Xida Circle National Forest Park is located in the southwest of Boli County, Qitaihe City, Heilongjiang Province, about 25 kilometers from Boli County. The average age of the trees is more than 250 years (and some even have 500 years of super strong ancient trees), the rich variety of flora and fauna, really can not miss leaving after walking. History fans must check: The park preserves many remains of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Alliance activities, and you can see the historical imprints of tree roots and fallen wood left by the Japanese army once plundered wood. #easytravelpost Lake Holon sits in Mount Melibengoy's crater at ~1,800 m, sacred to the T'boli, cleanest inland lake in PH. I flew Manila→General Santos (₱2,800), bus to T'boli (2 hrs, ₱120), registered at the Municipal Tourism Office (reg+env ₱150, mandatory guide ₱1,200–1,500/group, habal-habal to Kule jump-off ₱500–700 round trip), and trekked the Salacafe trail 3–4 hrs up. The mossy ridge is the last 40 min below the crater rim: Fissidens and Metzgeria on the agta-black soil where cloud sits till 09:00, and the cliff is the 300 m crater wall dropping to the sapphire water. I camped lakeside (₱100 pitch, no alcohol, no cards—T'boli rule), woke at 05:30, mist burned off at 06:15, a kingfisher worked the far shore. The Kule trail is steeper (5–6 hrs) with the famous view deck; Salacafe is the gentle line. Mistake: I came in August and the afternoon fog never lifted—Dec–Apr only. Another: I offered a beer to the guide at camp and it was politely refused—sacred lake, alcohol banned, respect it. Would you ascend Salacafe and descend Kule for both ridge views, or base at the lake 2 nights and skip the second climb?

22℃ forest cool retreat, a complete summer escape guide for the small city of Qitaihe As the summer heatwave sweeps across the country, Qitaihe, tucked in the foothills of the Wandashan Mountains, is a lesser-known cool getaway in Northeast China. The entire city is surrounded by primeval forests and wetland lakes, with an average daytime temperature of just 22℃ in midsummer. Temperatures near the woods and lakes are 4 to 6℃ lower, offering natural cooling without relying on air conditioning. The breeze, streams, and forest canopy create a natural shade. You can hike through canyon forests to refresh your lungs, cycle on the lake to admire vast lotus ponds, or enjoy canyon rafting and water play paired with refreshing mountain snacks. Combining culture, water activities, and forest camping, it’s quiet and uncrowded—perfect for a family summer escape. Food, lodging, and travel guide The summer escape routes are divided into three main areas: city lakeside leisure, nearby mountain forest oxygen intake, and Boli canyon water play. Self-driving offers the best experience, with green-lined forest roads where you can stop anytime to enjoy the breeze and views. Solo travelers can take taxis to and from nearby spots, while carpooling is recommended for farther scenic areas. Choose lodging based on your needs: if you prefer night markets and morning markets, stay in Taoshan District city center, where restaurants and supermarkets are plentiful. For an immersive forest retreat, choose farmhouse inns near Shilongshan or Xidajuan, where you can feel the mountain breeze at night with windows open, no cooling equipment needed. The local temperature varies greatly between day and night. It’s cool and comfortable in the forest at noon, but drops to around 16℃ in the early morning and evening, so bring a light jacket. The dense forest and wetlands have many mosquitoes, so long pants and strong insect repellent are essential. Summer food focuses on refreshing wild vegetables and cold-water lake fish. Indigo berry ice drinks are a local specialty for cooling down. Three-day cool summer escape itinerary Day 1 Lakeside cool down, cultural wetland stroll The first day focuses on cool city spots, all shaded to avoid the midday sun. Start early at the city’s long-established morning market with a bowl of Boli hot noodles and sugar crisps to fill you up, then pick up affordable souvenirs like dried indigo berries and wild mushrooms. In the morning, visit the short track speed skating champion museum, which is temperature-controlled and cool year-round. Admission is free with an ID card. It’s closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Check out the champion medal wall and Winter Olympics ice skate exhibits, then head to the eighth-floor observation deck for panoramic views of Taoshan Lake, all indoors to