Aosta Valley travel guide and discussion

The alps offer uncountable breathtaking spots to visit, this one is in the Italian alps, more precisely in Piedmont, in the north west of the country. Lago di Ceresole (Ceresole Lake) is a scenic artificial alpine reservoir at 1,582 meters above sea level in the Orco Valley, Piedmont, Italy. It's set within the Gran Paradiso National Park, and the best part is that it features a flat 7.5 to 9 km walking trail around the water, accessible even to people that are not confident when it comes to hiking, not only the trail is flat but there are also picnic tables all along the loop to sit and take a break if needed! The water has an incredible colour and stunning mountain backdrops, and nearby access to the Nivolet Pass (buses to reach the pass need to be reserved at least a day in advance before 6pm). Can't recommend this place enough for a daytrip escaping the summer heat, to enjoy quiet nature and take pics with the most incredible backgrounds! 📍Lago di Ceresole Ceresole Reale municipality, Province of Turin (approx. 2 hours drive from Turin) #photospot #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #naturalwonders #thingstodo #familytravel #myitinerary #italy #italianalps #mountainlake #bluewaters #lagodiceresole #piedmont #mountainview

My recent visit to Busson was a memorable experience. I spent my time exploring the valley and soaking in its relaxed ambiance. The local cuisine was a highlight, with cozy cafes offering a variety of dishes. I particularly enjoyed trying traditional foods like hearty stews and freshly baked bread. The simplicity of Busson's lifestyle and the warm hospitality of the locals left a positive impression on me. It's a place where you can truly unwind and savor the flavors of the region. If you're looking for a peaceful getaway with authentic local experiences, Busson is definitely worth a visit. #timetotravel

The fortresses were built by different people over the centuries, like the Romans, the Savoy, and even Napoleon. Some of them are on top of mountains, like Fort Bard, which is an amazing sight. Other fortresses are in the valleys, like the ones in Saint-Vincent and Châtillon. They have beautiful gardens and spas, and you can relax and enjoy the view of the Alps. The Aosta Valley is full of history and nature, and I think it's a great place to visit. #italy #aosta #getaway

Day 3 of the TMB (Tour du Mont Blanc) takes you from France into Italy and is one of the most magnificent and contrasting sections of the entire route. On this day, you will travel from the Beaufortain pastures in France, cross the Col de la Seigne, and enter the Val Veny in Italy, where the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation from pastoral idyll to towering glaciers. 🏔️ Crossing the border: Col de la Seigne (2,516m) This is the core highlight of the day and the first international border crossing on the TMB route. · A sudden change in scenery: The moment you reach the pass, the ground beneath your feet shifts from soft meadows to hard rock. The view opens up instantly, and the massive south face of Mont Blanc appears with striking impact, a stark contrast to the gentler side seen from Chamonix, France. · Panoramic glacier views: Looking ahead, you'll see the magnificent panorama of the Val Veny in Italy and the towering Glacier de la Lée Blanche. Many hikers consider this one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the entire TMB route. 🏞️ Descending into Italy: Val Veny After crossing the pass, the trail descends along the valley in a wide arc. · Alpine pastures: As you descend, the landscape softens. You will pass through the La Pellet pastures, where cascading waterfalls and blooming wildflowers create a classic Alpine pastoral scene. · Excellent viewpoints: Along the way, you will pass Lac de Combal, an ideal spot for a high-altitude break. Continuing on to Lac Chécrouit, you can enjoy distant views of the glaciers and mountains opposite. 🏠 Overnight stay: Rifugio Elisabetta (2,195m) · This mountain hut is built on a cliff platform directly facing the Glacier de la Lée Blanche. Known as an eagle's nest viewpoint, it is the perfect spot to watch the alpenglow in the evening. 💡 Other highlights along the way · Environmental museum: Along the way, you will pass the La Casermetta Environmental Museum, which was converted from an old border guard post, where you can learn about the local nature and history. · Alpine wildlife: In the Vallée des Glaciers in France, you might encounter Tarine cows wearing bells and Patou sheepdogs protecting their flocks, which is also a unique cultural experience on the TMB.

