I prefer this summer resort on the outskirts of Beijing to Chongli!
In previous years, everyone flocked to Chongli to escape the summer heat during the hottest days of summer. This time, I avoided the crowds and drove to Haituo Valley, and I was completely captivated! While it also boasts a year-round temperature of 19-20℃ and is a similar high-altitude valley resort, compared to the various towns in Chongli, Haituo Valley is less crowded, offers more soothing scenery, is more affordable, and is incredibly age-friendly. No need to scramble for high-speed rail tickets or squeeze into popular mountain photo spots. It's suitable for families with children, seniors, and couples seeking relaxation. This is a genuine, unadvertised review; this year, I'm skipping Chongli for a summer getaway from Beijing and choosing Haituo Valley as my permanent destination!
I. Both are cool, high-altitude resorts with temperatures around 20°C, but Haituo Valley has 5 major advantages over Chongli:
1. Closer proximity and hassle-free travel: No need to rush for high-speed rail or endure highway congestion. Chongli is a 1-hour high-speed rail journey, but tickets are extremely difficult to obtain during the summer. Driving on the Jingli Expressway is congested on weekends, with a minimum one-way trip of 2.5 hours.
Haituo Valley is only a 1.5-hour drive from Beijing city center, with smooth highway traffic and minimal congestion. No need for shuttle buses; a direct ride to the park entrance. No high-speed rail restrictions allow for easy loading of luggage, strollers, and camping gear. Ample charging stations are available along the tram route, making short weekend trips effortless.
2. Less crowded, quieter, and more private: No long queues for popular photo spots. Chongli's Taiwu and Fulong water parks and mountain flower fields are packed with people on weekends, with queues for popular spots starting at half an hour.
Haituo Valley, on the other hand, has a more restrained overall capacity, focusing on a more relaxed and less crowded resort experience. At an altitude of 1445m, beside Swan Lake, with its Swiss-style pointed wooden cabins, the 1473 Cafe on the mountaintop, and the Black Forest trails, every spot is deserted. In the evening, the orange groves by the lake and the sea of clouds in the mountains offer easy photo opportunities without having to avoid crowds; the healing atmosphere far surpasses that of the bustling town of Chongli.
3. Affordable prices with no markups; your entire budget for food, accommodation, and activities will be half that of Chongli. Restaurants in Chongli's commercial streets are heavily overpriced, with a bowl of noodles costing 40-50 yuan, and mountain activities and family amusement park packages often costing hundreds. Haituo Valley, on the other hand, is affordable and down-to-earth. Simple meals in the park cost around 35 yuan per person, while farm-style stews and wild mountain vegetables cost around 60 yuan per person. Wooden cabins start at around 300 yuan on weekdays, RV camping is just over 400 yuan, and single-item expenses like the mountaintop cable car and pet feeding are all in the tens of yuan. A family of three for 2 days and 1 night can save over 800 yuan compared to a similar itinerary in Chongli, making it affordable for students and families with multiple children.
4. Gentle Lakeside Paths and Forest Flats: Easy for Strollers and Seniors with Limited Mobility
Chongli Town is built on a mountainside with many steep slopes, making it difficult to reach the amusement park and mountaintop, especially for wheelchairs and strollers.
Haituo Valley Park, centered around Swan Lake, features flat paths around the lake, a commercial street, and a petting zoo, with fully accessible access. The gentle wooden boardwalks allow for easy exploration of the entire valley without climbing, and a cable car provides direct access to the mountaintop viewing platform. Even seniors and young children can easily visit all the attractions.
5. Abundant Natural Wildness: Pristine Forest, Petting Zoo, and Stargazing Camping in One Place
Chongli is heavily commercialized with many artificial amusement facilities, leaving little pristine forest.
Haituo Valley boasts tens of thousands of acres of native black pine forest, a natural oxygen bar with exceptionally high levels of negative ions. Free-roaming deer and goats roam the lawn, allowing for close-up feeding; black swans swim freely on the lake; a low-light-pollution area where the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye at night; limited-time lakeside bonfires and small fireworks displays each week; camping, picnics, and forest hikes offer multiple natural experiences to soothe urban fatigue.
II. Haituo Valley 2-Day 1-Night Relaxing Vacation Itinerary (No rushing, suitable for all ages)
Day 1: Direct drive from Beijing → Lakeside stroll and swan feeding → Lawn animal interaction, bonfire and stargazing at night. Depart from the city center at 8:00 AM, 1.5-hour direct drive to the park, free parking.
Check into a Swiss-style wooden cabin guesthouse at noon, with Swan Lake right downstairs. Lunch includes a simple meal at the park and mountain dumplings.
Afternoon: Stroll along the gentle lakeside path, buy feed to feed the black swans; feed deer and lambs on the large lawn, children can run freely and fly kites.