escape the heat. In the afternoon, stroll through Taoshan Lake National Wetland Park, open all day for free. The 3,000-meter Five Rings Champion Bridge spans the lake. In July, lotus flowers cover the shoreline, and the wooden boardwalk is flanked by reeds, with lake mist providing continuous coolness. Rent a bike to circle the lake, climb the birdwatching tower to overlook the blue water and reed beds, and often spot egrets and wild ducks gliding across the water. In the evening, wait for the Champion Bay music and water show. The lake breeze cools the air, and later explore the pedestrian street night market for local snacks. Day 2 Primeval forest hike, volcanic secret lung cleanse Spend the whole day in nearby mountain forests to fully experience the cool forest air. In the morning, head to Shilongshan National Forest Park, where over 90% of the area is covered by original mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest in the Wandashan foothills. The basalt rock sea forms unique canyons, and gentle wooden boardwalks wind through the woods. Mountain spring water is cool and sweet, drinkable right from the source. Climb to the Shilong Peak observation deck for sweeping views of rolling green mountains. The dense forest blocks the sun, keeping the whole hike cool and comfortable. In the afternoon, visit Wanbao Music Creative Village, a leisure camp transformed from an abandoned mine. Large lawns and popular music note installations make it perfect for picnics and rest. In the evening, enjoy music camping and a bonfire party. The mountain breeze and forest greenery create a great atmosphere. Stay overnight at a nearby farmhouse and savor freshly picked wild vegetables and iron pot stewed lake fish. Day 3 Canyon rafting and water play, a quiet forest finale The last day focuses on water-based cooling with a summer-only rafting experience. In the morning, visit Xidajuan Wusuhun River Forest Park, where vast original red pine mother forests shade the area. The Hong Canyon rafting route is fully shaded, with clear, cool streams. The 5-km river is gentle yet exciting, making it the top choice for water play and cooling off. Explore Wolong Peak and Yixiantian Canyon, where mountain waterfalls and mist lower the temperature sharply. On the way back, stop at Woken River Deer Island Park to feed sika deer and row on the river alongside black swans. The lake breeze soothes any rafting fatigue. End the trip in the city by picking up souvenirs and enjoying an indigo berry smoothie. Summer cooling specialties Boli hot noodles are a summer breakfast staple, with fragrant bone broth and firm noodles that whet the appetite without heat. Cast iron turtle pot barbecue is full of smoky flavor, with tender meat paired with chilled indigo berry juice to cut the richness. Cold wild vegetable salad and buckwheat bowl are refreshing and low-fat, balancing the summer heat. Clear water stewed willow root fish is fresh and tender, a farmhouse must-order. Night market snacks like grilled eggs, spicy fried silkworm pupae, and traditional grilled cold noodles are affordable treats. Frozen pear platters offer a sweet and sour way to cool down. Helpful summer tips 1. The champion museum is closed every Monday. Forest and wetland parks close entry at dusk, so visit in the morning to allow plenty of time for water play and hiking. 2. Mosquitoes in Shilongshan and Xidajuan forests are strong, so apply insect repellent before entering. Mountain streams and rafting rivers can be slippery with algae; avoid deep water when playing and bring a change of clothes for rafting. 3. Xidajuan Forest Park is one hour from the city by car. Self-driving is more convenient. Supplies are scarce along the way, so bring water and snacks. 4. Winds are strong by the forest and lakes in the early morning and evening. Add a light jacket when walking or camping at dusk to avoid catching a chill. Summer often has short showers, so carry a rain umbrella. 5. Local specialty prices are higher near scenic spots. Buy indigo berries, wild mushrooms, and dried fish at city morning markets or large supermarkets for better value. 6. Rafting is only open from June to September. Confirm operating hours before traveling, and ensure safety precautions for elderly and children. Vast forests hide cool breezes, and a lake of clear water brings gentle refreshment. Qitaihe blends forest canyons, wetland lotus ponds, water rafting, and champion culture into one. Without crowds, it offers a gentle 22℃ summer for a relaxing and healing short summer escape.

