With its ancient ruins, charming small harbor, and cobblestone streets, the entire town feels like it’s breathing history. Walking through the archaeological site and old souks gives you a real sense of how many civilizations passed through here. But my favorite moment was simply sitting at one of the cafés by the harbor and watching the sunset. There’s something incredibly peaceful about seeing history and the sea come together — it creates a calm, almost magical atmosphere. If you have extra time, you can easily add Batroun to your itinerary, which is just up the coast and perfect for a quick stop. On the way, you’ll also pass the Middle East’s most famous casino, making the drive even more interesting. I stayed mainly in Beirut, which is full of life, cafés, and seaside views. I also visited Jounieh, which has a beautiful marina and relaxing atmosphere. One of the highlights of the trip was Jeita Grotto, a natural wonder with breathtaking cave formations that truly exceeded my expectations. I also explored Byblos, one of the oldest cities in the world, where history and charm come together through its old streets, port, and castle. Another great stop was Sidon (Saida), where I visited the old souks and seaside castle, giving a more traditional and authentic feel of Lebanon. Getting around was easiest by taxi or private car, as public transport is limited. Distances between cities are short, so it’s possible to visit multiple places in one day. Lebanese food is a highlight don’t miss mezze, grilled meats, and fresh seafood, especially in coastal cities like Jounieh and Byblos. Prices were reasonable for food and transport, though it depends on the area. Tips: Start your day early to cover multiple locations, visit Jeita Grotto before noon to avoid crowds, and plan sunset time at Harissa for the best views. Today, the Lebanese city of Jbeil is situated on the site of Byblos. Located on the Mediterranean coast, Byblos, perhaps due to its advantageous geographical location and strategic importance, was successively ruled by Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs throughout history, with each era leaving a unique mark on the city. In the 12th century AD, the Crusaders built a castle here during their eastern campaigns. This castle, built from massive stone blocks, is known as the "Great Wall" of Lebanon and is the iconic building of the ancient city of Byblos, naturally a key attraction when visiting the ancient city ruins. It stands on the site of a 9th-century building, towering and imposing. The entire castle consists of a main tower, walls, fortifications, and some internal rooms. The main tower is the core part of the castle, usually used for command and residence. The castle is not large in scale, but its walls are thick and the structure is solid. Standing on top of the castle, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea and the bustling city of Byblos. At the same time, movements on the sea and land are closely monitored and controlled, which was the reason the Crusaders built it in the first place.

This fortress, begun in the 12th century and continuously repaired and rebuilt over centuries, features several large vaulted halls. Archaeological excavations are ongoing in this ancient city formed by the interweaving and layering of several old towns. From the castle’s main tower vantage point, the vast excavation site is fully visible. It was dedicated to Saint John Marc, teh first to gather Byblos people around Christianity. Until today, the firstname John Marc is very common in Byblos and it's suburbs. Renovation works to the basilica took place until our days , however the biggest renovation project was undertaken by lebanese maronite priests during the 19th century ; works aimed by then at preserving the byzantine / romanesque sculpture of the church while taking care also of the exterior walls and surrounding gardens. In brief, a visit to Byblos/Jbeil must included a visit to Saint John Marc cathedral and it's gardens.

Definitely go with a professional guide to understand the significant history of the castle across many centuries and occupations/rulers. Stairs inside castle are very steep and not well lit so not suitable for less able visitors. Views from the top of the castle are fantastic across the whole historical site, up to Byblos town and along the coast towards Beirut. There are very basic toilets on site with a charge to the attendant. Fascinating historical site well worth a visit.
