Walking through this kaleidoscopic landscape feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Beyond being a paradise for hiking and cycling enthusiasts, it is also a filming location for "Star Wars"—a destination fans simply cannot miss. Recommended Route: We suggest starting from the main forest entrance and wandering along the popular Scowles trail. The walk takes about an hour and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of the ancient woods. If you’re feeling energetic, you can continue on to the longer Wye Valley path, weaving through the shaded trees where you might even spot some wildlife. It’s both a great hike and a perfect photo op. If you’d prefer something more relaxed, there are shorter loops around the main area featuring observation decks and gazebos where you can rest and snap photos without worrying about getting lost. Must-See Spots and Photo Ops: There are signposts throughout the forest center. We highly recommend finding the "Misty Avenue" deep in the woods; if you arrive on an early autumn morning, the ethereal fog makes for incredible photography. Additionally, the Scowles rock faces, the reflecting lake, and the small wooden bridges are all popular spots where you can easily capture that "Star Wars" vibe. If time permits, consider renting a bike to explore further afield; the breeze through the trees is incredibly refreshing. Travel Tips: 1. The best time to visit is around October when the weather is cool and crisp, and the autumn foliage is at its most spectacular. 2. Aim for an early morning start to avoid the crowds and capture those perfect, empty-path shots. 3. Wear comfortable hiking shoes or non-slip sneakers, as the ground can get muddy and slippery in late autumn. 4. The forest is vast, so it’s a good idea to mark your entrance location on your phone to avoid getting lost. 5. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as convenience stores are hard to find deep in the woods. 6. Keep an eye on the weather and the time; the sun sets early in autumn, so try to leave the deeper parts of the forest before the afternoon ends. 7. Restrooms are available but are quite spread out, so check their locations beforehand if needed. Important Notes: The Forest of Dean is open year-round, 24 hours a day, but entering at night is not recommended due to safety and visibility concerns. Redwick Circular Distance: 5 miles or 8 km | Time: 2.5 hours Redwick is a small medieval village on the Gwent Levels, surrounded by fields criss-crossed by drainage ditches, or reens. A pleasant mix of rural footpaths and a refreshing coastal walk takes you from the impressive Church of St Thomas at Redwick to Porton and back via a section of the Wales Coast Path. Many stiles and narrow footbridges to cross, however, fields can be very muddy throughout winter. Limited car parking opposite Redwick Church. Walk Highlights Church of St Thomas the Apostle, Redwick The ancient church of St. Thomas the Apostle is unusually large for a parish church on the Caldicot and Wentloog Levels. The church has a full-immersion baptistry, unique medieval stone carvings and a fine Victorian pipe organ salvaged from two previous churches. On the ancient south porch is a mark indicating the flood level caused by the Bristol Channel flood, 1607. Sea Wall The sea wall was extensively rebuilt in the 1950s and '60s with a stone rubble face and a concrete wave return wall on top. It cuts across the older field layout, creating odd shaped triangular fields. Built around the 3rd century BC, it features impressive multiple ramparts and is thought to have been a major tribal stronghold of the Silures before the Roman conquest. The Foresters Oaks typically refers to the public car park and picnic site located on the edge of the ancient Wentwood forest, just a few miles north of Caerwent. It serves as a popular, free starting point for local hikers tackling routes like the Wentwood and Gray Hill circuit. The Gray Hill restoration project This is a historical re-enactment project which aims recreate an agricultural settlement as it would have existed 400 years ago. First of all, this location is really good for Wales observers. We went to Cardiff and to Chepstow easily in this short 2-night stay. Second, hotel is good as it is, modern enough and charming as well. Third, parking is included and close to property. Forth, spa is very good and also free for guests. For a solo traveler, it’s a sprawling, atmospheric playground where you can trace nearly 600 years of military history entirely at your own pace. My Solo Itinerary: A Walk Through Centuries 10. 00 AM - The Great Gatehouse I started my conquest at the mighty gatehouse, the castle's first line of defense. Stepping through here immediately sets the tone. I grabbed the excellent audio guide—my perfect, personal storyteller for the day—and began to explore. The advantage of being solo? I could stand in that entrance for ten minutes, just imagining the portcullis slamming down, without holding anyone up. 11. 30 AM - Towers, Dungeons & River Views I followed the audio guide's suggestions but felt free to wander off-script. I climbed the Marten's Tower for the breathtaking view of the winding River Wye, a vista that rewards the steep climb. I descended into the damp dungeons and stood in the grand hall, feeling the sheer scale of the place. The freedom to dart into a side room or spend extra time deciphering a medieval graffito carved into the wall is the true joy of a solo visit. 1. 00 PM - A Picnic with a Panorama I’d packed a lunch and found a perfect bench on the castle grounds, right on the cliff edge. Eating a sandwich while looking out over the river and the English border beyond was a simple, sublime experience no café could match. 2. 00 PM - The Outer Walls & A Final Stroll I spent my last hour walking the entire length of the long, narrow castle, tracing the outer walls. Seeing the architectural evolution from the Norman period to the later Tudor additions is like reading a history book in stone. Leaving the castle, I crossed the road to see the oldest castle door in Europe, a final, fascinating detail. Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered: · The Audio Guide is a Must: It’s informative, well-paced, and the ideal companion, bringing the empty shells of the buildings to life. · Wear Sturdy Shoes: You'll be climbing spiral staircases and walking on uneven surfaces. Good grip is non-negotiable. · Look for the Little Things: With no one to hurry you, you can spot the subtle details—mason's marks, fireplaces, and arrow slits that show how the castle evolved. · Combine with the Town: Chepstow itself is lovely. Running along the route of the former Wye Valley Railway the greenway offers cyclists, walkers, and wheelchair users a safe and sustainable link between Wyedean School, Sedbury & Chepstow to the picturesque village of Tintern, via the spectacular 1km Tidenham Tunnel. These images cover the route as far as the entrance to Tidenham Tunnel. Return to Chepstow via the Gloucestershire Way or alternatively you can follow Offas Dyke National trail. The former is easier and offers a more gentle walking experience. The latter involves a a few ascents and descents if I remember rightly so be advised that in places the walk can be strenuous. Not recommended for beginners or those with little or no hiking experience. Signposted and well way marked but it is always best to take a good map. Open 1st April to the 30th September. A fairly easy walk starting at Caldicot Castle. Adequate parking facilities. This walk takes about two and a half hours to complete. Getting out onto the coast path enables you to see the second Severn Crossing opened in 1996. A new walking and cycling path is being created in Caldicot, transforming a disused military railway line into a section of the National Cycle Network. The first phase has already been completed and the tunnel in the picture shows the route from Portskewett to the outer reaches of Caldicot Castle Country Park. A lot has changed in this area since the time of the first Covid 19 lockdown back in 2020: new build houses and the creation of a new multi user cycle path which will have a number of environmental benefits. You have two options: a longer walk 8 miles (13 km) over to St Pierre Pill and back or if pushed for time like I was today you can reduce the distance to 5 and a half miles (8.7 km). The shorter walk is, imo, the better of the two as it takes in the new Caldicot to Portskewett cycle route and furthermore it is well signposted. Also the return footpath from the coast path to the village of Portskewett was closed earlier this year so for now it makes sense to do the shorter route. A short note on Black Rock Black Rock has been an important crossing point of the River Severn for many centuries. Numerous coins found in the mud show that it was in constant use throughout the Roman period, on the route between Aquae Sulis (Bath) and Venta Silurum (Caerwent).