Glory on ice with lakes and mountains, slow travel in Qitaihe, the coal city | three-day in-depth travel guide Many people associate Qitaihe with being the hometown of Winter Olympic champions, but they often overlook this small city’s wetlands, forest seas, industrial heritage, red historical sites, and authentic local life. Once a coal mining city, it has now transformed ecologically. On one side is the passionate glory of short track speed skating; on the other is the gentle scenery of Taoshan Lake’s vast reed fields and forest deer herds. The city moves at a relaxed pace, offers affordable prices, and is suitable for short trips all year round. Travel and accommodation guide Qitaihe’s attractions are divided into three main areas: Taoshan urban cultural ecology, nearby countryside, and Boli County’s historic forests. Self-driving is the best way to explore. Attractions in the city center are close together, and taxi fares start low enough for round trips. Solo travelers can get around easily by combining public buses with short taxi rides. Choose accommodation based on your needs: if you enjoy night markets and morning markets, stay in the central business district of Taoshan District, where restaurants and supermarkets are plentiful; if you want to stay by the lake, choose a guesthouse near Taoshan Lake, where you can see the lake and reeds right from your window; if you plan to visit Boli Misai or Dapingtai Forest, spend a night in Boli County. The temperature difference between day and night is significant. It cools quickly by the lake and in the forest at dusk, so always bring a light jacket regardless of the season. The wetlands and forests are lush with plants and mosquitoes, so long pants and insect repellent are essential. The local cuisine blends miner-style street food with Northeast home cooking. The specialty snacks offer great value, and the indigo berry is a unique local product. Three-day essential itinerary Day 1 Champion culture + lakeside ecology, understand the city’s essence Focus on the city’s core landmarks on the first day, connecting ice and snow culture with wetland scenery. Start early at a long-established local morning market with a bowl of authentic Boli hot noodles and sugar crisp cake, then pick up affordable souvenirs like dried indigo berries and wild mushrooms. In the morning, visit the short track speed skating champion museum, a city landmark for culture and tourism. Register free with your ID. Closed all day Monday. Inside, see medals, competition skates, and uniforms of Winter Olympic athletes like Yang Yang, Wang Meng, and Wu Dajing. The gold medal wall is impressive. You can also try skating on a simulated ice surface and climb to the top observation deck for a panoramic view of Taoshan Lake. In the afternoon, stroll through Taoshan Lake National Wetland Park. The free wooden boardwalk circles the lake. The iconic Champion Bridge spans the water. In summer, lotus flowers bloom and egrets and swans often rest in the reeds. Rent a bike to circle the lake or climb the birdwatching platform to admire the green mountains and clear water. The sunset over the lake creates a perfect atmosphere. In the evening, visit Wanbao Lake Industrial Park, a city leisure spot transformed from an abandoned mine. Giant retro mining vehicles add an industrial vibe, and the lawns are great for walking and relaxing. Before nightfall, head to the pedestrian street night market to try turtle pot barbecue and charcoal-grilled skewers, experiencing the city’s lively local flavor. Day 2 Cute deer countryside + city forest, relaxed natural slow travel Spend the day on an easy, gentle nature route suitable for all ages. In the morning, go to Woken River Deer Island Park. For a small fee, buy deer feed to feed the free-roaming sika deer. The wooden deer viewing platform is perfect for photos. Black swans swim on the lake, and you can pedal a boat on the river under shady trees without worrying about sun exposure. In the afternoon, drive to the nearby Zengchan Village countryside, a popular spot with hundreds of acres of wheat fields and a giant blue moon art installation. The wheat waves in the breeze, and the country roads are refreshing, perfect for taking healing countryside photos. On the way back, climb to the Wanghe Pavilion in Taoshan Park. The gentle trail leads to a viewpoint with a full view of the city’s three mountains and two lakes. The forest breeze soothes tired legs. For dinner, choose