A park gardener working nearby immediately dropped his rake and hurried over, shooing the bird away with a firm wave of his arm. "They're nesting season," he explained gruffly. "And you were standing right under a prime roosting spot." He then walked me through the nuances of coexisting with Sydney's avian wildlife. He explained that while the cockatoos look comical, they can become quite territorial, especially around food. He advised never feeding them, as it encourages aggressive behavior and disrupts their natural foraging. He showed me how to identify the difference between a curious cockatoo and an agitated one—the latter involves raised crest feathers and a specific, rhythmic tapping sound. He also pointed out the Bottlebrush trees that were currently flowering, attracting Rainbow Lorikeets instead—much more docile and colorful. His kindness extended to sharing practical advice: wear a hat with a brim (not just for sun, but for bird droppings!), stay on marked paths during nesting season (August to February), and if a bird approaches, slowly back away while maintaining eye contact. Also, walk past Dollard Arena, which bustles as an ice skating rink in the winter, to experience the town's sports culture. Then, head over to Bunker Sports. As the name "Bunker" suggests, the fortress-like, sturdy interior is a space completely optimized for watching soccer. Screens line the walls, strategically placed so you can comfortably watch the game from any seat. When I caught a match here, the place was packed with local ice hockey fans. They were passionately debating, "Soccer is a winter sport too. The tactical defending is just like defense in ice hockey." I highly recommend this spot because it lets you experience Montreal's "classic suburban sports viewing." There are no flashy gimmicks, which allows you to focus purely on the tactics and excitement of the game. Plus, if you want to discover the standard West Island viewing style—a casual spot where families and students can easily drop by—this is the perfect place. Practical Info: Walking distance from Dollard Station. The surrounding area is a well-planned residential neighborhood that is safe and ideal for a family stay.

#australiatrip Wandered from the Paddington bus stop through Centennial Park - its huge spread of 189 hectares similar in size and in interesting 19th century history to Royal Park in Melbourne. The Lachlan Swamp was marvellous, and its old Melaleuca and fern forest magical. We spotted bats, kookaburras, pelicans and masses of noisy sulphur-crested cockatoos. We also sought out the magnificent house where Nobel prize winning author Patrick White lived, remembering his championship of the Park in the 1980s. #sydneytrip Peaceful and spacious park for everyone - from cyclists and runners who can easily do 5km loops around the park, to kids and families who want to have picnics, to anyone of any age who simply enjoys going for a walk. If you're feeling more adventurous, there's lots to explore away from the circular track around the park - from a rose garden to labyrinth course to flying fox bat viewing areas. Plenty of free bathrooms and water stations available at the park, with 3 main coffee shops if you want to grab a quick beverage or bite. For something fancier, Homestead is your best bet. There's also plenty of 3P parking available in the park itself though if you're new to the park, I'd stick to the Randwick or Oxford Street gate to enter if you're a car as some of the other gates are blocked off at certain times of the day.
