromsø. This made the whole route feel very smooth and easy. If you’re planning a Lofoten road trip, I would really recommend starting in Svolvær. It is practical, scenic, and a great first impression of the Lofoten Islands. Svolvær🐟 One little detail I found interesting is the meaning behind the name Svolvær itself. The name comes from Old Norse: “svalr”, meaning chilly or cool, and “vær”, meaning a fishing village. So the name can be loosely understood as something like “a chilly fishing village.” And honestly, it fits the town so well. Svolvær sits by the cold northern sea, surrounded by mountains, boats, and harbour life. Even today, although the town has become more modern and convenient, the name still reflects its old identity as a coastal fishing town in the Arctic.

Although the sky in Tromsø was already too bright by mid-April to spot the Northern Lights, heading to the Hopen area in Lofoten—with even less light pollution—allowed us to finally witness a spectacular aurora outburst with our own eyes! We never expected that a faint glimmer of green could suddenly erupt into something so brilliant. Truly an unforgettable experience of a lifetime! By mid-April here in the Arctic Circle, it becomes quite hard to get long, dark nights. However, since the sky isn't completely bright yet, paired with clear weather, you still have a chance to capture the moment the aurora explodes! You have to wait until midnight, and dawn starts breaking around 2 AM, giving you a tight two-hour window. Around 11 PM, long after sunset, faint auroras will gradually appear in the sky. Auroral activity usually peaks just before midnight, so we recommend heading out to wait by 10:30 PM. Temperatures are still quite low, so remember to bring plenty of heavy layers, a thermos with hot water, and a camera tripod! If it rains, be prepared to reschedule—safety comes first! 📸 Photography Tips Remember to set your camera to long exposure and high ISO in advance; dedicating these settings to the aurora makes it much easier to capture the delicate colors.