a local old restaurant to try specialty clay pot roasted pork knuckle and iron pot stewed fish, paired with the sweet and sour indigo berry drink to balance the flavors. Day 3 Red history + primeval forest, unlock hidden gems On the third day, head to Boli County to explore cultural relics and primeval forests. In the morning, visit Boli Misai, a military site left by the invading Japanese army. Dozens of cave warehouses preserve historical traces. Immerse yourself in the heavy red history. Follow the scenic area’s guidance and respect cultural relic protection rules throughout the visit. In the afternoon, go to Dapingtai Forest Park, a vast primeval red pine forest. Take the forest cable car for a bird’s-eye view of the endless green sea. Streams flow through the forest, and the air is rich in negative oxygen ions. Mountain farmhouses serve freshly picked wild vegetables and wild mushroom feasts. At the end of the trip, return to the city’s cultural and creative pedestrian street to complete your souvenir shopping and conclude the journey. Authentic local food list 1. Boli hot noodles: the city’s signature snack, served hot though called cold noodles, with rich bone broth, chewy thin noodles, braised egg, sausage, and special spicy oil. Found everywhere at morning markets and street stalls. 2. Cast iron turtle pot barbecue: unique to Qitaihe, a heavy iron pot shaped like a turtle. Beef and lamb are stir-fried with special sauce at high heat, tender and flavorful. A night market favorite. 3. Mine pit charcoal skewers: originating from old miner food, featuring beef brisket, grilled eggs, and spicy fried silkworm pupae with strong flavors, becoming more delicious with every bite. 4. Wild specialty dishes: clay pot roasted pork knuckle, cold wild vegetable salad, iron pot stewed reservoir fish, all made with fresh natural ingredients. 5. Specialty drinks: chilled indigo berry juice and indigo berry wine, sweet and refreshing, made from a local exclusive fruit. Helpful travel tips 1. The champion museum and museum are closed on Mondays. Adjust your itinerary in advance to avoid wasted trips. Forest and wetland parks stop admitting visitors at dusk, so try to visit in the morning. 2. Taoshan Lake and Deer Island Park have dense vegetation and strong mosquito bites. Apply insect repellent before entering. The lakeside boardwalk can be slippery and wet. Stay away from deep water areas. 3. Boli Misai and Dapingtai Forest Park are over an hour’s drive from the city. Self-driving is more convenient. There are few supply points along the way, so bring enough water and snacks. 4. The lake and forest are windy in the early morning and evening. Bring a light jacket for evening walks to avoid catching a chill. Summer often has short showers, so carry a rain umbrella. 5. Souvenirs near scenic spots are overpriced. Buy indigo berries, wild mushrooms, and dried fish at city morning markets or large supermarkets for better value. 6. Boli Misai is a protected historical site. Do not touch or carve on the cave walls. Follow the scenic route throughout the visit. A small city, half filled with the striving glory of ice and snow arenas, half with the gentle tranquility of lakes and wetlands. Shedding the weight of its industrial past, Qitaihe creates a quiet, uncrowded short-trip destination in Northeast China with healing nature, passionate culture, and authentic local flavor.

Who understands, family? 😭 I can’t keep these three hidden gems of Qitaihe to myself anymore You can explore them all in just 2 days on the weekend. Few people, beautiful scenery, and free to enter Here’s the scoop 🌲 Shilongshan Forest Park Only a 20-minute drive from downtown, no need to rush As soon as you enter, you’re surrounded by green everywhere. The air is so fresh you’ll want to take some home The huge rock at the top looks just like a dragon’s head—perfect for photos Best to go in the morning when the light hits at an angle for a great vibe If you’re fit, take the big loop trail—it takes about 2 hours If you want an easier route, the small loop takes just half an hour and still shows the highlights Don’t miss the pavilion halfway up—you can overlook the whole valley Autumn is even better, with red leaves covering the hills like a spilled palette If you have kids, there’s a big lawn at the foot of the mountain for picnics Remember to bring mosquito repellent because there are quite a few bugs in the woods 🏞️ Wanbaoshan Park Right on the