The Temple Year of construction AD 330 Location Caerwent The Roman Walls are some of the best preserved in Europe. Aka Venta Silurum the Romans arrived here in AD 75. They encountered the Silures a local tribe who became Romanised. Large sections of the town walls and remains of Roman shops can be seen. An archaeologist’s paradise with impressive Roman remains. An easy walk allows the visitor to explore the town in less than an hour. Start at the CADW car park. Gray Hill A longer walk can be done time and weather permitting. There is a group of standing stones well known in the area. To reach the top you can start the walk in the village of Llanvair Discoed. Take a good map as the footpaths cross private farm land and there aren't many finger posts or way markers.

Lots of paths to explore in and around the castle grounds. Monmouth Viaduct Completed in 1861. I completed a circular walk in this area with my walking group earlier this year. Penallt Church Grade 1 listed building. Dates from the late thirteenth/ early fourteenth century. A place of pilgrimage, walkers come from miles around to visit this place of worship. Extensive views across the valley 600 feet below. The church is also home to a 300+ population of Horseshoe bats and a site of special scientific interest. Chepstow castle Construction began in 1067. Owned and managed by Cadw. The river Wye meanders through the valley below. View from Wintours Leap. Take great care here if walking the path. 📅 Itinerary Local walks Caerwent Archaeology walk Just a short drive west of Chepstow and north of Newport Caerwent has a small and welcoming community. It was founded by the Romans circa AD 75 as the market town of Venta Silurum. The modern village is built around the Roman ruins, which are some of the best-preserved in Europe. Large sections of the town walls are still in place, rising up to five metres (16 ft) high in places. Undy Church Starting at Undy Church you can reach the coast path by following National cycle route 4 for a short distance and then turning right. It's signposted. Best to keep to the cycle path as there are cattle in the field. You might catch a glimpse of a heron or a bird of prey. A good area for bird watching ; you can also see Denny Island in the channel and the town of Portishead in the distance. Chepstow town circular walk A short walk, starting at the tourist information centre, allows the visitor to see the main sights in under an hour. The Wye Bridge in Chepstow is a historic cast iron arch bridge that carries the A466 road over the River Wye, separating England and Wales. The church in the pictures dates back to 1071 the time of the Norman Conquest and was built only four years after the construction of Chepstow Castle. They call it Chepstow's Historic Gem.

Chepstow Castle, a Grade I listed site, is located on the cliffs of the River Wye in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, and is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain.