Day 3 of the TMB (counter-clockwise) starts from Les Chapieux, France, crosses Col de la Seigne into Italy, and ends at Rifugio Maison Vieille. This is a key day for transitioning from the French section to the Italian section. 🗺️ Key stats · Distance and elevation: Approx. 25 km, with a cumulative ascent/descent of about 1,000–1,140 m each. · Key mountain pass: Col de la Seigne (elevation approx. 2,505 m), which marks the border between France and Italy. ⚠️ Hiking challenges and tips · The long, grueling stretch: The descent after Col de la Seigne is relatively easy, but it is followed by a 3-hour stretch of significant ascent and descent with no accommodation in between, which is very physically demanding. If you are struggling, consider camping at the lakeside campsite along the way (near Lago del Miage) to rest. · Watch out for cattle: There is a cattle farm on the main road approaching Rifugio Maison Vieille, and many cows may block the path. It is recommended to wait and pass with others, or keep a safe distance and walk around them. · Weather and trail conditions: This section is at a high altitude. If hiking in June or September, you are likely to encounter snow, so be sure to wear waterproof, non-slip hiking boots and bring trekking poles. 💡 Practical tips If you still have energy, you can try to descend directly to Courmayeur to rest, but this will significantly increase the distance and elevation gain. It is recommended to arrange a shuttle to Courmayeur in advance. After finishing this exhausting day, Courmayeur has shops and restaurants, making it a great place for supplies and rest.

I have traveled to a lot of places around the world, but nothing prepared me for the sheer magic of standing in the Aosta Valley during peak autumn. Tucked right beneath the towering shadows of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) and the iconic Matterhorn (Cervino), this alpine region transforms into an explosion of fiery red, deep rust, and shimmering gold every October. The contrast is unbelievable! vibrant larch trees glowing like molten gold against the backdrop of snow-capped granite peaks and crisp blue skies. Steeped in history as an ancient Roman crossroads surrounded by over a hundred medieval castles like Fenis and Bard, the valley feels like walking through a living fairytale. Standing on a trail above Cogne, watching the morning mist roll over the golden foliage while the majestic peaks caught the first rays of sunlight, was a moment that made me completely freeze in awe. If you want to experience this autumn wonderland like a true insider, my biggest local tip is to skip the ultra-expensive resort hubs like Courmayeur or Breuil-Cervinia for your base stay. Instead, book a cozy agriturismo (a traditional family-run farm stay) in smaller villages like La Salle, Cogne, or Morgex. Not only will you save a fortune, but you'll also get served homemade, hearty Valdostan meals straight from the hearth! While I was there, I spent around €85 to €110 per night for a charming room with breakfast included, which is an absolute steal compared to the winter peak prices. Hike the scenic trails around Gran Paradiso National Park, which are entirely free.. or ride the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car (tickets run around €55-€60) for a mind-blowing 360-degree view of Mont Blanc floating above a sea of amber pine canopy. To really taste the essence of autumn in Aosta, you have to eat like the locals do after a long fall trek. Head into a small mountain tavern (osteria) and order a steaming bowl of Zuppa Alla Valdostana! a comforting, rich broth baked with cabbage, stale rye bread, and melted local Fontina cheese.. paired with a glass of crisp regional Torrette red wine. A full feast with wine usually cost me around €25 to €35 per person, making it as affordable as it was delicious. Make sure to pack warm, versatile layers because crisp, sunny 15°C mountain afternoons can quickly drop to near-freezing as soon as the sun dips behind the Matterhorn! Trust me on this one: pack a camera, leave the heavy tourist crowds behind, and let the autumn colors of the Aosta Valley steal your heart the same way they stole mine. #AostaValley #AutumnInItaly #MontBlanc #Matterhorn #FallFoliage #ItalianAlps #TravelAosta #GranParadiso #AutumnVibes #VisitItaly #fallcolors

This trip was meticulously planned, involving a full year of physical and resistance training in 2025 for a 12-day trek on the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB). This is a thoroughly prepared journey, involving a year of dedicated fitness and strength training in 2025 for a 12-day TMB trek, spanning 100km across the borders of Switzerland, France, and Italy with a total ascent of 7,500 meters. Along the route are cozy mountain huts, pastures, and beautiful, unidentified flora, all set against the majestic mountain scenery of Mont Blanc rolling across the horizon. This is a memory created in this beautiful era that I will be proud of for a lifetime.

