Berat travel guide and discussion

Europe has plenty of famous destinations, but some of my favorite trips were to countries that rarely get the same attention as France, Italy, or Switzerland. These three genuinely surprised me. Slovenia was my first pick. I loved wandering around Ljubljana, with its riverside cafés and relaxed atmosphere, but the real highlight was Lake Bled. I also made time for Lake Bohinj, which felt quieter and more natural. Then came Albania. Tirana was lively and unexpectedly fun, but I enjoyed the coast even more. Berat, with its white Ottoman-era houses climbing the hillside, was one of the most memorable stops of the trip. My third choice is Montenegro. I spent time exploring Kotor, where dramatic mountains surround the bay, then drove along the coast toward Budva. The scenery alone made the journey worthwhile. What I liked about these countries was the sense of discovery. I didn’t feel like I was following a checklist of famous European attractions. There were quiet streets, local restaurants, scenic drives, and plenty of moments where I simply stopped and looked around. If you want Europe with fewer crowds and a little more adventure, I’d start here. #slovenia #montenegrotravel #albania

#mytravelwrap Walking through Berat Castle felt like stepping into a quiet piece of Albania’s past. The winding stone lanes, old houses, historic walls, and peaceful surroundings create an atmosphere that is hard to find in modern cities. From the higher points of the castle, the view over Berat is especially beautiful, with the Osum River and surrounding hills creating a wonderful backdrop. I loved taking my time here, exploring the corners of the old settlement and enjoying the feeling of being surrounded by centuries of history. It is the kind of place where every turn seems to offer another beautiful view. Would you explore Berat Castle on your next trip to Albania? #mytravelwrap #BeratCastle #Berat #Albania #AlbaniaTravel #ExploreAlbania #TravelMemories #TravelMoments #ScenicViews #HistoricPlaces #TravelPhotography #EuropeanTravel #HiddenGems #BeautifulDestinations

Just got back from an incredible journey through Albania, and I can't wait to share the highlights! This country is an absolute gem, blending historical wonders with breathtaking natural beauty. For anyone planning a trip to the Balkans, Albania is an absolute MUST. My itinerary focused on two main areas: the ancient city of Berat and the natural wonders around Sarandë. Both exceeded all my expectations. Part 1: The 'City of a Thousand Windows' - Berat We started in Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique Ottoman architecture. Walking through the narrow, cobbled streets is like stepping back in time.Part 1: The 'City of a Thousand Windows' - Berat We started in Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique Ottoman architecture. Walking through the narrow, cobbled streets is like stepping back in time. Image 1: Postcard from Berat This wide shot captures the signature look of Berat. See how the white, stone houses with their endless windows cascade down the hillside? It's even more spectacular in person. The Berat Castle sits atop the hill, watching over the city and the Osum River below. The architecture is incredibly well-preserved. The view from the castle is breathtaking (see the high mountains in the distance, much like the peaks we saw earlier on our drive through the country, like in image_0.png). The cobbled streets within the castle walls are charming. Image 2: Exploring the Citadel Here’s a shot from inside the Berat Citadel (Kalaja). The narrow passageways are paved with worn stone, and old houses are built right into the fortifications. The air was warm, and the whole place felt serene and ancient. I loved finding these quiet corners. After the history of Berat, we headed south towards Sarandë for some nature. Part 2: The Hypnotic Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) This was the absolute highlight of the trip for me! The Blue Eye is a water spring and natural phenomenon that you have to see to believe. Image 3: The Hypnotic Blue Eye Photos do not do this justice, but this one comes close. The water is impossibly clear and vibrant blue in the center, fading to bright turquoise. It’s surrounded by lush, dense forest, creating a perfect hidden oasis.Image 4: The Scale and the Source To give you an idea of the depth, here’s a shot looking deeper down into the spring from a slightly higher vantage point. A small, rustic viewing platform (which you can just see) lets you get right above the source. Divers have gone down over 50 meters, and the pressure is so intense the water just pumps out. The surrounding jungle-like foliage is incredibly dense, creating a cool microclimate (the forest density here reminds me of the lushness we saw in image_1.png on our way south).

Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit), perched high above the charming streets of Berat, is honestly next-level iconic. It’s not just some dusty old fortress—you’re literally stepping into a living, breathing piece of history where real families still go about their day inside these ancient walls. Like, imagine grabbing snacks from a local shop with epic 13th-century stone towers all around. 🤩 Why’s this castle such a must-see? First off, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and the true heart of Berat, often called “the city of a thousand windows.” From the top, get ready for panoramic views that are seriously Instagrammable—those classic white Ottoman houses and the Osum River winding below are *chef’s kiss*. The best part? Berat Castle isn’t just open to tourists, it’s open to LIFE. Around 100 families still live here, so you get those real Albania vibes as you wander cute cobblestone alleys, see laundry out to dry, and pass teens heading home from school. Planning your adventure? Here’s the scoop: · Address: Rruga Kala, Berat 5001, Albania · Opening Hours: Open daily, usually from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (but you can wander a bit after hours—residents are always around!) · Travel tip: Wear comfy shoes—those steep stone paths are no joke, but totally worth it! And check out local cafés at the top for killer views and strong Albanian espresso. Trust, whether you’re a history buff, family traveler, or just chasing vibes, Berat Castle brings all the storybook energy you could want. Don’t miss it! #beratcastle #beratunesco #beratoldtown #berathistoriccentre #beratalbania

Starting March 2023, Chinese ordinary passport holders can enter Albania visa-free and stay for 90 days within 180 days. Just bring your passport and fly. The moment you land in Tirana, the Balkan sunshine hits your face with an unpolished ruggedness. Tirana: where color meets ruins The capital Tirana lacks the refinement of other major European cities but has a wild, thriving vitality. Pigeons and national flags fly together over Skanderbeg Square. Nearby, the Et'hem Bey Mosque’s murals are exquisitely detailed, almost otherworldly. Take the cable car up Mount Dajti to see the whole city spread below, with the Adriatic Sea faintly visible. Bunk'Art, a museum converted from a communist-era bunker, feels like stepping into a frozen piece of history. Berat: the city of a thousand windows Two hours by car to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hundreds of white Ottoman houses stack along the hillside, each window facing the valley, making the mountain look like it’s watching you. People still live inside the castle. Clothes dry beside Byzantine churches, where medieval life blends seamlessly with the everyday. Saranda: the blue of the Ionian Sea Heading south to Saranda, the most stunning stretch of Albania’s coastline. The water is so clear you can see the patterns on the stones below. Cafes line the seaside promenade, and the sunset turns the silhouette of Corfu Island golden red. We recommend visiting Lekuresi Castle for a panoramic sunset view. Be sure to arrive before dusk. Blue Eye: the earth’s pupil About a 25-minute drive from Saranda through oak woods, the Blue Eye springs into view. A roughly 20-meter-wide spring with a deep cobalt center that fades to turquoise at the edges, like the earth’s open eye. The water is over 50 meters deep, and divers have yet to reach the bottom. The water temperature stays around 10°C year-round. Swimming is officially prohibited, but just standing on the viewing platform is breathtaking enough. Butrint: time in ruins 22 kilometers from Saranda, Butrint is a UNESCO site. Ancient Greek theaters, Roman baths, and Byzantine walls lie scattered in dense forest. Walking here feels like traveling through 3,000 years. Moss-covered stone columns stand under the shade, cicadas and wind alternate in sound. History here isn’t a specimen; it’s alive. Visa-free, affordable, uncrowded, stunning—Albania is one of those places you’ll regret not visiting sooner.

Berat Castle was already one of my favorite places in the city, but staying until sunset made the climb even more worthwhile. The fortress sits high above Berat, giving you a wide view over the city, the Osum River and the mountains surrounding the valley. During the day it's impressive, but as the sun starts dropping, the whole landscape changes. The mountains become softer silhouettes, the rooftops below catch the last warm light and the sky slowly turns from gold to orange and pink. What makes this sunset different is the setting. Berat Castle isn't simply an empty viewpoint - people still live inside its walls, and you're surrounded by old stone houses, churches, narrow lanes and centuries of history while watching the light disappear. Then the city below starts lighting up. For me, that's the perfect kind of sunset spot: somewhere worth visiting anyway that becomes even better during the last hour of the day. Would you rather watch sunset from a beach or from an old fortress high above a historic city? #Berat #Albania #BeratCastle #AlbaniaTravel #Balkans #SunsetViews #sunsetplaces