Evening: Climb to the 1473 Mountain Top Coffee House for panoramic views of the valley's sunset and sea of clouds; bonfire party on the lawn at night, gaze at the Milky Way with the naked eye – a view completely unseen in the city.
Day 2: Forest Hiking + Mountain Top Afternoon Tea, Off-Peak Return Trip
No need to get up early, breakfast is served until 10 am, sleep in.
In the morning, enjoy a light hike through a vast black pine forest. The dense shade keeps you cool throughout, and you can enjoy the refreshing mountain streams. Afternoon tea at the mountain top via cable car offers 360° panoramic views. The dessert and coffee set is excellent value.
Afterwards, purchase local specialties such as sea buckthorn juice and dried wild mushrooms. Depart for the return trip at 2 pm, perfectly avoiding the evening rush hour traffic back to Beijing.
III. Three Types of High-Value Accommodation Tested, Easier to Book and More Private than Chongli
Swiss Lakeside Cabins (Priority for Families)
These are individual, colorful lakeside cabins with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Swan Lake and private terraces. Rooms are equipped with children's toiletries, cribs, and are pet-friendly. Around 300 RMB on weekdays, the same lake-view room type costs twice as much in Chongli. Open your window in the morning to a view of the misty lake.
RV Camping Site (For Couples & Friends): Independent RVs with courtyards, bathrooms, and air conditioning. Picnics with tarpaulins on the lawn in front, perfect for watching the sunset over the valley in the evening, and stargazing from the RV window at night. Weekend prices are around 400 RMB, half the price of Chongli Stargazing Campground.
Simple Villas in the Park (Perfect for Multi-Generation Travelers and Budget-Friendly Stays): Spacious two-bedroom units suitable for three generations. Bright and airy balconies with panoramic views. A 5-minute walk to the lake. Includes a communal children's playground and sandpit. Excellent value for money for long-term stays and relaxation.
IV. Haituo Mountain Valley vs. Chongli: A Guide for Targeted Travelers
Prioritize Haituo Mountain Valley if you: Are looking for a short 1-2 day weekend getaway and don't want the long journey or scrambling for high-speed rail tickets; Have elderly people with mobility issues or young children traveling with you, and dislike hiking; Prefer quiet, less-traveled scenery and dislike crowds and long queues at popular tourist spots; Have a limited budget and want to control overall food and accommodation costs, seeking high value for money; Enjoy pristine forests, camping, stargazing, and animal interactions, preferring a relaxed, natural vacation.
Chongli (Taiwu/Fulong) is a good option if you: Specifically want to experience large indoor water parks and thrilling mountain sports (UTV, downhill tobogganing); Travel with a group of young people who don't mind high prices and crowds; Plan a longer vacation of 3 days or more and require comprehensive large-scale commercial facilities.
V. Local Specialty Mountain Cuisine, Affordable and Authentic with No Price Gouging
Main Meals: Braised Chicken with Mountain Mushrooms, Chongli Oat Noodles, Copper Pot Lamb, Reservoir Fish Hot Pot
Snacks: Roasted Potatoes, Handmade Hawthorn Cake, Milk Skin
Drinks: Wild Sea Buckthorn Juice, High-Altitude Wild Chrysanthemum Tea
Restaurants in the park have clearly marked prices, with no hidden costs. A full table of mountain home-style dishes can be enjoyed for around 60 RMB per person.
VI. Tips for Avoiding Summer Heat
Temperature: Stable 19-20℃ in summer, with a 10℃ difference between day and night. Wear short sleeves during the day, but a light jacket is necessary as it's windy by the lake in the mornings and evenings. The mountaintop coffee shop is even cooler, so the elderly and children should dress warmly.
Pet Feeding: Deer and swan feed is 15 RMB per serving. Do not bring your own snacks to feed the animals.
Cable Car: The fewest people go up the mountain before 9 am, when the lighting is best for photographing the sea of clouds and sunset. Afternoon backlighting will affect the photos.
Stargazing: Bonfires are held on the lawn every Friday and Saturday, away from light pollution. The Milky Way is clearest after 9 PM; bring your own stool.
Transportation: Free parking is available throughout the park. Electric vehicles can be rented for lakeside travel within the park, and strollers are available for free rental.
Every summer, people flock to Chongli; this year, try Haituo Valley to escape the heat. No need to endure highway congestion, scramble for transportation tickets, or bear exorbitant prices. Enjoy gently sloping lakeside Swiss-style wooden cabins, thousands of acres of pristine forest, deer grazing on the lawn, and bonfires by the Milky Way at night—all in one place. The valley maintains a cool 20°C, offering a quieter and more relaxing vacation experience.
For families who dislike noisy, commercialized towns and seek a short, hassle-free summer getaway, we highly recommend skipping Chongli and heading straight to Haituo Valley!