#epictravelmoments I came to Aosta Valley expecting beautiful mountains, but experiencing them up close was something completely different. I remember walking along rugged paths with the peaks towering above me and hearing mountain streams nearby. Every viewpoint seemed to offer another incredible composition for a photo, but I often found myself putting the camera away simply to enjoy the landscape. My advice is to begin your outdoor activities early, wear appropriate layers, and download or carry reliable route information rather than depending entirely on phone reception. If you’re planning climbing, canyoning, or other technical adventures, use qualified local professionals and appropriate safety equipment. Aosta Valley became one of my favorite #epictravelmoments because it combined physical adventure with some of the most dramatic scenery I experienced in Italy.

I spent nine days hiking the TMB (Mont Blanc circuit), crossing France, Italy, and Switzerland, witnessing the majestic yet gentle snow-capped mountains paired with beautiful meadows. 1. The ultimate battle of white and black (Les Grands Montets flank) When you gasp climbing the scree slope and look up, the massive white granite of Mont Blanc looms like a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier suddenly pressing down before your eyes. That overwhelming feeling instantly explains why this place is called the “white hell.” 2. Color overload (Italian side at Fenetre d'Arpette or Col de la Seigne) Crossing the pass into Italy, the blue sky is an unreal cobalt blue. Below your feet is a caramel-colored scree slope, and in the distance, a dark green conifer forest belt. 3. The “3D surround sound” of cowbells (Swiss Trient valley) The most unforgettable part of the Swiss section isn’t the scenery but the sound. As you walk through the meadows, cowbells from all directions create a natural Doppler effect due to their different sound sources. The auditory feast is so rich that you hesitate to cover it up with the sound of your footsteps. 4. The “ghost pine forest” in the morning mist Approaching Courmayeur, you pass through oddly shaped five-needle pines, touch larches with soft needles, see the sharp peaks reflected in the water, and witness the confluence of two streams of snowmelt—one muddy, one clear. 5. A perfect finish at the magnificent Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix Back in Chamonix, the next morning I took the cable car up to the famous Aiguille du Midi viewing platform at 3,842 meters. The cold air was biting. Across from me, Mont Blanc stood covered in snow and ice, with rugged black rock faces. This grandeur is the best reward for the last day of a long trek. The attached photos record the daily beauty with two pictures per day.

#epictravelmoments Aosta Valley gave me the perfect combination of adventure and scenery. I remember following a mountain trail while surrounded by forests and enormous peaks, occasionally stopping to look back at the valley below. The atmosphere felt peaceful, but there was always a sense of adventure because of the rugged terrain around me. One of my favorite parts was reaching higher viewpoints and seeing the landscape gradually change beneath me. My biggest tip is to research your route beforehand, check elevation gain, carry enough food and water, and bring an extra layer even when the valley feels warm. Don’t underestimate Alpine weather. For me, this was a true #epictravelmoments destination because the journey itself became as memorable as the scenery at the end.

#epictravelmoments My time exploring Aosta Valley was filled with the kind of mountain scenery that makes you stop walking just to take it all in. Huge Alpine peaks surrounded the valley, while rivers, forests, rocky trails, and small mountain villages created an incredible backdrop. I remember hiking through the landscape and feeling completely immersed in nature, with the mountains appearing almost impossibly tall from the valley floor. My tip is to wear sturdy hiking shoes, carry plenty of water, and check the weather before heading onto mountain trails because conditions can change quickly. For more technical activities, local guides are a great choice. Aosta Valley fit #epictravelmoments perfectly for me because the scale of the Alps made even an ordinary hiking day feel like a major expedition.