#kindnessontheroad One of my favorite travel memories from Berat Castle wasn't just the incredible views or the centuries-old stone streets—it was the kindness I experienced from the local people. While wandering through the castle's narrow lanes, I stopped for a moment to admire the scenery. A friendly local noticed I seemed unsure about which path led to the best viewpoint and warmly pointed me in the right direction with a smile. That simple gesture completely changed my experience. Instead of feeling like a visitor, I felt genuinely welcomed. Later, another shop owner greeted me warmly and patiently shared a few stories about the castle and its history. Those conversations reminded me that the best part of traveling is often the people you meet along the way. Travel isn't only about famous landmarks or beautiful photos. It's about the moments of kindness that stay with you long after the journey ends. A smile, helpful directions, or a friendly conversation may seem small, but they can turn an ordinary visit into an unforgettable memory. Berat Castle gave me more than stunning views—it showed me how simple kindness can connect people from different cultures and make every journey more meaningful. Have you ever experienced an unexpected act of kindness while traveling that made your trip unforgettable? #KindnessOnTheRoad #BeratCastle #Berat #Albania #TravelKindness #TravelStories #ResponsibleTravel #TravelMemories #ExploreAlbania #CulturalConnections #MeaningfulTravel

#kindnessontheroad In Berat, known as the "City of a Thousand Windows," the hillsides are carpeted with olive groves that have stood for centuries. While hiking the trail up to the Berat Castle (Kalaja), I wandered off the path and found myself in a grove dominated by a massive, gnarled olive tree—likely over a thousand years old. An elderly Albanian woman in a traditional black dress was harvesting olives using a small wooden rake. She looked up, smiled, and offered me a handful of the freshly picked fruit. They were bitter, as fresh olives are, but she mimed eating them with bread and salt. She then pulled out a small flask of local olive oil—golden green and peppery—and drizzled it onto a chunk of crusty bread for me. We communicated via gestures: she showed me how to tell if an olive is ripe (dark purple, slightly soft) and warned me not to pick from trees marked with white paint, as those were reserved for specific families. She also mentioned that the best time to buy olive oil in Berat is during the "Kremte" festival in November, where you can taste dozens of varieties for free. Her generosity wasn't just about the food; it was about sharing the legacy of her land. I later learned that Albania is one of the world's oldest olive oil producers, yet it remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism. Have you ever tasted something so fresh it changed your perception of a staple food?

Europe has a reputation for being expensive, but honestly, that really depends on where you go. Some of my favorite trips have been in countries where I didn’t have to constantly think about how much I was spending. Here are three affordable European countries that I think are genuinely worth visiting. 1. Albania Albania surprised me more than I expected. Before going, I mostly knew it for its beaches, but there’s so much more to see. Tirana is colorful and full of energy, while places like Berat and Gjirokastër feel completely different, with old stone streets and beautiful historic buildings. But my favorite part is definitely the Albanian Riviera. The water around Ksamil is ridiculously clear, and in some places it almost feels like you’re somewhere in Greece just without the same prices. Food, accommodation, and transportation are generally quite affordable, so it’s an easy place to enjoy without spending too much. 2. North Macedonia North Macedonia feels a little underrated, which is probably part of the reason I liked it. Lake Ohrid was easily the highlight for me. The combination of the lake, mountains, old churches, and quiet streets makes it the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Sitting by the water in the evening with nowhere I needed to rush to was probably one of my favorite moments there. It’s also noticeably cheaper than many of the more popular destinations in Europe, especially when it comes to local food and accommodation. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that has a completely different atmosphere from the typical European destinations. Sarajevo has such an interesting mix of cultures and history, and walking around the old town almost feels like being somewhere between Europe and the Middle East. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous Old Bridge and beautiful old streets along the river. What I loved most was how much you could experience without needing a huge budget. The food is good, portions are generous, and everyday travel costs can still be surprisingly reasonable. Final Thoughts Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina might not be the first countries people think about when planning a European trip, but that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They’re affordable, beautiful, and still have that feeling of discovering somewhere a little less obvious. And sometimes, those are the trips I end up remembering the most. #albania #northmacedonia #bosniaandherzegovina

