Before going, I mostly knew it for its beaches, but there’s so much more to see. Tirana is colorful and full of energy, while places like Berat and Gjirokastër feel completely different, with old stone streets and beautiful historic buildings. But my favorite part is definitely the Albanian Riviera. The water around Ksamil is ridiculously clear, and in some places it almost feels like you’re somewhere in Greece just without the same prices. Food, accommodation, and transportation are generally quite affordable, so it’s an easy place to enjoy without spending too much. 2. North Macedonia North Macedonia feels a little underrated, which is probably part of the reason I liked it. Lake Ohrid was easily the highlight for me. The combination of the lake, mountains, old churches, and quiet streets makes it the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Sitting by the water in the evening with nowhere I needed to rush to was probably one of my favorite moments there. It’s also noticeably cheaper than many of the more popular destinations in Europe, especially when it comes to local food and accommodation. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that has a completely different atmosphere from the typical European destinations. Sarajevo has such an interesting mix of cultures and history, and walking around the old town almost feels like being somewhere between Europe and the Middle East. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous Old Bridge and beautiful old streets along the river. What I loved most was how much you could experience without needing a huge budget. The food is good, portions are generous, and everyday travel costs can still be surprisingly reasonable. Final Thoughts Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina might not be the first countries people think about when planning a European trip, but that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They’re affordable, beautiful, and still have that feeling of discovering somewhere a little less obvious. Albania surprised me in the best way. It’s a country with a very unique atmosphere and a fascinating mix of influences. First, the architecture and infrastructure reflect different historical periods. You can see European-style buildings, remnants of the communist era, and even traces of the Ottoman past. Cities like Berat show this especially well. There is also a strong Italian cultural influence. Mornings often start with a cappuccino and breakfast at a café, while evenings are about aperitivo — it’s very common to see people enjoying an Aperol Spritz in bars and restaurants. Some people describe Albania as a “strict Muslim country,” but from my experience this is misleading. Yes, many people are Muslim and you can see beautiful mosques, and the country historically had connections to the Ottoman Empire. However, Albania today feels very open and diverse rather than strict. What impressed me most was the hospitality. People were incredibly kind. During my stay, small gestures happened often — for example, a hotel administrator simply gave me a Pepsi for free, and once I was told I didn’t need to pay for breakfast. These moments really show how welcoming locals can be. Another great thing is that English is widely spoken, especially in Tirana. Even people from the older generation often spoke English, so communication was very easy. In smaller towns fewer people may speak it, but in the capital it’s rarely a problem. When to visit Albania? I traveled there in winter, so my trip was mostly about walking tours and exploring cities. If you want to swim or enjoy the beaches of the Albanian Riviera, summer is the best time. However, summers in Tirana can be very hot (sometimes 30–40°C). So if your goal is to explore cities, walk around, and visit historical places, spring or autumn might be the most comfortable seasons. But if you want a beach vacation with beautiful landscapes and swimming, summer in southern Albania is perfect. Overall, Albania is a country with warm people, interesting history, and beautiful places — and it definitely deserves more attention from travelers.

8:50 AM took a taxi to the City of a Thousand Windows: Berat. p1 It was already 12:30 PM, so we found the 9th ranked restaurant in this small town. The taste was average, nothing special. p2 At 2 PM, continued checking in, climbed up the cobblestone streets of Berat Old Town until finally reaching the highest point, Berat Castle. p3 Then headed to the Onufri Museum. This guy was a local painter, specializing in iconography. p4 Next, went to the Holy Trinity Church, but it was closed. Nearby is the site of the Red Mosque, with only a large chimney remaining. I guess it used to be the minaret? p5 A short walk straight ahead leads to the viewing platform, where from the foot of the mountain you can see the high-flying Eagle Flag, overlooking the entire Berat town, exactly like a drone’s perspective. p6 Arrived in Durrës after 7 PM, the sea was no longer visible, the Archaeological Museum was closed, and the Venetian Tower of the castle had closed in the afternoon, so we could only take exterior photos. It’s round and looks like a gas tank. A few hundred meters ahead is the ancient Roman amphitheater, but it was pitch dark and hard to see, and it felt like ruins with no reconstruction. p7 Stayed in Durrës for only 10 minutes before driving back to the hotel in the capital. Albania🇦🇱 Xhamia Mbret The mosque was originally closed when we arrived. Just as we were about to leave, an elder came up and asked us if we wanted to go in for a visit. He then opened the door and let us in. He briefly explained that this was a king's mosque. It has been around for more than 500 years, and its square appearance is different from what we have seen before. The interior is made of bright colors. I think the most special thing is that the small arch in the middle looks very similar to Thai design, which is what I saw in the mosque. There are also some archaeological and historical relics around that can be visited. Albania 🇦🇱 Xhamia Mbret mosque we arrived when it was closed. As we were about to leave, a friendly man offered to let us in. He explained that this mosque, built for a king, has been standing for over 500 years. Its square exterior design sets it apart from what we've seen before. Inside, vibrant colors adorn the space, and a small archway in the center caught my attention, reminiscent of Thai design. Surrounding the mosque, there are also archaeological and historical artifacts to explore.

For anyone planning a trip to the Balkans, Albania is an absolute MUST. My itinerary focused on two main areas: the ancient city of Berat and the natural wonders around Sarandë. Both exceeded all my expectations. Part 1: The 'City of a Thousand Windows' - Berat We started in Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique Ottoman architecture. The view from the castle is breathtaking (see the high mountains in the distance, much like the peaks we saw earlier on our drive through the country, like in image_0.png). Part 2: The Hypnotic Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) This was the absolute highlight of the trip for me! The Blue Eye is a water spring and natural phenomenon that you have to see to believe. A small, rustic viewing platform (which you can just see) lets you get right above the source. Divers have gone down over 50 meters, and the pressure is so intense the water just pumps out. The surrounding jungle-like foliage is incredibly dense, creating a cool microclimate (the forest density here reminds me of the lushness we saw in image_1.png on our way south).

Berat Castle was already one of my favorite places in the city, but staying until sunset made the climb even more worthwhile. The fortress sits high above Berat, giving you a wide view over the city, the Osum River and the mountains surrounding the valley. During the day it's impressive, but as the sun starts dropping, the whole landscape changes. The mountains become softer silhouettes, the rooftops below catch the last warm light and the sky slowly turns from gold to orange and pink. What makes this sunset different is the setting. Berat Castle isn't simply an empty viewpoint - people still live inside its walls, and you're surrounded by old stone houses, churches, narrow lanes and centuries of history while watching the light disappear. Then the city below starts lighting up. For me, that's the perfect kind of sunset spot: somewhere worth visiting anyway that becomes even better during the last hour of the day.