#epictravelmoments I remember traveling through Aosta Valley and constantly feeling as though the mountains were getting bigger around me. The valley has an incredible outdoor atmosphere, with high Alpine peaks, rocky landscapes, rivers, trails, and countless opportunities to turn a sightseeing trip into an adventure. Instead of spending the entire day in the car, I wanted to get outside and experience the mountains directly. That made Aosta Valley a natural match for #adventuretravel. One day could involve hiking through dramatic scenery, while another could be devoted to climbing, rafting, or exploring mountain routes. My tip is not to underestimate the terrain. Wear proper hiking shoes, check the forecast, carry enough water, and plan your route according to your fitness level. I found that the best moments came when I left the easiest viewpoints behind and followed the quieter trails. The mountains made me feel small, but in the best possible way.

#epictravelmoments Aosta Valley was one of those places where I quickly stopped worrying about following a strict itinerary. I would see a trail disappearing toward the mountains and immediately want to know where it led. The scenery changed constantly—green valleys, rocky slopes, Alpine villages, and enormous peaks creating a dramatic backdrop wherever I went. For me, #adventuretravel here meant freedom and exploration rather than one single activity. The valley offers so many ways to get outdoors that I could easily build an entire trip around hiking and mountain experiences. My advice is to start early for longer routes, check trail conditions before setting off, and carry layers because mountain weather can change quickly. Good footwear is essential too. What stayed with me most was the feeling of having an entire Alpine landscape in front of me and simply choosing my next direction.

Wow! My partner surprised me with a stay here because it was one of the first hotels we visited together back when it was still Nobu. Aethos has done an amazing job; the staff were so friendly, the spaces maintained their high-end charm yet felt a bit brighter compared to when it was Nobu. That said, I did miss the warm scented towels we used to get on arrival at Nobu. They did offer a pillow menu, which was a fun touch—I requested a chamomile pillow but couldn't really notice a difference in scent. Regardless, I had a fantastic night's sleep! We chose to dine at Mitsu on our first night, and it was truly exceptional. The food and service actually surpassed what we remembered from Nobu. Our server Kevin was incredibly personable, and the entire staff went out of their way to make us feel relaxed and welcome. The prices for food were also much more reasonable than Nobu, and the cocktails were both inventive and delicious. Breakfast was another highlight of our stay. I absolutely loved starting each morning with fresh honeycomb on my Greek yogurt, and the continental selection was excellent. On top of that, we could choose a dish from the menu—I went for the mushrooms, while my partner had the eggs Benedict. My only note would be that both dishes felt a touch more like lunch plates than traditional breakfast options due to the seasoning and veggies. The only downside was that after we got home, I noticed our invoice included a charge for mini bar sweets we didn’t consume, which was a bit disappointing. (Side note, the rhubarb Paloma cans in the mini bar are divine!) Overall, it was a fantastic and memorable stay. We were so impressed and can’t wait to come back!

In the italian alps you can find this 32-meter high waterfall, it's located in the Orco Valley within the Gran Paradiso National Park area in Piedmont. It is famous for a unique rock path that lets visitors walk directly behind the rushing water, allowing you to enjoy incredible views and take stunning and unique pictures! The waterfall is located in Noasca, Province of Turin and the trail to reach is short but a bit steep, the starting point is near the parish church or the main road in Noasca center and the duration is 10 to 15 minutes walking each way. The trail is about 0.6 km total with a 41-meter elevation change. !!Wear sturdy hiking shoes or trainers with good grip, as the rocks behind the drop can be wet and slippery!! The best time to visit are late spring and summer, they offer powerful water flow and a cool mist, occasionally creating rainbows in the spray!🌈 📍Cascata di Noasca Strada Statale 460 di Ceresole, 73, 10080 Noasca TO #mountainview #piedmont #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #naturalwonders #thingstodo #familytravel #myitinerary #italy #italytravel #noascawaterfall #waterfall #mustsee #italianalps