#localrules Berat is one of Albania's most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage cities, famous for its white Ottoman houses climbing the hillside and its peaceful historic atmosphere. Walking through the narrow cobblestone streets felt like stepping back in time, and I quickly realized that respecting local customs is just as important as enjoying the views. Many of the traditional houses are still private homes, so it's important not to enter courtyards or take close-up photos of residents without asking for permission. While exploring the old neighborhoods and Berat Castle, stay on the marked paths and avoid climbing on historic walls to help preserve this remarkable heritage. If you visit local churches or mosques, dress modestly and keep your voice low to respect worshippers. One thing I appreciated most was how clean and peaceful the city felt. Carry your litter with you, respect quiet residential areas, and support local businesses by buying handmade crafts or enjoying traditional Albanian food. Following these simple local rules made my visit more enjoyable and helped me experience Berat with greater respect for its history and community. What local custom do you always try to follow when visiting a historic town? #LocalRules #Berat #Albania #UNESCO #HistoricTown #TravelAlbania #ResponsibleTravel #RespectLocalCulture #Heritage #TravelTips #ExploreAlbania

Found a discount on flights to Albania and booked on a whim. Turns out—a 3k budget really is enough for a week, with seafood every day. Highlights first, all the way through👇 Saranda Blue Eye Spring: The water glows a blue-green, like a gem fallen into the forest. Step in barefoot, and the coolness hits your heart. Ksamil Beach: Jelly-like sea with a glassy texture. Rent a sun umbrella for 15 and lounge all afternoon watching the sea. Berat, the city of a thousand windows: White houses cover the hills, windows packed tightly. Watching the sunset from the castle, the world slows down. Gjirokastër stone city: Ottoman stone houses. Climb the rooftops to see a sea of red tiles. Handmade silver jewelry is cheap and delicate. Tirana pyramid: An abandoned museum turned into a big slope where young people slide down—wild and romantic. How to spend 7 days? Day 1 Tirana: See the pyramid, drink a 2-euro espresso from the street. Day 2 Berat: Stay in an old stone house, listen to the landlord’s family stories. Day 3–4 Saranda: Blue Eye + Ksamil, soak in the sea for two days. Day 5 Gjirokastër: Wander the alleys, buy handmade copperware. Day 6 Back to Tirana to restock, visit the local market. Day 7 Buy honey and olive oil, then fly out. What’s cheap and tasty? Byrek pies—1.5 euros each, spinach and cheese filling that’s piping hot. Tavë Kosi—baked lamb with rice, rich in yogurt flavor. By the sea, order grilled sea bass with tomato salad, about 70 RMB per person to eat until full. A few practical tips Visa-free, just use a blank passport. Don’t count on card payments, bring extra euros to exchange for lek. Buses are cheap, but Furgon (minivans) are better for mountain roads. Summer is scorching, so use sunscreen well. Cover your arms before entering mosques. Before it becomes the next Greece, go now.

If you want to experience the true soul, history, and dramatic landscapes of Albania, this ultimate route taking you through Mount Sari Salltik, Kruja, and Berat is an absolute must-visit itinerary. From holy mountain peaks to Ottoman-era trading steps and a UNESCO-protected hillside town, this journey captures the very best of Albanian culture. ⛰️ Mount Sari Salltik (Kruja) Perched high above the clouds at nearly 1,176 meters, this sacred mountain offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Balkans. At the peak, you'll find the Bektashi Sufi cave shrine, a place steeped in local legends and deep spirituality. How to get there: Located right above the town of Kruja. You can drive up the winding, scenic asphalt road, or for the adventurous, take the steep hiking trail from the town center. What to do: Stand at the viewing platforms for a sweeping look over Kruja Castle and the Adriatic Sea, and visit the historical cave shrine. 🛍️ Kruja’s Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër) Step back in time into one of the oldest operational markets in Albania, dating back over 400 years to the Ottoman period. This beautifully restored wooden market connects the modern town directly to the castle walls. How to get there: Located in the heart of Kruja, an easy 45-minute drive or direct bus ride from Tirana. What to do: Walk along the cobblestone pathways and shop for authentic handmade Albanian crafts, antique silver, traditional kilim rugs, and unique souvenirs. Don't forget to chat with the local artisans who are keeping centuries-old traditions alive! 🏰 Berat: The City of a Thousand Windows A UNESCO World Heritage site, Berat is one of Albania’s oldest and most beautiful architectural treasures, famously split by the Osum River into two historic neighborhoods: Mangalem and Gorica. How to get there: Located about 2 hours south of Tirana/Kruja. Frequent buses and minivans (furgons) run daily between Tirana and Berat. What to do: Marvel at the iconic white Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside. Climb up to the massive, still-inhabited Berat Castle (Kala) for sunset, explore the Onufri Iconographic Museum inside, and cross the beautiful Gorica Bridge for a classic photo of the "stacked windows." #AlbaniaTravel #BeratUNESCO #KrujaOldBazaar #SariSalltik #ExploreAlbania