edge of the city, more laid-back than Shilongshan Locals love to stroll here after dinner; it’s full of lively neighborhood vibes The lake at the entrance is a big plus. The reflections at dusk are stunning You can rent a small boat for 30 yuan per half hour A slow walk around the lakeside boardwalk takes about 40 minutes At sunset, the whole lake turns golden There’s a viewing platform on the hilltop with panoramic views of Qitaihe It’s not high—just a 10-minute climb, suitable for seniors and kids In spring, there’s a cherry blossom grove; in summer, lotus flowers In autumn, ginkgo leaves cover the ground; in winter, you can ice skate A year-round hidden gem that never disappoints 🌳 Xidajuan Forest Park The largest and wildest of the three, located in Boli County About a 40-minute drive from downtown, perfect for a full-day trip Feels like a primeval forest with towering old trees The temperature drops several degrees as soon as you enter—a natural air-conditioned spot The creek water is crystal clear; stepping in during summer is incredibly refreshing Wear non-slip shoes because some trails are quite natural and rugged Be sure to hike all the way to the waterfall inside. It’s small but lively When the water splashes, you can see little rainbows There are lots of squirrels along the way; bring some nuts and they’ll come to you Picnicking here is fantastic, but please take your trash with you In autumn, pine needles cover the ground, soft like a carpet 🍜 What to eat The farmhouses near the parks are honest and hearty. Their iron pot stews are super flavorful Try Qitaihe’s grilled cold noodles—they’re different from other places There’s a long-established clay pot restaurant downtown that locals have loved since childhood Boli County’s pig slaughter dish is also worth trying 💡 Tips for visiting All three parks are free to enter, no tickets needed Bring sunscreen and water in summer. The forest is cool but the UV rays are strong Wear comfortable shoes—some trails in Xidajuan are rough Mosquito spray is a must; the bugs in the woods are very enthusiastic Weekends aren’t crowded, so no need to wait in line Driving is recommended. It’s hard to get a taxi back from Xidajuan Two days is just right. Day 1: Shilongshan plus Wanbaoshan Day 2: Sleep in and then go to Xidajuan The slow pace is so relaxing Qitaihe is seriously underrated. Go now before it gets popular

With a budget of 6,000 RMB for 6 days, you can deeply experience its stunning landscapes, rich history, and authentic local life. 📌 Budget Overview (per person, total 6,000 RMB) · Major Transportation (1,200 RMB): Round-trip high-speed rail/train. · Accommodation (1,200 RMB): 200 RMB/night, budget hotels or unique homestays. · Food & Dining (1,200 RMB): 200 RMB/day, tasting local specialties. · Tickets & Experiences (700 RMB): Covers main attraction tickets and activities like rafting. · Local Transportation (400 RMB): City taxis, shuttle buses to scenic spots, and buses to Boli County. · Emergency & Others (300 RMB): Souvenir shopping and backup funds. 🗺️ Six-Day Itinerary Map This itinerary connects the natural beauty, history, and champion culture of Qitaihe. The main activity areas are the city districts (Taoshan District, Xinxing District) and Boli County, with convenient shuttle buses linking them. Key Highlights of the Trip · Natural Wilderness: Enjoy Taoshan Lake National Wetland Park, explore Xiandongshan Karst Cave, and raft in the Xidajuan primeval forest. · Cultural Exploration: Visit the WWII site Boli Misi and experience the Olympic spirit at the Short Track Speed Skating Champions Museum. · Culinary Feast: Taste authentic Northeast flavors like mine pit barbecue, Boli hot noodles, and iron pot stew. Detailed Daily Itinerary: Day 1: First Impressions · The Landscape Painting of the "City Living Room" · Morning/Afternoon: Arrive in Qitaihe and check into your hotel. It’s recommended to stay in Taoshan District for convenient transportation. After settling in, walk or take a taxi to the free Taoshan Lake National Wetland Park. This is the city’s "green lung," with newly built lakeside trails perfect for walking or renting a bike (about 30 RMB/hour). · Evening: Find an authentic mine pit barbecue restaurant in the city. Around 60 RMB per person, be sure to try the snowflake beef grilled with secret sauce. After dinner, stroll around the Yinquan community to experience local nightlife. Day 2: Immersion · The Wild Call of the Forest · All day: Head to Xidajuan Forest Park (about 1.5 hours from the city, ticket 50 RMB). Known as the "Little Jiuzhaigou of Northeast China," you can hike through 500-year-old red pine primeval forest and breathe in the pine resin-scented air. · Core Experience: Don’t miss the summer forest rafting (about 120 RMB/person) on the Woken River for 2 hours of cool excitement. Lunch can be had at the barbecue area at the end point; rent a grill (about 50 RMB) to enjoy grilled corn and lake fish. · Evening: Return to the city and try Qitaihe cold noodles (about 15 RMB/bowl) or Boli hot noodles — one cold, one hot, both local favorites. Day 3: Secrets · Underground War Memories · Morning: Take a bus to Boli County (about 1 hour). Visit Boli Misi (ticket about 40 RMB), a large underground military facility built by the Japanese Kwantung Army at the end of WWII, known as the "Last Secret Fortress." There is now a VR experience (about 30 RMB) to vividly "travel" back to the historical scene. · Afternoon: In Boli County, visit the Boli Museum or Botao Cultural Industry Park to learn about the county’s history and ceramic crafts. For lunch, try Boli’s specialty farmhouse dishes like scallion-braised black fungus. · Evening: Stay overnight in a hotel in Boli County (around 180 RMB/night). You can buy local specialty Boli indigo berries (about 20 RMB/box), which are rich in anthocyanins. Day 4: Tribute · The Glory of the Olympic Champion City · Morning: Return to Qitaihe city. Visit the Short Track Speed Skating Champions Museum (free admission). This is the best place to understand why Qitaihe has produced more than ten world and Winter Olympic champions like Yang Yang and Wang Meng, and to feel the city spirit of "daring to be first and striving for excellence." · Afternoon: Head to Xiandongshan Scenic Area (ticket about 30 RMB) to explore Qitaihe’s rare karst caves. The stalactites inside take on various shapes under the lights, and after exiting, you can climb up for a panoramic view of the city. · Evening: Enjoy a hearty iron pot stew or "pig slaughter dish." This is the most robust Northeast flavor, gathering around a big iron pot to feel the steaming satisfaction. Day 5: Explore · The City’s History and Leisure · Morning: Visit Qitaihe Museum (free), where city models, miner wax figures, and exhibits explain the development story of "mines first, city later." There is also a coal jet stone carving experience (about 50 RMB), and you can take your finished piece home as a souvenir. · Afternoon: Free time. Choose based on your interests: · Arts Route: Visit Wanbao Music Creative Village or Champion Park for photos. · Leisure Route: Enjoy the peaceful countryside at Sixin Village Scenic Area or Nongtou Longma Water Campground. · Evening: For your last dinner, try turtle pot cuisine or a genuine hardworking farmhouse meal to perfectly end your trip. Day 6: Reflection · Return with Full Memories · Morning: Depending on your departure time, you can visit Taoshan Lake again to catch the morning light or shop for souvenirs in the city: besides indigo berries, coal jet stone carved trinkets (about 50 RMB) and Taoshan white liquor (about 40 RMB/bottle) are very special. · Afternoon: Pack up and head to Qitaihe West Station or Boli Station to conclude your fulfilling Qitaihe journey. ✨ Travel Tips & Safety Notes · Best Season: Summer (June to August) is perfect for cooling off and water activities, with lush forests and open rafting. Autumn (September to October) offers the brilliant fall colors of the "Five-Color Mountain." Winter is a paradise for ice and snow lovers. · Transportation Tips: Qitaihe has a high-speed rail station (Qitaihe West Station), about 3 hours from Harbin. In summer 2025, the railway department will add temporary trains from Harbin to Qitaihe, so check the latest schedules before traveling. Within the city and to Boli County, taxis and shuttle buses are very convenient. · Safety & Etiquette: · Summer forests have many mosquitoes; bring insect repellent; always wear a life jacket when rafting. · Maintain solemnity and avoid loud noises when visiting historical sites like Boli Misi. · Winter travel requires full cold-weather gear and caution on icy roads. We hope this guide helps you uncover the poetic veil beyond Qitaihe’s "coal city" image. True travel is about slowing down, listening to the pine waves, touching history, and savoring the most authentic local life. Wishing you a journey full of surprises in Qitaihe!