Courmayeur, the most charming town at the foot of Mont Blanc, blends stunning mountain scenery with refined Italian lifestyle. Its popularity comes from being a top mountain resort suitable for all seasons, offering both thrilling adventures and leisurely enjoyment. 🏔️ Outdoor paradise in the Alps · Hiking base in spring, summer, and fall: It’s a must-stop on the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) and a key location for trail running events like UTMB. The slopes suit beginner and intermediate skiers, while helicopter skiing and off-piste routes challenge experts. 🚠 Must-try “skyline” cable car · Skyway Monte Bianco: A must-visit in Courmayeur. The cable car takes you to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m elevation. The cabin rotates 360 degrees, offering unobstructed views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and other famous peaks. · Cross-border access: The cable car and Mont Blanc tunnel provide easy connections to Chamonix, France’s renowned ski resort. 🍝 Italian “sweet life” and charm · Refined small-town life: Via Roma in the town center is lined with boutiques, antique shops, and cafes. #kindnessontheroad Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, specifically the grueling ascent from Les Chapieux to Col de la Seigne, the sun reflects mercilessly off the snowfields and glaciers. Despite wearing a wide-brimmed hat and SPF 50 sunscreen, the heat exhaustion was creeping in. I sat down on a rock to rest, feeling lightheaded. A group of Italian hikers passed by, and one woman paused. She didn't offer water—I had plenty—but instead, she reached into her pack and pulled out an individually wrapped, refrigerated wet wipe. She pressed it firmly against the back of my neck and then onto my wrists. The instant cooling effect was miraculous, dropping my skin temperature and clearing the fog in my brain almost immediately. It was a gesture of "cool kindness" that required no words. On alpine trails, the sun is your silent enemy. Standard advice says drink water, but managing heat absorption is just as critical. Pack cooling towels or, failing that, a bandana you can dip in every stream. Keep a few of those expensive, individually wrapped alcohol wipes in a ziplock bag; they weigh nothing but provide incredible evaporative cooling when applied to pulse points (neck, wrists, temples). Also, wear UV-blocking arm sleeves even if it feels hot; they protect your skin and actually keep you cooler than bare arms. Have you discovered any unconventional hacks for staying cool during intense summer trek

An incredible experience at Aethos - we were welcomed with chocolate pudding featuring a birthday message in the room. When we realized we didn't have milk for coffee, it was brought up to us so quickly. The staff were attentive and kind, making my partner's birthday truly special! The property is absolutely stunning, in a fantastic location, and offers great value for money.

At the junction of France and Italy, nestled among the peaks of the Alps, lies a mountain pass at an altitude of 2,188 meters—Col du Petit Saint-Bernard. Though not as famous as Mont Blanc, it is one of the most worthwhile hidden gems in the Alps, known for its rich history, stunning natural scenery, and unique cultural atmosphere. 📜 Walk the Ancient Path, Read a Chapter of European History The history of Col du Petit Saint-Bernard dates back to the Neolithic era. It is said that in 218 BC, the Carthaginian general Hannibal crossed this pass on his campaign against Rome; during the Roman era, a temple dedicated to Jupiter and a relay station were built here to provide rest for travelers. In the 11th century, Saint Bernard of Menthon established a hospice here to shelter pilgrims from the elements. The Tour de France has passed through this pass four times (in 1949, 1959, 1963, and 2009). Standing at the pass, every inch of land beneath your feet echoes with a thousand years of history. 🏛️ Three Must-Visit Landmarks, Each Worth a Stop · Hospice du Petit Saint Bernard: This stone building, originally constructed in the 11th century, has been converted into a museum and visitor center. You can stay overnight here and enjoy authentic mountain cuisine in its historic restaurant. · La Chanousia Alpine Botanical Garden: Founded by Father Chanoux, it houses nearly 1,000 species of alpine plants. In summer, after the snow melts, it resembles an "angelic garden in the mountains." · Ancient Roman Road Ruins: The pass still preserves remnants of the Roman road. On the Italian side, you can also see the foundations of the Jupiter temple. 🚴 Outdoor Paradise: The Ultimate Challenge for Hiking and Cycling The pass is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The Roman road is a 10-kilometer ancient path, simple yet rich in history; the Petit Saint Bernard Lake loop takes about 2 hours, passing meadows full of blooming flowers and streams. Cyclists can challenge the same route used in the Tour de France—from Fort Saint Maurice, the nearly 30-kilometer climb has a steady gradient, perfect for conquering your first "2000-meter" mountain pass. 📸 Unmissable Stunning Moments From the pass, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Mont Blanc. At sunset, when the Alps are bathed in pink hues, every snapshot looks like a masterpiece. There is also a statue of a Saint Bernard dog at the pass—don’t forget to take a photo with this "mascot" of the Alps. 🚗 Practical Travel Tips · Best Season: The road is usually open from early June to early November and closed in winter due to snow. Winter sports enthusiasts can cross via the Saint Bernard ski route. · Transportation: You can drive from La Rosière on the French side or La Thuile on the Italian side; free parking is available near the pass. Shuttle buses operate in summer. · Accommodation and Dining: The hospice offers simple lodging and dining services; it is recommended to check opening hours in advance. Col du Petit Saint-Bernard is not only a mountain pass connecting two countries but also an open history book and a moving landscape painting. Whether you are tracing historical footsteps or challenging your limits, this place will not disappoint you.