Albania surprised me in the best way. It’s a country with a very unique atmosphere and a fascinating mix of influences. First, the architecture and infrastructure reflect different historical periods. You can see European-style buildings, remnants of the communist era, and even traces of the Ottoman past. Cities like Berat show this especially well. There is also a strong Italian cultural influence. Mornings often start with a cappuccino and breakfast at a café, while evenings are about aperitivo — it’s very common to see people enjoying an Aperol Spritz in bars and restaurants. Some people describe Albania as a “strict Muslim country,” but from my experience this is misleading. Yes, many people are Muslim and you can see beautiful mosques, and the country historically had connections to the Ottoman Empire. However, Albania today feels very open and diverse rather than strict. What impressed me most was the hospitality. People were incredibly kind. During my stay, small gestures happened often — for example, a hotel administrator simply gave me a Pepsi for free, and once I was told I didn’t need to pay for breakfast. These moments really show how welcoming locals can be. Another great thing is that English is widely spoken, especially in Tirana. Even people from the older generation often spoke English, so communication was very easy. In smaller towns fewer people may speak it, but in the capital it’s rarely a problem. When to visit Albania? I traveled there in winter, so my trip was mostly about walking tours and exploring cities. If you want to swim or enjoy the beaches of the Albanian Riviera, summer is the best time. However, summers in Tirana can be very hot (sometimes 30–40°C). So if your goal is to explore cities, walk around, and visit historical places, spring or autumn might be the most comfortable seasons. But if you want a beach vacation with beautiful landscapes and swimming, summer in southern Albania is perfect. Overall, Albania is a country with warm people, interesting history, and beautiful places — and it definitely deserves more attention from travelers.

8:50 AM took a taxi to the City of a Thousand Windows: Berat. p1 It was already 12:30 PM, so we found the 9th ranked restaurant in this small town. The taste was average, nothing special. p2 At 2 PM, continued checking in, climbed up the cobblestone streets of Berat Old Town until finally reaching the highest point, Berat Castle. p3 Then headed to the Onufri Museum. This guy was a local painter, specializing in iconography. p4 Next, went to the Holy Trinity Church, but it was closed. Nearby is the site of the Red Mosque, with only a large chimney remaining. I guess it used to be the minaret? p5 A short walk straight ahead leads to the viewing platform, where from the foot of the mountain you can see the high-flying Eagle Flag, overlooking the entire Berat town, exactly like a drone’s perspective. p6 Arrived in Durrës after 7 PM, the sea was no longer visible, the Archaeological Museum was closed, and the Venetian Tower of the castle had closed in the afternoon, so we could only take exterior photos. It’s round and looks like a gas tank. A few hundred meters ahead is the ancient Roman amphitheater, but it was pitch dark and hard to see, and it felt like ruins with no reconstruction. p7 Stayed in Durrës for only 10 minutes before driving back to the hotel in the capital. Dinner was at the 7th ranked barbecue restaurant, with a mixed platter. p8

Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "City of a Thousand Windows," attracts visitors from around the globe every year. The city is divided into three main areas: Kala District on the hill where the castle is located, Mangalem District at the foot of the hill, and Gorica District across the Osum River. Most attractions are concentrated here. It is recommended to stay in Berat for two days and one night to fully immerse yourself in the charm of this captivating city.

Albania🇦🇱 Xhamia Mbret The mosque was originally closed when we arrived. Just as we were about to leave, an elder came up and asked us if we wanted to go in for a visit. He then opened the door and let us in. He briefly explained that this was a king's mosque. It has been around for more than 500 years, and its square appearance is different from what we have seen before. The interior is made of bright colors. I think the most special thing is that the small arch in the middle looks very similar to Thai design, which is what I saw in the mosque. There are also some archaeological and historical relics around that can be visited. Albania 🇦🇱 Xhamia Mbret mosque we arrived when it was closed. As we were about to leave, a friendly man offered to let us in. He explained that this mosque, built for a king, has been standing for over 500 years. Its square exterior design sets it apart from what we've seen before. Inside, vibrant colors adorn the space, and a small archway in the center caught my attention, reminiscent of Thai design. Surrounding the mosque, there are also archaeological and historical artifacts to explore.

Berat is a highland city in south-central Albania. It has a history of 2,500 years. The most special thing is the style of multi-window houses built on the mountain, extending out of the mountain city scenery of thousands of households, so it is known as the "City of a Thousand Windows" (The city of a thousand windows) The castle is located on the top of the mountain with a good view and overlooks the entire new district of Berat and the ancient city surrounded by the Osum River. #TravelCoolExperience#Photography Guide for Attractions

#tripaway Berat, "the city of one on one windows", remains one of the strongest riots for the tourism of history, art and culture in Albania. Due to its special historical and cultural values, Berat was declared a "museum city" in 1961, and since 2008 it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city of Berat continues to remain one of the most favorite destinations for foreign tourists, not to mention domestic ones. The fact that the city of Berat is already part of UNESCO, but also the special cultural and historical values that this area carries over the years, have attracted more and more the attention of tourists to visit. Berat harmoniously combines western and eastern culture and best proves the tradition of religious harmony in the country. Only 90 minutes away from Tirana, Berat can offer delicious food, free accommodation, hospitality and history. The neighborhood within the castle walls is still inhabited. If you walk here, do not be surprised to find yourself in someone's yard thinking it is a church (about 40 churches are thought to have existed inside the castle). In spring and summer the aroma of chamomile spreads throughout the castle neighborhood. A picnic under the shade of pine trees and the landscape of Gorica would be a good way to relax, after walking on the steep cobbled streets. Onufri Museum The castle has traditionally been an Orthodox neighborhood, but very few churches have survived. The largest church is the "Sleeping of St. Mary", where the Onufri Museum is located. It dates from 1797 and is built on the existing foundations of a church of the century. X. The works of Onufri are exhibited here. #visitalbania #tripaway

#外游 Berat, Albania is a city of a thousand eyes. Looking up the mountain from the city, the rows of large windows really look like eyes, which is very interesting! Walking into the narrow alleys on the mountain of the city of a thousand eyes, some of them are very steep. It happened to have just rained when we walked down, and the ground was slippery. It was really difficult to walk. We were afraid of slipping. The kind residents took the initiative to demonstrate how to use small steps to avoid slipping. #外游