Yesterday, I revisited Casa Laugier, albeit only from the outside. Built in 1905 by architect Tagliaferri for a wealthy Aosta Valley family, it is a significant example of the Liberty style. The building stands out for the contrast between the red exposed bricks, the decorative use of cement, the painted ceramic floral motifs, the wrought iron balconies, and the cement lion heads on the main floor. Notably, since its construction, the building has housed the Santa Teresa Pharmacy (see reviews), whose wooden interior furnishings, also in the Liberty style and contemporary to the house, are still in use. A beautiful building well worth a visit!

Just awesome 🤘

You don't expect to share a mountainside with a herd of wild ibex, but in Gran Paradiso it happens 🐐. These were grazing in the open, completely unbothered by us, the big males with those huge curved horns moving slowly across the grass. The alpine ibex is the symbol of this park for a reason: they were almost hunted to extinction, and Gran Paradiso became Italy's first national park in 1922 largely to save them. Higher up the snow was still lying in deep patches, and you could read the whole morning in the animal tracks crossing it. We even stopped to build a tiny snowman on a rock while the peaks watched over us ⛄. If you want to see the ibex, go early, they come down to feed in the first hours after sunrise and again near dusk, and the meadows around Valnontey above Cogne are one of the most reliable spots. Bring binoculars and don't approach, just sit still and let them pass. The park is free to enter and easy to reach from Aosta. Save this for your trip. Have you ever been this close to a wild animal on a hike? 📍 Gran Paradiso National Park, Aosta Valley, Italy #granparadiso #ibex #wildlife #aostavalley #italianalps #travel2026#travel#naturalwonders#thingstodo

We came up into Gran Paradiso expecting spring and walked straight back into winter. It was the third week of May, the valleys below already green, but the moment the trail climbed, the snow took over and the big peaks were still completely white ❄️. Gran Paradiso is the oldest national park in Italy, and standing under that wall of snow and rock you understand why they protected it. I climbed a boulder just to take in the scale, the summits rise over 4,000 metres and from the valley you feel tiny. Lower down, a fast glacial river cuts through the stones, ice-cold and clear straight off the snowfields. If you go in late spring: the lower valley walks from Cogne or Valsavarenche are easy and clear, but anything higher still needs proper boots and layers, the snow stays soft and deep into the afternoon 🥾. Entry is free, and you reach the park from Aosta in under an hour by car. Go early, the light on the peaks is best before midday. Save this for your own Gran Paradiso hike. Would you walk up into snow like this in May, or wait for summer? 📍 Gran Paradiso National Park, Aosta Valley, Italy #granparadiso #aostavalley #italianalps #hikingitaly #nationalpark #travel2026#travel#naturalwonders#thingstodo