Hidden bunkers. Ancient ruins buried in the forest. A spring so blue it looks unreal. Stone cities clinging to mountainsides. For decades, Albania was one of the most closed-off countries in the world, and even now it feels like Europe’s last great secret. That’s exactly what makes it so magical. In one week, you can wander a capital full of colour and Cold War mysteries, sleep in UNESCO towns that look frozen in time, and swim in turquoise water that rivals Greece at a fraction of the price. Here’s how to do it. Route: Tirana → Berat → Albanian Riviera → Ksamil → Gjirokastër → Tirana Best time to go: May to June or September to October, for warm weather without the summer crowds Getting around: Rent a car. Buses exist, but a car gives you the freedom to stop at hidden beaches and mountain viewpoints. Day 1: Tirana, the Colourful Capital Start in Tirana, a city that’s reinvented itself with bright painted buildings, buzzing cafés and a fascinating, slightly eerie past. Morning: Walk around Skanderbeg Square, the city’s heart, then visit the Et’hem Bey Mosque with its delicate frescoes. Afternoon: Step underground at Bunk’Art, a huge Cold War bunker turned museum. Its tunnels and rooms tell the story of Albania’s years of isolation, and it’s one of the most memorable museums in the Balkans. Evening: Head to Blloku, once a neighbourhood reserved for the communist elite, now packed with bars and restaurants. Tip: Ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car up Mount Dajti for sunset views over the city. Day 2: Berat, the Town of a Thousand Windows Drive about two hours south to Berat, a UNESCO-listed town where white Ottoman houses stack up the hillside, their windows staring out over the river. Morning: Explore the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, linked by an old stone bridge. Afternoon: Climb to Berat Castle, where people still live inside the ancient walls. Wander its lanes, Byzantine churches and viewpoints. Evening: Try local wine and traditional dishes in a family-run restaurant. Tip: Stay overnight in a restored Ottoman guesthouse for the full experience. Day 3: Over the Llogara Pass to the Riviera Today is all about the drive. Head south via Vlorë and climb the dramatic Llogara Pass, where pine forests suddenly give way to jaw-dropping views of the Ionian Sea far below. Afternoon: Descend to Dhërmi or Himarë, two of the Riviera’s prettiest seaside villages. Evening: Fresh seafood dinner by the water. Tip: Stop at the viewpoints on the pass. The view is one of the most spectacular in Europe. Day 4: Beach Hopping on the Albanian Riviera Spend a slow day doing what the Riviera does best: crystal-clear water and secret coves. Morning: Hike down to Gjipe Beach, a hidden cove tucked at the end of a canyon. It takes a little effort to reach, which keeps it wonderfully quiet. Afternoon: Drive the coastal road, stopping at Porto Palermo to see a small fortress sitting on a peninsula, once linked to Ali Pasha. Evening: Sunset drinks in Himarë’s old town. Tip: Bring water shoes. Many beaches here are pebbly. Day 5: Ksamil and the Ancient City of Butrint Head further south to Ksamil, where tiny islands float in turquoise water just offshore. Morning: Visit Butrint National Park, one of Albania’s most mysterious sites. Ruins of a Greek settlement, later a Roman city and early Christian centre, are scattered through the forest beside a lagoon. You’ll find an ancient theatre, mosaics and a hilltop Venetian castle with a small museum. Budget: The standard Butrint ticket is 1,000 lek, around €10. Afternoon: Swim or paddle out to Ksamil’s islands. Tip: Go to Butrint early in the morning, before the heat and the tour groups arrive. Day 6: The Blue Eye and Gjirokastër, the Stone City Morning: Drive inland to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a natural spring where icy water bubbles up from a deep, bright blue pool. Nobody has ever reached the bottom, which only adds to the mystery. Afternoon: Continue to Gjirokastër, another UNESCO town, built almost entirely of grey stone with slate roofs. Explore the old bazaar and climb to the massive Gjirokastër Castle, one of the largest fortresses in the Balkans. Evening: Visit the town’s Cold War tunnel, a secret bunker built beneath the city. Tip: Try qifqi, Gjirokastër’s local speciality of fried rice balls with herbs. Day 7: Back to Tirana Drive back north to Tirana, around four to five hours, stopping for lunch along the way. Spend your last evening with a final stroll and a coffee in one of the city’s many cafés. Albanians take their coffee culture seriously. Tip: Flying out of the south instead? Consider ending your trip with a ferry from Saranda to Corfu in Greece. Before You Go Carry cash. The local currency is the lek. Cards are common in Tirana, but rural areas and small guesthouses often prefer cash. Drive carefully. Mountain roads are winding, and local driving can be adventurous. Go in shoulder season. July and August get crowded and hot on the Riviera. Pack for variety. You’ll go from city streets to mountain passes to beaches in one week. Learn a few words. “Faleminderit” means thank you, and it goes a long way. Albania doesn’t feel like anywhere else in Europe, and that’s the point. It’s mysterious, warm-hearted and wonderfully affordable. Go before the rest of the world catches on. 🇦🇱 #Albania #AlbaniaTravel #AlbanianRiviera #VisitAlbania #BalkansTravel #HiddenGems #EuropeTravel #Berat #Gjirokaster #TripCom

Twilight washes over the Osum River Valley as Berat’s thousand windows transition from the golden glow of sunset to the warmth of household lights. White houses are layered along the hillside; as the sun fades, the wooden windows facing the river begin to glow one by one. By day, the City of a Thousand Windows is a living landscape painting; after dusk, it becomes a portrait of everyday life. The evening breeze drifts through the old town’s cobblestone alleys, weaving a thousand years of history into the gentle night. 🇦🇱 Albania · Berat

Located in southern Albania, Gjirokastër is a stunning "City of Stone" where the entire town is recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site 🇦🇱✨. 🏛️ What is the history of Gjirokastër? Why is it a tourist destination? ・Location: It sits in the mountainous region of southern Albania near the Greek border (about 55km northeast of the resort town Sarandë and 220km south of the capital, Tirana). ・History: A fortress was first established around the 12th century, and the area came under Ottoman rule in the 14th and 15th centuries. As a mountain stronghold, it flourished. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, wealthy merchants and landowners built fortified stone houses known as "Kulle"—sturdy buildings with small windows designed to protect against enemy raids and clan feuds. ・Why people visit (The highlights): 　① Stone-tiled roofs and fortress-like manors: The town is miraculously preserved, featuring unique houses with flat stone-tiled roofs and winding cobblestone streets. Together with Berat, it is inscribed as the UNESCO World Heritage site "Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra." 　② The magnificent Gjirokastër Castle: Visitors from around the world come to see one of the largest citadels in the Balkans. It offers incredible panoramic views and features exhibits from the communist era, including a US military plane. ⚠️ Real-world tip: The slopes in the Old City are incredibly steep! To reach the Old Bazaar area—packed with souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes—or the castle, you’ll need to hike up very steep, cobblestone hills that will definitely leave you winded! 🥺 ・Walking up with large bags or suitcases is extremely difficult. It’s much smarter to take a taxi (roughly 500–700 Lek) from the new town (near the bus terminal at the bottom) to the Old City. ⏱️ Length of stay: One day (a day trip or overnight stay) is plenty! Since the main sights are concentrated in the Old City, you can easily see everything in a day. If you're heading to Albania, Gjirokastër is a must-visit!

I headed to the Balkan Peninsula's hidden gem, the World Heritage site of Berat in central Albania 🇦🇱✨. Nestled against the mountain slopes along the river, the city is a stunning sight of traditional white-walled houses with countless wooden-framed windows stacked atop one another. It’s famously known as "The City of a Thousand Windows." I spent about 24 hours here (from noon to noon the next day), which was just the right amount of time to take it all in. 🏛️ The Story Behind the View: History and Architecture of Berat Berat has been a fortress city since ancient times, but its current unique look took shape under Ottoman rule starting in the 15th century. · Why so many windows? Because houses were built so densely on steep mountain slopes, the "Ottoman architectural style" was adopted to maximize light and ventilation. Lining up large windows side-by-side facing the streets and the valley created the iconic "Thousand Windows" effect when viewed from afar. · A Living Heritage: This is a "living World Heritage site" where people still reside. The Mangalem district (traditionally Muslim) and the Gorica district (traditionally Christian) face each other across the river, standing as a testament to a long history of religious coexistence. ⚠️ Warning! The cobblestones at Berat Castle are incredibly slippery The paths around Berat Castle at the top of the mountain and the slopes of the Old Town are made of cobblestones that have been polished to a mirror-like shine by centuries of footsteps. Don't make the mistake of wearing sandals; you really will slip and fall. I strongly recommend wearing non-slip sneakers or shoes with excellent grip. 🚌 Bus Details from the City Center to Berat Castle I highly recommend taking the bus! · Pick-up: Near the central square and the river. · Price: 100 Lek one way (approx. $1.10 / pay cash to the conductor on board). · Frequency: Every 30 minutes. · Duration: About 15 minutes (it runs pretty much on time, taking you right up the mountain road to the castle entrance). ☕️ Recommended Cafe: Shtëpia e Kafes Gimi For a break during your walk, check out "Shtëpia e Kafes Gimi," a cafe with a great local vibe! You can enjoy your coffee or drinks in a cute custom cup featuring the "I ❤️ Berat" logo. It's the perfect spot for a souvenir photo! ✨ ⏱️ How long to stay? 24 hours (1 night, 2 days) is perfect! Since the city is compact, you can easily cover the main spots with a schedule like this: arrive at noon on Day 1, explore the Old Town and the Castle in the evening, and spend the morning of Day 2 cafe-hopping before leaving at noon. Five truly enriching days exploring Albania with our guide, Jack, were filled with a well-organised itinerary allowing time to sightsee, walk, and enjoy lunch. Piero even conversed in Arbërishtë, the language of the Arbëreshë communities in Italy, while Jack’s insights helped us understand Albania’s history and vibrant spirit. Jack’s gentle manner, humour, and thoughtfulness enhanced every moment of our journey. From Krujë, the historic heart of Arbëria and the city of Skanderbeg, to Berat—where we admired the museum of icon painter Onufri—and onward to Apollonia, Ardenica, Shkodër, Rozafa Castle, and Venec, we discovered stunning natural landscapes and artistic treasures.
